Lesley Tellez, a food journalist and author of the cookbook “Eat Mexico: Recipes from Mexico City’s Streets, Markets and Fondas,” said that while she hadn’t seen the full episode, she found the snippets that were circulating on social media unimaginative.
Despite its diversity, Mexican cuisine gets overshadowed in the culinary world by European cuisines, she added, and the show’s treatment of it perpetuates misconceptions.
“I think they should have been a lot more thoughtful about it,” Tellez told CNN. “It reduces Mexican food to stereotypes – to being this two-dimensional cuisine.”
Though it would have veered from the show’s typical format, Tellez said she would have liked to see “The Great British Bake Off” bring in a Mexican chef as a guest, as opposed to having two White, British judges serve as authorities.
Alejandra Ramos, host of “The Great American Recipe” on PBS and a chef of Puerto Rican descent, said the episode reflected a lack of diversity behind and in front of the camera.
“This would have been a perfect moment to bring in a Mexican guest judge or host to lead the discussions on camera and to guide the contestants,” she wrote in an email to CNN. “There should have also been consultants with actual Mexican cultural and food background and expertise brought in to consult on the story, scripting, food styling and challenges – as well as the post-production and marketing.”
Ramos also questioned why a baking competition would challenge contestants to make tacos – a point viewers of the show have also called out on social media.
“Mexico has incredible pastries, cakes, breads, and even baked savory dishes that they could have made instead,” she said. “But that would have called for more actual knowledge about Mexican culture and cuisine which is clearly lacking here.”
CNN has reached out to “The Great British Bake Off” for comment.
Since the first episode aired in 2010, “The Great British Bake Off” – which streams stateside as “The Great British Baking Show” – has become a cultural phenomenon, soothing viewers with its spirit of camaraderie and offering them an escape. Still, it’s garnered complaints of cultural insensitivity before.
During a “Japanese Week” episode in 2020, some contestants devised concoctions that instead relied on Chinese and Indian flavors, which some critics said amounted to conflating distinct Asian cuisines. That same episode saw Lucas refer to katsu curry as “cat poo curry.”
“Anyone who’s watched GBBO also knows how prickly the judges get when they think something has too much spice, how easily they exoticize non-British foods, and how the standard marker of a good baker is their ability to make a Victoria Sponge,” Jaya Saxena wrote in a 2020 article for Eater.
Former contestants have also spoken out on the show’s diversity issues.
In an interview with Insider last year, Rav Bansal called for new hosts and judges who were better versed in non-English ingredients and recipes, and who could better reflect the show’s diverse cast of contestants. Ali Imdad expressed surprise that production staff had allowed certain missteps to occur. Ruby Tandoh referred to the show as a “strange vehicle for change,” writing in an essay for the food publication Heated that it had launched the careers of several Black and brown chefs while being “steeped in the symbolism of an old-fashioned, implicitly white Britishness.”

Watching GBBO Mexican Week rn
I'm screaming
The pan dulce is dry? IT'S JUST LIKE THAT, PAUL. YES, IT'S DRY. IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE.
TACK-OS for the technical? WITHOUT PROVIDING A TORTILLA PRESS? And I'm sorry, but the tortilla needs a LITTLE COLOR, PAUL. DO YOU LIKE RAW TORTILLAS? And fuck off, they had just as much filling as you did in the example tacos, you're so full of shit OMG.
I can't even comment on the Tres Leches. I kept pausing to yell at the screen. What a shitshow. Actually, I can comment on it. There isn't enough time to do tres leches, first of all. It needs time to soak. Overnight, if possible. LAYERS? Fuck offffffff. No. And Prue, THE LIQUID ABSOLUTELY SHOULD BE LEAKING OUT THE BOTTOM!
I hate them so much
Not the contestants
But the judges, the hosts, and the producers? 💯%
This may be the nail in the coffin for me. GBBO may finally be officially more aggravating than enjoyable, and though it's been trending that way for years, it's finally done it for good. Japanese Week in 2020 was pretty bad and they clearly learned nothing. No research done at all. No guest judge or at least a consultant. Racist jokes. Nope, that's it.

