Language Goals May-December 2023
Time for some late language goals, I finally have 5 seconds to breathe sldbskdjskdhsl
French 🇫🇷
Achieve an A in my A-Level
Finish B1-B2 Coursera course
Read at least 2 of the following:
> L'Étranger
> Le Petit Prince
> Bilingual short story collection
> Bilingual magazine
Write (in rough order of difficulty):
500 words about a personal subject (could be my day, my week, a memory, aspirations etc)
A 500 word review of a piece of media
A 500 word persuasive essay
A 500 word informative article
5 drabbles (100 words of fiction)
500 words of poetry, and I'm giving myself the extra challenge of only using French poem styles, not the English ones I'm familiar with
This is going to be the most challenging aspect of my French goals because I haven't written creatively since my Wattpad era at 13/14, but it's something I want to try again!!
Watch 3 short-form and 2 long-form videos from ARTE
Be able to hold a 15 minute spoken conversation in French (if any fellow French learners want to practice together then lmk!! I have Discord :D)
Irish 🇮🇪
Written language: At least 4 units of my new textbook, Enjoy Irish
Spoken language:
> Rewatch some Now You're Talking and put previous notes into Anki
> Listen to a Speaking Irish episode at least once a week
Dabble Languages 🇨🇳🇳🇱🇧🇷🇷🇺
The flags listed are my 'main' dabble languages, but who knows, I may pick up something completely new or actually be within 10 feet of my German workbook sldhslhdksdhs
These aren't really goals, more just a reminder of what resources I have available to practice the languages if I feel like it.
Mandarin 🇨🇳
Continue with HSK 1 course
Check out Coffee Break Chinese
Dutch 🇳🇱
Review previous Anki vocab and complete 1 new chapter in my workbook
Brazilian Portuguese 🇧🇷
Find good resources and start using them
Russian 🇷🇺
Written language: 1 chapter of workbook
Spoken language: listen to Russian Made Easy

✨ 2024 Goals ✨
🇫🇷 Languages 🇮🇪
Achieve a first (70%+) in my French language module, as of the start of the second semester I'm sitting on a 76 but I have all of my 'difficult' exams in the summer so that could very well change 💀
In the first half of the year I want to have finished my current Irish workbook
In the second half of the year I want to buy a GCSE Irish textbook and start working through it, exact progress determined by what level I'm sitting at after my first workbook
🍄 Side Quests 🍄
These are things I want to be working on throughout the year to add some variety into my life :)
Cook as many different recipes with different types of mushrooms as possible 🛠
Be able to name every country worldwide, bonus quest: learn capitals and flags 🛠️
Improve my general knowledge, yes this is vague yes I'm still figuring it out
🌊 Bucket List 🌊
Miscellaneous fun things I want to do this year!!
Go on a tram ✅
Dye my hair ✅ (I have purple ends now :D)
Visit [areas of my uni city]
Visit York or Durham
Visit Swansea (<3)
Try some of the Arabic sweets I see in a shop window every morning walking to uni
Design a Year Abroad itinerary 🛠

Hot Enby Reading Weeks
I have 3 weeks until I move to uni (😳) and one of the hardest bits of packing will be choosing which books I'm taking with me. Obviously I'll have to limit my selection and I want to finish as many of my (physical) unread books as possible before then, so why not make a little liveblog/regular updates about it?
Books I want to get through in order of priority: (% indicates current progress)
The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova (7%)
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin (reread, 35%)
all about love by bell hooks (0%)
Kingdom of Characters by Jing Tsu (8%)
Bonus round: Babel by R. F. Kuang (reread, 0%)
Let's hope this will kick-start me back into reading :D

Exam Season Language Routine
It's May, aka pre-hot enby language summer A Level season 😔 my last exam is on the 19th June and then for the remainder of June I'm spending as much time as possible with my friends before we officially finish secondary school (screech) so for these next few weeks I want to get into regular language learning again before going all-out in the summer months!!
✨ Dailies ✨
Anki 🇫🇷🇳🇱🇮🇪
1 French grammar exercise 🇫🇷
Drops 🇮🇪
HelloChinese 🇨🇳
✨ Weeklies ✨ (ie pick at least one activity to do per day)
Monday 🇫🇷 : listen to the radio for 15 mins, read bilingual magazine or Le Petit Prince for 10 mins, work on word count goals
Tuesday 🇩🇪 : 1 ep Coffee Break German, 30 mins in workbook
Wednesday 🇧🇷 : 30 mins Teach Yourself workbook, 1 grammar point
Thursday 🇮🇪 : 30 mins Enjoy Irish, put Now You're Talking vocab into Anki, 1 episode of Speaking Irish
Friday 🇨🇳 : 30 mins HSK1 course, 1 ep of Coffee Break Chinese
Saturday 🇷🇺 : 30 mins in workbook, 1 ep of Russian Made Easy
Sunday 🇳🇱 : 30 mins in workbook, 1 video from DutchPod 101
We'll see how this goes, I'll try not to be too hard on myself, progress is progress after all!!

