I think it should be socially acceptable to say smth like "if it brings you comfort, by all means," or even just "I/my family don't share those beliefs, but I appreciate it" when an evangelical hears about smth shitty happening to your family and says they'll pray for y'all. like I do appreciate you're trying to help through your religion, but telling me, someone who doesn't share your religion (or even basic beliefs about prayer), is not really helpful rn and comes off as more proselytizing than empathetic. esp as someone whose family you believe is going to hell for having different beliefs and practices.

it's just so uncomfortable, and I wish I could come up w smth socially acceptable to say other than "thank you." bc I'm not thankful, it's uncomfortable, I get you're trying to be kind but there's ways to be kind without bringing religion into it. esp if they already know you do not share that religion. why am I impolite for being uncomfortable when someone takes my family's struggles as an opportunity to bring up their religion
