Pat Gardiner and Walter Blythe are both frogs' family saviours!!!!
"Besides, she was "out" with Sid over his frog. Pat was always so sorry for imprisoned things and Sid had had that poor frog in a pail in the yard for a week. Every time Pat looked at it it seemed to look at her appealingly. Perhaps it had a father or mother or husband or wife in the pool. Or even just a dear friend to whom it longed to be reunited. So Pat carried it away to the Field of the Pool and Sid hadn't spoken to her for two days."
Pat of Silver Bush L. M. Montgomery
"Still less did she approve of two toads Walter brought in and put in the cellar. She put one of them out when evening came but could not find the other and Walter lay awake and worried.
"Maybe they were husband and wife," he thought. "Maybe they're awful lonely and unhappy now they're separated. It was the little one Susan put out, so I guess she was the lady toad and maybe she's frightened to death all alone in that big yard without anyone to protect her...just like a widow."
Anne of Ingleside by L. M. Montgomery

Túngara Frog: Native to Central and South America, these frogs lay eggs in a foamy mass to keep them moist during dry spells. This foam has been investigated for use in topical drug delivery as a cream and biofuel production. Their mating calls are in two parts with females more attracted to calls including the latter part than those who don’t, although they frequently modify it: one of their predators, the fringe-lipped bat, is attracted by this part of the call. They use this call modification in developed areas as well, where urban-dwelling males will make their calls more conspicuous than their counterparts in rural and wild areas.
Gardiner's Seychelles Frog: These frogs range from 9.3-12.5 mm in length, with females being slightly longer than males, which places them as the fourth smallest known frog species in the world. They’re found primarily on the islands of Mahé and Silhouette in the Seychelles islands. The populations are indistinguishable except for minor differences in colouration. They lay 8-16 eggs on the ground which will hatch directly into froglets. Although they lack a middle ear cavity, they can still hear by amplifying sound with their mouth cavity until it transmits to the inner ear.

Movement Project Conclusion:
I explored movement through my own movements through life by observing my bag.
I started off this project with originally basing my ideas off of my electives: Animation, Sculpture and Painting. I decided to make a Zoetrope with frogs, make a cog sculpture of a frog and paint a frog.
I quickly realised this wasn't what this project was for.
So I started over, and I decided to look closer at myself. What do I need for my daily movements? As an avid outdoors man, a college student, and also a child of divorced parents, I found that I am constantly moving from one location to the next with my home on my back. I rarely settle into one place for very long and I keep my home in my bag.
My bag follows me around with all of my movements, I wouldn't be able to go anywhere without my bag.
For Sculpture I decided to make a bag and also build a little house to go inside it. The house looks like my dad's house, where I spend most of my time. I made it from cardboard and gumstrip. If I were to do this project again I would try and make the bag straps out of a more dynamic material so I could comfortably wear the bag.
For animation, I started by making a short film following my friends around town and observing how their bags were always a silent companion, as college students. Then I wanted to make an animation of a bag following a couple on a camping trip to reflect how I use my bag when I'm hiking or hunting or camping. I was incredibly happy with the final product of the animation. Paul Gardiner was a huge help in developing my animation, giving me critiques on how to improve it, mostly the lighting. After incorporating his advice, the animation really came together.
Finally, painting. For painting, I decided to do a series of paintings with the backpack being the focus. I used the photos and videos I took of my friends in town as references. Sylvia taught me how to use colours and tones to improve my paintings. I am not a painter, so this one was a huge struggle for me, but Sylvia was vital in teaching me techniques and giving me a lot of advice and encouragement.
In conclusion, this project was incredibly shaping for me in furthering my skills and developing new techniques in certain mediums that I am uncomfortable in. I stepped out of my comfort zone and allowed myself to go with the flow of my creativity and designs.