I was going to set 2023 language goals but I'll be honest, I'll have too much going on for most of this year to fully commit to language learning - I have my A Levels in May/June and I need to focus on them as much as possible so I can get into uni 😔
Anyway, here's some general 2023 goals/resolutions:
1. Pass my driving test - I need to do this before September, because if all goes well I'll be heading to England for uni and it would be difficult to continue lessons due to the slightly different road rules. Also, my theory test expires February 2024 and I'm not going through that again 😅
2. Get into uni - fairly self explanatory, I need ABB for the course I want to do!!
3. Learn how to cook - this has two parts, I want to gain confidence in at least 10 recipes and learn how to improvise - ie look in the fridge and pantry and be able to make a nice meal out of whatever's in there. Maybe I can revive my 'cottagecore' blog @flowerprintbread by posting cooking updates there, who knows :)
4. Read a book in French - I know I just said I wasn't doing language goals, but in my mind this is more of a preparing for uni goal. While I do study literature as part of A Level French, it's not compulsory to actually read the book in French so my teacher didn't do that. Idk if I'll actually read Thérèse Desqueyroux (my A Level text) in French since it's fairly difficult but I do own L'Étranger and a mystery novel translated into French, so maybe I'll read either of those!!
5. Find study techniques/routines that work for me - the past few months have been rough academically, and I need to figure out how to work with my brain rather than against it to fit the normal idea of what studying should look like. I'm currently researching ADHD study techniques to see if anything sticks, I have no idea if I'm actually neurodivergent or not but I sure do know that normal tips don't work for me.
Let's hope 2023 will be kind to us all <333

Above is a recording of my first few sections of orals, it's linked to my podcast Google account so thankfully I won't be doxxing myself skdhsksjls, anyway yeah if you click on it you can listen :) I'm not great at pronunciation though so apologies in advance. If you're new here I have a fairly severe speech impediment, and I will take advice and corrections on pronunciation and grammar but not on how to stammer less.
Transcript under the cut:
Mistakes I made and I'm aware I made: should be la deuxième section and les études futurs.

Soooooooo not the ending update either you or I hoped for, but it's the ending update we're getting
I did next to no language learning this summer, long story short turns out going through a big waiting period/life milestone/transitional period in your life can really do a number on your mental health, who would have thought???
Normally I'd say that "oh I learned that goals aren't everything and you have to adapt based on circumstance" etc etc but what I actually learned was that sometimes you gotta wait it out, like this week has been there first week all summer where I've been doing housework, uni prep, hobbies etc consistently, and that was only possible when the big source of stress was removed.
I'm hoping this academic year I can continue to make language learning posts as I start my linguistics and french degree, but in the meantime I'm gonna be liveblogging my quest to read as many unread books as possible before I leave for uni in 3 weeks :)

Hot Enby Language Summer is back!! Summer usually isn't a great time for me for various reasons, but dedicating a lot of time to languages and focusing on my goals was really good for me last year and I want to experience that again. This summer will be busier between different events, my part time job and writing my personal statement for uni (shudders) so I'm going to set less demanding goals, and maybe I'll actually achieve more goals than I did last year 😆
French 🇫🇷
Start learning next year's grammar
Participate in a langblr challenge
Log 30 hours of immersion in native/upper intermediate learner content
Irish 🇮🇪
Complete Now You're Talking
Copy up notes for Irish 101
Learn at least 500 words of CCEA Core Minimum Vocabulary for GCSE level
Make grammar notes from BBC Bitesize
Dutch 🇳🇱
Complete up to Week 6 of Dutch in 3 Months
Write a 'Halfway done' progress post and include a paragraph in Dutch
Mandarin 🇨🇳
Redo the first stage of HelloChinese without pinyin
Do 1 Hello Chinese lesson every day
Complete at least week 2 of Coursera HSK1 course and make notes
Log 4 hours of handwriting practice
Dabble languages: 🇩🇪🇷🇺🇧🇷
For me, dabbling means learning very casually/without set goals or structure :)
Hot Enby Language Summer will be running for 8 full weeks, from 4th July to 28th August, this is to give me some wiggle room on either side to sort out school stuff.
I'll try my best to do weekly update posts and I'll tag them with #hot enby language summer if you're interested in following along or if you simply don't want to see the posts :)

