The Daughter of Poseidon (Heroes of Olympus Fanfic) Part One

A/N: Starts with the lost hero and will end with The Blood of Olympus. There'll be references and flashbacks to Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Campers gather around the lake. In the lake's shallow waters, a golden chariot smolders as a group of people emerges.

A sandy-haired girl shoves her way to the shoreline.

“Annabeth! What happened?” she calls out. She crosses the sand. Worry bubbles within as she glances behind Annabeth not recgonizing any of the three kids behind her. Where is he?

“Della–” Annabeth starts, but is cut off.

Will comes up behind Della with a stormy look on his face. His arms cross over his chest,

“Annabeth I said you could borrow the chariot not destroy it!”

“Will I’m sorry, I’ll get it fixed, I promise,” Annabeth sighs.

“You didn’t find him did you?” asks Della. She fidgets with her necklace. Four beads for each summer at camp and a small piece of aqua sea glass wrapped in a cord.

“These are the ones? Way older than thirteen. Why haven’t they been claimed yet?” asks Will.

Annabeth pinches the bridge of her nose.

“Claimed?” a scrawny kid asked.

“No, I didn’t find Percy,” Annabeth says ignoring the scrawny kid.

Murmurs erupt from the crowd.

“Well,” Drew says, “I hope they’re worth the trouble.”

Della tries not to roll her eyes. Sure, these kids weren’t Percy but were still worth saving at the end of the day.

“Gee thanks,” says the skinny one, “What’re we your new pets?”

“No kidding,” says the other boy, “How about some answers before you start judging us–like what is this place–why are we here, how long do we have to stay?”

The world seems to dull around Della when she fully looks at him. Grey-blue eyes and angelic blonde hair are all she can see. A warm feeling encapsulates her. Something she hasn’t felt since–something she hasn’t thought she’d ever be able to really feel again–something she hasn’t felt since she met Luke four years ago.

The girl in the group crosses her arms and scoots closer to the boys. Behind her choppy hair, Della could see just how beautiful she was.

“Jason,” Annabeth says, “I promise we’ll answer your questions. And Drew–” Annabeth gave her a pointed look, “all demigods are worth saving. But I’ll admit, this trip didn’t accomplish what I’d hoped.”

“We didn’t ask to be brought here you know,” says the girl.

Drew sniffs and points her nose in the air, “And no one wants you here hon. Does your hair always look like a dead badger?”

Piper about lunges at her when Annabeth stops her.

Della glares at Drew, “Dang Beth I would’ve loved to see her strangle Tanaka.”

Drew looks about ready to snark back–

“We need to make our new arrivals welcome,” says Annabeth. She trails on about assigning them guides.

Suddenly, the other campers gasped. Above the skinny kid’s head appears a symbol of fire, Hephaestus.

“That is claiming,” says Annabeth.

The scrawny kid freaks out,

“Is my hair on fire?” he tries running but the symbol follows him.

Della suppresses a giggle. This one was funny.

“This can’t be good,” Butch mutters, “The curse–”

“Butch shut up,” Annabeth cuts him off, “Leo you’ve just been claimed–”

“By a god right?” asks Jason, “That’s the symbol of Vulcan right?”

Vulcan? Oh right, that’s Hephaestus’ Roman name. Wait–why does Jason know that?

All eyes are on Jason.

“Jason, how do you know that?” Della asks.

“I’m not sure.”

Della can see the cogs in Annabeth’s head turning.

“What’s a Vulcan? I don’t even LIKE Star Trek. What are you talking about?” asks the scrawny–no Leo.

“Vulcan is the Roman name for Hephaestus. The god of blacksmiths and fire,” Annabeth answers Leo.

“The god of what? Who?” asks Leo.

“Will, would you take Leo, and give him a tour? Introduce him to his bunkmates in Cabin Nine.” Annabeth asks.

“Sure Annabeth.”

“What’s Cabin Nine? I am not a Vulcan!”

“Come on Mr. Spock, I’ll explain everything,” says Will. He puts a hand on Leo’s shoulder and whisks him away from the crowd.

Della glances at Annabeth who’s eyes are focused on Jason. She stands beside Annabeth about to ask what she is staring at when she sees it. Dark lines were etched into the skin of his arm. It almost looks like a barcode with an eagle and the letters SPQR.

“I’ve never seen marks like these,” says Annabeth, “Where did you get them?”

Jason shakes his head. “I’m really getting tired of saying this but I don’t know.”

Della holds an arm out to keep the others back. Whatever these marks are they are rather unsettling.

“Guys give us some room,” says Della. “They look burned into your skin,” observes Annabeth.

“They were…at least I think they were. I don’t remember.” Jason winces and places a hand against his head.

Della glances at Annabeth. “What do you think?” she asks.

“He needs to go straight to Chiron,” Annabeth says, “Della would you–”

“Ugh no fair,” pouts Drew, “Why does she get to take him?”

Annabeth ignores her. “Course Beth, but we need to talk later,” Della says. She pats Jason on the back. “Come on Hercules follow me.”

sometimes i wonder if im the outlier in posts about how people dont bother to pronounce names because ive learned i pronounce several words egregiously wrong and have for several years of my life.

for example, "gaia" and "yaoi" (i pronounced them guy-ah and yay-oh), "tanaka" (i pronounced it "tah-ne-ka"), "jalapeno" (i pronounced it "jal-ah-pehn-yo"), "croissant" (i pronounced it "crew-sant"), "mississippi" (pronounced by spelling it. i usually only do this in my head but i actually struggle to pronounce it out loud because of it), etc

apparently ARG is pronounced ay-are-gee and not Argh, which is how i was saying it. i think i might just be kind of broken pronunciation wise

Rina is currently in the final year of high school and looking to study music at SFAI. She's also a wannabe idol, but that's something that her sister and parents are worried about because of how dark the show business is, especially when you're a musical idol.

