March 2024: Things Expected & Unexpected
Our order of onion starts arrived from Dixondale:
Tumblr media
Did a little prep work in the garden this week. That orange layer of leaf litter has been down for a couple of weeks but this week I added some of our compost and some lime (We noticed some moss & algae in the bed last year which can be an indication of the soil being too acid):
Tumblr media
Seriously, you can make that rich black compost with just lawn clippings, leaf litter & the vegetable waste from your kitchen:

We visited my mom on Sunday. This is a photo of her she shed after a tree limb fell on it:

Mystery plant... possibly a hellebore but we aren't sure at this point:

Our 2024 Garden: starting tomatoes, peppers and milkweed (video)
Okay, so I’m really a week early for this, but I decided to start more seeds, anyhow! It was also an excuse to finally get my video making software up and running on the new computer. That was far more complicated than it should have been, but once it was all set up, everything went well. Plus, PBC makes a cameo appearance. This time, I started the three varieties of short season bell peppers…

Tino shows us how to shape up and prepare veggie beds for bumper spring and summer crops. Subscribe 🔔 http://ab.co/GA-subscribe
Clean up:
Rake up leaves and dirt that has built up around the vegie patch to help discourage pests and diseases and create a nice clean space to work in. Chuck it all in the compost.
Weeding:
Weeds still grow in the cold and can be a useful cover crop when not much else is growing. It’s important to keep on top of them though around your winter dormant plants such as asparagus and rhubarb, as they can cause root competition and disturb the crowns. It’s a good time to remove them before planting new crops too.
Soil & food:
It’s vital that the soil is in good shape, ready for new crops to be planted. Check the soil pH by using a test kit. Close to neutral (a pH of 7) is perfect for most vegies. If it’s on the acidic side, fork in some lime 2 weeks before planting.
Next, rake back mulch and loosen up the soil, which is especially important for root crops. Then add lots of compost, aged manure or blood and bone and lay mulch on top.
It’s feeding time for perennials too. As rhubarb starts to sprout it’s the perfect time for a feed. Tino applies a large helping of blood and bone around the plant, covered with a layer of compost.
Crop rotation:
Brassicas are heavy nitrogen feeders and it’s best not to plant them in the same spot year after year, or pathogens could build up. Instead plan to rotate crop families. Plant a legume or root crop after brassicas as they don’t require as much nitrogen, or if you’re determined to plant another heavy feeder such as potatoes, refresh the bed with plenty of new food.
Planting:
If you’re keen to get a crop in straight away, Tino recommends choosing seeds over seedlings. Go for a quick producer such as radishes, lettuce, or parsley, that will be in and out in 6 weeks. Don’t plant too much too early if you’re in a cool climate as young plants will suffer in the chill. And don’t forget to leave some room - there will be plenty more to plant as the weather warms up!
Featured Plants:
ASPARAGUS - Asparagus officinalis cv.
(Check before planting: this may be an environmental weed in your area)
RHUBARB - Rheum x hybridum cv.

