A photo of Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez smiling as House Republicans struggled to elect a Speaker for the second day in a row during Wednesday's Congress meeting went viral on social media.

The image shot by photographer Anna Moneymaker and shared on Twitter in the aftermath of the 118th Congress' second meeting, shows Ocasio-Cortez laughing as Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz—who's among the 20 defectors who voted against Kevin McCarthy's bid to become House leader—makes an impassioned speech to his fellow Republicans opposing McCarthy.

"AOC smiling in the background of the ongoing GOP dumpster fire," commented a Twitter user, comparing the image to a well-known meme of a girl standing in front of a house on fire.

"There is so much to be said about the Old Masters-style composition of this photograph by ANNA MONEYMAKER for GETTY IMAGES," lawyer Mike Godwin tweeted.

"Living vicariously through @AOC right now," wrote Gen Z activist Olivia Julianna, who last year raised over $1.5 million for abortion funds after being body-shamed by Gaetz.

Between Tuesday and Wednesday, McCarthy lost six consecutive votes, failing to gather enough support to become the Speaker of the House—a historic defeat for the Republican representative.

The opposition to McCarthy of 20 House Republicans, most of whom are hardliners and members of the ultraconservative Freedom Caucus, has paralyzed Congress and thrown the GOP into turmoil.

Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow Democrats have been accused of reveling in the chaos unfolding within the Republican Party, with Republican Representative Kat Cammack accusing Democrats of getting drunk during voting.

"Diversity of thought is a good thing," Cammack said during a speech in Congress on Wednesday. "But they want us divided. They want us to fight each other. That much has been made clear by the popcorn and blankets and alcohol that has come in over there."

Ocasio-Cortez has fought back against the accusation, writing on Twitter: "If only! If Dems took a shot every time McCarthy lost a Republican, we'd all be unconscious by now."

Congress is set to reconvene at noon on Thursday to nominate a House Speaker.

While I wouldn't read too much into Liam's reply since it just sounds like his usual banter, I'm more stunned that some lad straight up tweets to Liam that he's sure that him and his bro were sexually involved with each other back in the day. I wonder how many more people see something between Liam and Noel but wouldn't admit it

Haha! I saw this earlier and was simultaneously laughing my head off and gobsmacked at both tweeter's brazen confidence and Liam's equally brazen response! The normies are catching on! lol

I bet many people see something unusual about them, or think their obsessive behaviour is more than a little weird, but won't say it out loud (except for this guy) lol. Or they read about it online. Funnily enough, I've seen a noticeable rise in mentions of this sort of thing on Twitter and TikTok. There was even discussion about it recently on Reddit of all places.

Rumours and suspicions about Liam and Noel have always been around though, even back in the day, like really early on. I recall it being mentioned among fans as early as 1997/98, basically after Loch Lomond. Unlike Gen X, the new, younger fans that Liam is recruiting aren't likely to stick their heads in the sand and pretend Loch Lomond didn't happen, or that it was entirely normal behaviour.

We've seen the impact that younger fans have had on the Beatles fandom, questioning John and Paul's relationship (and leading to a forthcoming Lennon/McCartney biography, which is exciting!). So it'll be interesting to see if the Oasis fandom changes in a similar way with more attention being given to examining Liam and Noel's relationship beyond the usual conflict/power struggle.

I love Jared and no content will be enough for me, but these are the BEST years (kids still young, parents still around, he and Gen are young enough to be active with kids and parents together), Gen is his very real rock & his family is that rare thing called tightly knit, and I'm overjoyed he's choosing to make memories every day surrounded by these wonderful people's unconditional love. I will never forget the picture he tweeted after we nearly lost him. It was Gen and Tom and Shep and their dog crouched on a raft or boat on a lake, all of them looking at the water, and she was framed beautifully, and he captioned it "Happiness: found". He deserves the world. He's given us so MUCH in terms of taking Sam's story super seriously (but not himself), speaking out for mental health & against the stigma, and giving so much of his limited mental health resources to fans at cons & elsewhere. He's never mocked even the eccentric fans, he has held up when ppl dumped trauma on him even though he's already struggling every single day. He has done and continues to do so much. He deserves the WORLD & knowing he's living amidst the people who really love him warms my heart and makes up for any decrease in content. I love Walker for the story but more for the fact that he broke away from the SPN abuse and now gets to work in his town, with ppl like Keegan and Mitch who speak adoringly (and rightly so) of him. He deserves everything good this world could offer. I love him so much and I hope he continues to conquer mental illness -- that's what he called us (ppl with mental illness) years ago, conquerors. So yeah, if he wants to cut back, I support him 100%.

USAF's first female fighter pilot retires

The career of an Air Force pioneer came to an end this weekend, when Maj. Gen. Jeannie M. Leavitt, the first female fighter pilot of the U.S. Air Force (USAF), retired after 31 years of military career.

