All those "stop shipping male characters together we need to ALLOW men to BE AFFECTIONATE without being ACCUSED OF BEING GAY" posts have me double-checking that I haven't time-traveled back 10 to 15 fucking years. Who the fuck are you, Joe Russo? Most of the ships in question literally are platonic in canon. There is not a dearth of representation for straight male friendships in real life media. You're recycling the homophobic arguments word-for-word from the years when major fic archives proudly advertised that slash was banned, and you are not progressive for doing so.

Do you have any recommendations of books/ studies/ articles about the representation of queer people in media? Thank you for all the work you do!
Yes absolutely, I would be happy to share. Any discussion like this needs to mention The Celluloid Closet: Homosexuality in the Movies by Vito Russo. Making Queer History does have a set of articles about this as well, with Queen Christina, Queer Codes, and Queer Coding and Different from the Others.
Some more modern books that I can vouch for are:
Tumblr media
The Male Gazed: On Hunks, Heartthrobs, and What Pop Culture Taught Me about (Desiring) Men
Manuel Betancourt
Tumblr media
It Came from the Closet: Queer Reflections on Horror
Joe Vallese
Tumblr media
Gays on Broadway
Ethan Mordden

Hi Honey, I'm Homo!: Sitcoms, Specials, and the Queering of American Culture
Matt Baume

Submission messagefor Merlin and Arthur: merthur (merlin and Arthur from the BBC show merlin
Submission message for Steve and Bucky: Does Stucky count? Steve and Bucky from Captain America
Additional propaganda: I refuse to shut up about this. Merlin is not queerbait!! At no point during the show is there a genuine possibility of Arthur and Merlin to be in a romantic relationship. They are queer coded but they do not create a false impression of their relationship. See Sherlock for good example: they constantly bring it up in the show itself and dangle it in front of the viewers, only to not follow through. The show Merlin does not set them up. There are no offhanded remarks, comments, or jokes that they’re more than friends. There is simply no chance in the show that they will get together. They are queer coded, which is not the same. Coding says: this character displays some traits and characteristics that ___ people may relate to. Baiting says: oh you want these two together? hmm, you wanna see that? wouldn’t that be nifty? what if they talk about it and act like it? aren’t you gonna keep watching to find out if they really do? Then follows up with: SIKE! Wow we got you, of course they’re not together! All of that was meaningless! Let’s please stop confusing these two entirely separate concepts!
Merthur is just gay I don’t have to explain merthur on the merthur site. They’re talking to each other at night and giving each other flowers and shit— things Arthur NEVER does with his canon romantic love interest and if I’m not mistaken I think Arthur like goes to sleep for a hundred years and Merlin is like. Still waiting for him? Let them kiss, damn!
Stucky: "Of course, this is still a rollicking adventure tale and no adventure is complete without a love story.....the longest, most tortured one in Marvel history" - Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (writers of Captain America movies + Avengers Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame)
"from the meet cute to the tragic separation, their bond has all the elements of a classic romance." - Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely
"Just as Jeph and Tim’’s earlier Daredevil: Yellow, Spider-Man: Blue, and Hulk: Gray all dealt with the major love interests in, the heroes’ lives, so too does Captain America: White. Steve and Bucky are each other’s soulmate." - Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely
“So you have a character in Captain America who is searching for the only thing that he has left from his past that has any meaning to him, and that’s Bucky; and people have interpreted that relationship all kinds of ways and it’s great...we will never define it, as filmmakers, explicitly." - The Russos (Captain America: Civil War press)
"You mean, aside from Cap and Bucky?" - Anthony Russo (co-director of Cap 2 and 3 and Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame) when asked about romance in Captain Amierca: Civil War
"Moderator: But you already had a romantic B story with Cap and Bucky, right?
Anthony: We sure do
Joe: We still do
Moderator: Did you ever had to dial down the sexual tension on set?
Joe: Why would we?" - Anthony and Joe Russo (directors of Cap 2 and 3 and Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame) at a screening of Captain America: Civil War
Tumblr media
Just a few examples directly from Marvel and the writers and directors.
merthur totally should win for so many reasons but mostly. most because the show writer, when advertising the last episode, said it was “a love story between two men” and then arthur just died in merlin’s arms for 42 minutes. on the day before christmas.
I put the first episode of Merlin, because I heard it was such a great show. I knew nothing about the ship at that point. I only put it on because i love shows like that. Before the first episode was over I was like OMG those two are gayer than later seasons Destiel. There is no way it was not intentional. NONE. Big time homoerotic vibes. It was great
I get the coding critique, but I think I disagree with the person who said they never teased a relationship with Merthur. If we’re talking “offhanded jokes that they’re more than friends” (or that other characters thought they were together a la Sherlock), I think the poetry and pants scenes fit that.

