Not much of a species description since you can't see their faces but look at this little couple!

These two are off to a new home tomorrow! A Gang Gang Cockatoo and a Bluebird Raptor.
The Raptor was one of my keepers. I allow myself to keep a certain number of pieces I make. If I've gone over that number, someone needs to go out into the wild! In this case, I'm very happy knowing he'll be going to someone who will love and appreciate him the way I do. :)

Pretty sure I forgot to post my last 2 vulnerable animal week 2022 drawings on here 😅 so here's day 4, winter, and I picked the gang gang cockatoo.
Gang gang's are primarily found in higher altitude forests, so you can sometimes see them in the snow! This is a male, the females have a grey head instead of the vibrant red

Gang gang cockatoo
Tumblr media
Where several pairs have nested close together, ‘crèches’ may be formed -and the young will roost together in the same tree while their parents are foraging. Of course, those of us who love birds know that its named after a charismatic species of cockatoo, but I bet its a long time since there were any Gang-gangs. The male gang-gang has a slate-grey body with a bright scarlet red head. Both incubate the two eggs and feed the young that stay with the family group during the breeding season. Gang-gang cockatoos are small sized grey cockatoos with a soft wispy crest. Old growth forest and woodland are needed for nesting and roosting as they like other cockatoos require hollows that are 10 cm in diameter or larger.Īt breeding time the female will choose a nest hollow in a suitable tree and both male and female prepare the nest, lining it with wood-chips and dust by chewing at the sides of the hollow. Gang-gang Cockatoos form monogamous pairs. They have a preference for eucalypts, wattles and introduced hawthorn but will also eat berries, fruits, nuts and insects and their larvae. Gang-gangs feed in flocks of up to 60 birds outside of the breeding season, they feed in pairs or small family groups during the breeding season. In winter they move to lower altitudes into drier, more open forests and woodlands. It is rare at the extremities of its range, with isolated records known from as far north as Coffs Harbour and as far west as Mudgee.ĭuring summer, the Gang-gang Cockatoo may be found in tall mountain forests and woodlands, with dense shrubby understoreys where during the warm parts of the day they rest in leafy trees, but during rain and snow showers they may perform aerobatics. It occurs regularly in the Australian Capital Territory. In New South Wales, the Gang-gang Cockatoo is distributed from the south-east coast to the Hunter region, and inland to the Central Tablelands and south-west slopes. The Gang-gang ockatoo is distributed from southern Victoria through south- and central-eastern New South Wales. They range in length from 32 to 37 cm, and a wingspan of 62 to 76 cm. The male is easily identified by its scarlet head and wispy crest, while the female has a grey head and crest and feathers edged with salmon pink on the underbelly. Gang-gang Cockatoos are primarily slate-grey.

I know it's pretty basic to make her a sulfer crested cockatoo inspired aurealian but I can't really think she'd look good any other way. Maybe it might work as a Major Mitchel, or Galah....but I highly doubt I can pull it off.

Something I’ve noticed since I’ve read a article about it (I can link it if needed, it’s a PDF and I’m not too familiar with tumblr but it should be easy to find?) is that gang-gang cockatoos and cockatiels look pretty similar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(These images are not mine, they can be found easily through google search in images.)
See? They both have similar facial (or skull) structures, both have gender differences between males and females (both the females of these species are more grey than their more vibrant counterparts), both have crests and both are within the Cacatuidae family.
The article that I’d read claimed that the Callocephalon family in the Cockatoo family is more closely linked to cockatiels and honestly, I can see it. Although, the cockatiel and gang-gang cockatoos natural areas aren’t very close to eachother (the cockatiel isn’t in the lower parts of Victoria, sadly.)
Perhaps this could be some sort of offshoot? Although as of now I’ve seen nobody else make this claim (aside from this article that I cannot verify) and I do wonder if it’s truthful or not.

Gang-gang cockatoos feel so fake. You're telling me this is just how they look? They are just in the wild and look like that all the time? They're just sweetie-pie coded?

The Red Peafowl trailer is out! 👀
youtube
Some reactions–
Heavily Sino-Thai, emphasis on the Sino part. Some shots of Shanghai and street scenes that look like they might have been filmed in China/Hong Kong.
Hong Kong Que is not actually a reference to Hong Kong (unless there's more they've not shown) – it's the hanyu pinyin transcription of Red Peafowl in Mandarin, where hong (红) means red and kongque (孔雀) means peacock or peafowl. The words for Hong Kong are totally different (香港 or xianggang).
Lu Yi Peng is played by Maiake Kandis, and it seems he's an inspector skilled in martial arts who goes undercover to infiltrate the mafia headed by Red Peafowl, played by Dollar Patchara. And of course the two get romantically and sexually entangled.
Max Nattapol plays Red Peafowl's husky lover/seducer, sounding like he has a case of COVID.
Earth Katsammonat is protagonist Lu Yi Peng's brother, who is kidnapped by a shadowy someone who sounds like (but doesn't look like) Max.
There are hawks and hawkshead rings on shadowy figures in this, looking to take down Red Peafowl's gang.
Frank Thanatsaran looks totally different from how he did while with GMMTV.
Boun Noppanut, Lee Long Shi, and Mek Jirakit are part of Red Peafowl's mafia family. Everything they say and do is performed with theatricality, as though to emphasize the sense of foreboding and import. Lots of arched eyebrows and drawling delivery.
Red Peafowl has a huge back tattoo, and guess what it's of? (Hint: it's a big bird, not white or yellow, and it's not a phoenix or a cockatoo.) Kinnporsche has a lot to answer for.
Hooped earrings on both ears appears to be a popular trend among the Chinese mafia.
The martial arts fight scenes look a little slow and klunky, like they need to be speeded up 10%.
Still no clue as to why there's a (sulphur-crested?) cockatoo in this.
Despite what your eyes tell you, Mix Sahaphap is not in the show:

(above) Dollar Patchara, doing his best impersonation of post-graduation Mix Sahaphap glowering in the torched ruins of his veterinary clinic after rescuing one of the birds within (arson plotted by GMMTV perhaps?)

The Gang-Gang Cockatoo! One of the only species I've covered to be known commonly by its actual Aboriginal Name! (either from the Ngunnawal or Wiradjuri people, although it's possible both called them this).
GangGangs are a pretty interesting cockatoo, as you can see their crest is rather wispy and fluffy rather than the straight feathers you find on most Cockies. The ladies of this species are quite similar but are missing the red face and crest of the gentlemen presented here. Instead they have an adorable grey miniature crest
