Gideon Lightwood was typically a calculated man.

Raised by one, such as Benedict Lightwood, it was only natural he would learn from his cunning ways as a politician. His ability to persuade a crowd into chanting for any tale he chose to weave into a noble cause, or his ability to conjure payments as a donation to said cause. It was only human nature, after all, that Gideon takes note of his ways, the sweet nothings are promised, camouflaged with a charismatic smile and disguised as altruism. Gideon had liked to think he was unlike the man in most matters, however, he could not argue that his strategic ways were rooted in any man’s success, it set the scene for the tale. And so, he stood in line at the Infernal Cafe on Wednesday morning, awaiting his order of scones, a food he was not particularly fond of. As he had been for the past week now.

She has not come out to the front yet, and if he had a repeat of the previous day's failings, the stale scone in his messenger bag would find itself a partner. Sophie Collins, an English major at his university (he’d learnt on day two), worked at the Independence Cafe. Gideon, at the very least, had been aware of the insanity to his undertaking, but when he’d set his eyes on the hazel-eyed woman, her dark locks escaping every pin she’d had in an attempt to look presentable, he believed himself completely enamoured. She’d given him a smile on the first day, and he was ashamed to find himself momentarily focused on the scar, a slash that crossed the left side of her face, spanning from her temple to her mouth. She offered him a scone at his silence, telling him she’d just baked them that morning, and he could not say no.

He was standing on the side, a small, wooden ‘Pick Up’ sign hanging above his head. The cafe had been a mess of students, with it being the week leading up to the term's commencement. Two other baristas worked tirelessly to manage the never-ending line that had only continued forming, leading towards the entrance, the bell above the door constantly ringing, a reminder of their assiduity. Leaning back and forth on the heels of the loafers he donned, Gideon forced his eyes away from the kitchen's backdoor, unsure if staring at Sophie immediately would conjure a sound impression. Tables had been filled with students, laptops open in front of them as they aggressively hit at the keys, some with textbooks open before them, presumably preparing for the readings for the week ahead.

“Gideon!”

She’d come out during his perusal of the cafe, and her kind smile as she looked in his direction might’ve been powerful enough to take him down instantly.

“Hey, you again. Did you like yesterday’s scone? I changed up the recipe a little,” she said, leaning over the counter as she did, trying to grasp his honest opinion.

“Hey, Sophie. It was good, like always. You’ve outdone yourself.” God. Why did he lie? He really could’ve chosen anything else on the menu, but when she’d recommended it he couldn’t help himself.

“You’re sweet,” she smiled. “Hey I’ve gotta get back to the rush, but I’ll see you around?”

“Yeah, I’ll be around,” he nodded.

Another failed attempt at asking her out.

Gideon hadn’t visited the cafe again after Wednesday.

He had come to a very valid conclusion that he was acting in a somewhat preposterous manner. He also could not explain to Gabriel, his brother why he had been leaving bags of scones on the dining table. And he was not going to give his brother a reason to slip the news of his childish crush to their father.

So when Gideon walked into his History lecture, an elective he’d chosen as a Finance major, his steps faltered at the sight of Sophie Collins, sitting in the second row. She was wearing the same ponytail, pins stuck in various directions, holding her hair out of her face. He willed his legs to move, taking the empty seat beside her without a word, and unnoticed as she continued to dig through a canvas bag in her lap, arranging her notebook and a small case of notebooks onto her desk. Gideon, quietly matching her actions undid his messenger bag, unpacking his laptop onto the small lecture desk before him, his knees incapable of remaining still in the limited space he had.

“Hey, you again. Sorry, I didn’t see you,” she brightens, offering the same, kind smile she usually wore. “I thought you were a Finance major, what are you doing in a History class?”

“Elective,” he nods, turning his body slightly towards her, hoping she’d take it as a sign to continue conversing with him. “Need to make sure I’m worldly.”

She let out a giggle beside him, and he gave her an appreciative look. His brother did not find him amusing. Nor did his father. Or his mother. As a matter of fact, Gideon wasn’t sure there was a member of his family that found him a joy to be around.

“Well, Gideon, how was your break?”

“It was quite nice. I travelled to Spain for a few months,” he smiles, thinking back to his time abroad, its rich history, the culture, and the escape it gave him.

“That's very worldly Mr Lightwood,” she smiles, a different look in her eyes he does not recognise.

“And how was your holiday Ms Collins?”

“It was fine,” she turns to the front, the professor entering with her assistant, “I just worked at the cafe,” she adds.

