Namaste hello inspired from @navaratna gothic romance mood board I got an idea to form a story. *fingers crossed that this turns out to be good one*
A/N: This story contains pieces of odia royal history too. Gajapatis, Routray, Kataka and Udaygiri are all taken from Odia history. And yeah this might turn super cliche too so be prepared. Also this is dialouge heavy but it will get better with time.
Ahem ahem presenting
Ch-1: History project, Old mansion and Horror stories
"And then Nandini transforms into her real form as the witch of Kedargaon. She bares her teeth and with her long nails tears open the chests of her victims who in this case were her friends," said Sonalika, her voice low and raspy to create an eerie ambience in her bedroom.
"Bas ho gaya. If you narrate another horror story, I will take the next train home. Yaar aaj mereko hanuman chalisa lagake sona padega," said a visibly terrified Anika, clutching the purple bed sheet tightly in her fist. "Since when did you get so involved in haunted places and creepy stories?"
Sonalika laughed and flicked a stray hair strand away from her cheek. "I was secretly obsessed with them since school time and it's now that you get to know about this. Also, did I ever mention my supposedly haunted mansion?"
Sonalika was the descendant of the Routray dynasty who once ruled Kalinga, now presently called Odisha. The Routrays were celebrated kings under whom art, culture and military flourished. Among the east Indian dynasties, it was said that the Routrays possessed the best army.
Anika frowned and looked at her friend. "Why is it that all the haunted places are large bungalows and mansions? I don't see ghosts lurking in huts. But anyway, tell me about your mansion and I hope there isn't a very dark story behind the haunting."
"It's a love story, my friend." Sonalika smiled and sat up on the bed, her head against the headboard. "Our history books never recorded this incident. We, the Routrays, lived in Udayagiri where my haunted mansion still exists. Later, after one incident which I shall tell you in the story after some time, we moved to Katak and shifted our capital there. You can even look up about the Udayagiri mansion on the internet though there are many rumours and tales about the palace saying that there was a tantrik who practiced black magic and had cursed the dynasty to leave the place."
"But your mansion is well decorated and maintained. It doesn't look like a haunted place at all. If I am not wrong, a part of it is also a heritage hotel," said Anika.
"Yes, it's true. A part of it is a heritage hotel. That part was later renovated and maintained. The palace stretches over the entire Udayagiri hill. The heritage hotel is over the east side of the hill while the west side is in ruins. It is now a hot spot for paranormal investigators and young teens who want something adventurous."
Anika slid down the mattress and rested her head on the pillow, covering almost her entire body except her face, and said, "Tell me the story now."
"It was my dadi who told me this story who herself heard it from her mother. Generations ago, when the Routrays lived in the Udayagiri mansion, a handsome prince was born to them who was named Kavindra. His older brother, by two years, was Ravindra. The kingdom rejoiced on the birth of both the boys. Both the boys grew up to be fine men. They were trained in weaponry and holy texts by a famous guru. The people loved both the princes.
The second prince, Kavindra was attending a court meeting with his father and older brother when it was announced that a young veena player would grace the court after the meeting. The Routrays were the biggest patrons of the arts and always encouraged young artists. Kavindra enjoyed music the most and was looking forward to listening to some melodious music of the veena." Sonalika turned her body towards her friend, keeping a hand under her head, continued with a smile, "Little did he know that he would lose his heart to the veena player."
Anika removed some of the bedsheet from her body. "This sounds like those romance books you know. Prince falling in love with an artist and all that. What was the name of the veena player?"
"Eager I see," Sonalika chuckled. "Okay, so the name of the Veena player was Ragavathi. Beautiful name isn't it? Just like her beautiful name, she played the veena beautifully too. Her debut performance was at the court where she had enthralled everyone present there. Turns out that everything was beautiful about her. Her name, her music and her looks. The young prince's heart skipped a beat when he saw how the young lady smiled shyly at her audience before playing the veena. Later he was mesmerized when he saw her getting lost in the music she played on her instrument. By the time she left the court, she had taken a part of the prince's heart with her. She was then asked to perform for a big festival in the kingdom. Kavindra was ecstatic to hear that, and secretly hoped to steal some time and strike a conversation with her. Now, my friend, guess what happened next?"
