Finishing a Quotev story PT. 5: Gem Glow

yeehaww (this took too fucking long)

“Nooooo!” Steven yelled from inside the Big Donut.

“This can’t be happening!” He muttered, placing his hands on the counter that the Cookie Cat freezer sat on.

“This has to be a dream!” He brought his hands to his temples, whipping around quickly.

“Lars! Lars!” He ran over to the ginger male, wrapping his hands around his torso in a hug.

“Please tell me I’m dreaming! I wanted Onyx to finally experience the wonderfulness of a Cookie Cat!!” He wailed, slumping to the floor as Lars walked away.

“Get off me man, I’m stocking here.” Lars groaned, walking away with a box as Steven lay face down on the tile floor.

“I’m sorry, Steven. I guess they stopped making them.” Sadie tried to comfort him, leaning over the checkout counter.

“Stopped making them?!” He turned to face the blond.

“Why in the world would they stop making Cookie Cats?!”

“They’re only the most scrumptious and delicious ice-cream sandwich ever made!” He yelled in dismay.

“Don’t they have laws for this?!” Lars knelt down by a counter, reaching a hand onto the box he was carrying and putting the contents away.

“Tough bits, man. Nobody buys them anymore..”

“I guess they couldn’t compete with Lion Lickers.” He said, lifting a bag out of the box.

“Not Lion Lickers! Nobody likes them…” Steven grumbled, Onyx just walked over to the freezer that held them and grabbed a few.

“They don’t even look like lions!” He complained, flinging his arms up.

“I think they do..” Onyx bent over, looking at the popsicles behind the glass.

“Kids these days I’ll tell you what!” Steven put his hands on his hips.

“Well, if you miss your wimpy ice cream so much, why don’t you make some with your magic belly button” Lars teased, causing Onyx to turn his head to him and growl.

“That isn’t how he works, Lars..” Onyx snarled, narrowing his eyes at him as he walked to the counter to pay for his popsicles. Steven lifted his shirt up and looked at his naval, squeezing his abdomen.

“Oh sweet Cookie Cats… With your crunchy cookie outside, and your icy creamy insides.” Steven’s brows furrowed sadly as he drew a cookie cat on the outside of the freezer. Onyx shoves two Lion Lickers in his mouth, his tail starting to wag happily as he quickly ate them.

“You’re too good for this world…” Onyx looked at him funny as he kissed the freezer.

“Uh Steven?” Sadie started, looking at Steven who was hugging the freezer as Onyx ate more popsicles, not bothering to take the wrapper off.

“Do you want to take the freezer with you?” She asked as Onyx threw the sticks out in the trash. Steven nodded.

“Are you really gonna let ‘em have that?” Onyx asked, eating another Lion Licker.

“I mean, we were just gonna throw it out so I thought, why not give it to Steven?” Sadie replied, shrugging.

The boy hummed happily as he and Onyx walked back to the temple, Onyx carrying the freezer under an arm.

“Hey, guys! You won’t believe this!” Steven yelped out in surprise as a gem monster jumped on him. Onyx growled and grabbed it, slamming the centipede-like body against the floor until it poofed. He set the freezer down on a bench by the door, running off to go help.

“Sup, Steven” Amethyst called out as she wrangled a monster of her own, throwing it far over Pearl’s head. Pearl struck her spear out gracefully, throwing the monsters back. She flung three away, one to Garnet and two to Onyx. Onyx bashed the heads of the monsters together before chasing down more, arms outstretched. Garnet caught the monster Pearl threw to her and slammed it against her knee, punching more as they ran up to her. Monsters are seen running away from Onyx as he chases them, pinning them down and bringing his ax down onto them. Onyx snatched some from the walls and couch, throwing them down against the floor and jumping on them, digging his elbow into their backs.

“Awesome!” Steven grinned.

“What are these things?” Steven muttered in amazement when one went running past him, away from Onyx with his ax raised above his head.

“Ugh!” Pearl grunted.

