Goodbye from gal-dem We are incredibly sad to announce that after eight years, gal-dem is closing.  As a platform dedicated to centring people of colour from marginalised genders, we have collectively created and grown as a community since 2015, however gal-dem continuing to operate as a business is unfortunately no longer feasible.  The hard decision to close the […] The post Goodbye from gal-dem appeared first on gal-dem. https://gal-dem.com/goodbye-from-gal-dem/

Bit of a shocker: gal-dem magazine is closing. It had a passionate following - I’m genuinely surprised that they couldn’t convert that into a stable business model.

IDEA 1
In the beginning I chose to make a magazine to visually convey my narrative. I planned to interview other second and third generation British Caribbean’s to collectively create a magazine that would resonate and showcase the livelihood of the British Caribbean community that I would consider hidden in plain sight.
From my perspective, a magazine for the youth seemed a bit risky as magazines aren’t necessarily what I would consider that popular amongst generation.
So I felt it was best if I did some research on the few magazines that are currently receiving a lot of engagement amongst the youth of today.
When conducting my research found most popular magazines are in the formate of an e-magazine, marketed via Instagram or other social media platforms which is where most of the younger generations interact.
During this stage I hadn’t scaled the key details that I needed to understand my audience demographic such as age, location, occupation, etc.
Initially, in my mind as a third generation, I was looking to engage with an audience of second and third generation individuals who were a part of gen Z to read my magazine.
Magazines that I looked to for inspiration in terms of marketing and layout were Gal-Dem Magazine and Guap Magazine.

There's always something cool in my mail slot via Stack Magazines monthly subscription, but the latest offering, gal-dem, is especially welcome. Described by Stack as "a magazine created by women and non-binary people of colour," gal-dem is a smart, compelling read, wrapped up in easy-to-read design and filled with beautiful imagery. So much goodness! As soon as I'm done I'm passing it along to my teenage daughters.

The Guardian Weekend: Three life-changing conversations (2020)
3 new illustrations in The Guardian’s Guardian Weekend. Illustrating the 3 winning stories from the newspaper’s essay competition for young black writers aged 16-21. So thankful as these were all amazing stories to read and draw on.
Amna Mukhtar was chosen for first place by the judges, for their piece about their Muslim faith and sexuality. Zakiyyah Deen ‘s story was on her alopecia journey, and in Olivia McDonald’s story, a mother opens herself up to her children. Out in this weekend’s The Guardian Weekend, as part of their conversations special, co-edited by Gal-Dem magazine.

Introduction- FAS3003
This is the final project for my Foundation year at BCU. After gaining new skills and techniques in preparation for the BA course, in this final project you should be able to see my developments from my time spent working. This module is a signature project where the tutors are allowing us to create whatever work we would like. In comparison to the last modules where we have worked around a subject in order to push new creative styles, this time we are allowed to cover whatever we enjoy as a fashion student. At first this seemed a little overwhelming for me as I became dependant on help but I believe this will really help me manage my time and work in preparation for next year.
As covid restrictions finally began to ease, we were able to return back onto campus for this last module. We branched out into groups based on our pathways and were introduced into this project. Below is some of the important information I felt stood out to me and what sort of outcome I would like for this project. On our days off prior this return to university, I thought it would be beneficial for me to storm some ideas id like for this project. I decided to create a mind map that could help me correlate some ideas in preparation.
Tumblr media
I based some of these ideas from my life experiences but also a lot of them have spouted from interests I have picked up over the past few years. As I only had the brief on Moodle to compare to, I didn't know what I could create yet as I didn't if there was a specific thing which I had to produce. Although I liked the last project, I felt like I wanted to move away from branding or creating a new brand as this was a lot of pressure and I think I would like a break from that particular route. My favourite project was the trend project and I think I am interested in creating a lookbook or zine for this final project as I would love to develop these skills and work into them so thy are better than before. The mind map above mainly consists of particular themes that I like rather than actual subjects. I think I thought I had to base my work around this knowing that it would be harder this way. For example Dystopia, I think if I were to do this I need some context into why I wanted to use this environment for my style of work. My most favourable ideas I have taken from this mind map would be Self-discovery, The arts/ Theatre industry and Feminist culture. All of these ideas relate to my life in a particular way and I think either of the three will energize me to create a successful outcome to end the year.
Lecture 1
Tumblr media
We were introduced into the lecture by watching this video above. This short film was of a women singing in Italian within a block of flats. When it had ended, we were questioned what sort of interpretations we got from the video. I found this video fairly mundane yet powerful. She sang with power and sadness while life moved on around her. This led into the designers work and how this video had set the scene for his theme. This was Gareth Pugh AW 2017. Our tutor suggested making a move with the similar intentions of helping shape our storyline. I thought this was an interesting idea as I do enjoy media content despite having no experience in making something like this.
Tumblr media
This was a textile designer, Michael Angove, which I also liked. The video shows us how he develops his interior work from photography shots into wallpaper. This was a very intricate process however, the idea of scanning in primary imagery into his work and correlating them into this floral pattern was inspiring. In the lookbook module, I briefly covered this however I would love to develop my photography skills and add some personal imagery into this project.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This part of the lecture I was the most engaged with. I think I am going to go down this route for this project as I find it the most interesting especially when adding context which is interesting to me. I think this time I am able to add more typography skills and other CAD skills like the images above in order to get the best intentions for my idea. Our tutor shown us some magazine sources which all produce different subjects of matter but could still gain some inspiration from. I needed this as I struggle with finding new imagery and sources for my ideas. If I were to do femininity for this project I am most defiantly going to look into the Gal-Dem magazine and how they lay their book out to engage their audience. I am going to add my own personal touched like the second image as I think it would be more sentimental rather than using secondary images like I had done previously.
Tumblr media
After the lecture, we were given a task in pairs where we discussed our initial ideas for the signature project. We were asked to make a mind map of ideas for the other person. This was good as we were able to receive new ideas and concepts which we may not have thought of on our own. I partnered up with Mia and the image above is the mind map she had created for me. This work was very contextual based which I needed as I find that my work doesn't have enough of this. I was stuck between creating a Femininity book or a Self-discovery/ help book for teenagers. I think both would be fun to create and I would like to show both. My tutor had suggested combining the two as they are fairly similar in ways when I discuss my intentions with the ideas. However, I don't want to take up this suggestion just yet as I have found that when doing this before, it resulted in not having enough time to include everything I want and overworking myself. This mind map has helped me narrow down my ideas and it is now down to me to choose which subject I would prefer to create for this last module. I am going to do some research suggested by Mia on both ideas which I hope will help me choose one concept.
