Gelderland gothic
Every time you visit the Veluwe you see the same old man with his sheep. The old man always has sheep, the sheep never die and the old man doesn’t ever age. You ask your Oma how long the old man has been there, she says he’s always been there and he’s always been old.
Everybody you know live in the same small house in a small village. Everybody has lived here for as long as they can remember. Their last name’s align with the village next to them, no one remembers why they left.
You walked around the Arnhem industrial centre too long, you’ll never find your way out again.
The wolves are back, back where? Don’t ask that question.
Everybody knows the German teacher at the school in your village. Everyone has always known her.
Every town has two churches, one is a church for Protestants and the other is for ghosts. The pews are never empty.
You ask your Oma why the farm fields are rustling, your Oma tells you to ignore it. Your Oma feeds the fields meat you can’t identify, the fields are satisfied. You are safe
The church is not safe, if you hear the voice of the dead priest lock yourself in the confessional.
It’s raining. It’s always raining. You can’t remember when it started raining.
“Vader why did we name a hill after the devil” “We are waiting”
Sometimes the river in the Betuwe talks to you, your mama will never let you respond “they will take you far away to the other country” she promises you
Everybody walks their dog in Solse Gat, we will always walk our dogs in Solse Gat. Nobody can remember why we aren’t supposed to walk the dog in Solse Gat. The old ladies from Putten watch you through the window, nobody lives in those houses.
There is a church and a school in the forest. Nobody knows which forest, nobody knows which school. The pious scream so loud you might find it anyway.
You go to a farm cafe. The old man with a scarred face asks you if you would like a table for four. You agree. You are the only person in the cafe.
Every hill here is called a mountain, you never correct anyone. They can hear you from the “mountains”
Don’t let yourself get too close to the sand drift in the Veluwe. The sand is hungry.
That town used to be a military town. It’s half empty, nobody lives there. It’s half full.

Newly Uncovered Roman Sanctuary Showing Life in Netherlands 1,700 Years Ago
Centuries ago, a bustling village in northern Europe with a massive sanctuary complex was the place to be for important Roman soldiers. The hustle and bustle has faded, but remnants of this vibrant ancient life are still visible, archaeologists in the Netherlands have found.
Archaeologists uncovered the nearly complete sanctuary complex in Gelderland, RAAP Archaeology said in a news release. The site, named the Herwen-Hemeling Sanctuary, is the most complete Roman complex found in the Netherlands.
The ruins of several beautifully painted temples dedicated to different gods and goddesses have been found, experts said. Roman soldiers used these temples from the first century to fourth century to place stone altars for various deities as a sign of gratitude.
Many of these stone altars had inscriptions, photos show. Piecing together fragmented altars and translating the inscriptions, researchers learned that stones had been dedicated to Hercules Magusanus, Jupiter-Serapis and Mercury, the release said.
Hercules Magusanus is a god connected to the Roman deity Hercules and a German deity of Magusanus, Marie-Louise Genèvrier wrote in a study from 1984.
Excavations of the sanctuary complex have revealed even more finds than originally expected, Broadcasting Gelderland reported on Wednesday, Dec. 21. About 80,000 artifacts have been found, archaeologist Eric Norde of RAAP Archeology told the outlet.
Archaeologists found a stone staircase leading down to a large stone well, photos show. Remnants of large sacrificial fires were also found, experts said.
Researchers also uncovered an unprecedented number of limestone sculpture fragments. Photos show one such fragment, the head of a sculpture.
Sanctuary excavations also unearthed horse harnesses, hangers for harnesses, armor pieces, and spear and lance points, the release said. Other finds included a cloak pin, jewelry, coins and 13,000 fragments of roof tiles — some with dog and pig paw prints, Broadcasting Gelderland reported and the organization said on Facebook.
Together, the complex has given archaeologists a glimpse into daily life at the 1,700-year-old Roman sanctuary.
Documenting and studying all the artifacts found at the Herwen-Hemeling Sanctuary is expected to take three to four years, Norde said.
The sanctuary was excavated during spring and summer 2022. Archaeologists began sharing their findings on social media in December and plan to continue doing so for the next two years. Follow along on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
Herwen is in the province of Gelderland, on the Netherlands-Germany border, and about 70 miles southwest of Amsterdam.

Layers of Development This sports hall (Sportcentrum Arcus in Wijchen, NL) appeals to me because of its pattern of greens. Each level is more dark green, which is a nice analogy to the development of plants: starting small and frail, in time growing higher and full of leaves. The leaves of the tree in front just started sprouting and will hopefully follow the same pattern of growth throughout this year. Architectural design by Bureau Bos in The Netherlands. An appropriate name in relation to the theme of growth, as bos is Dutch for forest. by Paul Brouns

A Perfect Mixture
This graphite pencil drawing ‘Berg en Dal – 02-11-23’ is a sort of mixture of cubism and impressionism. Less abstracted than the previous one but more cubist than the one before. That was my very aim. I’m still searching for the perfect balance between both styles. In fact, throughout the years my quest has been to prevent people from detecting a certain style. In the past I have been accused for being the new Picasso. In earlier days: “Hey, your style resembles Edward Hopper’s or Dali’s”. More than any other artist I long for creating a style to call my own, like Van Gogh or Cézanne did. My gut feeling still tells me to let both styles converge so they cancel eachother out, becoming one entirely new. What do you say? I think, it’s the only way to come up with something new.
The Very Spot
The motif is situated in Berg en Dal, Gelderland, Netherlands. At least, I guess it is. I couldn’t see it clearly on the map. I think Beek-Ubbergen is just around the corner. In fact, the very spot is at the end of the second-last path to the right from the Rijksstraatweg. There is this white house you can see behind the dominant tree. They rent it out as a vacation home. Anyway, the Duivelsberg is to the left and it’s a lovely valley that I frequently visit. Nearby I made a small drawing in 2019.
Grainy Structure
I like how the Winsor & Newton paper reacts to the Pitt Graphite Matt pencil made by Faber Castell. It’s rather grainy. When I draw a plane I can either rub it out or enjoy the ribbled structure. It favors an impressionist look but it’s still good enough for cubism though. These kinds of paper are conducive to vague contour delineations in the back. That’s something harder to achieve using Bristol paper. Its structure is rather dense and suited for fine detailing. Hence, there is a nice sketchy feel to these kinds of drawings. Don’t you agree?