“Sorry, Steven. We’ll get these centipeetles out of your room.” She lifted one up off the floor, wrapping her arms around it as it wriggled in her grip.

“I think they might’ve been trying to get into the temple.” Onyx explained, stomping on one.

“Aw… You don’t have to get rid of them… They’re really cool!” Steven cooed, looking at the monster as it squirmed. He winced and flinched away as the monster spat out acid at his feet, burning a large hole in the hardwood. Onyx and Amethyst both threw a monster at the stony walls, causing them to screech and poof.

“Um, you guys..” Amethyst called, causing the others to look at her.

“These things don’t have gems!” She yelled, sticking a finger in her nostril and turning to look over at Pearl and Steven. Onyx smacked at her hand, trying to get her to stop, but just causing her to pull the finger out and jab it in his direction playfully, making him yelp.

“Prolly means the momma is ‘round here.” Onyx replied, chasing another down to get away.

“We should probably find it before anyone gets hurt…” Pearl suggested.

“Ooh! Ooh! C-can I come!? Can I?! Can I?!?” Steven asked eagerly, looking up at Pearl hopefully.

“Steven..” Pearl called, making Steven turn towards her.

“Until you learn to control the powers in your gem, we’ll take care of protecting humanity, okay?” Pearl said calmly, snapping the neck of the centipeetle she was holding and dropping it to the floor.

“Aw man…” Steven sulked before turning to the kitchen to see a centipeetle rummaging through the fridge.

“Hey! Not for you! Get!” Onyx shooed the monster away, chasing it into the range of Garnet so she could deal with it properly.

“Aw… they got into everything! Not cool!” Steven groaned, looking from the contents of the fridge to Garnet punching the monster across the house.

“No way….” Steven mumbled, looking at the freezer that was filled with cookie cats.

“I-It can’t be!” He reached into the freezer and pulled on out, looking down at the treat in amazement as Pearl closed the freezer door.

“Wha- where did you get these?! I thought they stopped making them!” Steven looked up at Pearl happily as Onyx grabbed a few from the freezer and ate them, stuffing the wrappers into his mane.

“Well, we heard that, too, and since they’re your favorite..” Pearl explained with one hand on her hip.

“We went out and stole a bunch!” Amethyst yelled as she sat on the kitchen counter. Pearl grunted and glared at her, hands balled into fists by her sides.

“I went back and paid for them..” She grumbled, looking off to the side.

“The whole thing was my idea.” Garnet said calmly as she unsummoned her gauntlets.

“It was everyone’s idea.” Amethyst corrected.

“Not really.”

“All that matters is that Steven is happy.”

“Onyx! Start me off with a beat!” Steven yelled, pointing to him. Onyx shrugged and began to clap his hands and stomp his foot, chuckling to himself.

“Ohhhhhhhhhh!! He’s a frozen treat with an all new taste! ‘Cause he came to this planet from outer space!” Pearl dropped her arms and looked away then back, clearly confused.

“A refugee of an interstellar war! But now he’s at your local grocery store!” He sang as he made his way over to Garnet and Amethyst who just looked at eachother.

“Cookie Cat! He’s a pet for your tummy! Cookie Cat! He’s super duper yummy!”

“Cookie Cat! He left his family behind! Cookie Ca-a-a-a-a-a-t!!! Now available at Gergins off route 109.” He mumbled the last part before everyone started chuckling. Garnet clapped proudly and Onyx snorted.

“I can’t believe you did this! I’m gonna save these forever.” He grinned as he looked from Pearl to the ice-cream.

“Hello, old friend” Steven giggled before biting the ear of the cat, scrunching up the wrapper and also putting it into Onyx’s mane.

“Right after I eat this one.” He tore the corner of the packaging, taking out the frozen snack. Onyx grabbed another, slipping the plastic into the abyss of his mane, the area he put it in glowing red. He licked his chops and took a large bite of the ice cream.

“Ooh! So good!” Steven smiled, tossing his head back as he chewed. Onyx’s brow quirked up at a small flash of light off to his left. He looked down, seeing Steven’s gem start to glow under his shirt.