Dc/Dp Uncle Danny Au
So if Clockwork adopts Danny and Clockwork is Kronos, does that mean Danny is Zeus’s baby brother? If so, then Danny would be Wonder Woman’s uncle.
Danny joins the League on some mission and a sleazy villain starts saying things about Diana and before she can punt the villain into the sun, Danny just goes full eldritch,
“D̶͙̈́͒͘o̸̝͙̙͛̋͘͜͝n̵̦̔̐͂’̸̼͊̃͋̆̔͗͂t̷̛͕̪̠̔̇̅̋̇ ̴̹͎͖̯̠͐̋̑͆̋̚ẗ̵̠̟̞̱͉͌͋̃̊́̾͝ͅa̶̡̔͛l̷̜̋́̃ḳ̴̻̰͉̝͖̜̱̈́̒̓́̐̂̏̓͠ ̵͔̿͗́́̈́͂͠a̷̫͙͚̿͒b̶͔̣̳̘̾̾̔̌̈̾ǫ̴̘̮̀̆̀̋̆̓̅́͝ủ̷̝͖͚͇͓̰̱͌̀͂̈́̉̽̏͆͜ţ̸̧̩̯̪̦̣͋͋͗͝ ̶͔́ḿ̷̲̎̌̈͠ÿ̶̨͇͓̲̘̻̰́̑̀͊́͝ ̷̡̘̠̞̖͚̀̐̿͛n̴̲̄i̷̢̨̡͎̪͚͓̟͑̆̕e̸̱̻̲͈̳̥̓̐̃̕̕c̵̡̯̹̹̬͈̲̤̔͒̔̃̿̍̈̕ë̷͙͙̝̻̩̝́̎̈́̏̅̏̔̆͜͝ ̴͓͖̻͎͍̳̝̙̥̀̋͝͝t̸̢̨̖̰̰̟͚̻̀̄̀̏̇̍̕ͅh̸̢̦͈͍͓̱͈͔͕̉͑͋̓̈́͘͘̚a̶̩̗͌̆͌̔̔̊̉́́t̵̡̩̰̗̭̋ ̷̠̱͉̝̰̪̓̆͋͌͆̑̆̚ẇ̸̼͖̟̰̗̻̜͔̿̓̌͘͝ą̸̱͍̪̲̜͋̓̋̓y̸͎͖̦̩̳̓̋̀̔̾̃,̸̹̜̣̮̗̺̖̈́́ͅ ̶̯̼̈̍̇̐̽͛̕y̸̤͉̕o̷̠̼̖͚̯͖͙̔̈́̄̐͜ǔ̸͔̦͌̎̈́͜ ̶̩̝̼̘̳̣̗̤̫͆̑͐̓p̷̰̳̣̒̿̊̈̅̚͝ę̶̡͇̼̭͖͓̜̈͗͜͝r̷͇̳̤͎̝̥͕͍͐̓̅̓̈͠v̷͇̝͎̈́ë̸̖̲̖̲̈́̃̄̄͆r̷̡̠̣̙͠t̴͙̹̿!”
and sends the villain to the shadow realm.
Diana: Did you say niece?
Danny: Kronos adopted me. Oh, Pandora also says hi!
Diana:
Rest of the League:
Bruce: *Sadly tears up half filled out adoption papers*
Or maybe Clockwork and Bruce co-parent him and Diana has fun calling Bruce grandpa Idk
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Zalgo text says, “Don’t talk about my niece that way you pervert.”

Some small things that happened recently, other than the llamas’ shearing:
1. I traded a bottle of my freshly-made elderflower syrup (and some plum chutney from last summer) for a jar of wild peach jam and some homemade pâté, and the chickens went WILD over the latter. I gave them a tiny bit for a taste and then had to retreat to the kitchen to eat the rest because they kept jumping up and down trying to steal it
Tumblr media
2. I told the librarian a while ago that I was hoping to rehabilitate the former little pond in my pasture and she came over with her husband and daughter to give me a pond liner they had in their garage (they wanted to create a pond in their garden and procrastinated for 15 years basically.) A very nice gift!! But the highlight of their visit was when we went to the pasture to say hello to the baby llamas, and Pampelune fell in love with the librarian’s daughter. I’d never seen her like this! she just kept staring adoringly and asking for neck scritches and whispering sweet llama things in her ear.
Tumblr media
I replied to an ask the other day saying llamas aren’t really animals that enjoy being cuddled, but I guess I’d just never seen a llama with a crush.
3. My little vegetable patch is happy with this warm spring; the 2-year-old strawberry plants are going strong, and I’ve also got tomato flowers and male & female courgette flowers, so all is going according to plan.
Tumblr media
My one young raspberry plant valiantly produced two raspberries, which reminded me that I meant to plant more of them. I went to the agricultural store, and told them in passing that the persimmon sapling I bought from them last autumn is looking rather dead, and they gave me a few apology raspberry plants for free. I went home and discovered that the persimmon is actually making one very tiny bud! Now I feel like a con artist :( But look at this shy little thing (on the right), it’s so discreet...
Tumblr media
(left: girl courgette blossoms)
4. At the agri store I was invited to enter a raffle to win a 100-year-old olive tree. After filling up the little form with my name and phone number I was granted permission to take a second slip of paper and enter Pandolf’s name and phone number (I buy his kibble there so he is a valued customer). I hope he wins.
5. The sheep that are supposed to trim the grass around the store were napping in the shade, not a single one of them was working. I did not report them, because a sheep union representative came to touch my hand with its nose softly.
Tumblr media
6. I also bought (half of) a former wine barrel to use it as an additional trough for the animals—I wanted one near my house so I wouldn’t have to trek across half the pasture on winter mornings to go break the ice, and there are two rivulets there that made the ground muddy, so it was better to dig some channels and add some pipes and have them flow into something. Digging a hole for the barrel was as exhausting a task as ever (so many huge rocks!), I’m glad I’m done with the New Trough project. I also had to rinse the barrel and air it out for a few days because it very much smelled of bordeaux wine, but here it is now, using its transferrable skills to start a second career:
Tumblr media
I love hearing this new & very soft trickling water noise when I sit outside my house!
7. Pandolf, on our way home from the agri store, enjoyed the wind in his mane. (That’s it that the last piece of news.)

