Hello! Your blog is incredible, thank you for sharing your experience and wisdom. I was wondering, do you have any tips for dealing with lint and pet hair to prolong the life of clothes? We have a few mechanical tools for lint removal, but it is not only fairly time consuming, but I also always fear I will tear the fabric (it happened a few times). It's all socks, some sweaters and tops and blankets. Thanks so much for your time! (even if you can't answer) I hope you have a great day!

Lint and pet hair

Lint:

First of all: what's lint?

When you wear your clothes, you stress the fabric, wearing it down over time. This will cause fibres on your clothes to tangle, break, and clump together into bits of lint, forming pilling. This is a normal part of how fabric ages, and will happen faster on clothes with a lot of short fibres, clothes that receive a lot of friction (for example the back of your coat if you wear a backpack every day), and clothes made out of different fibre blends. Fabrics like silk or linen are less likely to pill than cotton, wool, or polyester.

While it's hard to completely avoid pilling, you can minimise it by taking a few precautions like sorting your clothes and turning your clothes inside-out when washing them, air-drying your garments, or using the gentle cycle/washing them by hand to avoid friction.

There are a lot of different methods to remove pilling. Check out these WikiHow articles on how to remove pilling and how to remove lint from clothes to see how it's done.

None of these techniques are very fast, but the right tools can make the process easier. Be careful when removing pilling, and know that it could thin your fabric further.

Pet hair:

I have pet rabbits that shed a lot of hair, and I haven't found a miracle cure for not being covered in pet hair all the time yet. I use a lint roller if necessary, store my clean clothes in a room my buns aren't allowed to enter, and warn people up front about having rabbits at home in case they're allergic.
