Ryu Number: Don Adams
Don Adams was an American actor, best known for his role as the incredibly skilled yet incredibly clumsy secret agent Maxwell Smart in the secret agent spoof sitcom Get Smart. If you don't recognize the title—which, fair enough, it aired literally sixty years ago—he also notably voiced the dimwitted cyborg police officer protagonist of the Inspector Gadget cartoons.
He has a Ryu Number of at most 4.
Tumblr media
The last portion of Space Quest V: Roger Wilco – The Next Mutation features our titular protagonist infiltrating the SCS Goliath, making use of its cramped, labyrinthine maintenance tunnels.
Tumblr media
Apparently someone in development thought the passageways a bit reminiscent, video-game-wise: Take the right wrong path, and Roger will speedily crawl in the other direction with an unexpected cameo on his tail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Space Quest 6: Roger Wilco in the Spinal Frontier is fully voiced, including—as you may know already because @ryunumber—noted disc jockey, announcer, and voice actor Gary Owens. Normally this wouldn't be enough to count the actor themselves, even if they are credited in the game—but persist past the end credits and fade-out and you'll hear the narrator thank you for playing Space Quest 6 before extroducing himself specifically as "Gary Owens, signing off." Totally counts!
Finally, guess who got himself a copy of TV Land Presents Blast From the Past?
Tumblr media
Mind, it's such a jalopy of a game I couldn't get it to run on my computer without serious graphical issues...
Tumblr media
... but I was able to get it to run just runnily enough to confirm its nature! If you ever wanted to play a game where TV stars of a bygone era ask you trivia questions about the shows they were on... then you're not exactly choked with options, are you?
Gary Owens pulls double-duty here, playing both quiz host and TV star questionmonger, his questions focusing on the sketch comedy show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In (where he was the on-screen announcer).
Tumblr media
Don Adams' questions, of course, have to do with Get Smart. Unfortunately, I couldn't get any clean, non-glitched-out footage of him from my recordings, so have this video I extracted from the game files instead.
You know what? There's a charm to it.

ok, so more no-Furnace!au hcs for the Skull boys
So they're still shitheads, just a little less so (pretend this is a universe that actually gave a fuck about delinquent teens/preteens and cares more about helping them than throwing them in prison). The gangs are still a thing, but violence is rarer and usually involves fistfighting and not knives or guns.
Bodie and Kevin constantly annoy each other. They're assholes, they're best friends, they'd strangle each other given the opportunity, they split lunches.
Gary and Bodie have a quieter dynamic. They don't talk as much but Gary doesn't smoke when he's around Bodie and Bodie balances out Kevin and Gary's short tempers as the one who's just a little more patient.
Kevin and Gary fight non-stop. They're problem children and they know it. Will put aside their differences if faced with a mutual dislike/threat or in the rare moments that both of them are in a good mood.
Ambrose is stuck trying to lead the gang and balance between the fact that they're typically fighting and breaking the law with the fact that they're a) trying to be a little better about it and b) kids, typically from not great homes. Despite the fact that Kevin is his lieutenant publicly, the gang has a more complex hierarchy and Ambrose pays attention to all of them.
Pete is technically still in the gang, but not really. He only comes out to help them if there's a real problem and most of his work is just scaring off rival wannabe gangs from picking on people in what is traditionally Skull turf. Call it his community service, but the bullying rate has decreased by quite a bit since he's started doing this.
Ambrose and Gary have a weird dynamic. They both would rather the other be gone, they both know the other one doesn't have any great alternatives, and honestly, neither of them can afford to lose the gang. They're the only people that make Ambrose keep his violent tendencies in check long-term and can at least direct Gary's bloodlust onto targets that won't get him arrested. Privately, Ambrose hopes Gary's father gets taken out of the picture soon and maybe that'll get Gary under control a little bit.