"Kahani bata na tu yeh suspense nahi badha," said Anika, a frown adorning her forehead.
"Haan thik hai bata rahi hu. The festival takes place and our Ragavathi gives a brilliant show. Lucky for the prince, for he sneaked out from the company of his family and friends and walked to her to compliment her performance leading to a blossoming friendship. The king being highly impressed with Ragavathi often called her to the court to perform. Kavindra and she would then discreetly meet in the palace after her performance. Kavindra soon began to fall in love with her and so did Ragavathi, but they never brought up the topic of love during their conversation." Sonalika pressed her lips into a thin line. "And this is where the tragic part starts."
Anika opened the window behind her letting some of the nightly breeze in and sighed, waiting for her friend to continue the story.
"Months passed by. The prince was deeply in love with her. Sure, she was beautiful, but it was her music, her words and her thoughts that made her fall for her more. Being in the arts, she naturally possessed a very creative mind. She would show some of her own compositions to him and tell him about her ideas. She was also a very compassionate lady. Ragavathi too had fallen for the prince. But like every famous love story where the protagonists won't tell their feelings to their partners, our prince and veena player too did the same. One day, there was a huge birthday celebration for the eldest prince, Ravindra. Naturally, Ragavathi was also called to perform. But someone had casted an evil eye on the family. That day, their rival kingdom with some traitors in the Routray family lit the palace on fire. The celebration was taking place on the west side of the palace where even the royal family was present. It was a sudden fire and everybody panicked. The soldiers were helping the royal Family to escape first, but they stepped back and asked them to save the other commoners and guests first. They thought that it was an accidental fire, but it was a deadly ploy. The rival kingdom had sent soldiers to finish off the royal family in case they escaped the fire. The king and queen were shot dead with arrows. Ravindra had gone to help the women and children escape the fire and the soldiers. Kavindra went to find Ragavathi but somehow she was already escorted out of the palace by a soldier. Her veena burnt in the palace fire. The prince did not know that she was safe so he went to search for her desperately. But, fate did not support him and he was soon surrounded by soldiers of the enemy kingdom. He put up a brave-"
Anika interrupted her. "Wait. Don't tell me that the prince died."
"Sssh." Sonalika placed a finger over her lips. "Now this is a real story so I don't get to change the plot. He put up a brave fight but one man cannot win against five men so he was killed. By the end only, Ravindra survived with a handful of the noblemen. They then shifted to Kataka. Ravindra was made the king. He then married someone and the progeny of the Routrays continued."
"What happened to Ragavathi?" Anika asked with a sad pout.
Shrugging her shoulders, her friend replied, "Some say that she married someone later. She must have had a broken heart when she got to know that the prince was dead. However, she continued her life and music in Katak."
"And what about the haunting?"
"So many people died that day, but it is only the prince who haunts that side of the palace. I have read on a few blogs where people have posted saying they heard a manly voice cry at night and the sound of some notes on a veena. People say that the ghost has never troubled anyone but the sounds of him crying and the veena definitely spook them out. Some say that since the prince's love was incomplete he haunts the palace hoping for Ragavathi to come."
Both the friends then grew silent. Anika looked at the ceiling. She arrived in Cuttack, previously called Katak today morning. She was a history student at Ravenshaw University and had a project for her second semester. She had to present the culture and history of any kingdom from any part of India. She had a hard time deciding which dynasty she would work upon for she was searching for a dynasty that wasn't mentioned much in history yet had good amount of information on them.
An idea clicked her. Immediately she turned towards Sonalika.