Leavitt's retirement ceremony took place at Scott Air Base, Illinois, on September 23. The head of the U.S. Transportation Command, General Jacqueline D. Van Ovost - one of the only three women who have ever led a command of a combat squad - officiated and reminded all those present of the legacy that Leavitt created.

“[Jeannie] had to deal with a constant demand to be in the spotlight, because of her many premieres, something that does not represent who Jeannie is,” Van Ovost said. "She prefers to stay behind, behind the scenes to guide and educate. Taking care of people and the mission - [this is] the true purpose behind his continuous dedication to service."

Leavitt's journey in the U.S. Air Force was, in fact, marked by numerous "innovations", challenging preconceived notions about the roles that women could play in the armed forces. She was the first woman to join USAF fighter pilot training in 1993. Later, she made history as the first female fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force. She was also the first woman to command a combat fighter wing, the 57ª Wing at Nellis Air Base, Nevada.

Throughout her career, she has accumulated more than 3,000 flight hours, including operational missions such as Southern Watch, Northern Watch, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Most of his experience was on the F-15E Strike Eagle.

Van Ovost reflected on the obstacles encountered by women in combat functions during the early 1990s, noting that simply changing policies was not enough. Gaining acceptance and recognition were separate struggles, she added, and Leavitt played a key role during a period of significant change, breaking down barriers that had long kept women out of combat pilot roles.

Throughout her career, Leavitt was a strong advocate for women in aviation and encouraged young women to pursue careers in the Air Force and aviation - four of these pilots appeared in a tribute video during the ceremony.

His commitment to challenging stereotypes went beyond the military, as he collaborated with Disney on the film 'Captain Marvel' to narrate his journey in the U.S. Air Force and share a more accurate portrait of a lifetime dedicated to service. However, Leavitt's aspirations were never just about personal fulfillment, Van Ovost said.

"On behalf of all those who have traveled by your side and behind you, thank you for having the courageous character necessary to open new paths for others to follow," said Van Ovost.

Leavitt's final mission was as head of the Air Force Security Center, overseeing the entire program and policy of aviation, occupational, weapons, space and accident prevention and nuclear safety system of the Air Force Department.

What inspired you to start Where The Dead Forget? Also can you tell us some more about your PZA Dreamers AU? (e.g. what your favourite thing to write has been so far, things you look forward to or struggle with, or anything else you like). Thanks!

As for WTDF, honestly it pretty much all started with this tweet where I expressed interest in the concept of Patroclus Hadesgame losing his memories. I had seen such fanarts already so I was curious if there were fics out there too (there are of course! I have since found some, lol!) But a friend in the comments was encouraging to the notion of me writing one myself and I pretty much immediately began spiraling from there (I tweeted this the same day I posted Once More and also about a week before I posted Upon A Lazy Bed, so at the time my brain was on fire and I was constantly brimming with ideas!) The entire story from beginning to end pretty much came to me immediately and I’ve been expanding on it ever since! A lot of my inspiration has been fueled by the experience of consuming every depiction of Achilles & Patroclus I could get my hands on, as well as countless academic writings with various analyses on the characters. Also just the entire meta tradition of storytelling with folklore characters in general, where there’s no one “definitive version”, and thinking about how that might work in-universe where things like memories, bias, human fallibility, etc make objective truth difficult or impossible to obtain. Films such as Rashomon and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind that explore similar concepts to WTDF also inspired me!

As for the PZA Dreamers AU!! I can’t remember if I’ve ever properly explained the concept in a public post but for anyone curious: the whole thing was born out of me seeing a parallel/synergy between the themes of the film The Dreamers and certain interpretations of the Iliad (the Homeric version itself ofc but also particularly Shakespeare’s Troilus & Cressida.) The characters in these stories exist in this symbolic & narrative liminal space where they’re shutting themselves off from the outside world so they can Live Laugh Love—and in all the stories, reality catches up with them eventually, usually in tragic ways. I’m making it a modern AU (a vaguely 2010s period piece?) because as a millennial I also see parallels to my generation (& Gen Z) where as a whole our own lives also seem to be stuck in a figurative liminal space academically, economically, socially (especially in the era of covid where we were all shut-up in our houses finding there was more to life than The Grind, simultaneously reveling in simple pleasures & also going insane until we were all forced back out again) And at the same time our generations have this fascination with liminal spaces as an Internet meme (including vaporwave which also coincidentally appropriates classical Greco-Roman imagery in its aesthetics.) I’m reading serious non-fiction books like Capitalist Realism by Mark Fisher and Retromania by Simon Reynolds in service of what at the end of the day is just a horny fanfic LMFAO.

