Maria’s Birthday (Maria Hill x Reader)

One of the many birthday posts, since according to Google, Maria’s birthday is April 4th. So I’m a little late, I was super busy with school for months. Y/F/N is your full name.

Warnings: Maria Hill x Reader, Clint Barton, Natasha meddling in the lives of others, a teensy tiny bit of angst that’s made up with fluff since I really hate angst.

Summary: After 18 months of dating Maria, Natasha realizes that you have no idea when her birthday is, embarrassment and cuddles ensue.

Many had never seen her crack even the slightest smile, especially due to Tony Stark’s antics. She was Fury’s right hand, and often his left eye. People that she was close to, like Agents Coulson, Romanoff, and Barton knew just how lame and shitty her jokes could be, as well as how vulgar. All this to be said, at work, Maria Hill was a very serious woman. Until you came along.

When Y/F/N came along and joined SHIELD, suddenly, Maria Hill could not focus. She was always distracted, which even Tony noticed on his trips on the Helicarrier, and continuously kept glancing over at you. And by glancing, I mean staring. Maria Hill, Agent of SHIELD was constantly staring at you. Like Bucky Barnes level staring, every time you were in the same room as her.

You learned after a few months of working at SHIELD, and through your childhood friend, Natasha Romanoff, that Maria was very much into women. And not into men. At all. Thank you, Nat, and drunken games of truth or dare. Oh yeah, how were you friends with Nat, you may ask? Well, dear reader, you also grew up in the Red Room, and Clint got you and Nat out in Budapest. Irregardless, Maria was very into women, and coincidentally enough, you were very into Maria.

After months of noticing that it was always Maria burning a hole into the back of your head every day when you were at work, you asked her to dinner. She accepted, and here you were, 18 months later, with no idea of when your girlfriend’s birthday was. How the fuck you had managed to get this far into the relationship without finding that out was beyond your spectre of knowledge, but it was far too late to ask.

“Y/N? You look lost in thought.” Nat said, sitting on your desk next to your laptop. “Something on your mind?” She asked.

You shrugged. “Just zoned out. Did I forget something?” You could not tell Nat that you didn’t know when Maria’s birthday is. Your best friend and your girlfriend are too close, and Maria would never let you live it down that you had never asked.

“I was just wondering what you’re getting Maria for her birthday.” She said, patting your head.

“M- Maria’s birthday? Oh, uh, I- I dunno yet. We really didn’t do much about birthdays growing up, you know that.”

“What else don’t you know about Maria’s birthday, hun?”

You scoffed, “I have no idea what you’re talking about, Nat.”

Nat leaned closer to you. “When’s Maria’s birthday?” She asked you.

Leaning back in your chair, you replied. “I’m terrible at remembering dates, you know that.”

“What’s today’s date?” She asked again.

“Uh, I think it’s April 1st, but I’m not sure.”

“When’s my birthday?”

“At some point during Sagittarius, but I think you’re a December one.”

“And Clint’s?” Yup, you were caught.

“Everyone thinks he’s a January baby, but I think he’s actually June. A June Gemini if I recall correctly.”

“So when’s Maria’s, hun?”

You looked down, blushing, and mumbled, “I dunno.”

“You really don’t?” Nat asked, rubbing your back.

“No. And I feel like the worst girlfriend in the world.” You said, tearing up. “I don’t even know when my own girlfriend’s birthday is.”

“Baby girl?” You heard from behind you.

You stood up and ran into the bedroom you shared with Maria, locking the door behind you, with tears dripping down your face. “God, I am absolutely the worst girlfriend ever,” you said, climbing under the covers and pulling them up to under your chin.

“Oh, no you don’t, kiddo.” Clint told you, dropping down from the vents and wrapping you in a hug. “There will be absolutely no self depreciation on my watch.”

“Clint.” You whined, burrowing further into his chest. “Just let me wallow, I don’t need a lecture right now.”

“You are not a bad girlfriend, Y/N. It wasn’t something you and Maria had ever talked about.” Clint told you, kissing the top of your head softly.

Maria stormed in, breaking the door as she did. “Barton, you had better get the fuck out of my bed and your hands off my girlfriend right this instant.”

“Comfort.” Clint sighed as he sat on your dresser instead.

“He’s right, Maria. You know when Y/N gets all self-deprecating, she needs a lot of comfort.” Nat agreed, leaning in the doorway.

“Sweet baby girl, I’m not mad at you.” Maria said, ignoring both of them and pulling you into a hug. Showing them the side of her you usually only got to see. “Maybe we should’ve talked about birthdays earlier on than this, but we didn’t. But why didn’t you ever check the SHIELD files? That’s what I did.”

“Check the- oh, fuck. I forgot I could.” You dropped your head onto her shoulder. “God, why didn’t I think to check the files?”

Maria rubbed your back with one hand, pulling your head up and wiping your tears with the other. “It’s okay, sweetheart. Like I said, I’m not mad.”

“Wait, so when is your birthday?” You asked softly, avoiding as much eye contact as you could.

“April 4th.”

You did some quick calculations in your head, “I wasn’t even here for your birthday last year! I was in..” you had to think about which mission you were on in early April of last year, “Madrid! Why didn’t you say anything?”

“I didn’t wanna make you feel bad. You felt bad enough about missing Easter, so I didn’t want to make things worse by telling you that you were also missing my birthday.” Maria told you, kissing you softly.

“And that’s our cue to leave.” Clint said, hopping off your dresser and dragging Nat out of the room.

“So, no more tears, love?” Maria asked, kissing your cheeks.

You nodded in agreement. “No more tears.”

“I love you, honey.”

“I love you more.”

Maria reached over and grabbed the TV remote. “You wanna keep watching Y/F/S? I think we’re a few episodes behind.” She asked, wiggling it.

You giggled at the fact that you had gotten her invested in your favourite show. “Cuddles and TV with my favourite person? Sounds good to me.”

“Me too, love.” She said, dimming the lights and starting the next episode. “Me too.”

Oh my God! Okay, I’ve had most of this done for a while, but all I needed was the ending and I could not figure it out and I couldn’t find any motivation. But avoiding housework? Always a great way to find writing motivation, right? I hope you enjoy!