Ah. Gideon often neglected to consider all he was able to do. Part of him, as selfish as it may be, felt he had deserved this somehow. A trade-in perhaps, an emotionally negligent father for the ability to drown his sorrows in a monetary barter for a shoulder to lean on. They both remained silent for the remainder of the two hours, the lecturer had (thankfully) opted to not look in his direction for the majority of the lesson, saving him from the mild humiliation of not completing the first reading of the course. The class had been stale, for the most part, until the professor's final words.

“This class does have the assignment to be completed in pairs, so please get to know those around you,” she explained, slow paces at the front of the lecture hall as she did, “it only takes a few moments to speak to the person next to you. Get it done sooner than later, you’ll be glad you did.”

Sophie turned to face him again, “Partner?” she asked hopefully.

“Of course, Miss Collins,” he answered, a smile on his face thanks to her proposition.

“Hey, I’m going to make blueberry scones at the cafe tomorrow,” she says, beginning to pack the notebook she’d scrawled into continuously throughout the lesson as he’d typed.

He should have told her at that moment. It might’ve been the perfect chance, actually.

“I’ll be there.”

On Tuesday morning, Gideon was in line, once again, waiting for his blueberry scone order to be called.

“Gideon,” Sophie smiles, sliding over the scone wrapped in a brown paper bag, “Made especially for your scone obsession.”

“Thanks, Sophie,” said Gideon, his smile mirroring the one that covered her face, “If you get a chance later today, maybe we can get a start on that project?”

“Yeah that sounds perfect,” she agrees, “I’m off at 2 o’clock. We can meet in the library at 3?”

“Library at 3,” he echoes, “It’s a date.”

With that, Gideon grabbed the scone, internally kicking himself. God. Did he have to add that? He concluded that he could not think straight in her presence. Would he have to remedy the words that slipped that afternoon?

“Gideon!” called a voice, as he turned, welcoming the distraction. Behind him, his younger brother, Gabriel was jogging in his direction. It was unlike him to be up so early, opting to take later classes to avoid the morning rush on campus. “Why aren’t you answering Dad’s calls he— is that another scone?” his voice interrogating, “Why do you keep buying them?”

“Just in case I’m hungry later,” he rushed, hoping to cover his tracks. “What did you need?”

“Why aren’t you answering Dad’s calls? He’s called me three times this morning asking for you. And it’s barely 10.”

“I just haven’t had time,” the lie, a rehearsed excuse, left his mouth without a second thought.

Gideon had plenty of time between his classes, given that he held a paper bag from the Infernal Cafe in his left hand. But he also desperately needed to avoid his father's calls, which ended with him agreeing to spend his time working on his father's campaign.

“Well, could you call him? I’m not sure I can survive another call.”

“Yeah of course, sorry Gabriel,” apologised Gideon, running a hand through his hair.

“I’ve gotta get to my class. I’ll see you at the apartment?” he asked, not waiting for his response as he made his escape.

Gideon was sitting in the room he’d reserved for their assignment. And he was nervous, legging-tapping insistingly kind of nervous. The study room somehow made it worse, with the all-white walls, all-white table and dreadful grey carpet. The uneasiness that’d taken over him was also blamed partially on the two choices he’d made today. On his over to the library, he’d made the executive decision that he would ask Sophie out. And admit the truth regarding the scone issue. It only seemed smart to do so.

Sophie: Hey! I’m here. Where are you?

Gideon: I’ve reserved room 4 for a bit. In here now.

Sophie: Okay!! Coming up now :)

A small knock on the room’s door signalled Sophie’s arrival, her hair left down today, and wearing a white sundress.

“Hey,” she whispered, the smile on her face radiant, and the Infernal Cafe’s signature paper bag in her hand. “I grabbed you a few scones before I left.”

God. He couldn’t tell her now.

“Thanks, Soph,” he stood, moving around the table to pull the chair out directly across from this.

Offering him thanks, she sat down, unpacking the same notebook she’d had in class, and a printed syllabus beside it.

“Sorry, I haven’t got a laptop right now. Mine broke,” she says, her tone apologetic, “I’ll try to get one soon though.”

“Don’t apologise, we can work on mine. It’ll be fine we’ve got weeks to go to do this,” he offered, pushing his chair back as he moved to sit beside her.

“How long have you been working at the cafe?” he asked, “I’d never seen you before last week.”

“I first year,” she explained, “But it wasn’t many hours. They were strict about that then.”

“So the scones have been perfected over some time,” he joked.

“Well yes, they are perfect, aren’t they?” she retorted.

“It’s part of the reason I’m at the cafe every morning,” he started, “The other reason has to do with the lovely barista baking them.”

“Lovely,” she snorted, before quickly composing herself.