Emiko is the owner of Tanaka DIY, the family's hardware store. Emiko also used to be a bike racer, and she has a reputation for being the "Hot Pot Shogun" in SoMa.

And Dae Seong is a doctor at the emergency department at SF's City General Hospital. Despite being a caring and well-meaning father, he has a pretty strained relationship with his daughters, especially Gogo, because of the pressure he puts on her to fit in...

And after knowing about his eldest's hero work, he looks like this for the rest of the season.

~Back In The Game~

~Chapter Twenty-Eight~

-Series Masterlist-

What happens when a girl who loves volleyball joins a boys' volleyball club? Does she find love? Will she relive her past or move forward? Join (L/N) (Y/N) on a journey with fun twists and turns.

I don't own Haikyuu or any of the characters.

-Last Time-

“We’re ready to play!!” The two exclaim together.

“...” Ukai watches as Hinata and Kageyama regroup with their teammates. “Sensei.” He says getting Takeda’s attention. “Those two.”

“Hm? Do you mean Hinata and Kageyama?”

“Yeah. They from the same middle school? Wait, it has to be earlier. The same elementary school then?”

“Oh no. They met at the beginning of this very semester. At first they didn’t hit it off at all. In fact, I hear it was pretty rough…? Ukai-kun?”

“...Now that was cold.”

“Huh?...?”

-Small Timeskip- [Score: Municipal Team-20, Karasuno-18]

“Heh! Not bad, kids. Not bad!” Shimada says as one of his teammates tells him it’s his serve. Shimada uses a jump float serve. The ball is heading toward Hinata. He gets ready to receive the ball but at the last second, it swerves in a different direction. Hinata dives for the ball but ends up face-planting onto the floor.

“Bwah Ha Ha! Check that out!” Shimada laughs.

“Someone sure is being mature.” Takinoue comments sarcastically

“Hmmm? What was that?” Takeda asks. “It didn’t seem like a particularly powerful serve from here, but…”

“It’s called a Jump Float serve.” Ukai interrupts with the answer. “You can do one without the jump, just from a standing position. The point is to hit the ball so it has no spin. That way when it’s in the air it’ll wobble erratically, curving or dipping unpredictably.”

“Oh! So it’s like a knuckleball in baseball! Interesting!”

“You can do it in soccer too. They even still call it a knuckleball, though they don’t use their hands. By the way, depending on the ball used in the game, it’ll move differently. The one we’re using today is a type that won’t swerve much…”

“Wait! Wait! Let me write this down!” Takeda says scrambling for something to take notes with.

“Do it again, Shimada!” One of the players encourages as said man serves again. Tanaka tries to receive it but fails due to the ball wobbling. This continues.

“That’s four in a row.” Ukai comments.

‘Gee, thanks, coach.’ You think sarcastically.

“That rookie pair might have a mean quick set, but everybody’s receiving sucks.” Ukai continues. “Especially the rookies.” The whistle is blown indicating that it’s the Municipal Team’s match point.

“Time to wrap this up!” Shimada declares as he serves once again. The ball flies toward Daichi, who receives it and passes it to Kageyama. The setter compliments his captain with a ‘Nice pass.’ Hinata runs to the net and jumps.

“You won’t get past us this time, shorty!” Takinoue exclaims as Ashai, another teammate, and he jump to block Hinata. Kageyama sets the ball to Tanaka, who is in the air on the other side of the net.

“Oops!” Asahi says as he follows the ball with his eyes.

“Gah!!” Takinoue looks at Tanaka.

“Hi there!!” Tanaka says. “Didja miss me?!” He asks as he spikes the ball, completely unmarked. Noya receives the ball, sending it to Suga as he gets praised.

“Suga!” Asahi calls for the ball. Suga smiles and calls to Ashai as he sets the ball to him. Hinata rushes to Asahi and jumps to block him. Asahi spikes the ball with so much force that when it hits Hinata’s hand he flinches. You wince and watch as the ball hits the floor earning the Municipal Team a point. This point secures them the second set win, in turn, it secures them the game. As the Municipal Team celebrates, Tanaka goes to Hinata.

“AAAUGH!! Hinata, I’m sorry, bro! I was totally free and clear on that hit too!” He says, hitting his forehead.

“N-No, that’s okay.” Hinata replies.

“Still, that was pretty awesome. You had them completely hooked! I’m almost kinda jealous. Couldn’t at least one of them mark me? I felt left out!” Tanaka then lowers his voice. “I’ll be counting on you next time too, bruh!”

“!! Y-Yes, sir!”

You walk over to the two.

“Hey, guys!” You say as they look at you and smile.

“Hey, (Y/N)!” Hinata greets happily.

“You guys did amazing! Hinata, that last rally was great. The way you pulled their attention was fantastic!” This causes the boy to blush. “And Tanaka, that spike was amazing and powerful!” Tanaka freezes before falling to his knees and crying about how their Angel praised him. “Oh! Hinata. Are your hands okay?” You ask, grabbing his hands to look at them. Hinata’s blush increases massively. “Ashai’s spike was really strong and I noticed you wince so I wanted to make sure you’re okay.”

“Y-Yeah. I-I’m okay.” Hinata assures flustered. You inspect his hands for a second longer before letting them go. Hinata is slightly disappointed, even though he was extremely flustered, he likes the feeling of your hands touching his.

“What about me, Angel?” Tanaka whines holding his hands toward you. You look at his hands and tell him he looks okay. “She said I look okay!” He celebrates. ‘Okay…’ You think. You look over to the Municipal Team and begin speaking.

“Alright guys, I’m going to go congratulate the others. See ya!” You wave, walking to the other team.

“Bye!” Hinata says as Tanaka is still freaking out.

“Excuse me.” You say walking to the original members of the Municipal Team, since they separated from the high schoolers. They stop to look at you.