2023 - End of year favourite films, books, games & albums
As is an annual tradition for me, I like to share with you all my favourite media consumed and books read during the past year. Though I never include TV Shows and am not sure why, maybe next year!
Normally I make a separate post for everything, but today decided to lump them together - it's more for my own reflection that anything else. I've struggled to name 10 favourite books and felt it was a bit of a weak year film wise... Game wise I mostly played just 2 games. Music is where I struggled. It's been an odd year, a great year with some amazing trips - New Zealand (and Singapore), Budapest and Ireland. Some wonderful comedy highlights, a few comedy lows, a new internal job and many other ups and downs. It's probably why there were gaps in my reading and not so many games played.
Not all of the following were realised this year, some were late 2022 and some even earlier than that, but I just got to them this year.
Favourite 10 Films (by no means are some of these the best!)
Barbie - Greta Gerwig
Oppenheimer - Christopher Nolan
65 - Scott Beck & Bryan Woods
Napoleon - Ridley Scott
Saltburn - Emerald Fennell
No one will save you - Brian Duffield
Barbarian - Zach Gregger
Guardian's of the Galaxy Vol 3 - James Gun
Talk to Me - Danny & Michael Philippou
John Wick Chapter 4 - Chad Stahelski
Cousins - Ainsley Gardiner and Briar Grace-Smith (Okay this is number 11, I couldn't leave it off!)
Favourite 10 Books of the year
The Mad Women's Ball - Victoria Mas
MilkFed - Melissa Broder
Journey to the Centre of the Earth - Jules Verne
Grief is the thing with feathers - Max Porter
Life Ceremony - Sayaka Murata
Garth Merenghi's Terrortome
Songs of a Dead Dreamer & Grimscribe - Thomas Ligotti
Lapvona - Ottessa Moshfegh
Gyo - Junji Ito
The final girl support group - Grady Hendrix
Favourite 10 Albums of the year
Sleep Token - Take me back to eden
Lana Del Rey - Did you know there's a tunnel under ocean boulevard
Father John Misty - I love you, Honeybear
Sparks - The Girl is crying in her latte
IAMX - Fault Lines
Avenged Sevenfold - Life is but a dream
Myrkur - Ragnarok
Electric Callboy - TEKKNO (tour ed)
Creeper - Sanguivore
Honourable mention to Gabrielle Aplin - Phosphorescent, two of the songs on the album (Skylight & Mariana Trench) are songs I've had on repeat and absolutely love. I enjoy the rest of the album, just not quite to fit into my top 10. Blink 182 - One More Time is another that was very close, I just haven't listened to it quite enough yet.
Song wise an honourable mention to 'Calm Down' - Rema & Solidarity - Gogol Bordello
Favourite 5 Games of the year
Bramble: The Mountain King - Hand's down, my favourite game of the year.
Persona 5
Fallout 4 - Yes, I finally started playing this again and am nearly at the end of the main story. I did play a few hours of Starfield, but wanted to wait until I'd finished this first.
Frog Detective - I loved this game so much.
Night at the Woods - This is me cheating, I've played it through twice before...it's been on a list in a previous year too. I just haven't played much new stuff this year.
I got Harvest Moon: Winds of Athos & Detective Pikachu Returns for Christmas, I also bought myself the AC: Valhalla DLC's - it is likely all three will be on my list next year.

#439: frogs have eardrums called tympanums on their outside, just behind their eye. it functions just like ours but instead of having an external funnel to channel the sound, its just really big :P generally you can also tell a frogs gender by its tympanum - females have smaller tympanums and vice versa. if the eardrum pops, it can fully grow back!
the Gardiner's Seychelles Frog (smaller than Mini ature!) is capable of listening even without a tympanic membrane - its reckoned that it listens through its mouth!! speaking of frog mouths, they only have teeth in the top jaw.

today's funky frog of the day: the gardiner's frog (Sechellophryne gardineri)! this absolutely miniscule friend is one of the smallest frogs in the world, and is up to 11 mm long. this makes them the third smallest frog in the world! they're endemic to the seychelles. fun fact: this frog has no middle ear cavity- they use their mouth cavity to transmit sound to the inner ear!

