Creature Corner: Vermin part 2

Allies
At first glance, it can be hard to see how there can be allies among the vermin creature type, what with it being rooted in classic giant insect horror. Such a trope typically treats the giant bugs as a force that is utterly incapable of being reasoned with, acting purely on the instincts of hunger, territorial defense, and the like.
The simplest way when reading the rules as-written, is having a class, archetype, or feature that allows you to have a vermin companion or familiar. Such pets are certainly more exotic than your average cat or wolf, and they have their own drawbacks and advantages, just as plant companions do.
Some archetypes also grant vermin empathy, letting a nature-themed character bond with vermin creatures in the same way that others do with animals, which can be useful for those times when you encounter one in a dungeon.
However, consider also that there are plenty of societies in Pathfinder that canonically tame and use giant vermin as pets and working beasts, particularly duergar/hryngar and gathlains. The former in particular favoring giant beetles as beasts of burden, while the latter taming giant bees for use as mounts. The fact of the matter is that insects, arachnids, and other vermin have instincts and surprisingly capable brains despite being “mindless”, so with the right understanding of how they process stimuli, they could be trained and signaled with things like pheromone markers and simple food rewards for those with the patience and understanding.
Also consider that the only intelligent vermin in the whole game, the worms that walk, can also be reasoned with, despite normally being wicked beings. Despite their unusual form, they bear the same susceptibility to diplomacy and aligning goals as any powerful but ruthless mage.
That about does it for today. Sadly there wasn’t much to go off of there, but we’ll have plenty to talk about in the exploration of vermin foes tomorrow!