“Yes?” Shimada replies.

“I wanted to congratulate you guys on your win. You all played amazingly.”

“Thank you…” Takinoue begins.

“Ah! I’m sorry! My name is (L/N) (Y/N).” You say bowing embarrassed.

“Nice to meet you, (L/N)-chan. I’m Takinoue Yusuke.”

“Nice to meet you too Takinoue Senpai.” You look at the other men waiting for them to introduce themselves.

“I’m Uchizawa Hidenori.”

“Mori Yukinari.” He says pointing to himself.

“And I’m Shimada Makoto.”

“It’s nice to meet you Uchizawa Senpai, Mori Senpai, Shimada Senpai.” You say looking at each man. “Shimada Senpai, your jump float serves were amazing!”

“Thank you, (L/N)-chan.”

“Please, (Y/N) is fine.” You smile at the four. Ashai, Suga, and Noya are talking which catches your attention. The four notices. You turn back to them. “If you’ll excuse me.” You bow. “It was nice meeting you Senpais. Congratulations again!” You say walking to your teammates.

“Suga! Asahi! Noya!” You get their attention.

“Hey, (Y/N).” Suga greets happily.

“Hey, (Y/N).” Asahi greets.

“Hey, Angel!” Noya says.

“Congratulations you guys! You all did amazing!”

“Thank you!” They all say.

“Suga, your setting was spot on! And Ashai, great spikes! Especially the last one! And Noya, your receives were phenomenal. That last one was just…wow!” They all blush and thank you. “I’m really proud of you three.” This shocks them. “I know I haven’t known you guys for very long and I may not know the full story, and may never, but seeing you three play together was heartwarming. Sure, at first it was a bit rocky and awkward but after you called for the ball that first time…” You look at Ashai. “...everything seemed to fall right back in place.” All three of them look at you in shock. “You guys looked so happy playing together after that. I can’t wait to see all of you guys play together. It’s going to be…I don’t know the right words but I can’t wait!” They stare at you, lost for words. You look between the three, and suddenly feeling embarrassed, you speak. “Well, I’m going to go talk to the others. See ya!” You walk away with a slight blush.

‘Wow…’ They think simultaneously while blushing. ‘She’s too sweet…’

-A Few Minutes Later-

“Man! I don’t get half of what happened, but ain’t the glory days of high school great?” Shimada says to Mori. “Call for the ball, Ace,” and all that. Oh, to be that young again!”

“Yeah, yeah! “As long as you’ve got me, you’re the greatest.” I wish I coulda said that in high school.” You look over to see Kageyama and Noya blushing. This causes you to giggle, only making it worse.

“You bet! You kids sure made us old farts feel extra old tonight!” Takinoue exclaims happily.

“Um, w-we’re sorry.” Suga apologizes.

“Naaah, it’s okay. There’s still a rawness to you guys…but once you all start working together, I wouldn't be surprised if you go places.” A huge smile spreads across your face.

“Thank you so much!” Everyone says at once.

“No prob.” Takinoue replies as the four men leave the gym.

“Right. First and foremost…receiving.” Ukai says addressing everyone.

a/n: hello! i decided to take part on this challenge and hopefully you all think this is as cute as i do!! i also have a highschool au of this fic so if anyone wants that I can also put that out lol

“I need your help.” It's the unfortunate truth, and he doesn’t see a way around it. Sure, it’ll suck to see Yamaguchi helping him with something like finding him a potential boyfriend, but he’d never figure it out on his own. He doesn’t have Yamaguchi’s people gift, one of the things that made him such a great partner to Kei.

“My help?” Yamaguchi repeats, sounding strangled. “Like we’re on another case or something?”

Kei can picture it- Yamaguchi with his badge, circling an interview room, the suspect denying knowing anything about liking Kei.

“Yeah, why not?” Yamaguchi shrugs, a small smile playing at his lips. Which Kei now can’t stop looking at. “It makes it more fun.”

“So you’ll help?”

Yamaguchi grins, leaning his chin on the palm of his hand. “Sure, why not? I’ll get to learn who caught the handsome and mysterious Tsukishima’s attention~”

"Tsukishima, did you hear?" Hinata bounces up to him, of all people, eyes wide. He’s in his field gear, hair sticking up the slightest bit in the back. He looks stupid, and Kei names a mental reminder to tell him that later.

"Hear what?" Kei asks, raising an eyebrow. He fills his mug with nasty coffee, already knowing it’ll be lukewarm.

Hinata's loud voice has managed to attract nearly the entire teams' attention, all of the other officers and detectives staring at them unsubtly. Kageyama is the only one not looking on with interest, his normal pinched expression filling his face instead. "Someone has a crush on you!"

Kei shrugs. "So what? Lots of people are attracted to me. And ‘crush’? What are we, high-schoolers?"

Hinata scowls, lips pursing. "Gee, you don't have to sound like such an entitled ass about it, got that? But anyway, the reason I'm saying something is because-" Hinata lowers his voice dramatically, though it’s still decibels above a normal person's volume “-it’s a guy.”

Kei shakes his head with a scoff. “Again, so what?” He still doesn’t see why Hinata felt the need to talk to him about this, pulling him into office gossip like it was something they did often.

“Well,” Hinata fidgets. “You like guys, right? So shouldn’t you want to know who it is so you can pursue him?”

The idea isn’t… entirely unappealing. He hasn’t had a boyfriend in quite some time, and never a serious one, and while he’s not hell-bent on getting one, it’d be kind of nice to have one so he could rub it in Tanaka and Noya’s faces the next time their old teammates came to visit.

But even as he half considers it, his eyes find Yamaguchi, who’s standing by the breakroom entrance next to Yachi in all of his detective-y glory, hands stuffed in the pockets of his well-worn tweed pants. “No, that sounds like too much work,” he says finally, turning away. “Now get back to work, idiot.”