Loki and Queerness in the MCU
by Sam H.
Tumblr media
Read on our site!
There’s an ongoing joke among movie fans that there have been countless “Disney’s first gay character,” which include the unnamed gay character Joe Russo played in Avengers: Endgame. Not only does this joke speak to Disney failing miserably at providing meaningful queer representation, but it also indicates how desperate queer audiences are for representation, so much so that corporations believe that handing us scraps is the equivalent of a meal.
I will admit that I’m guilty of buying into bare minimum queer representation, but so is the majority of online queer spaces. For example, I recently found out that Maeve and Aimee from Sex Education aren’t actually a sapphic couple as people on Twitter had somehow convinced me through their fancams. I recently had a similar realization with Loki and Mobius with the release of the new season of Loki.
Look, I know I said that I’m not the biggest fan of Loki, so it was surprising that I gave the show a second chance. The main reason why I watched the first season in the first place was more out of obligation to keep up with the MCU, but for the second season, I only watched because I heard tons of people calling Loki and Mobius “queerbait” and pointing out the codependent nature of their relationship. However, three episodes into the new season, I noticed that it seems like, somehow, compared to the first season of Loki, the queer rep is abysmally lacking.
Part of the reason could be that the first season of Loki was directed by Kate Herron, who identifies as queer and didn’t return for the second season. But even when she was at the helm, the only moment that canonized Loki’s bisexuality was a single line in which he said that he enjoyed the company of both princesses and princes. Lines like these is where the problem with a lot of mainstream queer representation lies: the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it phenomenon, coupled with the confirmed-in-external-interviews incidents.
This has been a common debate for queer representation in media for a very long time and across many franchises, though they all noticeably, but unsurprisingly, seemed to be linked with Disney. In Star Wars, Lando’s pansexuality was only confirmed off screen and the scene of two women kissing at the end of Episode 9 was definitely a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment. Even in other Marvel media, America Chavez’s mention of her two moms and Valkyrie’s attraction to women were barely touched upon, merely throwaway lines that almost no one will remember once they leave the theater.
The one exception to this frustrating pattern is Phastos from Eternals. A central part of his identity is his queerness, mostly exemplified through his family life with his husband and his son. However, on the account of Eternals being a primarily ensemble movie, he isn’t the main focus and thus his storyline, in countries where LGBT censorship is extreme, was completely cut out.
The argument for blink-and-you’ll-miss-it queer representation is that queerness shouldn’t be the central focus of queer characters because queerness is only one facet of identity. While this is true, queer representation should be spelled out on screen because queer representation has already been very discreet in the past and it’s time that queer representation is visible and essential to the story. Even if queerness is only one facet of a character’s identity, queerness is an inextricable part of the character that should be part of their development and story, embedded in ways that cannot be easily erased.
The range and inconsistency of committing to queer representation within the MCU bring in the question of whether we can really trust corporations to provide us with the representation queer audiences so desperately crave, even if they have the biggest platform to have the most impact with authentic queer representation. But this also reveals the importance independent films have within the queer media ethnography as independent films have the most capability to provide that authentic representation, even if they aren’t as popular as MCU media. Ultimately, while there’s no one correct way for queer representation to exist, it’s important to consider the intention behind queer representation, especially when it comes to the fleeting moments that corporations claim we should be satisfied enough with.

Taika Waititi not putting any major gay couples on screen in his movie and then making his CGI rock character that he played the "gay representation" is literally just the Gay Joe Russo cringe moment from Endgame you all dunked on except the circlejerk is currently in his favor so it's ok. Sweet. I hope this man enjoys his new career as a creatively sterile workhouse for the mouse lol. Hope the money was worth it.

Community Analysis By Lucanator
Tumblr media
-my favorite line this episode was “where do we go on saturdays you said sunday” it was just delivered rlly well.
-Shirley and Jeff were sort of the first “genuine friendship”
-“we wanted jeff to be kind of entangled/trapped in each of the characters lives”
-the crew refers to the study group as The Family :((( ♥️
-they now have the paramount lot/set so they don’t shoot on location anymore
-DONALD IMPROVISED TROY’S “BREAKING POINT” FREAK OUT HE IS SUCH A GENIUS.
-Joe russo is responsible for a lot of the ‘needle drops’ (music)
JEFF WINGER:
-starts to see the group as “true friends” has lunch with them and tries to be a good friend
-either loves britta or is jealous of young and handsome vaughn
-calls vaughn “very cute”. forever pushing the Bi Jeff Agenda. dan says “i think hes gay!”
ABED NADIR:
-Pheobe Buffay kinnie
-people perceive him as a ‘robot’ for staying in the same room calmly for 26 hours but it turns out he just did it because he wants to be a good friend to annie.
-first comparison to Rain Man
-mirroring Jeff and Shirley laughing then looks to troy for help/confirmation
TROY BARNES:
-first sign of wild emotionality and outbursts, clearly insecure abt it.
-strong arms, sits gay.
-spending more time jokin around with Abed
ANNIE EDISON:
-‘psycho’
-controls her face and tone to get what she wants
-i don’t care she’s perfect
BRITTA PERRY
-really really odd/unpredictable the first few episodes
SHIRLEY BENNETT
-first ‘syllable breakup’ and miss piggy voice
-loves gossip
PIERCE HAWTHORNE
-religious freedom advocate?!???! “whatever entity you choose”
-kinda impressed by his wisdom at the end
-buffoon
At the end of every season i’ll be making a video to gather all the important stuff. I’ll most likely post it on youtube so it’ll be linked in a few weeks :)