Adam has gotten out of crime shit and stayed out of crime shit, but he'll do Ambrose minor favors in emergency situations. This means mostly things like playing lookout for cops when there's an inter-gang brawl and helping steer some of the stray kids to the Skulls so they can either join up (and have their violence directed away from the civilian population) or be scared straight.
At the end of the day, at least some of the Skulls are damn well aware that this lifestyle isn't sustainable. They start turning away younger kids, sending them back to Adam and Oli and anyone else they can think of that'll help keep the kids away from crime as much as possible. This is half-compassion and half-knowing that the kids won't be able to handle their own in bloodbaths. One of the hardest questions that weights on the minds of guys like Bodie and Pete is whether or not they have the option to re-integrate into society one way or another, if it's not too late for them.

The Return of Starbuck (the one saving grace for the entire series)
Tumblr media
[All images are owned by Glen A. Larson Productions. Please don’t sue me]
You can always tell when a spinoff is desperate to win over the fans of the original series when members of the original cast start guest-starring. Just sayin’
As I previously mentioned, Galactica 1980 was not what fans signed up for, so it’s only fitting that the final episode before the series got the axe was such an act of desperation.
If you would like to watch this episode, it’s available on Internet Archive.
Tumblr media
We open with Dr. Zee waking Adama about a dream he had (you mean dream interpretation isn’t one of the 23,756 skills Dr. Zee has mastered?) When Adama presses, Dr. Zee says his dream informed him he wasn’t born in the Colonial fleet (not a total shock. The fleet encountered a number of human settlements in the original series; I’m shocked Adama didn’t decide to say “close enough” and call any of them Earth)
When Adama confirms this fact, Dr. Zee continues that his dream was about a Colonial Warrior named Starbuck. Suddenly, Adama is very interested in Dr. Zee’s dream and we go into flashback mode...
Tumblr media
...to a dogfight between a Cylon patrol and Starbuck and then-Lieutenant Boomer. Starbuck’s Viper is damaged in the battle and he tells Boomer to return to the fleet while he looks for a place to set down. Boomer promises to go back for him once he warns the fleet about the Cylons.
Tumblr media
Back at the fleet, it’s business as usual as the Galactica fights off yet another Cylon attack. However, things are not going well...
Tumblr media
...as Adama orders the fleet to retreat, leaving Starbuck behind. It’s obvious this is a different set than the Galactica bridge in the original series. Also, it’s obvious this bit was filmed before the intended mid-season break in order to give Lorne Green time to grow his beard back.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Starbuck has crash-landed on a rather inhospitable planet (but at least he’s alive...for now) that he names after himself (because of course he does) He sets out to find some means to sustain himself, and maybe find someone else. We are treated to a montage of Starbuck walking all over Planet Starbuck and finding nothing.
[Quick note: there’s almost no dialogue during most of this portion of the episode. What we get instead is Starbuck narrating his slow descent into despair and madness in his usual wisecracking way]
Eventually, he discovers...
Tumblr media
...one of the Raiders he and Boomer shot down. Readying his pistol, he slowly advances...
Tumblr media
...and discovers all three pilots have ceased functioning. Ever the pragmatic type, Starbuck scavenges the Raider to build a shelter as the temperature rapidly drops as the suns set.
youtube
(Thanks to mdmatteo)
Having survived the night...
Tumblr media
...Starbuck continues his descent into madness by talking with the Cylons as if they could hear him.
Tumblr media
On the third day, Starbuck decides to try to make friends with the Cylons...or rather, make the Cylons his friends...well, at least repair them and hope they don’t kill him when they reactivate.
Only it doesn’t work. The Centurion Starbuck repaired doesn’t reactivate.
Tumblr media
...or does it? Starbuck hears the Cylon’s eye dart back and forth as it draws its weapon on Starbuck.