His performance at work, is, well, inadequate, to say the least. He’s distracted, and it shows, causing him to misspell words and misfile reports. It’s enough to make Yamaguchi check up on him, eyes wide with concern.

“Tsukki, you feeling alright?” he asks, handing Kei his coffee mug. “You’re not getting sick, are you?” Yamaguchi looks like he wants to lean over and check Kei’s temperature himself, making him lean back slightly.

“No, I’m not getting sick,” Kei says, taking a long drink. For some reason, he’s focused on the freckles trailing under Yamaguchi’s shirt collar. God, what is up with him today?

“That’s good. I can’t have my favorite partner getting sick now, can I?” jokes Yamaguchi, warmth pouring from his smile, the secret one he only shares with Kei.

(He said it was a secret because he hates the way his cheeks puffed out, but Kei happens to find it adorable.)

Why does Kei feel so fuzzy inside? And adorable? What kind of adjective is that?

Aw, shit.

“Tadashi.”

Yamaguchi looks up, pen pausing on his paper. “Yeah, Tsukki?”

“Did you hear Hinata? In the breakroom today?” Kei asks, pushing his glasses up his nose. “He said someone liked me.”

“So? Lots of people like you.”

Kei nods. “That’s what I said. But Hinata said it was a guy, and well…” He shouldn’t be doing this. Shouldn’t be opening this line of communication with Yamaguchi. But he has to do something.

He couldn't like Yamaguchi, just couldn’t. That meant it was in his best interest to find out who liked him and see if he could be comfortable pursuing a relationship with him. Then he’d get over Yamaguchi and their partnership would be fine. Normal, like it should be.

“Well?” Yamaguchi prompts, putting his pen down completely, giving Kei his undivided attention. Kei hates that he notices that now, hates that it makes him feel special.

Kei takes a deep breath. “I want to find out who it is.”

Yamaguchi’s eyes widen, and he leans back slightly in his desk chair. “You do? But you’ve never given that sort of stuff much stock before.”

Kei shrugs. “I know that, but…” Trailing off, he sighs. “I know.”

“So what do you want from me?” Yamaguchi asks.

“My help?” Yamaguchi repeats, sounding strangled. “Like we’re on another case or something?”

Kei can picture it- Yamaguchi with his badge, circling an interview room, the suspect denying knowing anything about liking Kei.

“Yeah, why not?” Yamaguchi shrugs, a small smile playing at his lips. Which Kei now can’t stop looking at. “It makes it more fun.”

“So you’ll help?”

Yamaguchi grins, leaning his chin on the palm of his hand. “Sure, why not? I’ll get to learn who caught the handsome and mysterious Tsukishima’s attention~”

“Shut up, Tadashi,” Kei grunts, and Yamaguchi laughs.

“Sorry, Tsukki.”

“Detective Yamaguchi reporting for duty,” Yamaguchi says, sidling up to Tsukishima before the day begins. “Ready to begin work?”

“You’re still pretending it's a case?” Tsukishima questions, looking sideways at Yamaguchi who keeps that same determined face.

“Of course.” Yamaguchi salutes, grinning again. He did that a lot, Kei was starting to notice.

“Really?”

“It’s fun,” whines Yamaguchi, finally breaking character. “You’re such a spoilsport. This is why people think you’re mean.”

“Just because I don’t make a fool of myself doesn't mean I’m mean. I’m mean because I talk shit about other people,” Kei mutters, and Yamaguchi snickers. “And the only reason people don’t think you’re mean is because you say it more quietly than I do.”

“That’s not true,” Yamaguchi squawks, and Kei just looks at him. “Fine,” he amends. “Not totally true, anyways. But you’re getting focused on the wrong thing. We need to figure out who likes you.”

“Quiet down,” hisses Kei instinctively, looking around. Thankfully, no one’s paying attention to them, all wrapped up in their own conversations. “How do you, um, propose we start.” He was way out of his depth with this, but thankfully, Yamaguchi didn't tease him for it.

“Well, I figure we have to find the source of the rumor, meaning we’ve got to start with Hinata, see who he heard it from,” Yamaguchi explains, and Kei groans.

“Do we have to?” he asks pathetically, face scrunched up. “Can’t we do like, literally anything else?”

“Don’t you want to find out who likes you?”

“I mean, yeah,” he answers reluctantly.

“Then we’ve got to talk to Hinata,” Yamaguchi says sternly.

“Fine, fine.” Before they can talk more, the rest of the office starts getting to work, meaning they needed to do the same.

“So,” Yamaguchi says during lunch their lunch break, leaning towards Hinata. “Where’d you learn about that guy who has a crush on Tsukki?”

Hinata chews rapidly, swallowing the impossibly large bite he was working on, making Kei cringe. “Hm. I don’t remember so let me think for a second.” He taps his chin, eyes distant, and Kei shifts, trying not to appear suspicious. “Oh!” Hinata says suddenly, brightening. “Kageyama told me.”

Kei blanches. “What?”

“Yeah,” Hinata continues, unbothered. “Apparently he heard it somewhere and thought it was worth mentioning.”

Yamaguchi blinks. “Well then.”

“Why’d you want to know, anyways?” asks Hinata, raising his eyebrows dramatically. “You’ve never been interested in any of Tsukishima’s love life stiff before.” He pauses. “Is it because it’s a guy?”

“What? No,” Yamaguchi insists, voice higher than normal. “Just curious, I suppose. I wonder how this mystery guy feels having the rumor spread around. He’s probably heard the rumors since it’s someone from the agency and all.”

“Yeah, I don’t know,” Hinata says, taking another bite of food.

“I want something from the breakroom,” Yamaguchi says, rising suddenly. “Tsukki, come with me.” Only years of partnership allowed him to read Yamaguchi’s eyes, letting him know they weren’t really going to the vending machines.