“I like to eat the ears first!” Steven said, looking up at Onyx. The gems looked at eachother, eyes widening at the glow that enveloped the room. Amethyst glanced at Garnet before turning back.

“Uh, Steven?”

“Wah? My gem!” He shouted, looking down at his naval and lifting up his shirt.

“Your weapon! Try and summon it!” Onyx yelled, eating the rest of the ice-cream quickly.

“I-I don’t know how!” The glow began to recede.

“Aah!! It’s fading!” He yelled worriedly, startling the gems.

“How do I make it come back!?” He asked, looking from gem to gem.

“Calm down, Steven.” Pearl raised her hands up.

“Breath, don’t force it.” Steven bit his bottom lip and glanced around.

“Yeah, and try not to poop yourself either” Amethyst snickered.

“Yeah… Don’t.. Don’t do that” Onyx narrowed his eyes and stepped back a little. The glow of Steven’s gem began to recede until it faded completely. They sighed and Steven slumped to the floor with a groan.

“I was really close that time” He sulked.

“Can one of you just explain how to summon a weapon?”

“Pay attention to these petals, Steven.” Pearl gestured to the petals falling from the tree behind her. A petal landed on Onyx’s muzzle and he stared at it cross-eyed before he snapped it into his mouth. He chewed and winced at the taste, spitting it out quickly.

“Oh! I’ll go first!” Pearl said in a sing-song voice, raising up her hand.

“The petal’s dance seems improvised, but it is being calculated in real time based on the physical properties of this planet.”

“With hard work and dedication, you can master the magical properties of your gem and perform your own dance!” Pearl explained eagerly. She put her hands up to her gem, quickly and elegantly summoning her spear. A petal landed in her open palm as she opened her eyes.

Steven, Onyx, and Amethyst are standing outside the Big Donut, Amethyst and Onyx eating chocolate donuts. Steven threw his handful of petals into the air, attempting to summon his weapon.

“Like so” Steven looked down at the ground and scooped a few petals into his arms.

“Did Pearl tell you guys the petal thing?” Amethyst asked, swallowing a piece of her donut.

“Mhm! I need to practice really hard so I can dance like a tree! I think…”

“Yeah, I was gonna tell him that he won’t be able to do it the way Pearl does, but I like seeing him try so hard.” Onyx whispered.

“Listen Steven.” Amethyst called out to him, taking another bite of her donut.

“All that ‘practice’ stuff is no fun. Whenever I need to summon my weapon, it just happens.” She brought a hand over to her gem and summoned her whip, smashing into a dumpster and splitting it in half.

“See? Didn’t try at all.” She shrugged and Steven scratched at his scalp. Lars came running from the backdoor of the shop.

“So, I’m supposed to work really hard and not try at all at the same time?” Steven asked, looking up at Garnet.

“Again?!” He yelled, dropping the bag of trash he was carrying.

“Yes” Garnet responded curtly.

“Or” She started as she saw Steven’s confused expression.

“You can link your mind with the energy of all existing matter channeling the collective power of the universe through your gem, which results in.” She moves her arms and body beautifully, ending the dance by summoning her gauntlets.

“Okay Onyx, how do you do it?’ Steven looked up at him from the couch in the temple.

“At least that’s my way of doin it.”

“Well, it’s a little bit of everyone’s and also, not. My dance appears improvised, it flows uncharted, but I’m choosing each step quickly and carefully like Pearl."

"It also looks like I don’t exactly try, like Amethyst. During an attack we didn’t plan for, my dance is quick and swift."

"And sometimes, I can harness the power in my mind, and channel my emotions straight through my gem to summon my weapon. Summoning a weapon is different for everybody. Pearl tries hard, Amethyst doesn’t try at all, I have no idea what Garnet does, and I try to get a feel of my emotions, but I'm still figuring it out. So, you can’t listen to me, Pearl, Amethyst, or Garnet about this because it’s unique.” Onyx explained before standing up quickly. He throws one arm out, then the other and slams his hands together, creating sparks that fly out and dwindle down against the floor. He brings his hands down to his naval before throwing them up and opening them, revealing a large black ax to Steven.