A Non-Exhaustive List of Stuff to Watch During the Strike
Everybody has a backlog of things to watch, but for everyone who is like me and routinely looks at that backlog and goes "but none of those hundred things sound interesting right now", here are some recommendations.
If You Have…
NETFLIX
Avatar The Last Airbender: Animated/Fantasy; 3 seasons; A teenage chosen one reawakens 100 years into the war he’s meant to stop. If you somehow are on Tumblr and haven’t seen this show, give it a try now.
Cunk on Earth: Documentary; 1 season; A very serious documentary that very seriously tells the story of the history of human progress.
Glow Up (2019): Competition; 4 seasons; Aspiring makeup artists compete for opportunities in the industry.
Nailed It! (2018): Competition; 7 seasons; Nicole Byer and Jacques Torres laugh with people who are not bakers as they try to bake extremely complicated desserts in less time than professionals could do it.
Wynonna Earp (2016): Western Horror; 4 seasons; The cursed descendant of famous lawman Wyatt Earp hunts demons in a small Canadian town alongside her (canonically bisexual) little sister, a US Marshall, an immortal Doc Holliday, and a (canonically lesbian) local cop.
HULU
Domino Masters (2022): Competition; 1 season; A competition show where teams build Rube Goldberg devices primarily focusing on dominos.
Holey Moley (2019): Competition; 3 seasons; Increasingly ridiculous mini golf holes where the ball can go into a water hazard but the people go in much more frequently.
Lego Masters (2020): Competition; 3 seasons; Teams of two build complex Lego designs based on each week’s theme.
Primeval (2007): Sci-Fi; 5 seasons; British scientists and government officials discover fluctuating portals to various time periods, which release dinosaurs and other creatures into the modern day. You’ll watch the first season and go “idk why this is considered good” and then all the other seasons will happen.
DISNEY PLUS
DuckTales (2017): Animated/Adventure Comedy; 3 seasons; A reboot of the 80s show of the same name, but with better character development and better treatment of its female characters.
The Owl House (2020): Animated/Horror Comedy; 3 seasons; An Afro Latina human girl is on her way to summer camp to be taught “normalcy” when she goes through a portal and finds herself in the Demon Realm. She decides that it’s way better than camp and stays. Friendship, family, love, and PTSD ensue.
MAX
Baking Championships: The Baking Championships (Kids Baking Championship, Halloween Baking Championship, Holiday Baking Championship, Spring Baking Champion Championship) are all a nice heartwarming fun time.
The Great Pottery Throw Down (2015): Competition; 5 seasons; You know how chill and fun GBBO is? Imagine that but with pottery.
CRUNCHYROLL
RWBY (2013): Animated/Fantasy; 9 seasons; A group of girls join a school to train for hunting monsters and fighting crime with cool weapons that are usually some sort of melee weapon and also a gun. The animation gets better with every season.
NO STREAMING SERVICES
Board Game Club: An ongoing series on the No Rolls Barred YouTube page; a bunch of people get together and play board games. This probably sounds like it would be boring but it is absolutely fantastic.
Critical Role: YouTube; 2 completed campaigns, 1 ongoing; A group of voice actor friends get together to play Dungeons and Dragons. Increasingly well-produced over time.
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries: 100 episodes; An adaptation of Pride and Prejudice that takes place entirely over vlogs. Very funny, handles the confines of a vlog setting fairly well, and Ashley Clements (Lizzie) is fabulous.
Video Game YouTubers: Particularly Let’s Plays, speedruns, and challenges. I personally enjoy Pokemon challenges like by FlygonHG, and Super Mario Odyssey Hide and Seek by a bunch of different Mario streamers is great fun.