Cheaply Starting Seeds
This is my fourth post in a series I’ll be making on how to increase biodiversity on a budget! I’m not an expert--just an enthusiast--but I hope something you find here helps!
Having a high-quality seed-starting setup can feel like an ultimate but distant dream. An entire shelf--an entire room, even, filled with grow lights and plant trays in the optimal setup to make tons of plants? Tons of garden tools, each with a diverse and dedicated purpose? That’s just not an option for some of us. But that doesn’t mean we can’t get started at a low cost!
Seed Starting Set-Ups
Speaking from a somewhat biased Floridian perspective, I’ve had great success starting seeds outside! My usual set-up is on a rarely-used outdoor patio table that’s moved to a sunny spot in the yard, but I’ve even grown seeds in solo cups on sidewalks, or directly in the ground, with great results!
Tumblr media
Some seeds grow best when they go through a cold period before germinating, while other seeds aren’t affected much by it and just wait for warm weather. As such, a viable option is to sow your seeds in late fall, let winter roll by, and wait until the seeds sprout on their own come spring! I would try and mark off where you planted said seeds, so you don’t lose track of them and accidentally dig them up.
Tumblr media
Alternatively, if you want to get started while it's cold outside, a popular option I've seen is to grow in milk jugs! There's a lot of different ways to do it--everyone has their preference--but if you're already drinking things like milk or juice or sweet tea, and you're going to get jugs at some point in time--why not use them for gardening?
Tumblr media
An easy way to clear up a section of lawn to create open gardening space is by using a sheet mulching or lasagna gardening method (though I like to call it the Cardboard Snuff-Out). Place cardboard or newspaper down in fall/winter to mark out where you want to garden. Layer compostable materials like grass clippings and wood chips on top of it, or potting soil/bagged compost. It’ll decompose over Winter into an organically rich bed that’ll have killed the grass and weeds underneath it. You don’t have to break out any tools and sweat over it come spring, and the cardboard itself will slowly decompose as well!
Tumblr media
Though it's often recommended to plant things directly into the ground to decrease watering needs and increase nutritional independence, there’s plenty of reasons you may not be able to. Whether you’re renting, living in a place without a yard, or even just can’t or don’t want to break ground in a yard, you can still help biodiversity by growing in pots. Some plants have rather extensive root systems and aren’t well suited for pots, but there are still plenty of options available for plants that’ll boost biodiversity, be beautiful to look at, and grow just fine in pots! A recommendation is to get a larger pot, if you’re able, as it’ll hold onto more water and need watering less often. Not only are potted plants great for providing food for insects, but they can be shelter for other creatures too--there’s been a good few times I’ve moved a pot and found a frog or toad living underneath it.
Tumblr media
If you don’t have room for pots on the ground, you could consider using hanging pots or window boxes! These can be great and easily-maintained options to provide food and habitat for insects and birds in an urban living situation like apartments or townhouses, but they can also be a fun way to add even more habitat to an already-robust home garden. You can even make an entire mini habitat in a window box or pot! I can personally say I’ve seen tons of pollinators visit my yearly hanging basket garden that consists of about five to seven plants, and I’ve always loved the idea of having a window box for blooms right out my window. Just make sure that it’s safe--make sure they’re securely fixed, and that whatever they’re hanging from can handle their weight when they’re freshly watered and loaded with plants.
Tumblr media
If you want to start indoors, you don’t necessarily need grow lights or heat mats (though it will make things a bit easier.) I’ve successfully grown milkweed, peppers, tomatoes, zucchinis, and even sprouted lemon seeds in college dorm rooms, and kept tomato and pepper plants in a dorm room on a sunny windowsill. For the most part, you need a nice and sunny window, some kind of container, and a source of heat (in my case, I used anything from a space heater to the warmth of my laptop running nearby. If you don’t have any sunny windows, or enough windowsill space to start plants on, its possible to obtain cheaper grow lights. One year, my mom bought me some gooseneck grow lights that could clip onto things for cheap off of Amazon. (Fair warning, though, they did light up my entire room in purple. I lived alone that year (covid year, my roomies bailed), so it was fine, but it was kind of trippy,)
