Everly Schmitt becomes attached to WWE superstar Cody Rhodes, but her ex-boyfriend becomes a problem when he becomes jealous

Everly groaned as the sunlight glared through the blinds of her hotel window. She grumbled as she rolled to face away from the offending light, she fully intended on going back to sleep and just as she was about to drift off, her alarm clock rang out.

"Of course." Everly mumbled and drug herself out of bed. As much as she loved her job, she hated the early mornings. She sleepily brushed her teeth and changed into some shorts and a tank top, she pulled her hair back into a sloppy bun before heading out the door. Everly jogged down the staircase as a crowd of drunken patrons crowded the elevators, she headed straight to the hotel's gym where she could see some of her co-workers had already gathered. Just as Everly had started running on the tread mill, her best friend Justin hopped on the one beside her and smiled brightly at her.

"Morning Evie," Justin greeted. "You look beautiful as always."

"Good morning Justin," Everly greeted back continuing her pace. "Have you been here long?"

Justin ran at slower pace than Everly, jogging beside her.

"Not really, I didn't want to start any intense work outs without you." Justin winked.

Everly rolled her eyes and glanced about the room. Heath, Drew, and Jinder were messing around in a corner, playing air guitar and doing hair flips beside an annoyed John Cena. In the middle of the gym was Cody and Dustin Rhodes both working up a sweat. Everly admired the way Cody's chest rose and fell heavily as he lifted.

"Everly." This voice did not belong to Justin and when Macy turned, she could see that Justin had stopped his machine in order to stare down the person behind them. Everly quickly slowed her treadmill to a stop and turned to face the mystery person.

"Randy." Everly gasped out. She knew she'd run into him again, he worked with her after all, yet she hadn't prepared herself. After they'd broken up, she'd taken a year long leave to focus on herself, and upon her return, she'd heard rumours that Randy hadn't quite gotten over her.

"You look amazing," Randy stated. "It's been a long time."

"Not long enough." Everly retorted, stepping off of the treadmill and making to leave. Randy grabbed her by her upper arm and turned her to face him. "I just want to talk-"

"Get off her Randy," Justin stepped up beside the two. "She obviously doesn't wanna talk."

Randy glanced from Justin to Everly seemingly amused by his attempt to protect her. He scoffed and turned to Everly once again. "You dating Justin now? Got him as a personal bodyguard?"

It was Everly's turn to scoff as she tried to shrug out of his hand. "That's none of your business Randy."

"Hey!" Another voice broke out and Everly snapped her head to see each Cody and Dustin standing before her and Randy.

"Stand down dogs." Randy snapped. Cody smirked and took a step forward.

"I bet Hunter wouldn't like to hear his favourite little soldier is misbehaving."

Dustin stepped forward as well. "Of course, if the young lady prefers, we can skip Hunter and set about punishing you ourselves."

Everly's eyes were large, round disks as she watched the three men. Dustin was a lot more intimidating outside of his makeup. Randy stood as still as a statue for many minutes, the corner of his lips twitching as he finally let Everly go.

"We'll talk later." Randy murmured and walked out of the room. Cody watched as Randy left the gym and kept his eyes on the door for a few seconds longer before he turned his attention back to Everly.

"Are you okay?" Everly nodded.

"Yeah, we just... Had a misunderstanding."

"Big one from what we saw." Dustin chimed in. He turned on his heels and strutted back to their spot in the middle of the gym and resumed his workout.

Cody awkwardly extended his hand to Everly. "I haven't gotten to formally meet you, I'm Cody. I'm sorry for Randy's behavior... He has always had an anger issue."

Everly shook Cody's hand, noting how soft yet strong it was. "Everly.... Everly Schmitt."

"I'm Justin," Justin intercepted. "Gabriel... Everly's friend."

Cody clicked his tongue and shook Justin's hand. "We've met." He once again turned back to Everly. "I hope to see you around more Everly, and if Randy gives you anymore trouble... You can call me."

Cody produced a small card from his shorts and pressed it into Everly's hand and walked back to his brother. Everly examined the wrinkled card that had his name and number scribbled on it. She wondered when he had written this and if she had even been it's intended target to begin with.

"Earth to Evie," Justin waved a hand in her face and sighed. "I don't know why you bother with people like him, he's basically a Walmart version of Randy."

Everly tilted her head and stared at Justin in confusion. "Why are you like this?"

skating, that's easy enough. pretty sure she's got better balance on skates, than in sneakers sometimes. been doing it for as long as she could remember. usually however, daniel would be on the ice with her & their coach would be yelling orders from the sideline. working on some program, working on new tricks or lifts. skating around with a stick in her hands however, that's a whole other ball game. definitely going to eat her words about how it can't be that hard. small grunt in frustration as the puck slide past her. skate after it before turning in his direction & glancing up at gabriel then back to the puck, eyes narrow slightly before before shooting it over at him.

Superlinguo 2023 in review

I spent 2023 on leave to hang out with a new tiny human. I still found time for some linguistics, including regular Lingthusiasm episodes and even some intermittent blogging. I also got to reuse all my linguist pregnancy announcement jokes.

Lingthusiasm

Lingthusiasm turned 7 this year! We celebrated with a dozen main episodes as well as our monthly bonus episodes for patrons. We had some help to get through the year while I was on leave with interviews with linguists from around the world, including Lingthusiasm team members Martha Tsutsi-Billins and Sara Dopierela.

I like that there was one paper on lingcomm, one on gesture (including emoji!) and one on the linguistics job interviews, it feels like a nice mix of some of my current interests. The year ahead

I'll be back to work full time. I've found the low-key level of blogging I managed this year to be sustainable, so expect it to be business-as-usual here. Lingthusiasm will also continue with monthly main and bonus episodes, thanks to the patrons who support the show and ensure we have a team that can keep everything rolling while begin to take on more administrative responsibilities in my job.

I'm looking forward to sharing some things that are in the final stages of peer-review and copy editing, and I'm excited to be spinning up some new projects.

A renowned beauty and friend of William Michael Rossetti, Ford Maddox Brown, George Frederick Watts and William and Jane Morris, Marie Spartali Stillman became a well-known face of the Pre-Raphaelite movement as the occasional model for Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones. Dante's vision of Leah and Rachel occurs as he prepares to leave the seventh terrace on the Mountain of Purgatory; Lust. Leah can be seen gathering flowers, while Rachel serenely watches her own reflection. gabe's had a damn good hockey season. he's been playing fantastic, he's top of his game . . . and personally? well, he's doing great there too. he's got his friends, he's got vesta . . . and vesta? well, she just gets him. everything he throws at her she throws right back. he's never had a relationship like that before. everyone else just kind of idolized him because he was this hot shot athlete. he didn't want that. he wanted vesta. and then there's moments like now . . . he's laying in her bed with her right next to him, and she's resting her head on his chest, her hand slowly moving up and down his leg. he sighs contently, arching up into her touch as he groans softly, ❝ i'm close, babe . . . ❞ he mutters, eyes slipping shut as he gets closer to that edge, and then all of a sudden all contact is gone and he's not on the edge anymore, and he lets out a frustrated groan instead, ❝ oh, that's fucking mean . . . ❞
