The green light at the edge of the pier symbolised Gatsby's love for Daisy, an unrealistic and unachievable goal that would lead to tragedy. And yet, the only other person who had seen this "green light" is Nick Carraway, who observed the light when he saw Gatsby at the pier, reaching for the mysterious and beautiful light across the bay. Therefore we can conclude that the green light not only symbolizes Gatsby's love for Daisy, but Nick's love for Gatsby, impossible and unreachable, a light across the pier that fades and is lost forever across the bay.
