Arguably one of the most progressive mainstream designers in the past 50 years, Monsieur Jean Paul Gaultier never shied away from shocking the media and his fans. He often experimented with disruptive and unique concepts such as his use of the “Birth of Venus” painting on clothing and his incorporation of rare fabrics on his garments. Incongruous to other designers of his time, Gaultier was known to use plus-sized models and models of colour as far back as the 1980’s. He believes that beauty is subjective and that there is beauty in everyone, regardless of their shape, colour, or attitude.
One of Gaultier’s most venerated concepts is the cone bra. First seen in his FW84 collection “Barbés”, a collection inspired by North African, Caribbean, and Oriental cultures. The cone bra was shown in this collection on a vibrant orange corset dress. It took inspiration from the 1950’s bullet bra concept and was given the added Gaultier effect of seduction and voluminous material. While the collection did take influence from a myriad of different cultural elements, Gaultier was also paying an homage to his late grandmother who would often tell him stories about corsets when he was a child.
Although the cone bra was directly inspired by the bullet bra, both of them had different uses to fulfil. The bullet bra was typically worn under garments for added support, whereas the cone bra was intended to be seen and was merely mimicking the stitching of the bullet bra in an eccentric way. Gaultier has always been known to shock the elites of the fashion world with his new concepts or bold statements. The cone bra is iconically Gaultier, distinguishable yet unpredictability innovative.
