You know, the Mojave Outpost is such a small place with only a handful of named characters and yet, it’s got so much going on.
In particular atm, the quest you get from Ranger Jackson. This is very likely the first NCR quest many players got in the game, since Primm is kind of it’s own deal (and you need to go to the Outpost for it anyways).
Jackson asks you to clear the road so the many, many caravans (narratively) clogging his Outpost can leave. The quest gives no details beyond “Go to location, kill things”.
And what is it?
As someone not good at FPSes, and at a low level, my first time playing this game.... this quest was still piss-easy. There’s a certain kind of anticlimax when you kill the last ant and the quest updates - this moment of uncertainty, like “that’s IT?”
And this is a perfect way to introduce the player to the problems the NCR has and will continue to have throughout the game. This quest sets the tone for the NCR (Ghost’s quest is more setting the tone for the Legion, and Cass’s is unrelated to either), and what a tone it is.
Where even a low-level, unexperienced FPS player is left scratching their head wondering where the actual problem is - the problem is behind the desks at every NCR outpost, at every politician’s podium.
This is the only quest you can do for Jackson, and he isn’t even authorized to pay you for literally getting the Outpost running again. Yes, the rewards are good, but they aren’t official. The NCR is constantly its own worst enemy and this is just the first taste.