2022/2023 Academic Year Goals
This is more of a reference post than anything to keep myself accountable and stay on track, it's a big year and there's a lot riding on it :)
University
Meet all school deadlines for my personal statement and UCAS application
Write a personal statement I'm proud of
Attend an open day
Survive interview and offers season
Research some clearing options
Apply for student finance and accommodation in good time
Academic
Aim for AAB as my final grades
Make flashcards for business the same day if possible
Log as much French vocab as possible in Anki
Review maths topics by doing practice questions
Only miss homework deadlines for legitimate reasons (ie procrastinating/forgetfulness are not valid reasons)
Extra-curriculars
Take part in the school musical
Regular attendance at choir and orchestra
Meet all my deadlines for the school news team
Languages
Learn using an app every day
Active studying of at least 1 language at least once a week
Life
Try to keep up my job if possible
Keep track of my spending and save as much as possible
Pass my driving test
Health (in all its forms)
Exercise outside of school at least twice a week
Develop a solid morning and evening routine that includes mindfulness and a lack of screens
Try to have a social life when schedules allow it
Engage in hobbies that don't involve screens at least twice a week

French 🇫🇷
I did indeed start learning next year's grammar, even if only slightly, I brushed up on my knowledge of the passive voice which will be one of our main grammar topics
I just finished 7 days of the Happy Langblr Challenge and it was really beneficial for me
Immersion time: +2 hours 55 mins for a final total of 11 hours :D way less than what I originally planned but still a substantial amount considering I've never properly focused on immersion before
Irish 🇮🇪
Complete Now You're Talking - no 😔
I decided to leave my Irish 101 notes goal for now so it would be easier to concentrate on Now You're Talking, and for other practical reasons I may get into on another post
Learn 500 words of CCEA Core Minimum Vocabulary for GCSE - surprisingly yeah, I finished the last of the words on Saturday :D
Grammar notes from BBC Bitesize - yes, I made notes on the present tense
Dutch 🇳🇱
Complete Week Six of Dutch in 3 Months - no, I'm not even done with Week Four
This then means that my update post/Dutch paragraph was not completed either
Chinese 🇨🇳
Redo the first stage of HelloChinese without pinyin - yeah!!
Complete one new lesson on HelloChinese every day - also yes
The Coursera related goals were not achieved but I probably will go back and do the course at some point, it's a good companion to HelloChinese
Overall, did I understand what 'less demanding goals' were this year compared to last year? No. Did I try my best anyway and saw substantial language improvements? Yes :) it's been a good Hot Enby Language Summer, now time to design Hot Enby Language School Year (this is semi a joke but I don't trust myself to promise not to make this the name of my school year language goals)

Things I learned:
Pronunciation - I don't really get it yet but I'm sure I will with more exposure.
Grammar - I learned how to make nouns plural using the long vowel/syllable rules, as well as pronouns, to have/to be and forming questions.
Vocab - OK one of the immediate downfalls of this book is that there's no rhyme or reason to the vocab learned?? I really would have appreciated an overview of definite and indefinite articles but noooooooooo that's week 2 work and instead I'm learning what the word for lion is (de leeuw). It's really just teaching me vocab I'll need for the exercises instead of common words and idk how I feel about that, very 'learn this list of pencil case items that you'll rarely, if ever use again' first year French vibes.
Some sentences:
Ja, ik ben moe (yes, I am tired)
Zij is mooi (she is beautiful)
Hij heeft de maan (he has the moon)
Hebben de buren een leeuw en een boot in de tuin? (Do the neighbours have a lion and a boat in the garden?)
I'm very glad I took the extra time to really learn the vocab properly, since I feel like I have a very strong grasp on the content and I can write basic sentences with them, but I think I need a more efficient method so I can get through a chapter in the book in less than 2 months. Maybe adding the vocab to Anki before I properly go through the chapter, and adjust my Anki settings as well? I'll have to see how this goes :D
