thinking about..... my garbage court au. I think the Will in that story is not someone I can empathize with anymore, and it makes it hard to take the story the direction that was planned.

Like it's all self insert, right? I can admit that. The Nate of ~2012-16 was desperate for community and acceptance, and quite frankly, I made a lot of choices that were not bringing me happiness. But I've realized the last few years that I was chasing a future I'm not guaranteed, and that other people wanted for me more than I did. I took a look at what made me happy, and it was not The Grind.

My ambition was tied into a superiority complex because I was told too young that I was Going Places, and smarter than Those Other Kids. My whole sense of self and value was attached to this! But it's lonely when you accept very few people to be on your level, and even lonelier when those peers think you're the one who's lesser.

That was Will's arc, his whole motivation. He thought he'd get out to the city where people are more educated and progressive and experimental, and he'd find people that would accept him instead of shun him. But he just ends up used, played by people who saw his blind ambition and wrung everything they could out of him.

The ending was definitely going to be a Bad End, but how else could it have played out? The only happy ending there was for Will was to accept he was always going to be used unless he was more powerful than everyone else. Be happy as a kept pet or rise above and rule on your own. Throw away your pride and gain love, or keep your pride and gain security. It's a compelling story, but through the lens of all the projection I was throwing on Will, god are these my choices? A cog in the machine or the machine itself?

Now I look around what makes me happy in the moment, instead of looking forward to some day where I'll be happy in the future. Will's mindset, with so much internal pressure to perform and conform, is just exhausting. I want to write the story that gave me so much clarity about my own life but I'm too busy actually enjoying my life. I have a life outside of work/school/internet, friends I love and get to see, hobbies I'm improving in.

All this to say I'm sad I didn't write it when I was in a headspace more suited to it.