Tumblr media
...but doesn’t seem too worried. I guess Death by Frankenstein isn’t the worst way to commit suicide. Fortunately for Starbuck, he made sure the Cylon’s weapon was deactivated.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, the Cylon decides he can kill the human with its bare hands. Fortunately, the Cylon is still hooked up to his Raider’s reactor for power and Starbuck can cut the power at any time. Unfortunately, the Cylon can’t get past the fact that it’s at war with the humans. Fortunately, when Starbuck tells it that he repaired it, it’s willing to parley.
[I would like to note that the Cylon’s voice changes in this scene (no doubt due to Starbuck not knowing exactly what he was doing) from a typical Cylon modulated voice to that of legendary announcer Gary Owens]
Starbuck has a philosophical discussion with the Cylon (that he names “Cy”, because why not?) about the nature of the War, the Cylon Empire, and (most importantly) their survival.
[I would once again like to note that the dialogue between the Cylon and Starbuck throughout the episode is hilarious and is easily why it stands out. Unfortunately there isn’t a single clip of it on YouTube, so you’ll have to take my word for it, or watch it for yourself]
Tumblr media
Eventually, Cy agrees to a truce while they teach each other about their respective races. Over the next two weeks, Cy realizes that what Starbuck needs is a female...
Tumblr media
...so he finds one (HOW?!) What’s more, she’s pregnant! (HOW?! Well, I know how, but...)
When Cy finds out the woman is pregnant, he says “I am rapidly being surrounded!” (The fact that it’s Gary Owens’ voice is even funnier than Baltar being advised by the voice of Jonathan Harris)
After a week of Starbuck carrying a one-sided conversation with the new arrival, she finally speaks...
“Starbuck...would you die for me?”
Tumblr media
Yeah, that’s a hell of an opening line!
Now that the woman has shown she can talk, Starbuck has questions of his own. It turns out the woman (named Angela) is from another dimension, but when pressed for details, she walks out into the cold.
Tumblr media
Angela tells Starbuck they need to prepare a ship for their child (wait, what? I mean, I know Starbuck slept with half of the Colonial fleet, but...Oh, she meant that in the “spiritual” sense...whatever that means) before the Cylons arrive looking for their crashed Raider.
The next morning, Starbuck has come up with a plan for a crude ship scavenging parts from his Viper and the Raider, but is curious where they’ll go since the Colonial fleet is long gone. Angela is being terribly vague, but urgent that the ship be built.
Eventually, Cy and Starbuck build...
Tumblr media
...well, it’s something...
At that moment, Angela’s water breaks (better save that; water’s scarce on Planet Starbuck!)
Tumblr media
Three guesses who the baby grows up to be.
Angela informs Starbuck that the Cylons will arrive tomorrow (how the hell does she know that?) Starbuck’s inner monologue assures him that Angela’s just emotionally drained and it will be better in the morning.
In the morning...
Tumblr media
Uh-oh!
Starbuck rushes back to the shelter to warn Angela and get her to the ship, but Cy has decided to return to his people (will they accept a Cylon who sounds like Gary Owens?) Once at the ship, Starbuck loads Angela and Baby Zee aboard and starts the launch sequence as he leaves to greet his guests.
As Starbuck prepares for his last stand...
Tumblr media
...Cy decides he wants to be Starbuck’s friend after all! Of course, once the initial shock wears off, the Cylons return fire, hitting Cy. Starbuck finishes off the Cylons and goes to check on Cy.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Cy is too damaged and goes to the Great Scrap Heap in the Sky, leaving Starbuck alone again (unless he wants to try repairing another Cylon from the Raider. Maybe the next one will sound like Casey Kasem)
In the distance...
Tumblr media
...Angela appears and says she’s ready to return to her own dimension (so she could do that at any time? What the hell, lady?!)
Eventually the ship carrying Baby Zee is found by the Galactica.
Tumblr media
...which catches us up to the present.
A nice sendoff for Starbuck...
Tumblr media
...but his story doesn’t end there. After all, he was recruited by a crack commando unit who was imprisoned for a crime they didn’t commit.
Tumblr media
...and is apparently still hunted by the Cylons.
