Hold on. Hold on. Noticing a pattern.
Jod said when they were shutting down the cryo project, the bodies that didn't rot were the ones that he personally said goodbye to, the ones he loved.
Jod cannot die, has not been able to die in ten thousand years. Alecto assures him, "I still love y—" .
The cavaliers of Lyctors, as evidenced by Naberius and Gideon, their bodies don't rot.
Tamsyn Muir assured us, regarding Alecto, we have not begun to see the horrors of love.

i’m not going to pretend to be certain one way or another about what level of agency muir intends to give gideon in becoming kiriona/in aligning with john, because i think the level of uncertainty we’ve been given is both important and intentional, but i do think it’s specifically interesting how every other character we see be resurrected in some way and renamed by john it’s heavily implied that he also altered their memories and/or personalities; we see the renaming of titania and ulysses when he turns them into literal zombies entirely under his control and we see that the other lyctors, at some point, had different names and that their resurrection involves john altering them, and we see in some ways that kiriona falls right in the middle of those two - renamed like both of them, and still dead like titania and ulysses were and with her body having been altered by john and able to be “turned off” by ianthe at will, but also moving to some extent under her own power and retaining aspects of her personality (or her entire personality, depending on the reading - and i do think there are multiple legitimate, supported readings here)
and i think what’s specifically interesting here is that the set up of the original lyctors forces us to see them as complicit with john even though he does change and alter them - it is impossible to ignore the fact that m—- and a—- and g—- and c—- (and p—- and n—- and the nun and a—-‘s little brother!) stood with john through acquiring the first nuke, through killing hundreds of people, through necromantically piloting a world leader, etc. they’re fully complicit in the nuclear death of earth’s population even though most of them turned on him last minute, which translates over to being complicit in his empire, where we see the exact same pattern of them standing with him until eventually, later, individually deciding to betray him for whatever personal reasons they individually have. they are inarguably complicit, regardless of what alterations john made to them!
in contrast, titania and ulysses, at least prior to the resurrection, had no control, no ability to go against john at all, and so without knowing more about their resurrection and function as lyctors, it becomes almost impossible to say whether or not they had agency, ability to go against him, etc, and so all we know is that john used their bodies after their deaths in a way in which they could not resist against or do anything about
so by placing kiriona in this middle ground between the two, where we don’t know if she’s working with him entirely by gideon’s choice or if john altered her mind in some way, she’s in between total death and true resurrection, her wounds are still there but she isn’t rotting, the question becomes a question not of “is this her choice” but a question of “regardless of if this is her choice, how complicit is she?”
even if kiriona is mentally altered in some way, she’s only in this situation because she learned and embraced the cavalier role to such an extent that she died so that harrow could go lyctor. even if kiriona is mentally altered in some way, gideon was only in canaan house in the first place in order to earn the ability to “go free” and join the cohort. and, in contrast, even if she hasn’t been altered in some way mentally, she literally does not have physical control of her own body. kiriona isn’t a portrait of how people choose to align themselves with empire, but rather she’s the centerpoint of three books’ worth of themes about complicity, imperial corruption, death as something which the empire owns and corrupts, family, and memory. to say definitively that kiriona is only aligned with john because of trauma and her behavior is exactly how gideon always behaves in this situation or to say definitively that gideon would never act like this and so kiriona must have had her memory fucked with or her soul altered in some way i genuinely think is to miss the point - regardless of how much quote unquote agency gideon has in the way kiriona’s behaving and who she’s expressing loyalty to, she both has no power over herself (ianthe can and does shut her off!!! she spent her entire life obsessing over her body as a method of escape and now her body has been physically altered by john!!!) and is complicit, has been absorbed into the imperial seat of power and is being used as a weapon by that seat of power, etc.
additionally, this is a series heavily interested in themes of agency around death and how death is constantly being exploited by john and necromancers. it is important that gideon died on purpose (although obviously under. external pressures lol) and has been brought back in a manner which robs her of control over her own body, and i think being willing to engage with that and with what we’re told about the original lyctors and how john used them is important to a reading of kiriona

cannot stop thinking about Gideon. or Kiriona. the Corpse Prince, Heir to the Nine Houses, first of the Tower Princes. because who is she? what is she?
her entire (re)introduction seems engineered to make you think someone has deepfaked Gideon. it gives wrongfeelings all the way down. Uncanny valley supreme. not only the name change but... we have never seen a Gideon this cold or uncaring, or just.... brutal. and some of the things Kiriona wants are just so alien. like she wants to become John's cavalier? what the hell, she never gave a shit about the empire or God or John. she seems generally apathetic twoards Harrow which is just so NOT Gideon I don't know what to say. Gideon's two settings re: Harrow are hatred and devotion. PLUS in our first (re)introduction, it is clear that the House appears to be trying to pass off an obvious corpse as their alive heir, which is like, so many levels of red flag warning. and then she comes back so... easy. she was just playing possum? Kiriona does not feel.... i dont know exactly. She doesn't feel real. She's like if someone read a manual on who Gideon was but only head the headings, and very quickly.
so like, i would be convinced she was Wrong or Someone Else/Someone New BUT!!!! then there are just enough moments of pure, genuine Gideon to make me feel confused. the way she bickers with Ianthe is definitely in character. and then there's her anger at how she was treated as a child and her heartbreak&hysterics -- so palpable even when seen through Nona's semi concious state -- when she finally fulfils her childhood fantasy of killing Crux, on p.473, the source of so much abuse, and it just doesn't feel good. like. her breaking down because it didn't feel good was so genuinely Gideon and so painful.
and then on p. 374, Nona realizes that Kiriona is the saddest person she has ever seen, and that's just-- idk how to explain it. my breath caught. Gideon IS there.
and then again on p. 411, Kiriona -- Gideon -- asks Nona if Nona loves Harrow. she asks if Nona knows where Harrow is. and there's just.... idk. that's Gideon!!!! through so many layers of trauma or detachment but it IS Gideon, asking, because she loves Harrow to death and beyond it, and Nona just doesn't care so that's all we get. but that is fucking Gideon. that tiny moment. and she just seemed so fucked up and sad and resigned.
maybe this is Gideon, but put through the sieve of so much trauma that she has become unrecodnizable. maybe this is only Gideon sometimes, and someone else other times. but what the fuck happened to her. how did she get there, what happened to her, what is going on during the moments when she is unrecognizable. what did they do to her over the six month time gap. who did this to her, how did they do it, and most importantly will we get to see Harrow tear out their intestines slowly.