"You remember I was telling you about my history project for college. I think I will do it on the Routray dynasty. I was thinking of doing the Gajapatis but they are already well known. Will you help me?" asked Anika.
Sonalika nodded her head excitedly, "Of course I will. You are my friend and also a project on my dynasty. Why will I refuse? Since I am the descendant of the Routrays, I can even take you the palace, the heritage hotel one. There is a lot of stuff there which I believe will help you."
"Thank you so much Sona. You are the best." Anika hugged her tightly. She was happy to gain access to the heritage hotel side, but her mind wavered to the west side of the palace. For some unknown reason, she wanted to look at the ruined palace.
"Chal ab sone ja. I will tell Maa and Bapa tomorrow in the morning about your project. They can also share some things relevant for your work and we will go to the palace right after breakfast.
Anika smiled and pulled the bed sheet over her face, excited for tomorrow. But little did she know that she was going to discover a lot more information about herself.

Adi Kabi Sarala Das
Adi Kabi Sarala Dasa
Sarala Dasa (born as Siddheswara Parida) was a 15th-century poet and scholar of Odia literature. Best known for three Odia books — Mahabharata, Vilanka Ramayana and Chandi Purana — he was the first scholar to write in Odia and his revered as the Adi Kabi (First Poet) of Odia literature. As an originator of Odia literature, his work has formed an enduring source of information for succeeding generations.
HERE SARALADAS BOOK AVAILABLE
Life-- The early life of Sarala Dasa is not accurately known. He was a contemporary of the Gajapati King Kapilendra Dev. Though the date of his birth cannot be accurately determined, he can safely be placed to the 15th century AD. He was born at a village called kanakavati patana known as Kanakapura at the Tentuliapada, Jagatsinghpur district.Sarala Dasa had no organized early education, and what he achieved through self-education was attributed to the grace of Sarala, goddess of devotion and inspiration. Though his early name was Siddheswara Parida, he was later known as Sarala Dasa, or 'by the boon of Sarala'. (The title Dasa means a slave or a servant of a particular god or goddess. A long list of poets, preceding and succeeding Sarala Dasa, have names ending this way. For example: Vatra Dasa, Markanda Dasa, Sarala Dasa, Jagannatha Dasa, Balarama Dasa, and Yasovanta Dasa.) A story – similar to those told of other Indian poets, . such as Kalidasa, supposedly illiterate in early life until helped by the goddess Saraswati – tells that Siddheswara as a boy was once ploughing his father's field and singing so melodiously that the goddess Sarala stopped and listened to his song and endowed him with her power of composing beautiful poems.
There are several indications in his Mahabharata that he served as a soldier in the army of the Gajapati King of Odisha.
Works--
As well as the three books for which he is best known – Mahabharata, Vilanka Ramayana and Chandi Purana - Sarala Dasa also wrote the book Laxmi Narayana Vachanika. The Adi Parva Mahabharata opens with a long invocation addressed to the Lord Jagannatha of Puri, from which it is known that Sarala Dasa started writing his Mahabharata in the reign of Kapileswar, otherwise known as Kapilendra Deva, the famous Gajapati king of Odisha (AD 1435–67). He tells us that Maharaja Kapilesvara with innumerable offerings and many a salute was serving this great deity and hereby destroying the sins of the Kali age.
Though Sarala Dasa followed the main outline of the Sanskrit Mahabharata in writing the Odia Mahabharata, he made numerous deviations and added to it copiously the stories of his own creation and various other matters known to him. In the final form Sarala Dasa's Mahabharata is a new creation analogous to Kalidasa's Raghuvamsa based on the Ramayana.
Mahabharata brought to light about the 18 parvas. The Chandi Purana was based on the well-known story of Goddess Durga killing Mahishasura (the buffalo headed demon) given in Sanskrit literature but here also the Odia poet chose to deviate from the original at several points. His earliest work, Vilanka Ramayana, was a story of the fight between Rama and Shahasrasira Ravana (thousand headed Ravana).