“I think my best bet is to recreate what happened the last time my gem glowed.”

“That’s so cool!” Steven exclaimed, reaching out to grab it. Onyx set the ax carefully in Steven’s hands and chuckled as he struggled to wield the heavy weapon.

“So… Garnet and Amethyst were here..” Amethyst jumped up onto the counter and Garnet crept up to her side.

“Pearl was next to the fridge, and Onyx was right over by the dishes” Steven rested his chin on a palm and looked around.

“Amethyst, I think your arms were crossed.” He pointed a finger at her, causing her to startle slightly but still cross her arms.

“Okay, your Majesty.” She teased.

“And Pearl, your foot was like this…” He adjusted her foot slightly.

“I don’t think it works this way, Steven.” Pearl said softly.

“And, Onyx! Your tail went like this!” He grabbed his tail softly, making it bend at the tip. Onyx snickered at the feeling.

“And Garnet… Uhm… Uhhh… Yeah.” Onyx laughed as Garnet just let Steven mold her face. Steven then opened the freezer and retrieved his half eaten Cookie Cat.

“Then I took a bite of this Cookie Cat!”

“Oh! You sang the song first!” Onyx reminded him.

“Oh yeah! Uh, he’s a frozen treat, all new taste, interstellar war, and now available at Gergins!”

“Aw… It was funnier last time…” Steven sulked.

“Maybe I’m not a real Crystal Gem…”

“Oh don’t be silly, Steven” Pearl tried to reassure him, sitting down with her legs under her.

“Of course you are! I think so at least.” Onyx knelt down next to him.

“And you’re fun to have around! Even if your gem is useless.” Amethyst teased, earning a growl from Onyx and a glare from Pearl.

“I-I mean, you’re one of us, Steven! We’re not the Crystal Gems without you!” She corrected. Garnet nodded quietly and placed her hands on her hips.

“Yeah.. Even if I don’t have powers, I’ve still got… Cookie Cat!” Steven yelled. Onyx burst out laughing, his tail, now engulfed in flames, lashing around.

“Mm! So good!” Steven’s gem began to glow, donning everything in pink.

“Oh my gosh..” Onyx exclaimed as a shield with the pattern of a rose with vines swirling around it was projected from his gem.

“It’s a shield! It’s gorgeous!!” He moved closer to observe the shield closer. Steven opened his mouth and gasped.

“What?! I get a shield?! Ohhhhhh yeah!” He jumped up and threw his limbs out happily. The shield shot out and bounced off the walls of the house. Onyx eagerly ran after it, leaping from wall to wall and beam to beam. He jumped once more and caught the shield in his mouth before slamming snout first into a wall and falling from the loft. Pearl groaned and shook her head, scowling as Amethyst started cackling.

“Oh! Cookie Cat! I summon my weapon by eating ice-cream!”

“No, Steven. You cannot summon your shield by eating ice-cream. It probably releases- oh nevermind, you wouldn’t understand.” Onyx tried to explain.

“What’s in these things?” Pearl muttered, picking up the wrapper from the floor. The sound of rumbling picks up and the Gems look towards one of the windows. Centipeetles of all sizes are climbing up the outside of the temple. A giant shadow crawls up the window, screaming, growling, and roaring. The shield that Onyx was holding then dissipated.

“What was that?!” Steven yelled as the gems sprinted outside.

“It’s the mother.” Garnet said quickly. She jumped up the temple, getting ready to attack as Steven looked up smiling.

“Stay in the house, Steven.” Pearl ordered.

“No way! I’m coming too!” He ran inside and grabbed multiple ice-creams from the freezer, some extension cords, and the Cookie Cat freezer. Onyx jumped onto the head of the monster, digging his claws into it to hold himself steady enough to summon his ax.

Garnet jumped in front of the beast, kicking it in the face and leading it off the cliff. Onyx yelped and latched on with his hands, hooking those claws into it as well. Amethyst and Pearl quickly followed after them, landing in front of the monster along with Onyx who leapt off.