Tumblr media
Another year, when I was in an apartment on my own, I bought a grow light modeled like a normal light bulb from the lightbulb aisle in Lowe’s and put it in my desk lamp. Growing seeds indoors can make them grow fast and leggy, so it’ll help if you can keep a desk fan on them so they focus on growing strong instead of tall and fast.
If you’re fortunate enough to have a friend with a nice set up, you could see if they’re willing to let you borrow some of their space to start your own plants as well! My set-up in college was by no means High Class, but I was still more than willing to start seeds for my friends who asked!
Containers for Seed Starting
So now that we’ve talked starting seeds indoors and out, we need to address what to start them in. It’s important that whatever you’re using has drainage holes, and be large enough to support your plant (starting something like milkweed or a squash in a tiny little pot won’t yield great results). Fortunately, there are options here!
If you’re looking to buy pots, Dollar Tree will sell some small plastic pots for cheap in the spring! They’re kind of thin, and won’t last forever, but they’re great for a few uses and don’t cost a lot of money. Something that’s a bit more pricey but are longer-lasting, in my experience, are the Burpee SuperSeed trays. They come in different sizes, but I’m fond of the 16-cell trays--they have silicone bottoms and are made of a nice solid plastic with a tray to hold water, so they hold up for a long time and are easy to clean and reuse!
Tumblr media
Burpee seed tray, my beloved.
What’s better than a cheap pot? Free ones, and there’s plenty of options there! I’ve seen people use toilet paper or paper towel rolls as pots by folding the bottoms in and have it work well for them! I think this method would work best if you had some kind of tray to keep them moist, because mine dried out fast last time I tried this method. I’ve also seen people make pots out of newspaper with a few different methods, and the people who use this method love it--apparently, the roots pass through the paper easier and it decomposes faster when buried, so you can just transplant the whole pot and avoid any kind of transplanting shock. If you don’t have any newspaper on hand, you can likely ask your friends or neighbors!
Tumblr media
I’ve gotten lots of mileage from reusing old containers by poking a few holes in the bottom with knives or scissors--just be careful while you’re doing it! I, personally, am more likely to use an already-used solo cup for it--they’re a nice size, so they hold a good amount of soil and moisture and give the seedling a good amount of root space. I tend to write the plant information on the side of the cup in sharpie marker, or on an index card in pen. I’ve also heard of people making use of egg cartons, fruit containers, yogurt cups, milk cartons, soda bottles--the more you start thinking about what you could easily poke a hole in, the more options start coming around!
Tumblr media
This photo may be from 2018, but I'll still regularly reuse cups like this! They're also great for cuttings!
As you start planning to move your seedlings into the ground and preparing planting sites, you’ll likely need a few tools to do it! How do you get these? You may be able to borrow some tools from a neighbor! As long as you make sure to return them in good condition, depending on how friendly your neighbors are, they might be totally fine with you borrowing their tools for awhile. If you don’t want to take that route, there may be a tool library you can borrow from, or a mutual aid group that can loan you tools for awhile. Either way, borrowing tools is cheaper than buying them--though, if you do have to buy tools, cheap hand-tools from Walmart or the dollar store work just fine. They’ll even last a good while if they’re taken care of when not in use! I've even seen places like Ross sell some tools and pots in spring!
Tumblr media
Spotted in a Walmart gardening section by the registers, 2023.
Of course, your mileage may vary with these. I genuinely cannot think of the last time my house got a newspaper, and as I've mentioned I don't have to worry about snow. Similarly, maybe you don't use plastic cups when you can help it, or don't have a particular affinity for eggs and yogurt. Maybe there isn't a tool library in your area--I sure don't know if there is in mine--but it could still be worth poking around and asking a neighbor!
That's the end of this post! My next post is gonna be about ways to support your plants for cheap--we're gonna be talking compost, mulch, and trellises. Until then, I hope this advice was helpful! Feel free to reply with any questions, your success stories, or anything you think I may have forgotten to add in!