He wrote the poems in Dandi chand (in which chand the number of letters in the verses is not fixed is called as dandi chand). The verse of Sarala Dasa is simple, forceful and musical, without artificiality. Applying colloquial words for his poetical purpose, his writing was free from Sanskritisation. His work can be seen as adapting the popular oral conventions of earlier Odia folk songs which were used in folk dances such as the Ghoda-nacha (Horse Dance), Dandanacha and Sakhinacha (Puppet Dance). One metrical peculiarity of these songs is that both the lines of a verse do not contain an equal number of letters though the last letters of both the lines produce the same sound. All Sarala Dasa's wors were composed with this metrical peculiarity, and so the metre used by him can be regarded as a direct descendant of that used in the folk songs. By the fifteenth century the Odia language had assumed almost its modern form and had become ripe for literary compositions.
The predominant sentiment in Sarala Dasa's poem is not love but war. He was also motivated by a strong religious zeal to compose religious books in a language intelligible to all and to make them available to the general public in Odisha. He tells in no uncertain words that he composed his poems for the benefit of "human beings". There are several indications in his Mahabharata that he served as a soldier in the army of the Gajapati King of Odisha and his association with the army brought to him a variety of experiences. The stories he heard the battle scenes which he witnessed, the places that he visited with the company of the army the historical incidents and names that he could know all remained stored up in his mind to be utilized in his writings.

The special Odisha traditional Khandua Pata, woven with verses from the 12th-century Gita Govinda by poet Jayadeva, holds a sacred role at the Jagannatha Temple in Puri, symbolizing cultural and religious heritage. Khandua is typically red or orange, using natural dye from the shorea robusta (sal tree). Its design features an elephant representing Buddha, surrounded by vines, peacocks, a large flower, Nabagunjara, and a deula kumbha. Unlike other Orissan ikat, Khandua has plain borders. Weaver communities in Maniabandha and Nuapatana in Cuttack craft these textiles, historically presented to the Jagannath Temple during the Gajapati rule.

Krishnadevaraya.
Krishnadevaraya was an emperor of the Vijayanagara Empire, who reigned from 1509 to 1529. He was the third ruler of the Tuluva Dynasty.[citation needed] He ruled the largest empire in India after the decline of the Delhi Sultanate. Presiding over the empire at its zenith, he is regarded as an icon by many Indians. The Untold Story of a Chiranjeevi
During the starting years of Treta Yuga, In the hills of Janapav (Indore, M.P) Saptrishi and Maharishi Jamadagni lived with his wife Renuka. Both were blessed with a son named Rama Jamadagnya or Veerrama. Maharishi Jamadagni is also one of the Saptrishi (Saptrishi are those rishis who had knowledge of Vedas and Puran. And passing on that knowledge is their duty).
One day the king of Haihayas kingdom Mahismati is the capital of the kingdom. The name of the King is Kartavirya Arjuna went out hunting and he went to the hills of Janapav. There he saw the hut of Maharishi Jamadagni and asked Maharishi, that he was the king and wanted to rest in Maharishi's hut for a while. Maharishi agreed and allowed him in his hut. While resting King Kartavirya Arjun saw Maharishi's cow and he was attracted by that cow. He thinks that this beautiful cow doesn't deserve to be in this hut.
One day the king cheated and stole the cow from the hut and brought the cow to his Palace. Maharishi is in grief. He told the Kamadhenu had been stolen by the king and we could not fight with the King. But Rama Jamadagnya (Maharishi's son) promises to his father that he will bring Kamadhenu back.
Rama Jamadagnya went to the king's palace and asked for his cow back. King says that he will give the cow back if  Rama Jamadagnya defeats the king. Both King and Rama fought for a very long period and in the end Rama Jamadagnya won. he took his cow back.