“Yes, I did use the word lovely,” he remarked, pushing his shoulder against hers gently. “I might even have to ask her out to dinner tonight.”

He had tried to keep his voice calm. Cool, even. But he could feel the sweat pool in the palm of his hands as he tried desperately to dry them off on his jeans. Gideon wasn’t entirely sure how he’d come back from the situation if she’d rejected him in the room. Perhaps he hadn’t chosen the best place to do this, he realised. There was no room to attempt a dignified escape for both of them. He also hadn’t known Sophie well enough so that their friendship could return from such an awkward encounter.

“She might be free tonight,” she finally replied, smiling down as she did.

Gideon felt like he’d won the lottery then. He wasn’t entirely sure what happened at that moment, but he might have remained frozen momentarily. Eventually, he did pull himself out of it, the pair continued to work on planning their assignment, occasionally, slipping into unrelated conversations about one another’s lives in between.

Sophie was sitting across from Gideon, and he thought it was the most beautiful sight. She’d worn her hair in a braid, a black sundress similar to the one she’d worn that morning, and a smile she hadn’t been able to wipe away for a single moment. Gideon had chosen a small bistro near campus, making a very careful decision to avoid the spots he was sure his brother, or worse, his father frequent. The restaurant's lights were dimmed, candles and soft lighting illuminating the room, the atmosphere making him somehow more anxious.

“If you’re not completely full, there’s a place nearby that serves frozen yoghurt,” he looked to her hopefully, “They should be open for a little longer.”

“Yeah that sounds perfect,” she smiled. “I have to Mr Lightwood, you have planned the perfect date.”

“Yeah?”

She nods at him, and he felt the entire room fade into nothing, only Sophie before him. He signalled for a waiter passing by, asking for the bill, to which he signed and scribbled a generous tip, hoping the staff were able to read the chicken scratch on the paper caused by the shaking of his hands Gideon then stood, walking to move Sophie’s chair, holding her brown coat over her shoulders as they prepared to leave.

Offering her his arm, which she grabbed close, the pair began making their way to the frozen yoghurt cart Gideon had mentioned.

“Okay Sophie, the moment of truth,” he began, turning to face her.

“What is it?” a small, nervous smile playing on her face.

“Will it be a fruit flavour or dessert?”

“Move,” she laughed, jokingly shoving him to get a look at the menu, “I thought you were being serious. And fruit obviously. Mango.”

“A woman after my own heart,” he smiled, as she nestled herself against his arm again.

Ordering himself and Sophie a cup each, they moved to a bench across the cart. The October night hadn’t been terribly cold, making the night seem much more perfect. But he did promise himself, earlier that afternoon in the bathroom mirror, that he’d confess tonight.

“Sophie,” he looked at her, “There is something I would like to mention.”

“Another truth?” she asked, her tone light.

“Of sorts,” he began, “I should just confess, I am not too fond of scones. Actually, that’s not true either, I really dislike scones. All scones,” he rushed.

“What?”

“It isn’t your scones, per se, I’ve just never been a big fan of scones,” he continued to explain, unsure why he kept mentioning the word ‘scones’.

“What are you talking about? You ordered so many, on some days multiple even,” she was looking at him with disbelief and he felt like the strangest man in London that night.

“It’s just that you recommended them on the first day, and I thought that you were, you know—“

“I was what?”

“Beautiful.”

“So you kept ordering scones? Gideon, why?” she pressed, her face overtaken by her blush as she did.

“I’m not sure. You’d said you baked them yourself and you were proud so I couldn’t say no,” he continued, hearing how insane he sounded.

“I had to bake so many scones,” she said, shoving against his shoulder.

“What do you mean? They were already there when I’d come in,” he swallowed.

“No, there were three like we always make. But since someone kept ordering, I had to keep baking.”

“Ah.”

God. He wasn’t just the strangest man in London that night. He was also the densest. Gideon had assumed the scones would just be there regardless. Perhaps he was more like his father than he thought.

“Sophie,” he began, his tone apologetic, “I’m sorry, I didn’t know. Truly,” his body turned completely to face her as he did.

“You’ll have to make it up to me,” she said smugly, “On our second date, I mean.”

“Of course. Anything,” his tone was so hopeful he couldn’t imagine how desperate he’d sounded.

“You have to cook next time.”

“It’s a date.”

They stood, discarding their empty cups in the can near the cart, before making their way back to the bistro, where Gideon had parked.

Sophie’s steps faltered slightly, turning her head to Gideon, “If you did eat them, what did you do with so many scones?”

“I’d rather not say,” he answered, dramatically looking away.

“You’re terrible, Gideon Lightwood,” she giggled, “You’re very lucky I’m so generous.”