Our 2024 Garden: solarizing
First, thank you for the kind words I received after my last post yesterday. I’m happy to say I did actually get sleep, and am in much less pain today. I’m going to take it easy for a day or two, so I don’t have a relapse, but I did take the last step in preparing the bed I’ve been working on. I got a couple of hoses set up to give it a soak and grabbed the first nozzle I found. It promptly…

# project: edens garden trio showing love ! !
Tumblr media Tumblr media
characters: damon maitsu, kai monteago & wolfgang akire. (features diana, cassidy + grace as side characters.)
prompt: how they would show you affection headcanons + a little bonus drabble. warnings: feminine reader (no pronouns used.) cursing, mainly just fluff with soft damon + a little bit of flirting in kai / damons.
authors note: asjfkeh literally ive been having damon brainrot all week!! hes so bbg so i thought id write for him + the other edens garden pretty boys. eventually.. ill write for other characters but here are my main three for now! i sincerely hope you enjoy my minimum effort writing. written by 🎈 hehe :]
# damon maitsu
i feel like damon would find it embarrassing to show any sort of affection to literally anyone, so he’d show it to you by doing small things; giving you gifts or doing small yet thoughtful gestures towards you. he doesn’t entirely hate saying it, trust me he does love you, but he feels like it’s a stab in his ego ykyk?
the two of you would be sitting beside eachother with the group of ultimates. damon was comfortably seated in silence while you were engaging in a somewhat interesting conversation with kai and grace. as the conversation continued and things got louder, the feeling of warm fingers gently lifting your hand and slowly beginning to trace your veins made your body tingle, your face burning up. you were struggling to hold focus on the conversation, trying to cover your flustered face at the small gesture damon made.  the action was noticed by him, and he  leaned closer. “mm. your hands are so cold, y/n,” he chimed with a delicate soft tone—whether to not be heard by the others, or to make your heart beat ten times faster, who knew.
# kai monteago
okok im pretty certain that kai would def be really touchy and flirty to show affection. whether its to genuinely show that he appreciates you, or to just get a reaction. i think he likes embarrassing you. i feel like he would be silly like that.
a warm day on the beach; sunlight peering down on you, burning into your body as you spoke with your classmates was just what you needed. diana had messaged you two days prior about the upcoming good weather and wanted to take advantage by taking a trip to the beach. so there you were, sitting in a beach chair, accompanied by cassidy, diana and grace. the two more feisty girls were arguing about their skills at volleyball— a game commonly played at the beach, while diana was simply smiling.
“hey.” cassidy turned to you with a glare of annoyance. “you think im better, right?”
you smiled nervously. before you could answer, you felt arms roughly wrap around your body.
“babeee?!” your boyfriend’s voice called from behind you excitedly. “hey, hey! why won’t you come in the water with me?” he whined softly, shaking you. turning your head, you let out a quiet laugh. “ah.” pausing, you placed your hand on his head and messed with his hair for a few seconds, which seemed to make him somewhat pleased, since his face lit up with a smile. “i already went in with you earlier, kai. plus, you were with damon.”
he simply frowned and nodded. “but you look so pretty.” he placed a kiss on your cheek, his eyes holding a delighted look. a grin crossed his face.
grace interrupted and stood up, not being able to watch anymore. “god, get a room, fucking lovebirds!” she snapped, slamming her hands onto the table aggressively.
“you’re just mad nobody wants you because you aren’t as pretty as y/n,” kai murmured under his breath, although grace definitely heard it, and she wasn’t having it.
# wolfgang akire
wolfgang is pretty tame with how he expresses his feelings for you. he keeps it pretty casual and handles you gently. whenever he's with you, he won’t ignore others, but he’ll definitely direct a larger amount of his attention towards you.
wolfgang was sitting with you, fingers intertwined with yours. he was smiling and exchanging words with grace and diana. the three were talking about a show they had recently watched—chainsaw man—though the conversation quickly steered off-topic and the girls walked off. wolfgang let out a quiet sigh, and leaned back. he brought his other hand up to your head, which was resting on his shoulder.
he gently ran his hands through your hair and began talking to you, quietly rambling on about a recent case he had enjoyed in court, although you weren’t listening anymore. you had passed out some time ago before the girls left.