What is the worst meta you have encountered. What claim has been so preposterous that you have contemplated deleting the Internet. Please bless us with others’ failures of critical thinking
Trust me, Mundie, when I say I have wiped most of them from my brain. Otherwise I will surely have gone insane.
I do remember reading something that is clearly a headcanon being billed as a meta. I think it was something for TFATWS; someone was literally headcanoning what Sam and Bucky might have done during the off-screen downtime, either between episodes or in the time-skip in a montage. They were headcanons inspired by canon events and characterisation, sure, but they are theories, speculations, and creative writing on what Sam and Bucky have gone up to in that unmentioned time. Then that OP tagged the post as 'meta' and I just, *facepalm* my child, that is not meta. Meta is analysis. You wrote a headcanon post. Please learn the word.
The actual 'bad' take I've seen isn't one meta, but I see people keep trying to refute it, and it is: the idea that AC/AOS is somehow not MCU canon, and they need Marvel to somehow 'adopt' AC/AOS back and 'make it MCU canon'.
LIke, first of all, AOS literally is an offshoot of MCU; you have the same Coulson as in The Avengers (2012). Same for AC; you have the same Peggy Carter. Please. (Not to mention the fact that James D’arcy’s Jarvis has already been adopted into the MCU, a la Endgame.)
There was this whole deal about how AOS has split off from MCU from S5, and I really don't understand. They say that because Daisy prevented Earth from being shattered by her/Graviton, it has created a new branching timeline and therefore is no longer in the same MCU timeline.
Which. My brother in MCU. Allow me to point you to Agents of SHIELD Season 5 Episode 20.
Tumblr media
Thanos was heading to Earth as the events of AOS S5 were unfolding. I really would say when Daisy prevented the Great Quakening from blowing Earth apart, she ensured that the real MCU timeline could continue, that there would still be an Earth for Thanos to land on and for the events of Infinity War to take place. How have they created a branching timeline please enlighten me.
Then those same people were saying that S6 was definitely not in the MCU timeline, because no one got blipped and the team did not address the Snappening. Again, my brother in MCU, do you know which other main MCU team didn’t get blipped? That’s right, OG6 Avengers. Just because no one got blipped doesn’t mean the blip didn’t take place.
As for the whole ‘the blip didn’t get addressed’ thing, I think we can all agree that Marvel is pulling a lot of strings in the background deciding what can/can’t AOS mention, but the plot of S6 does not suggest that it can’t take place concurrently with the aftermath of the blip. Think about how small the scope of S6 and S7 actually is. They were mostly in the Lighthouse, I think there was one park scene, they were in rural Ohio for a while, in a desolate temple somewhere...and then they travelled into the past! For all we know, while Daisy was busy containing that atomic bomb on Sarge’s death mobile, Steve could be out there holding a support group with gay Joe Russo.
There were some points made out there about continuity issues between AC/AOS and main MCU, but like—look, Marvel is three plot points wearing one big trench coat pretending to be one cinematic universe. There are loads of show out there with blatant plot holes or continuity issues, like Glee, but we don’t go around saying ‘x episode of Glee doesn’t count as canon Glee-verse’, right?
(Also. Since the beginning of the MCU, Disney’s been putting more and more Marvel attractions in Disneylands around the world, where the general premise is at least MCU-adjacent if not compliant. If you take a look at those Marvel attractions, you will find that AC/AOS are at least Disneyland-canon. In Avengers Campus Paris, there’s a restaurant furnished as ‘an old SSR facility’ that showed Peggy’s red hat from AC, as well as a picture of Michael Carter. In Hong Kong Disneyland, they put the Blitzkrieg Button in the Howard Stark section of ‘Stark Expo’, regularly play the AOS theme outside the SHIELD building, and feature the 0-8-4 from S1E02 in the SHIELD equipment room.)
So yea. This turned from lowkey dragging bad meta into writing essentially a counter meta.

I loved thor love and thunder but it was not Marvel most gay movie. If it was truly Marvel most gay movie we would have actually had valkryie kissing that woman and actually had a subplot of her finding love. Just because the straight male actor inserted himself as the token gay rock man doesn't make this Marvel most gay movie.
That's like saying endgame was gay because of the gay joe Russo cameo.