Yes, Gideon was indeed lucky. He might’ve been the luckiest man in London that night.

guess who finally finished chain of thorns over a week later 🤩 my completely unorganized thoughts for the general public anyways chain of thorns spoilers ahead bros

- ghostwriter is the relationship i love them more than i love my life it's just like the cute little moments between them like when lucie was nervous before her parabatai ceremony with cordelia and he was holding her and comforting her i melted

- i honestly think james and matthews relationship was dealt with really well we know nobody is ever gonna top jem and will but i think they were written really well and them in edom together was so emotional to me

- tell me why i was so heartbroken when christopher died but i only cried when grace sent that fire message and wrote that it was created by kit 🥺lol i'll tell you why it's because we got zero real reaction about it

i wanted anna's pov as her baby brother died in her arms

i wanted cecily and gabriel seeing their sons body taken into idris and realizing what happened

where was sophie and gideon who also lost a child comforting them?!?!?

honestly i think that since christopher did die there was a lot of potential there

-i hated the love triangle and felt awful for matthew the entire time cause like didn't we all know jordelia was endgame i meannnn

literally love jordelia tho and i we'll never not think of james saying "sod that" and shooting the door open like sir 🫣also them traveling is something that is so personal to me i am in love with the idea of james and cordelia going all around the world and then taking their kids with them 😍

-after this book i feel like grace is a lost kitten and i want literally nothing more than to adopt her also did anyone else catch at the end when they said that grace doesn't talk much idk but i would like to give her a home

-the thomastair content 🤩🤩🤩 i love them so much i love that they're moving in together i love alastair with his baby brother i love eugenia saying she's gonna renounce her family if they don't accept thomas when he came out. every scene with them was a masterpiece

also alastair's personality like my boy is sassy and sarcastic and i would die for him

-i think the anna and ari's storylines progressed really well and they've come so far since we've first met them 🥺

-anyways my #1 ship matthew x sobriety came true and i could not be more thrilled

the moral of my rant here was that i really loved it and i think it's just cause im so in love with each of the characters but i loved almost every second of this book and didn't want it to end my only complaint would be how christopher's death and other potentially emotional topics (will and tessa crying when they found out the kids were stuck in london) were kind of just glossed over but overall i was in love with them all and i don't think i can accurately describe my feelings so that was my jumbled mess of thoughts

After letting this book stew in the back of my mind a couple days, I've come to add some more points that I was thinking about after I first managed to unload most of my thoughts.

i. In one of the many examples of characters telling each other how much they've changed, Thomas tells Alastair that Alastair is not the same he was before. That Alastair wouldn't have rushed to help Thomas when he was arrested. Wouldn’t have followed Thomas the first place and to make sure he was safe. The person Alastair used to be wouldn’t have looked after Matthew and wouldn’t be reading book after book about paladins to try to help his sister. The first two, three points I can agree on, but that last part. Either Thomas knows nothing about Alastair and Cordelia's relationship, or the writing knows nothing about Alastair who did his everything so Cordelia had happy childhood with a loving father without the darkness behind it all. Seriously.

ii. In the end, it is told that Anna and Ari are looking to adopt kid(s) because there are many Nephilim orphans. Thomas and Alastair talk how they will never get to have kids, but it is never addressed why they couldn't adopt also.

iii. Jesse trains vigorously in order to build up strength, James is looking to train with someone else than Matthew. Why do we never see any adult Shadowhunters train in the series? As if they do not need to maintain and preserve their skills and strength.

iv. James and Alastair never conclude their feud or arrive to a truce.

v. James and Grace never arrive to any conclusion either with each other.

vi. James' story was so tied to Cordelia, Matthew, and Belial that all the other conflicts that were previously introduced weren't properly concluded. Just because James tells Cordelia he isn't angry and no longer cares or thinks about that stuff, in the narrative sense they still remain open with the characters he does not even interact with.

vii. Additionally to the Lightwoods not getting to grieve their children: When Gideon and Sophie appeared at the Iron Tombs, the writing didn't acknowledge them any more than making them present. No reaction, no emotion, nothing that even remotely touched the fact that their nephew had just died by Tatiana, that Gabriel and Cecily have now gone through the same incredibly awful loss as they had right before.

viii. There is similar passiveness in the narrative seen in Queen of Air and Darkness: When Robert has died, Alec rises from beside Robert's body and basically throws himself at Magnus, but Magnus isn't a participant in the action/has no reaction (for instance, doesn't hold Alec or embrace him back). When Isabelle cries because of Robert's death, she is sitting on a couch with Alec and is clinging to him and sobbing against his shoulder, but Alec, like Magnus in that scene mentioned above, isn't written doing anything. His lack of action (for instance, holding his arms around Isabelle or consoling her) just gives the image of him passively sitting there while Isabelle cries her heart out. Similarly Gabriel does have no reaction to Alex's kidnapping, he just holds Cecily who does. But then Cecily or Gabriel aren't allowed to have reaction to Kit actually dying.