gonna try and list every theme this blog has gone through (and by theme i mean ✨️aesthetic✨️ not html coding i'm not smart enough for that asfdgfkd) bc i'm bored, like making lists, and just changed my theme and it prompted me to reminisce:
pastel purple + clouds and stars - the og from september 2018-2019 (this used to be one of those basic pictures that would come up first if you searched 'purple aesthetic' but now i can't find it 😭😭 went through a few different icons but i remember marinette was one of them and i think bow was one too?? maybe glimmer as well)
various colours + gbbo - late 2019 (don't ask... it was a weird phase of my life and we are respectfully not going to talk about it <3 /lh)
blue and purple + kipo - this must've been early 2020 since it was kipo!! (pretty sure the icon was kipo on the ferris wheel but i don't remember the header)
red and green + studio ghibli - 2021 (i call this one the strawberry one!! the header gif was of the rain from my neighbour totoro and it was super dark green. i might have had it in 2020 as well? idk. went through many icons with this one, all i know is there was bi malvie, bi jewel sparkles, bi frances janvier and bi draculaura)
autumn orange and green + over the garden wall - october 2021 (this one was cute for the season but it didn't feel right having no pink on my blog. i don't remember the header (may have also been rain?) but i know the icon was greg holding the frog)
neon pink and black + draculaura - november 2021 (this one slayed tbh. went through a few icons including draculaura, bi peter parker, and ricky rain frog)
dark blue and purple + angels in america - may 2022 (i was rly attached to this one i lovedddd the vibes (plus my icon of prior standing in front of the angel statue was so!!), but unfortunately the brainrot of the next one was too strong </3)
light pink and blue + stranger things - august 2022 (i spent way too long making that fucking weezer edit and had nowhere to put it so, unfortunately, i had no choice but to make it my header. my bi steve icon is beloved even if it was frequently abandoned for various byler cults <33)
pastel pink and purple + do revenge - september 2022 (this movie slaps so hard i'm OBSESSED and the gradient on the post was so pretty i just had to incorporate it into my blog!! it took a lot of trial and error because i had to extend the gradient myself but i eventually got it. the icon of eleanor with headphones is also my lb profile pic <3)
yeah... pretty sure there's more than that but i can't remember 😔

Gabe texts Clint a thank you and asks who told him about Gabe’s birthday. Maya wishes Gabe a happy birthday and tells him he’s not allowed to laugh at her bad Spanish accent.

Back in 2020 I drew portraits of the season 11 Bake-Off losers, as they lost. I didn't keep the motivation going to the whole season, but I did more than half lol.
I chose Loretta as my favorite that season, to cheer her to the final. She got eliminated first 🤣
I also liked Sura, she was so expressive.

That's interesting so CBC Gem(CBC's streaming site) has all 13 seasons of GBBO but the years are listed wrong.
The first 3 are listed as 2020 but later ones are listed as 2017 or 18.

Hate-watching GBBO, but pirating it because I'm not rewarding them with views through Netflix after seeing what's going around about Mexican Week (ep4).
The show was best with Mel and Sue. Sandy ended up being delightful. Noel was fine when paired with Sandy, but ever since Sandy left I've been very disappointed in the tone of the show. In Matt's first season I almost stopped watching entirely. I eventually did keep going but it's turned into hate watching.
I'm sure I keep trying to watch because I'm seeking the same delight I got from Mary Berry's era, but it's just not there anymore.
Japanese Week in 2020 was awful. And they decide to do another themed week this year without learning from their last misstep? At this point, it's wilful malice to treat non-European cultures this way, not even showing the most basic level of respect by doing the barest amount of research so that you're at least pronouncing the words as closely to correct as possible. It's wilful malice to make a "joke" about whether Mexico is a real place after the hosts appear dressed in a caricature of Mexican culture.
I think I'm going to have to abandon the show at some point, as it's no longer bringing me joy. But I'm hate-watching the first episode of the current season right now (again, pirating because fuck them) and I have a very minor and unimportant gripe to add to the very major and important gripe I've outlined above.
I'm halfway through episode one and I think the Red Velvet Cake they asked them to bake sounds disgusting. How are they going to ask for a cake that's primarily frosting and call that good? I've only ever had Red Velvet as two or three full layers, not six half layers, and no one in their right mind should think six layers with an equal amount of frosting for each layer is a good cake. You may as well be eating a tub of straight frosting at that point. 🤢