Macbeth Witches’ Speech Tag Game
(Bookoween: Toil and Trouble)
Tagged by @readingbooksinisrael. Thank you! This is clever!
1. “Thrice the brinded cat hath mew'd.” Recommend a book with a cat in it
A Civil Campaign by Lois McMaster Bujold has an entire litter of kittens in it, and they very delightfully add to the general chaos.
2. “Harpier cries 'Tis time, 'tis time.” What is the next book you plan to read?
I don’t know what I’m going to read after Hench, my commuting book, but once I’m done The Changeling, my home book is going to be The Complete Nonsense of Edmund Lear.
3. “Round about the cauldron go” Recommend a book it took you a long time to read
Heart of Europe by Peter Wilson took me nearly three months, because I had to keep putting it down to read other things and give my brain a break. Book is fantastic and hugely informative, but also dense.
4. “Eye of newt and toe of frog” Recommend a book from your childhood OR recommend a gross book
Can I recommend Top Secret by John Reynolds Gardiner, which is both? It’s weird in the way only older middle grade can be, about a kid who’s desperate to win the science fair, tries to come up with a way to get humans to photosynthesize, and turns himself into a plant in the process—largely by chugging liver smoothies.
5. “Make the gruel thick and slab” Recommend a book over 400 pages
Passage by Connie Willis, because I haven’t recommended any spooky/horror books in this yet and I feel I should fix that. It’s about a scientist trying to discover what causes near-death experiences, and when she can’t get reliable data, starts inducing them in herself. And every time she “dies” she winds up on the Titanic….
+
6. “Double, double toil and trouble/Fire burn and caludron bubble” Recommend any book you like
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë because Jane is an absolute (quiet) badass, it’s so much more than pop culture would have you believe, and it’s got some nice gothic spookiness to it too.

A distance runner’s Covid-19 lament
It's been a long time between blogs. For my faithful followers (thanks Mum), my alphabetical parkrun project came to an abrupt halt in mid March with the first lockdown in Melbourne. I was left frustratingly short of my goal, with just letters W, Y and Z remaining (there are no parkruns beginning with X). As a result, there hasn't been much to write about since my last blog in August.
The current stage 4 lockdown in Melbourne prohibits travel beyond a 5 kilometre radius of your home, with a few specific excemptions. This has cramped the style of many runners. It has been a necessary and acceptable restriction, but maybe now it's time to relax it.
Im a parkrun tourist at heart To travel 6k would be a nice start I feel so restricted and that is my beef It’s not as if I want to go to Tenerife (17,996k)
Maybe I’ll wait until after dark And sneak on over to Albert Park (8k) It would be a clear Covid breach To go running at Altona Beach (25k)
If only I could sprout some wings And fly on out to Berwick Springs (57k) And if Dan would give me a break I’d do two laps round Lillydale Lake (38k)
Would it be a mortal sin To jog the path at Darebin? (9k) Why can’t I make like Deek And do a long run at Diamond Creek? (25k)
If I could get to Frog Hollow (48k) A quick 5k would inevitably follow And the leafy trails at Gardiners Creek (20k) Would help me reach my post-cancer peak
I know it is out of my hands To be allowed to run at Highlands (33k) But as long as nobody tells Maybe I can get as far as Jells (22k)
Would it be such a bad look If I drove 19 k’s to Karkarook? And if I went to Wyndham Vale (38k) Would the Corona cops put me in jail?
Although I’ve not been to Point Cook (31k) I would dearly love to take a look And I’d like to see what the course holds Up and down the hills at Westerfolds (16k)
Warringal Parklands seem at my front door But the map says it’s 10k or more I’m even having hunger pangs To run around the You Yangs (60k)
This thing has gone on way too long I’m really missing Maribyrnong (10k) I’m only asking, for heaven’s sakes For a chance to run at Newport Lakes (18k)
So please please please help us Dan You have power to lift the ban This 5k limit is such a bummer For every long-suffering (park)runner

