Catching glimpses of the bonkers Gaylor breakdowns from your blog gives me the same vibes as when the Folding Ideas guy suddenly dropped a feature-film length video on how the r/gamestock memers had spiralled into a financial conspiracy cult and were bothering actual store workers over "Bed, Bath and Beyond mergers". Just, out there living in a whole parallel universe. The pandemic sure Did Things to people.
(Also, christ, the leaps in logic to get from "Taylor saying she deliberately focussed on female friendships because she knew the heteronormative tabloid media was less likely to do weird, stress-inducing invasive nonsense toward them" to "I guess Tay is a homophobe who personally hates us" certainly is a process to behold.)
I mean listen the pandemic wasn't great for anybody's brain to be sure but we can't pretend that Gaylor started in 2020 that shit's been going on since 2014 AT LEAST

you know how the gamestock conspiracy redditors call themselves ableist slurs and say “ape together strong” to imply that the vast droves of them in their falsely self aware stupidity can crash the global economy well in this imagining they envision themselves as “apes” which to them means gorillas, animals they see as unintelligent but powerful, especially en masse. well this is stupid because humans are apes. they are already apes. and humans together are strong, but not because they can be big and tough and beat things up, but because they can communicate and teach and learn and strategise and understand “difficult” concepts like the very basics of the stock market. anyway this is very obvious but I think a lot about how they have not only been deceived into thinking that their stupidity is their strength but also have been misled into some bizarre view of phylogenetics, specifically, for some reason, of the same variety that people who think noah’s ark was real use to say evolution is made up. anyway I guess I’m saying that conservative christianity and its stupidity is my tuberculosis. everything stems from it, we always come back here eventually.

deeply serious HBO miniseries about the rise and fall of a ruthless hedge fund manager who fucked over everyone who got in his way including friends and family only to throw himself out the window of his 40th floor office after losing everything during the Gamestock affair

Say, whatever happened in the end with the internet holding all those Gamestock shares against short sellers? Did the whole thing eventually just run out of steam? Redditors hold out until the price was high enough and then rake it in? Stock trade bigwigs eventually raise enough of a fuss over people holding them accountable for spending imaginary imaginary money that the FTC stepped in on their behalf?
What was that, like a year and a half ago now. Time is confusing these days and honestly I'd like it to move faster for a while since there's someone I desperately want to visit but there's odd time conditions need to be hit first.
That aside
Looks like some of them did the smart thing and cashed out making a bunch of cash, there were folks in there that didn't care about the money and just wanted to hurt the investors which they managed to do as well.
Dogecoin wound up surging a good deal a bit after so I think some went and invested in funny yellow dog money, which tanked as usual. (You don't get doge as a serious investment)
I'd have to head over to wallstreet bets and sift to see the full story, but big picture seems to be after a while things went back to normal for everyone and the different trading apps and such apologized for being dicks to the little guys for a bit there when they changed the rules to favor the big guys.
Not sure if the SEC did anything with it either, in the end I think most of them achieved the goal that they wanted to achieve.
wasn't something I kept a strong eye on though

Rewatching Folding Ideas vid on Gamestonk / Bed Bath Beyond and while its totally outside the scope of his video & i understand perfectly why he didn't add it in, i hope someone does a just as researched dive into the 3rd big "meme stock" post gamestock, AMC. the story of AMC becoming totally retail investor owned & subsequently unable to work as effectively due to that (because retail investors don't vote in shareholder votes) is a key part of the phenomenon. Would be drier because there's less funny conspiracies but its fascinating

It would be cool if the Government would put as much effort into fighting COVID as they are currently using to stop people from buying GameStop stocks.

Full "reddit (and twitter) buys gamestop to spite short sellers" story, from someone who watches finance communities
I watch r/Wall Street Bets and related reddit communities as a hobby. I don't have screenshots but it's all on the sub (unless it goes private, but that's temporary) back a few months you'll see what I mean.
Some redditors on a subreddit known for stupid, yet successful stock and option plays found out that gamestop stock had a bunch of short sellers. This subreddit also says the r slur a lot.
Short sellers are people that borrow stock from other people willing to lend theirs at whatever price it is now, and sell it immediately. This is in the hopes that the stock will drop
Later on, they buy back that stock at a presumably different price and pocket the difference or loss.
It's like if every Mazda was the same, you could loan your Mazda out to someone they can do whatever they want with it as long as they get you *a* Mazda back. Every stock for each company is (usually) identical.
A lot more people that aren't big banks or institutional investors got into stock trading last March of 2020 with the social isolation, the stimulus checks, and some desperation thrown in. This is "retail investors/traders." Most short sellers and most stock/option money in the game is from banks and the wealthy.
R/wall street bets has had a habit of pumping stocks they believe in. They're why Tesla is, mathematically, overbought, as well as a few other companies. This ain't the first time. The reason they went for gamestop now *again* is out of spite, because they tried and failed to pump it before when Gamestop and Microsoft had some venture going i don't remember, but the short sellers depressed the price artificially (cus if a lot of people sell stock, it goes down)
When short sellers buy back their stock, it goes up. It's called a short squeeze. WSB decided to pump GME to force the shorts to buy back their position early, and therefore cut their losses, and therefore buy back their borrowed stock, and therefore make GME go up. This is the short squeeze. Gamestock was like... $15 a few months ago. Now it's $140 because reddit got mad

funniest part of gamestock (and the part that's probably going to lead to horrid legislation about average people online trading) is the rich hedgefund assholes who are calling what the redditors did "hacking" because legally buying stock in a company and in no way using code is totally hacking yall