It hissed and reeled back, spitting out acid and tearing up the earth that the gems jumped away from. Acid dripped from its mouth like drool as it whipped around to watch the gems hide behind a hand that fell from the temple. It spat out more acid, beginning to disolve the stone.

“We could really use Steven’s shield right about now!” Amethyst suggested, hiding underneath Onyx as acid began to spill out from the chinks.

“Hey!” Steven yelled, throwing a large rock at the monster’s head. He set the freezer down and rested his hand on it .

“Leave them alone!”

“Steven! No!” Yelled the gems. Onyx quickly jumped over Amethyst and ran over to Steven, skidding to a halt behind him.

“Cookie Cat crystal-combo powers, activate!” Steven yelled. Onyx looked down at him, giving him a nod of encouragement. Steven nodded back and took a bite of his ice-cream, looking up at the monster. He lifted his shirt up as he chewed, revealing his gem. He then looked down when nothing happened, confused as to why his shield was not summoning.

“Uh oh.” He dropped his shirt and picked up the freezer, gasping as Onyx lifted him up onto his shoulders and ran, just as the Centipeetle’s jaws snapped shut close behind them. Onyx skidded to a halt at Steven’s command, him on the ground along with the freezer.

“We need to save Steven!!” Pearl yelled, her expression quickly falling as the monster bit at the statue.

“Can we save ourselves first?” Amethyst asked snarkily, looking up.

“Goodbye, my friends..” Steven mumbled, eating more ice-cream.

“Steven, you’re gonna get sick..” Onyx said worriedly, patting his back.

“Why isn’t it working?!” Steven groaned, looking at the Centipeetle with a mouthful of chocolate. It roared and spat, the spray barely avoided by Onyx tackling Steven out of the way.

“Steven! Onyx!” Garnet called out to them before the monster snapped at her. She grunted as she caught the pinschers in her hands, holding them open. Onyx groaned and rolled onto his back, revealing Steven covered in dirt and sand, but unharmed. Steven gasped as he saw the freezer, broken and melted from the powerful acid.

“No! On, no, no, no, no, no, no, no!” Steven picked himself up and raced over to the freezer. He kneeled down and poked at it, earning a small shock.

“Onyx. Lift me.” He said with his eyes squeezed shut. Onyx picked him up and set him on his shoulders.

“Cookie Cat. He’s a pet for your tummy.” He sang as Onyx took a running start.

“Cookie Cat! He’s super-duper yummy!” Onyx sped up, kicking up loads of sand.

“Cookie Cat! He left his family behind!” Steven reeled his hands back, ready to throw the freezer.

“Cookie Ca-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-t!!” He swung the freezer as hard as it could, causing the monster to shriek, being electrocuted harshly.

“Now available… Nowhere..” He sulked as Onyx set him down, looking up at the scene as he dropped to his knees.

“Yes!” Amethyst yelled in amazement.

“Gems, weapons” Garnet commanded.

“Let’s do it.” Pearl and Amethyst nodded before racing off to finish the monster. The gem fell and landed in front of Onyx who bubbled it and sent it off. Steven pushed a small pile of dirt over a make-shift grave for an empty Cookie Cat wrapper.

“Farewell, sweet Cookie Cats.. I’ll always remember the time we spent together.” Steven said, beginning to tear up. He placed a leaf atop the grave and his stomach growled.

“Shh. Hush now.” He held his stomach tightly.

“Are you crying?” Amethyst asked, bending down beside him.

“Only a little!!”

“Guess that means your powers don’t come from ice-cream.” Onyx teased, ruffling Steven’s hair.

“Of course they don’t come from ice-cream.” Pearl narrowed her eyes at him.

“No need for worrying, Steven. I bet you’ll figure it out soon.”

“Yes. In your own Steveny way.” Garnet smiled down at him.

“I’m okay, guys! I just- I think I ate too many Cookie Cats..” The gems laughed and Onyx took him over to the sea to throw up.