" i've always wanted to apologize for... that time. and thank you. " her fingers fidget as she keeps her gaze steady on her lap. " i hate that you found me in such a state, but i'm-- i'm happy, too. because of you, i'm myself again. "

Gaia doesn't even know Ryne's past. Even in the first two sections of Eden (before she loses all her remaining memories) she only really vaugely knows about the whole Oracle situation (That Ryne is the Oracle of Light, used to be called Minfilia, and was isolated somewhere in Eulmore). But like, she didn't know about the situation with Ran'jit, nor the way her relationship was with Thancred at first, having only seen them interact after they've already gotten into a healthier dynamic.
And after Mitron takes her memories she doesn't even remember that! iirc she never got those memories back either, so she kinda knows basically nothing about Ryne outside of the direct stuff she experienced in the Eden story.
I imagine Ryne would tell her at least the basic stuff(like her imprisonment in Eulmore & the Oracle stuff), especially since it would probably be a bit disconcerting for Gaia to have Ryne know so much about her yet know basically nothing about Ryne in turn. We already see Ryne telling Gaia about Thancred & Urianger when her memories first start disappearing, so I imagine she'd continue with that once the situation with Mitron is resolved. She has a good bit to explain, but explain it she will.

So long as interdimensional travel was out of their reach, Meiko aspired to visit the First as regularly as she could, so long as time allowed. The nonsense with the Final Days had understandably taken up a lot of her time, but now that things were relatively calmer, she tried to drop by every couple of weeks. With it, she gladly brought communication between the Scions and their loved ones, whether it be through letter or word of mouth.
The Crystarium was always her first stop. Sometimes it was her only stop depending on how much time she had, which worked well enough as it was the central hub of Norvrandt, and messages could be carried off in haste with Feo-Ul's assistance (after much praise and apology). Her best trips were the long ones, though.
Today would be the start of a long one, as she was also on an errand for Y'shtola that would likely require some thought from Beq Lugg, as well as Cylva and Unukalhai. She always sought out Ryne and Gaia first, though, and it didn't take her long to learn they were likely in Ryne's apartment at the Pendants. She waved to the Manager of the Suites and headed up the stairs to the familiar room.
As she neared the door, Meiko paused to knock, only to hear familiar giggling coming from inside. How cute. Feeling a bit cheeky, she decided to let herself in and surprise them.
Tumblr media
"Guess who's back from 'cross th'Rift?" she greeted in a singsong tone, swinging the door wide open -- and watching the black blur that was Gaia fling herself across the room with enough speed to nearly knock over one of the chairs.
Puzzled, Meiko was about to apologize for giving the other teen a fright, up until she looked over at Ryne and saw the lass was practically radiating crimson. And adjusting her clothes.
Ah, fuck.
Fuck.
The Viera abruptly turned away, one hand coming up to shade over her eyes despite there being nothing scandalous to see. Or unsee.
"Uh! Sorry -- um," Shite. Fuck. Oh, she felt terrible now! And also couldn't help but think about Thancred's reaction. Not that anyone would be particularly surprised, but -- "Uh, I didn't --"
"Gaia, no!"
Meiko looked back to see Ryne restraining Gaia, who had picked up her mallet in furious response.
"You're supposed to knock! Were you born outside?" she demanded angrily, somehow redder than Ryne.
"I--I actually don't know that answer, but no! M'sorry! I was just tryin' to surprise you!" Meiko held up her hands in defense, then slowly let them fall to her sides and hung her head. "Okay, okay, you can hit me." It probably wouldn't kill her.
"We're not hitting anyone! It was a mistake, Gaia!" Ryne managed to pry the weapon from her hands. The other girl huffed and folded her arms, fuming as she looked away. Shaking her head, she turned back to Meiko. "It really is okay! We're always happy to see you, Meiko. Just--please knock next time."
"Promise on my life," Meiko agreed, sheepish. Literally, I think.

good morning everyone ❤️ today’s thoughts are how gaia has the energy/vibe of being a very physically affectionate person but she rarely iniates it due to the fear that was instilled of her from her peers in the past.
