The pipeline would run underground. Even still, the proposed path is a real risk to threatened species and ecological communities, due to the need to clear a 30m-wide corridor to install the pipeline.
In January, the NSW government granted Santos authority to survey land along the route, with or without permission from landholders. This brings this massive infrastructure project closer to construction.
Many landscapes along the pipeline's path are already denuded of native vegetation. The threatened ecosystems that remain, including native grasslands, must be protected.

⛽⛴️ 🏭 🚨 MORE THAN 70'000KM OF NEW GAS PIPELINE UNDER CONSTRUCTION GLOBALLY
In excess of 70'000km (43'495mi) of new gas pipeline is being constructed globally at a cost of approximately $194 billion, according to data published by Global Energy Monitor (GEM), a San Francisco-based company in the United States.
The data published points out that 83% of new gas pipeline being built in Asia at a cost of $117.2 billion, with India and China leading the way in new pipeline construction.
New pipeline construction increased by 18% in 2023, with 57'000km being built in Asia, 5'600km under construction in Europe, 4'700km in the Americas, and another 1'800km in Africa.
The top ten builders of new pipelines include China, India, Iran, Russia, Pakistan, the United States, Nigeria, Italy, Argentina and Canada.
In Asia, China is in the process of constructing 30'300km of new gas pipeline in 150 total projects. Russia, meanwhile, is building another 2'900km of pipeline for approximately $8.2 billion.
In Iran, 5'000km of new gas pipeline is under construction for a total cost of roughly $18 billion, while Pakistan is currently building 1'800km of pipeline for an estimated cost of $3.7 billion.
Across the globe, the total length of proposed gas pipelines and pipelines currently in the project phase totals approximately 159'000km.

Joint Expeditionary Force to deploy ships to guard Baltic Sea infrastructure
Ten Nordic countries agreed on Tuesday to boost naval presence in the Baltic Sea to protect critical infrastructure after a gas pipeline leak.
The defence ministers of the 10 countries that make up the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) agreed at the meeting to activate the “JEF response Option”. They said in a joint declaration:
“This includes Maritime and Air capabilities which will deploy across the JEF’s core region as a military contribution to the protection of critical undersea infrastructure. This marks the first time a JEF Response Option has been activated. The activity will take place in early December.”
In October, leaders of the group’s member countries agreed to strengthen measures to protect subsea infrastructure after a leak on a pipeline linking Finland and Estonia was believed to have been caused by “external” activities.
Finnish police believe the anchor of a Chinese vessel damaged the pipeline. Swedish Minister for Defence Pal Jonson told public broadcaster SVT:
“It is about conducting maritime surveillance, some 20 warships will be active in the Baltic Sea but also in parts of the North Atlantic to take into account the security situation and better protect critical underwater infrastructure.”