“Alright, alright.” Kei made a show of grumbling, standing too. Hinata, oblivious as ever, just waved them off cheerfully.

“So we’ve got to talk to Kageyama,” Yamaguchi said once they were in the hall and Kei frowned.

“Do we have to?”

“Are you committed to finding this guy or not?” Yamaguchi asked plainly, spreading his hands. “I’ll only do what you’re comfortable with.”

Kei remembered the butterflies in his stomach, a new surge of determination rushing through him. “I want to know.”

“Okay.” Yamaguchi nodded. “Then we’ve got to find Kageyama.”

“He eats lunch with Yachi when he’s not with Hinata, usually by her desk” Kei supplied, and Yamaguchi’s eyes slid over him but he said nothing.

“Off we go, then,” he decides, adding a little skip to his step. It’s unbearably cute, even as Kei tells himself it most definitely isn’t.

They find Kageyama in the other seat at Yachi’s receptionist desk, sitting off to the side with her, head bent over his casework. Even though they were on break, he still was still working, much to Kei’s amusement.

“Hey, guys!” Yamaguchi greets, leaning against Yachi’s desk.

“Hello!” Yachi chirps, spilling around in her chair to face them. “What’s up?”

“I was curious,” Yamaguchi starts bashfully, and Kei had to admit he played his part well. “Hinata said he heard about the guy who liked Tsukki from you, Kageyama.”

“Oh,” Kageyama says, looking up. “Yeah.”

When it became apparent he wasn’t going to say anymore Kei sighs roughly as Yachi barely stifles her giggle.

“Who’d you hear it from?” Yamaguchi prompts, and Kageyama jerks his head towards Yachi.

“Hitoka told me about it.”

Yachi blushes slightly, ducking her head. “Ah, yes. But I didn’t know it was going to spread like this, I’m sorry!”

“It’s fine,” Kei says, if only to get her to stop bowing her head at him.

“So where’d you hear it from?” asks Yamaguchi, and Yachi’s lips thin as she looks away uncomfortably.

“I, ah, um, I overheard it accidentally.”

Yamaguchi tilts his head, and his face seems to be doing something a little funny. Yachi is looking at Yamaguchi very, very apologetically, and Kei is officially lost.

“Okay,” he says slowly, rolling his eyes. Why was it so hard to get the answers he wanted? “Who was talking about it?”

Yachi swallows visibly. “I don’t remember.”

“You’re lying,” Kei says flatly.

“I’m not!”

“You are.”

“No, I’m not!” Yachi looks close to tears, making Kei feel kind of bad.

“Okay, fine. Do you remember where you were when it happened?”

“I was in the filing room,” Yachi says, and Yamaguchi suddenly stands, stepping away from them.

“I’m sorry,” he says, not making eye contact with any of them. “I just remembered I have to do something.” He quickly leaves, Kei watching after him, confused.

“What just happened?” he asks Yachi, who’s pale, cheeks still stained red.

“I don’t- I can’t- It’s not my place,” she settles on eventually, chewing on her lip. “I’m sorry, Tsukishima.”

“What do you mean, ‘it’s not your place’?” questions Kei, but she just shakes her head.

“Look, just talk to Tadashi, okay? Be honest with him and don’t get upset at what he tells you.”

What? “I still don’t understand, but okay. See you.” Kei leaves too, walking back to the office he shares with Yamaguchi. He’s unable to talk to him, as he won’t even look at him, When he gets to the doors after the work day ends and sees Yamaguchi heading to his car without waiting for him, a sick feeling erupts in his stomach. What was going on?

When he gets to Yamaguchi's house, he’s not there.

“Kei, come in! Come in,” Yamaguchi’s roommate, Goshiki, says, ushering him inside. “Tadashi said he’d be home a little late, in fact, I assumed he was with you, but I guess now. Anyway,” he waves her hand with a small laugh. “He’s not here yet. Obviously, you can go up to his room to wait? Or I can get you something to eat or drink if you’d like.”

“No, I’m fine, thank you,” Kei replies. He’s a lot, but always pretty unobtrusive. “I think I’ll just wait for him in his room.”

“Alright, you know the way. Just holler if you need me!” He floats off, deeper into the house, and Kei quickly climbs the stairs, letting himself into a room almost as familiar as his own.

It’s overwhelmingly Yamaguchi. The bed is unmade, comforter piled by the foot of the bed, and there is paper strewn about the desk, old newspaper clippings and notes.

Laying down on his bed, Kei tells himself not to inhale or anything because that’d be very creepy. He does anyway, and the smell of Tadashi fills his nose, natural and comforting.

Busying himself, Kei opens his phone, playing a dumb game while he waits. It doesn’t take long for him to hear footsteps on the stairs, Yamaguchii’s voice echoing through the house.

When Yamaguchi opens the door, he freezes. “What are you doing here?”

“Why are you avoiding me?” asks Kei flatly, sitting up slightly.

“What?” Yamaguchi laughs nervously, running a hand through his hair. “I’m not avoiding you.”

“You are. Why?”

Sighing heavily, Yamaguchi sits down on his bed, loosening his tie. Kei moves over to make room for him. “Okay,” he starts, “I’m going to tell you something but don’t let it ruin our friendship.”

“I’d never,” Kei promises, feeling the words in his bones. “What’s up.”

“So the guy,” Yamaguchi says slowly. “The one who likes you, I know who it is.”

“You do?” Kei looks at him, stunned. “Then why didn’t tell me?”

Yamaguchi fidgets with his fingers, and Kei wanted to reach over and still his hands, quell the nervousness he’s feeling. “I, um, okay.” He lets out a slow, deep breath. “It’s um, me.”

“You?” Kei echoes, not believing his ears. “You like me?”