I was tagged by @geekymoviemom - thank you, dear :)
Name four fictional characters that showcase your personality the best, with explanations if you want.
Well.
Emily Byrd Starr and Pat Gardiner. I’m definitely NOT the “whistle and I will come, boy” girl, just like Emily wasn’t. I ignored peer pressure about many societal norms, including dating, until it fit MY plans. And I’m very much a person to stick with what I know and love, like Pat. Any kind of renovation, move, grand throwing out is painful, and changes to the houses of my childhood hurt me the most. I can still visualise in detail all the rooms in our country cottage - as they were 20 years ago.
Samantha Carter. I’m a woman in a male-dominated field, I have to prove on a daily basis that I’m just as valid as the blokes. And I DID in fact arm-wrestle my male classmates in primary school. Beat some of them, too. I also used to go on hermetic rants like she does ;) Talking the ears off anyone who was willing to listen (no matter how dense).
There is one character that comes from a Polish series of books Jezycjada, called Celestyna Zak. She was the first girl I’ve read about that was JUST ME. Low self-esteem, bad opinion about her own looks, bookish, supportive of less-than-bookish friend, falling hopelessly in love with a classmate that does not notice her - it all matched with me at 13/14. Even today, any time I do one of these “which character from Jezycjada are you”, I get Celestyna.
Chihiro. I am that person cringing at the entrance into a strange place, never sure if I'm allowed to be there.
Aesthetic
Option 1: Dark and gloomy. Nerdy t-shirts with Doctor Who, Star Wars, anime and game references, or geeky quotes. Baggy black trousers. Heavy hiking boots.
Option 2: Paradise bird. Fuschia or yellow shirts, turquoise trousers, sport sandals, polymer clay jewellery.
Favourite musical/ play. (If you’ve never seen a musical or play, one you’d be interested in seeing?)
“Finnian’s Rainbow” for movies, “Grafin Mariza” for scene plays.
What is the best compliment you’ve ever received?
"You are more competent than you think you are.”
Embarrassing story or fact about yourself that makes you laugh now?
I was one of the kids who told whatever they thought, and repeated what grownups said between themselves. My mom still can’t forget several of these cases
Favourite Disney or Pixar Movie?
Hard to pick, but Princess and the Frog, then Tangled, then Moana.
Favourite flower or plant?
Morning glory. And basil.
What’s your favourite holiday?
Of ones I do observe, the whole Midwinter set. Of ones I do not, Purim ;)
Name three things that made you laugh or smile this week.
Jokes my son tried to tell.
Talking with my friends on Zoom.
Comments on my fics ;)
What song would you play to introduce yourself to someone?
Andante, by ABBA.
Name something that truly makes you feel peaceful even at your most stressed moments.
Crafts. Busy hands, take my brain off the stressful things.
What do you, did you, or would you study in college?
MSc in Computer Science.
This is kind of a weird one, but which outfit of yours makes you feel most like yourself?
Loose black t-shirts, striped socks, loose black trousers.
What is a quote you live by.
I don’t have a particular one quote for all aspects of my life, but I do try to aim for this, when writing:
Write in such a way that a beggar
Thinks it’s money
And ones that are dying
That it’s birthday
(Ewa Lipska, “Credo”, translation my own)
Name the funniest playlist name you have.
I name my playlists in a reasonable and useful way, I’m afraid.
Make a reference to an inside joke you have with someone you love with zero context.
"For meat, but for poppy seeds.”
What is a message you would give your younger self if given the chance?
Switch schools sooner. Don’t fall for the tall tales about great business opportunities. Try doing double major, you have the capacity.
Who is your favourite family member? (If you have no good blood family members, feel free to mention someone in your found family).
My husband and son, but then my oldest niece.
What’s a secret dream of yours?
I don’t have very secret dreams. One day, I want to publish an actual book, one that will be so new, people will be surprised it was little old me that wrote it.

Tiny Worlds
On today’s video chat we had a class briefing exerecise where we asked to gather around our home some of the things we plan on photographing and discuss our area of choice to shoot.
Some of the things I am going to talk about is some of the research that I have done in the past while being off at the moment.
The one that I am going to begin with is the looking for light document I made recently on Jack Davidson This photographer arranged all of his shots with using light and and placing small objects in different areas of light to create the correct shot he was after.
When placing his subject he liked to make a story from start to finish in his photographs.
That is something that I thought was really useful when learning from his work and is also something that I am going to try to take into account when making my own shots and work in this brief.
At the moment I am still thinking of location as I am limited to being indoors but it may probably be shot outside in my garden or else in the garage.I know most of the things that will be needed fortunately I have most of the equipment needed and also macro lens which will be useful in this project.
I had a look at a document on how these sort of tiny worlds photos are took it was done by a photographer named Marie Gardiner the first thing he said was you must think about what you will need so I am going to have my camera charged and lenses available fortunately I have sigma macro lens but will keep my 50 mm on side in case anything goes wrong. The settings that will be used so if am using a fast shutter I think something like 1/200 or faster and iso between 100 to 400 I will play about and see what works best I found these settings out after the class chat which I hope is going to help.
When thinking about a well lit enviroment I thought the garden of mine would be the best of choice as it will help to create composition as we are all stuck indoors at the moment. I have added 2 images of Marie’s below the first one is a close up shot of a frog and the second one is another close up of a small flying insect fly.
After the document is done I am going to have a think about what else could be needed and what else could help to create a suitable shot similar to the ones I have spoke about.