Year-end personal goals and culture roundup for 2022:
I deliberately set no personal goals out of laziness and also to see what would happen. What happened was a mixed bag:
Did not exercise basically all year
Was less politically engaged than in previous election years
Read fewer books than expected
Did maintain a 300+ day streak in Duolingo, with the help of many streak freezes
Worked a lot of extra hours
Saw a lot of theater
This year I think I will set some sort of health goal because the lack of exercise (and poor sleep habits) made themselves pretty apparent toward the end of the year.
Culture stuff
Theater:
Went back to my pre-pandemic habits and saw 23 unique shows (plus a few repeats). Individual posts are linked; for ones where I didn’t write a post it was probably because I didn’t have the time or energy.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie
Slave Play
Assassins
The Lehman Trilogy
Hadestown
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Tootsie
Aida
King James
Pretty Woman
Come From Away
Lempicka
Moulin Rouge
Dear Evan Hansen
The Prom
+ More thoughts on The Prom
Oklahoma!
Jagged Little Pill
To Kill A Mockingbird
Omar
2:22: A Ghost Story
Invincible
Clyde's
Bat Out Of Hell
Music:
It is the first time in a while that my most-listened to song has not been from Eurovision or Melodifestivalen. I am finding that if I don’t make an effort to listen to music, I don’t listen to music, which is disappointing.  In any case, my most listened to track appears to have been Tove Styrke’s 2020 cover of “Bara du och jag” from Så mycket bättre season 11.  (My most-played Eurovision song was “Með hækkandi sól” by Systur, which ended up around #3 overall.)
Television:
Supergirl S1 (yes I am still trying to finish Season 2)
The Great American Barbecue Showdown (unexpectedly engaging)
The Great British Baking Show/GBBO S13 (liked the contestants, still puzzled by the taco technical)
The Midnight Club (not especially scary or horrifying, which is fine since I am not typically into horror; even so this has got me interested in Mike Flanagan’s other work)
Street Food: USA (apparently food holds my attention well)
Andor S1 (as good as everyone says)
Kalifat (compelling, also a bit depressing and cynical)
Movies:
Not much of a year for movie-watching since I spent so much time on live theater. Of the things I saw that were released this year, I think there was only Avatar 2 and Glass Onion. Might rewatch Glass Onion if there’s a commentary available.
Books:
Sprinting Through No Man’s Land: Endurance, Tragedy, and Rebirth in the 1919 Tour de France by Adin Dobkin: First book I managed to finish this year and it wasn’t until late August. Knew basically nothing about the Tour de France but this felt like part history and part travelogue, which kept me interested.
The Future is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia by Masha Gessen: Listened to on audio, does provide some context for the current war in Ukraine, though history of Russia prior to 1980s or so remains a large gap in my knowledge
Less by Andrew Sean Greer: Essentially a bit of a slow-burn romantic comedy, fun airplane read
Brown Girl in the Ring by Nalo Hopkinson: dystopia + magic, good combo; very specific location (post-apocalyptic Toronto) is also good

Finally the showstopper saw the bakers make a caged tart before Paul and Prue handed over a 5th different star baker of the series whilst we were left with only. For the pumpkin layer, mix together the ingredients until combined.Set aside to cool slightly (still in the tin) while you make the fillings. Put on a baking tray and bake for 20-25min until the pastry sides are set, then carefully lift out baking parchment and beans. Line pastry case with a large piece of baking parchment and fill with baking beans. Preheat oven to 180☌ (160☌ fan) mark 4.Use to line a 23cm round, deep, loose-bottomed tart tin. Add egg mixture to flour and pulse/mix to combine. In a small bowl, mix together the egg and vanilla. In a food processor, pulse the flour, icing sugar and butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs (alternatively, rub butter into dry ingredients using your fingertips).