“Yeah,” Yamaguchi says, “but I won’t let it change our partnership or mess up our dynamic, I swear.”

“Wait.” Kei holds up a hand. “You like me?”

“I, yes?”

Letting out a relieved laugh, Kei flops back onto Yamaguchi’s bed, a smile spreading across his face. “You like me! Tadashi, this is great news.”

Yamaguchi eyes him, clearly worried. “It is?”

“Yes! I only wanted to find the other guy because I was trying to get over you.” Kei can see the moment his words sink in because as soon as they do, Yamaguchi flushes a deep, brilliant red. it’s beautiful.

“Oh thank god,” he breathes.

“Come here,” Kei says, somewhat hesitantly, as he motions for Yamaguchi to get closer to him. Sure, they’ve cuddled together plenty of times but this feels different, a thousand sparks moving across his body, emanating from everywhere Yamaguchi's skin is on his. “You’re so dumb. Why didn’t you just tell me?”

“I didn’t want to mess us up! We’re the best team in the agency and I didn’t want to switch partners.” Yamaguchi’s voice is somewhat smuggled by Kei's shoulder, and as he speaks, he snakes his arm around Kei’s waist. “But I uh, guess we cracked this case.”

“Shut up, Tadashi,” Kei grunts, and Yamaguchi’s apology is blocked by Kei’s lips on his.

Summary: You're a second-year and Karasuno's female manager. Before Nationals, all the volleyball teams come together for a training camp at Aoba Johsai. Almost all the volleyball boys take a liking to you—even the boys on the Karasuno team. (Every new chapter is a new character and a new scenario).

Moniwa is definitely the extra man that is a part of the Iron Wall. He’s not the central part of the Iron Wall; that title goes to everyone else. He’s the team captain, sure, but he’s passed that title to Futakuchi, so now he’s not as important as he once was. Not that he minds, though. He only wants one person’s attention. Your attention.

His crush on you started last year during the game with Karasuno at the Inter-High prelims. It was kind of love at first sight for him. He took one look at you on the bench, and he was smitten. His team obviously called him out on it. They all know about his crush, of course. He gets teased for it constantly by his team members.

Now that he’s at this training camp, it’s the perfect opportunity to tell you how he feels. Or so he’s heard.

“You need to tell her how you feel, you know?” Futakuchi says as he and Moniwa with the rest of Date Tech walk to their match against Fukuroudani. “She’s not gonna notice you unless you tell her.”

“I know, I know, Futakuchi, this isn’t the first time we’ve had this conversation this week,” Moniwa says. Futakuchi rolls his eyes.

“Gee, I wonder why we’ve had this conversation several times,” Futakuchi says sarcastically. Moniwa gives Futakuchi a look, and Futakuchi brushes it off. “Whatever, I just think you should say something cause she’s really popular.”

“She is?” Moniwa stops letting a few team members pass him. Futakuchi stops too.

“Yeah, you didn’t know that?” Futakuchi asks. Moniwa shakes his head.

“No, I didn’t,” Moniwa replies.

“Well, it’s true. Most of the guys are kinda into her,” Futakuchi starts walking again. “So, I think you have even more of a reason to say something to her.” Moniwa thinks for a bit.

“Maybe he’s right,” Moniwa says before running to catch up with the team.

You watch the Karasuno and Nekoma game pretty adamantly. Kiyoko and Yachi watching on either side of you. You love witnessing the plays and scores. Just seeing everyone play is such a sight. Kenma sets for Kuroo, who hits a brutal back attack. Nishinoya luckily saves the ball at the last second, and Tanaka gets the ball to Kageyama. Kageyama sets it for Tsukishima. Tsukishima uses a feint to trick up Yamamoto. The feint earns Karasuno a point. 18-17 in Karasuno’s favor. The game continues with Daichi’s serve.

“Do you know who we’re going up against after this?” you ask Kiyoko. She looks up to you from her notebook.

“We are going against Inarizaki first, and then is Date Tech,” she says. “Then if there’s time leftover. We’ll go up against Shiratorizawa.”

“Oh, so some pretty tough defensive and offensive teams,” Yachi says.

“Yeah, no kidding,” you say. You look back to the game. “I guess the boys have their work cut out for themselves today.”

“Seems that way,” Kiyoko says. You see that Yamamoto just makes a spike hit the floor, earning a point for Nekoma. Kuroo has the next serve, and it goes up and towards Daichi. Daichi receives it flawlessly. The ball is set for Asahi, and he gets through the double-man block and scores.

“Are you excited for one game in particular?” you ask, going back to the other managers. They both think for a minute before answering.

“I’m excited for the Inarizaki game because I want to see the Miya twins and their ace, Ojiro,” Yachi says.

“I guess I’m excited for the Shiratorizawa game if it does happen. I want to see how the team has improved since our last game with them,” Kiyoko says. You nod along to all statements.

“I think I’m excited for the Date Tech game,” you say.

“Why’s that?” Yachi asks.

“Well, ever since the practice game with them, I’ll bet they’re even better than before. Not to mention they have their third years playing too,” you reply.

“Oh yeah, they do have their third years,” Yachi remembers.

“Exactly,” you say.

“Now that you mention it, I am excited to see them play Date Tech as well,” Kiyoko says.

“Yeah, I think it’ll be cool,” you say.

You guys go back to the game and see that the score is 22-21, still in Karasuno’s favor. You certainly can’t wait to see the games. You see Yaku save the ball, and it goes to Kenma, who sets it for Lev. Lev slams the ball with his whip arm and Tanaka gets hit in the chest. The ball goes to Tsukishima, who sends the ball over to Yamamoto. The ball is given to Kenma, and he sets it for Fukunaga. Fukunaga hits the ball to the corner of Karasuno’s side of the court. Daichi is unable to reach it in time. You see the score is tied now for both teams. You then remember the water bottles. They need to be refilled before the next match. You turn to Kiyoko.

