Vaaranam Aayiram (2008) review

Translation: Thousand Elephants

Well this was a great film to end 2023/start 2024 with.

Before I talk about my personal stuff connected to this film, this is genuinely an amazing film. Barely anyone can compare to Suriya’s amazing double acting in this movie, Simran, Divya Spandana and Sameera Reddy were also great. Harris Jayaraj wrote an AMAZING album to this movie (get more into that later). In general, one of Gautham Vasudev Menon’s best films in my opinion. Only flaw is probably hearing Suriya saying daddy to himself for 2hr 30min straight.

Personally, this movie has been an influence to me my whole life. It was released around the time I was born, and I was a picky eater (still am) so my dad would put me in a high chair and would play songs on his phone which only had ‘Annal Mele Panithuli’ to feed me. When I watched this film, my dad walked in at the start and laughed, saying that he would never forget this movie because of me and how he brought me up with film back then.

Now having watched it, I saw a lot of similarities between Suriya and Krishnan and me and my dad. My mum even admits that my dad spent more time caring for me when I was a baby than herself. If im being honest, I have a greater bond with my dad than my mum. I’m really scared for the future, I’m scared similar events will happen, especially since my dad’s health isn’t the best, but this film brought me strength. As Simran says at the end, “whatever happens, life has to go on”.

I love you dad.

P.s I suggest you listen to this movie’s soundtrack at least, it’s beautiful

Bollywood Movies Part CCVII

Roommates Sid (Dulquer Salmaan) and Kallis (Rakshan) fall for Meera (Ritu Varma) and Shreya (Niranjani Ahathian) respectively. Sid and Kallis are also criminals, using technology to commit crimes such as stripping computers and selling the parts and then returning the computers with inferior components and theft. When DCP Prathap (Gautham Vasudev Menon) starts tracking their crimes, Kallis and Sid decide to go to Goa with Meera and Shreya and their ill gotten gains. However, they discover that Meera and Shreya are con artists after they leave with the boys’ money.

Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal is a fun movie that has romance, betrayal, a chase, and a heist. I don’t have much to say about it except that it was enjoyable and entertained me. Favorite songs are Sirikkalam Parakkalam, Ennai Vittu, and Kanave Nee Naan. None of the songs have subtitles.

When Champak’s (Irrfan Khan) feud with his cousin Gopi (Deepak Dobriyal) over using the family name for their competing sweets shops causes his daughter Tarika (Radhika Madan) to lose her scholarship to a university in England, Champak decides to help her get in no matter what.

Angrezi Medium is a great film about family, especially the relationship between parents and their children. It’s lots of fun and heartwarming. I enjoyed the parallel shown between Champak and Tarika’s relationship  and Naina (Kareena Kapoor Khan) and Mrs. Kohli’s (Dimple Kapadia) relationship. Favorite songs are Ek Zindagi (English subtitles) and Samajh Ni Pavega (no subtitles, stills and audio).

Anupama Bannerji (Sanya Malhotra) decides to sue her mother Shakuntala Devi (Vidya Balan) for selling Anu’s business properties and keeping the profit for herself. During the settlement meetings for the case, Shakuntala’s rise to fame as “The Human Computer” is depicted.

Shakuntala Devi is extremely biased as the creatives only based the movie on Anupama Bannerji’s narrative and did not bother to do anything other than superficial research into the events in the movie. While I enjoyed learning about Shakuntala Devi, I think the film does her a disservice. Favorite song is Rani Hindustani (no subtitles).

Rathnam

 Rathnam is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language romantic action film written and directed by Hari.

 The film stars Vishal in the titular role, alongside Priya Bhavani Shankar, Ramachandra Raju, Samuthirakani, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Yogi Babu. The film marks the third collaboration of Vishal and Hari after Thaamirabharani and Poojai.

The music and background score is composed by Devi Sri Prasad, in his sixth collaboration with Hari after Aaru (2005), Singam (2010), Venghai (2011), Singam II (2013) and Saamy square (2018); maiden with Vishal.

  Rathnam is scheduled to release on April 26 in theatres.

Maybe I'm growing insane bit by bit, I'm glad to be able to see her in such a godly aura at times, also thanking the strands of hair falling off and leading her to slowly tuck it away while looking like an absolutely gorgeous piece of art to my eyes. To Her existence that showed me that and also carved it into me that beauty lies in what people carry inside. Hopefully only manifesting the best of things for her, her everlasting brightest smile to shine on to the people further down her journey and the warmth that her soul carries akin to the gentle embrace of her palms radiating comfort to those around and for her to be the bestest version of herself.