After being defeated by a  Brahman, Kshatriya King Kartavirya feels ashamed and decides to kill the whole family.  King went to their hut and Maharishi was in deep meditation Kartavirya Arjun cut the head of Maharishi from his body. When Rama Jamadagnya came to know about it he decided to kill the whole clan of Kartavirya Arjuna.
Rama Jamadagnya is devoted to Lord Shiva and Lord Shiva already blessed him with an axe. It is believed that Kartavirya Arjun Had 1000 hands that's why it is not easy to kill him. Rama Jamadagnya and Kartavirya Arjun Came into war. Rama first cut his all hands and then cut his head with that axe. After that, Rama killed all the sons of the King and won the Haihayas Kingdom.
With his skills and Power with an axe, He is known as Parshurama (Rama with an Axe = parshu in hindi). But Rishi Parshurama realized that Brahman is treated very badly by the Kshatriya king and the King are very rude towards innocent peoples. He adapted the grief of society and the establishment of Dharma in society became the pledge of his life. He decides that he will clean society 21 times by the blood of Adharmi Kshatriya.
Rishi Parshurama is the only Rishi who knows how to play any weapon. He has the knowledge of the warfare and the celestial weapons. He meditated and devoted himself to Lord Shiva and When Lord Shiva was Happy with his devotion he blessed Rishi Parshurama with Pinnaka (celestial Bow). With Bow and axe, He moves forward to his pledge and Clears society 21 times with the adharmic Kshatriya King. But Rishi forgot that he had completed his pledge and now he has to stop. At that time Lord Hanuman came and realized to Rishi that now he had to stop.  After that Rishi Parshurama is known as Lord Parshurama (the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu).
After completing his pledge Lord Parshurama gave Pinnaka to King Janak and told him that the one who could hold this bow and tie the thread of this bow was the one capable of marrying your daughter. After doing the same Lord Parshurama went to Mahendra Mountain (In Gajapati, Odisha ) and himself in the meditation.
And when Lord Rama broke the Pinnaka Lord Parshurama came back and asked for the war. Lord Parshurama said, "It is a celestial bow how dare you break the bow". Lord Parshurama and Lord Rama are ready for the war. But Maharishi Vishvamitra told to Lord Parshurama that Lord Rama was the Incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Then Lord Parshurama realized and went back to Mahendra Mountain. Actually, Lord  Parshurama is the only incarnation of Lord Vishnu who is not aware that he is Lord Vishnu's Incarnation. Rest all the incarnations know who they are and What their motive is.
After Treat yuga we saw Lord Parshurama was also mentioned in Dvapara Yuga he is the teacher of Mahamahim Bhishma, Guru Rishi Dronacharya, and Maharathi Karna. He also had a war with Mahamahim Bhishma in which a student defeated his Teacher. That war was the last time Lord Parshurama was seen. It is believed that he went back to Mahendra Mountain of Meditation and He is waiting for Someone.
This is the untold story of a Chiranjeevi. Chiranjeevi lived till the end of the time. Why Lord Parshurama is Chiranjeevi???  It is believed that Mahapurash will live on the earth once their motive is completed on the earth but Lord Parshurama's Motive is not completed yet. He is waiting for the 10th incarnation of Lord Vishnu the Kalki avatar. Lord Parshurama will teach Kalki's avatar about the weapon knowledge and pass on the celestial weapon knowledge.
It is believed that Lord Parshurama is still at the top of Mahendra Mountain and meditating continuously till today.
Moral:- The one who connects with his own grief can never see that the whole world is suffering not a single soul. One who saw another's grief and adapted it and tried something to change it is known as the Lord.  Same as what Lord Parshurama did. After defeating Kartavirya Arjun, the Lord can rule the Haihayas Kingdom but then he is only known as King. But he moved ahead in life and adapted to the all grief of suffering people he is known as Lord Parshurama.
-Thank you-
-Sahil Chhajta
