Games Workshop when a product is revealed ahead of schedule because of an internal error: Whoopsie! Our bad! Really cool paintjob on that model, though!
Wizards of the Coast, same situation: Our only option is to send in the guys who are famous for lighting strikers on fire.

Bryan Ansell has passed away at age 68 (11 October 1955 -- 30th December 2023).
Bryan Ansell founded Citadel Miniatures in 1978 in partnership with Games Workshop, and co-wrote the original 1983 Warhammer Fantasy Battles first edition rules with Richard Halliwell and Rick Priestley. He became managing director of Games Workshop in the mid-1980s, and was primary owner of GW until selling his shares in 1991. He also founded Wargames Foundry / Foundry Miniatures, which continues to produce many older Citadel figures among many other ranges.

Sick of 40k lore being like "The Emperor may have directly or indirectly squandered every ounce of potential the human species has and doomed it to a slow and painful death at it's own hands, but he was very wise and was secretly right all along!"
I want someone to call him a dumb motherfucker
GW give me a proper Big E roasting session goddamnit

Today. 👏🏻
We I give an answer to a question you never asked.
Tumblr media
And no I don't mean the minis. I mean the actual armor. If it was real, how much would it approximately cost to paint?
So first things first. Lets explain our variables.
Tumblr media
(The board bas been censored to avoid spoilers)
We have on the first column the name of each primarch.
The second we have how much 1kg of pigment costs. Note that each Primarch has a different pigment thus different cost.
Third is the 1.5 kg. With the power of math I concluded that each primarch would need 1.5kg of pigment to have their armor painted. (We will assume that all primarchs armors will have the same sqft of surface that needs to be coated).
Forth is the fixed cost. That is the general cost for supplies, coat, varnish etc. Again we will assume that this cost is the same for everyone because I like being sane.
And finally we have the total cost. We add the add the 1.5 kg cost with the fixed cost.
Tumblr media
Corvus / 3048,075 €
Russ / 3066,945 €
Fulgrim / 3202,605 €
Perturabo / 3211,875 €
Magnus / 3251.85 €
Perturabo's armor paintjob costs a lot more than Fulgrim's. So that's that.
Tumblr media
Vulkan / 3309,04 €
Omegon / 3310,71 €
Konrad / 3334,8 €
Lorgar / 3398,34 €
It's not a huge bump in cost. Still very much rational. It's just the paintjob right? They have to redo it all the time.
Right?
Tumblr media
Alpharius / 3405,21 €
Ferrus / 3410,715 €
Mortarion / 3410,715 €
Horus / 3461,535 €
Lion / 3674,73 €
Angron / 3741,75 €
Sanguinius / 3957,39 €
So far the numbers are pretty tame. Except angel boy who was so close to breaking the 4k mark.
But...
We are missing two people here...
Tumblr media
On the number 2 of the most expensive armor paintjob we have...
A round of applause please.
Roboute / 45091,5 €
No. You saw correctly. The lord of Ultramar needs to spend 45k to paint his armor.
Where did that number come from?
Fun fact.
The original ultramarine was lapis lazuli. The precious gemstone. And let me tell you something about lapiz pigment...
Tumblr media
It's expensive. 💸💸💸
But let's not wait any further.
On number one we have...
Dorn / 95346 €
Yes.
95k just to paint his armor.
My man...
My myth...
My legend...
Every time he goes to a crusade one planet's taxes need to be spent just for his armor to stay nice and painted.
Tumblr media
The lesson of this long ass post?
There is none, besides
Dorn and Guilliman are two high maintenance fatherlovers.

Tyrant Neuroguard (2023) -
A few years ago I worked on a premise sparked by old Tyranid lore, wherein Space Marine DNA was rumoured to have contributed to the development of Tyrant Guard. Namely, what if the Hive Mind acquired something even more dangerous, like Primaris or even Grey Knight DNA? The idea from there was to design a larger, more advanced Tyrant Guard as a response, but I didn't finish the project as I felt it wasn't distinct enough from the current Tyrant Guard models, save for the reintroduction and modification of the 3rd edition shield.
More recently with the release of the various 'Neuro'- prefixed Tyranids, I was inspired to adapt the project to fit into this wave of really cool new bioforms. I see them as psychic batteries or capacitors, similar in role to a larger Neuroloid or Neurogaunt, and no smarter than base form Tyrant Guard, but able to passively receive and store psychic energy from Synapse creatures and instinctively discharge the energy via the spines on the front of its shield, or the ends of its Lashwhips, almost like an electric eel. The face design was inspired by historical helmets like the Barbute, utilising side mandibles that have thickened and morphed into defensive cheek plates.

Gaunt Summoner I painted for the General Handbooks cover. This character has lots of different textures to him which was a nice challenge to paint.

I have been thinking a lot about what makes 40k sooo good and engaging after all these years.
Games Workshop have really managed to create a modern mythology, an amalgamation of fantasy and sci-fi tropes, of pop culture references, of modern day and past politics and sonehow made that into its own very distinct thing.
It somehow feels both very current and timeless at the same time.
People ofthe harp on about “40k is so grimdark, it’s so gritty and realistic”, but I don't think that is its true appeal.
I think it is the whimsy and not the darkness that is the true appeal.
Think about the first thing that makes you drawn to 40k.
Almost every person I ask this question will answer something silly, whimsical or over the top, before even touching the grimdarkness.
We live in a post-GoT age where EVERYTHING fantasy adjacent has to be as gritty and dark and realistic as possible. And people are already so sick of it. (either that or its superpolished marvel/disney:esque family-friendly with no substance behind it at all)
Let fantasy be cool and whimsical again. The world needs more weird and repulsive beauty.

The Horus Heresy in 18 seconds.
The only thing I have to add to the video is
🎶🎶🎶All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run faster than my bullet🎶🎶🎶
(I think I'm the only one who will find that part funny, but you know what. It's ok. If we die, we die.)