ix. Cecily's absence in the final battle could be read as that she remained in Idris because of Alexander (and Kit's death), but having no mention of her or how she is fairing in the rest of the book is just insanely callous.

x. Lucie's secret about the ghosts in their parabatai ceremony rehearsal came out of nowhere since Lucie never really did show any apprehension for any reason becoming parabatai with Cordelia?

xi. The characters are once again attracted to each other's appearance.

xii. Anna's "slim curves" being a constant aspect told about her looks.

xiii. Why is that the Herondale kids (excluding the other part of the pair) are the only ones to have parabatai? It's so strange that such concept as parabatai is "rare" among the Nephilim when they could just benefit greatly from warrior partners who can draw strength from one another, draw stronger runes on one another, and just in general be stronger in battles.

xiv. Thomas is constantly comparing himself to James and Matthew (and no one else) :/ Wonder why...

xv. What meaningful thing did Matthew's character actually do as to the plot in this book? He had no integral part other than being James' voice after James is being possessed by Belial.

xvi. Why was the Blackthorn sword such a huge deal anyway? Wasn't there suppose to be a name for it?

xvii. Jesse's "stolen" runes are never addressed again, neither whether he got them stripped. Which either way raises the question of whether Shadowhunters stripped from their runes (which is told to be a painful procedure) and send into exile could have then reapplied just as well? Could someone like Edmund Herondale who was stripped of his Marks technically become a Shadowhunter once more?

xviii. Why were Lucie's and James' respective powers tied to Belial himself? Belial had no use for Lucie and says as such that he holds no interest over her. Why there is no actual consequence of having 1/4 of Greater Demon blood since their powers disappeared with Belial?

xix. Similarly to Gabriel and Cecily, Kit and Grace had more authentic build-up to a possible relationship whereas all the others were incredibly fabricated and contrived.

xx. There was an illustration (collector's first edition) of Cordelia holding the ice sword. It was supposed to be a tease for the readers waiting for the publication of the book, but then it was just one scene and didn't even really matter even though Cordelia slew Tatiana in Lilith's name.

xxi. Jesse berates and blames Grace for having a choice and making the wrong one as to the whole bracelet mess, but what would've become of Grace had she refused? This is never thought of or addressed by anyone, the least by Jesse. No one but Kit was interested in Grace's victimhood and healing.

xxii. Jesse and Grace's relationship is just left unaddressed the rest of the book (Aside that everyone is looking for James to know how to feel their independent feelings and ganging up on her) after Jesse gets mad at her. They become closer once more towards the end but the writing still rather leaves all things unsaid, so unconcluded.

xxiii. Alastair doesn't bond with anyone else than Thomas. Everyone is doing their missions with their romantic partners because that's how things always go in this series. Why care about mixing things up a bit and have different character interactions?

xxiv. Things that disappeared from previous installment: Ari's wish to befriend Grace, Grace's secret about Tatiana wanting her to seduce Jesse, the rumor/supposition/fact that Grace was bought by Tatiana.

xxv. James barely, if at all, grieves Kit or acknowledges his passing. Cordelia is the same. Matthew does a few times. Thomas was the only one to carry Kit's death with him to the end. It was absurd how quickly Kit's death was brushed aside. He didn't even get a funeral nor even as little as a mention of such.

xxvi. Kit and Grace would've become revolutionary inventors in the Shadowhunter spheres but that would've been too powerful, I guess. (Also great how the only big character described as not conventionally attractive dies??)

xxvii. James and Cordelia's relationship leans heavily on previously established feelings and lacks substance and chemistry, just words and physical desire.

xxviii. If Cordelia's bond with Lilith is ended the moment Belial dies by her blade, then how was she able to heal James with paladin sword?

xxix. Do all the protagonist need to go dimension-hopping as if not to be lesser than the previous ones? No matter, the TMI gang still holds the crown since they've been to Edom and Diyu. TID zero.

xxx. I'm assuming Clare thought it was better that Alec descended from Alex (just assuming since I don't yet know what the "real" family tree looks like), probably also because Kit and Grace don't have the HERONDALE HAIR and obviously their children possibly couldn't.

xxxi. All the unnecessary things in this book greatly outweigh the necessary ones. I don't see any re-read value in any of this. And I still don't know what the series name refers to.