“Hey, do you want me to refill the water bottles before the match with Inarizaki?” you ask her. She looks up at you from her notebook.

“Oh, yes, I almost forgot. Do you want us to come with you?” she asks you in return. You shake your head.

“I’m okay. I think I can carry it myself. You know, cause I’m so strong,” you say, and they both laugh.

“Right, how could I forget?” Kiyoko replies. “We’ll be counting on you then.” You nod and get up from your seat to make your way to the water cases. You pick them up and head out of the gym. You pass by the second gym and see that Shiratorizawa and Johzenji are playing. Inarizaki and Seijoh are in the midst of a game as well. You continue walking to the water fountains. When you get there, you see someone from Date Tech there. It’s their third-year setter, the one who used to be the captain, Moniwa, right? His back is turned to you as he’s drinking his own water bottle. You get to the fountain and place the water in the lower part under the sink. He hears the loud slam and turns around to see you. He almost jumps as well, which makes you jump.

“Ah! Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you,” you say immediately. He puts his hands in front of himself and waves them.

“Don’t worry about it. I should’ve been paying attention,” he says. You both return to your original activities. You pick up the first bottle and unscrew the top and turn on the faucet. You begin filling the bottle up. This shouldn’t take too long, you think. “So, how’s Karasuno’s game going?” he asks you. You turn to him while still filling the water bottle up.

“It’s going well; we’re up against Nekoma right now,” you say. He gives you a friendly smile.

“Oh, really? We were up against Fukuroudani earlier, and they’re a tough team,” Moniwa says. “Their ace, Bokuto, is really talented, and so is their setter.”

“Yeah, they’re amazing,” you say and go back to the bottle to make sure it’s not overflowing. You cap the bottle and grab the next one repeating the same process from earlier.

“Yeah, all this fun at the training camp makes me remember how much fun volleyball really is,” he says.

“That’s right, you third years decided to focus on your studies instead, right?” you ask, looking at him again.

“We sure did, and I kinda regret it,” he says with a forlorn look. “I’m happy we’re here, though.”

“Me too,” you simply say. He gives you a confused look.

“Huh?” he says.

“I’m also glad that you guys are here,” you reply. He gets all red from your words.

“Oh, thank you,” he says.

“Sure thing, I think it’s more fun when everyone’s together like this,” you say, switching out the water bottle to the next one.

“Yeah, I do too,” he says. You guys are in silence now. It’s not awkward; it’s just quiet. You continue with your water routine while Moniwa is doing mental gymnastics on what to say to you next. “Hey, say, Y/N I…” he trails off.

“Hmm?” you hum and look at him. Your curious smile is killing him.

“I have something to say… it’s not easy for me to say…but the thing is…I—” he’s trying his damned hardest to say it.

“Oi! Moniwa! Our next game is starting now!” you hear Futakuchi shout from a ways away. You both look in the direction of the shouting. Moniwa curses himself when he knows he has to go.

“I guess you gotta go, but we can talk later if you want,” you say. He turns back to you with faux happiness.

“Yeah, that sounds good,” he says and goes over to Futakuchi. The two of them go off into the gym. I need to hurry up if I’m gonna get there with these all ready to go before the next match starts, you think. You speed up your routine and run back to the gym. You get there just before Karasuno’s next match with Inarizaki. You place the water on the bench and help Kiyoko and Yachi with the manager stuff. All to sit down on the bench the whole match.

“Thank you for filling the water bottles, Y/N,” Kiyoko says.

“Of course, don’t worry about it,” you reply.

You see that Kageyama is up first to serve, and like always, he does his brutal jump serve. The serve goes over to Inarizaki’s libero, and he sends it to Atsumu. Atsumu sets the ball for Ojiro. Ojiro is stuck with a triple block with Asahi, Tsukishima, and Tanaka. Asahi gets a one-touch and shouts for the team to get it. Hinata runs over to get it and hits it to Kageyama. Kageyama sets it for Daichi. Daichi spikes it over but is blocked by Suna. Suna’s block goes unmarked, with the ball falling into Karasuno’s court.

“Oh boy, it seems like Inarizaki is not playing around, are they?” you ask. Yachi is shivering with fear.

“Yeah, it seems that way,” Kiyoko says.

The following serve goes to Osamu who’s serve is almost as crazy as the other people on his team. The serve goes to Asahi, who passes it to Kageyama. Kageyama notices the blockers are on either side of the net, blocking the spikers’ way. He does a setter dump to throw everyone off. The dump hits the floor before the Inarizaki team can get to it. The boys celebrate and pat Kageyama on the back.

“Hey, that was a good setter dump just now,” you say. Kiyoko and Yachi agree with you.

The game goes on for some time, with everyone giving it their best. Kageyama has a rivalry with Atsumu, and Tsukishima has a rivalry with Suna. They find anyone to rival in the game, don’t they? You think. Inarizaki ends up taking the first set, much to Karasuno’s disappointment. You talk with the first years before the next set.

“Man, we were doing so well earlier,” Hinata pouts.

“Boke, you’re the one who’s bringing the team down,” Kageyama says. Tsukishima and Yamaguchi chuckle. You get between Hinata and Kageyama.

“Guys, guys, it’s nobody’s fault. Inarizaki’s just a hard team to beat, that’s all,” you reassure. They more or less ignore you.

“I’m not the problem, Kageyama, you are,” Hinata says over you.

“Boke! You were the one who messed up MY set because you’re so damn clumsy,” Kageyama says.

“Oh boy, this could go on for hours,” Yamaguchi says, and Tsukishima chuckles to himself.

“Guys,” you say more firmly. They all give you attention. “Come on; everything will be fine. I know you guys will pull it together and stop blaming one another. It doesn’t help anyone. You guys need to bring each other up, not down.” They all just stare at you in silence. “I mean, you know, cause you guys are a team.” They continue being quiet but look at one another.

