Soooo as you can see, there's not much surprise going on. I just love Brian Fallon and basically everything he does music-wise way too much. And every time a Gaslight Anthem song comes on, I will point out how much I love it 🫶🫶🫶

there's a river that winds on forever (memory + ghost)
BOY - Into the Wild / The National - England / Gaslight Anthem - The Navesink Banks / The Cryptonaturalist / Bruce Springsteen - The River / Stanisław Wyspiański - Sketches of an eye // Alfons Mucha - Czech young woman / Basia Bulat - Fables / Against Me! - Two Coffins / Gaslight Anthem - Old Haunts
When Brian Fallon said "Here, in the dark, I cherish the moonlight. I'm in love with the way you're in love with the night; and it travels from heart, to limb, to pen", I felt that in my soul.
Lucero has a lot in common with bands such as the Drive-By Truckers, the North Mississippi Allstars, the Bottle Rockets, the Dropkick Murphys, Gaslight Anthem and the Hold Steady. Most of these musicians started out as punk-rock kids but grew to absorb the musical roots and literary storytelling of Bruce Springsteen. This evolution not only gave them broader influences and larger ambitions than most garage bands but also gave them a more skeptical, less earnest outlook than Springsteen himself. It was something new under the sun.
I have, perhaps, a bad tendency to mentally adjust lyrics to fit a character I am dwelling on, and that goes a but for this. The idea of a beloved place, though, of home turning sour, of no longer being able to dwell and stay there, I feel very much works for Shadow.
It's not that they have no good memories of the ARK, but if they keep trying to reclaim that in some way, if they keep trying to fixate and focus on only that and nothing else... they're going to end up hurting themselves.
I personally don't feel that they really settled their feelings about their past at the end of SHtH05. That to me feels like someone choosing to IGNORE rather than ADDRESS. I would love to see a moment where such an addressing and getting help in some capacity would occur, but ah... looks like that's up to fans to do.