“R-right, thank you, Y/N,” Yamaguchi says to soften the situation. You scratch your neck nervously.

“Uh, sure thing,” you say. They finish up their break and continue the match with Inarizaki. You remember as you’re sitting on the bench watching the game what Moniwa told you earlier, what he said about being at the training camp despite being a third year. It’s not that you pity him or anything. It’s quite the opposite. You’re actually happy that he gets to be here. You’ve never really given it all much thought that some third years quit. You hope that Moniwa and his team members are having fun. When you snap out of your thoughts, you notice that Karasuno is ahead, with the score being 5-3. You watch the game unfold with Karasuno still going ahead. There’s probably going to be a second set. The Inarizaki team and Karasuno team have a long back in forth during the middle of the second set. You can tell that both teams are getting a bit tired. The tiredness gets to your team, and Karasuno loses the set.

After the game, Ukai gives the team a pep talk before the next game. Kiyoko, you and Yachi set up for the next game as Inarizaki packs up and leaves the gym. You see Date Tech coming inside. When you see them, you wave out of friendliness. Of course, they all look at Moniwa before waving back to you. Moniwa gets all red before he greets you as well.

Date Tech practices while Karasuno takes a little bit of a rest. You watch as both Moniwa and Koganegawa set for their teammates. Moniwa notices you staring and gets flustered, and messes up a set for Aone. You see that Moniwa immediately starts apologizing to Aone. Aone just pats Moniwa’s shoulder to calm him down.

After the practice, the game finally starts. For most of the match, Moniwa is not playing as the setter, and instead, Koganegawa is playing. In the last bit of the second set, Moniwa is subbed in during a deuce. The set goes up, courtesy of Daichi, and goes to Sakunami. Sakunami sends it to Moniwa. Moniwa sets it for Kamasaki, and Asahi and Tanaka block it. The ball falls, but Futakuchi saves it just in time. Moniwa sends it to Aone, and Aone spikes it hard, and Daichi can’t receive it in time. The point goes to them, and Date Tech celebrates for a second.

“We’ll take it back,” Daichi says.

“Yeah,” Karasuno replies.

Kamasaki throws up the serve, and it goes to Nishinoya. Nishinoya sends it to Kageyama, and Kageyama sets it for Hinata. Hinata does a delayed spike and hits it towards Moniwa. As Moniwa is about to receive it, Koganegawa shouts something from the sidelines.

“Don’t worry, Moniwa; you’ll get it! Maybe you’ll finally get Y/N’s attention when you win,” Koganegawa shouts. Everyone just stops everything. Moniwa lets the ball fall, and everyone just stands there. After a minute, everyone looks over at you. You feel your face heat up in embarrassment. Then Date Tech’s coach shouts for the game to continue. Hinata rushes to get the ball to serve as Kiyoko and Yachi look at you. Even Mai, from across the way, gives you a look of sympathy.

“You alright?” Kiyoko asks. You think for a minute.

“Yeah, just wasn’t expecting that,” you say.

“I’ll bet,” she replies.

Eventually, the game ends with a win for Date Tech, and everyone starts to leave for dinner. As you’re packing up, Mai goes over to you.

“Hey, sorry about what happened earlier; Koganegawa sometimes can’t control what he says, you know,” Mai says. You throw your hands in front of yourself and jazz them.

“No, no, it’s alright, don’t worry,” you reply.

“Well, I just wanted to make sure that you’re okay,” she says.

“Yeah, I’m okay, just surprised that’s all,” you say.

“Yeah, I would be too,” she says. “Anyway, I gotta get going. I’ll see you later.” She runs off out of the gym as you grab your bag about to follow.

“H-hey!” someone says behind you. You turn to look to see Moniwa.

“Oh! Hey, Moniwa,” you reply awkwardly. You had a feeling you guys were going to talk about what happened, but you did not expect him to approach you so soon.

“Hey, I just wanted to talk about earlier,” he says.

“Oh, sure,” you say.

“I’m really sorry about Koganegawa; I would’ve preferred that he didn’t say that, obviously. What I mean is…I would have preferred that I say it, of course,” he says.

“Uh-huh,” you say, indicating for him to continue.

“I’m sorry that you heard about my feelings like that,” he says. “I wanted to tell you myself in a different circumstance.”

“I understand,” you say. “So, is this an okay circumstance?”

“I’m sorry?” he stops to give you a confused look.

“Is this a good time to, you know, say how you feel?” you ask. He gets all red and flustered.

“I…would you be okay with that?” he asks. You giggle.

“Well, I mean, it’s your feelings, so…” you trail off.

“You’re right, okay. Y/N, I really like you, and I have since I first saw you,” he says. You’re the flushed one now.

“F-for that long?” you ask. He nods slowly. “I didn’t realize it was that long.”

“Yeah, I’m sorry,” he says.

“Don’t be. I’m glad you told me,” you say.

“You are?” he asks, hopeful.

“Yeah, I am,” you say. “Though how we got here is definitely strange.” He laughs.

“No kidding,” he replies. “I understand if you want to reject me, though.”

“Reject you?” you ask. “Why do you think I’ll reject you?”

“Well, I mean, you don’t really know me that well, and it’s not like we’ll have a lot of time, and there’s also—” he gets cut off by you.

“Hey, Moniwa, part of dating someone is getting to know each other, right?” you ask.

“I suppose,” he replies.

“And we’ll have time, we live close by to one another, so it’ll be okay,” you say.

“I guess you’re right,” he says. Then gets surprised. “Wait, does that mean that we’re…”

“Yeah, I guess we are,” you say. “If you don’t mind, of course?”

“I…really? I would love that,” he says.

“Well, that’s good,” you say.

“Yeah, yeah, it is,” he replies.