Because getting back on track to what you actually asked me: I’m not gonna lie, my favorite parts of writing this story so far have been the sex scenes, haha. Like the whole vibe of the story is supposed to be just this completely unfettered dreamy indulgence, and even things like sex have a liminal quality to me (where time seems to stand still and people are joined together transitioning through several physical states) hopefully I’ll be able to pull the whole thing off the way I’m envisioning it! The fact that it’s a modern AU is probably what makes this both easier and harder to write—things like dialogue can have a more modern sensibility but it’s probably the more flowery prose that’s giving WTDF its own dreamy, liminal quality so it’s tricky figuring out how to balance it. I’m also having a hard time deciding whether I want to dump this entire high-concept, novella-length story as a one-shot (or at least split up into 2-3 parts that are published all at once) or if I should stick to a more traditional (for fanfic) serialized publication schedule ahahaha. I guess if anyone reading this has any preferences or insight feel free to let me know your thoughts!

Oh and as for the PZA of it all: writing Closest To My Heart was probably what reminded me of the existence of The Dreamers in the first place (I had seen it years and years ago) because I realized that film has a similar dynamic of an “outsider” falling into an erotic triangle with a pair who are essentially soulmates, and ends up biting off a little more than he can chew in keeping up with the two of them… I decided I wasn’t quite done exploring that dynamic and I wanted to write about it more! Though don’t worry, I don’t think this story is gonna be quite as dark as Closest (uh oh wait this might be a lie actually), and also Patrochilles are MUCH nicer to Zag in this story ;)

(Also I didn’t even mention Hadesgame itself where the entire underworld is a liminal space Zagreus passes through to reach the surface/self-actualization and how he is constantly dying/resurrecting… Zagreus is a very liminal character! But this is already an ETA so I shall leave my thoughts there for now, lol.)

Only ever completely professional band stuff

The BIGGEST promotional tease under the sun istg

None can escape Robaire's professionalism

He sends 4*townies into the biggest panics

He will get 4*TOWN trending within 5 minutes over an ambiguous caption and if that isn't promotion idk wtf is

He also reposts fan works,, whether it be covers of their songs or fan art or writing

Robaire loves that stuff,, he loves that people feel able to use them to express their own creativity

He wants to encourage that creativity and see it prosper

Another thing Ro will do is host qna's

He'll send out a post asking for questions

He always replies to ask many as possible but sometimes the amount of replies is just too much

Robaire likes seeing what people think of him and the band

A fair few questions are about how the band started out and he loves answering those questions the most

They're probably his favourite kind

Ro just finds it so cool that people now come to him for advice on how to start out as a musician

People just like who he used to be

The interactions, the real, organic, non-set up ones are what Ro loves about social media

He can connect with the 4*townies in a way he never could before

That connection means everything to him

Tae Young - Online Gremlin

Like Robaire,, Tae also sends 4*townies into frenzies over promotional content..

Unlike him, however, Tae Young posts unapproved spoilers to his account

He literally is the leak

The mindset is to leak the stuff before anyone else can so at least they're in control

He doesn't leak anything professional either,, only short acoustic snippets or lyric run-throughs

But as I've mentioned before, Tae takes loads of mugs of the other members

And where else would he post them but on his public feed ??

The guys hate him, the 4*townies love him

And hey, fair's fair, Tae will post unflattering pics of himself too

But everyone knows it's a good day when Tae posts because chances are he'll have some more meme-worthy content of the boys ready to be edited to hell and back

Sometimes Tae will repost the other members posts with hate comments

Any post of Jesse's is getting riddled with "old" immediately

He loves to do those fairy comments too, only to the other members though

Tae is probably the most interactive with fans tbh

Even more than Robaire

He'll just starts conversations with 4*townies in the comments, sometimes it's weird drama, sometimes it's a very thorough analysis of a Shakespearean play

If anyone thought T and Z were chaotic they are not ready for Tae Young and his page of horrors

I have nothing against millennials as a generation of young-ish adults, but I hate all things “millennial” as a style of marketing and workplace management. I hate the idea of a professional zoom call making everyone introduce themselves using by name, pronouns, and Hogwarts House. I hate the carefully vetted vulgarities of greeting cards that say “shit happens” and “happy birthday bitch,” making something as cathartic as swearing look try-hard and dorky. I hate how “self care” with regard to mental health became a euphemism for buying Lush products and posting the “treat yo self” gif from Parks and Rec. I hate that the stereotypical millennial “dream job” is to be overworked and surveilled in a tech office that happens to include a cereal bar and bean bag chairs. Gen z is hostile to this branding because they don’t relate to it, but really hardly anyone does. It’s all about acknowledging on a superficial level that things are hard and not getting better, but feeling powerless to do anything about it beyond tweeting “the struggle bus is real.” Mark Fisher Capitalist Realism moment.

At the time of this writing, of the 16 members of Minegishi Team 4 who were promoted on August 24th, 2013, 4 remain. And by March of next year, that number will be down to 2. I left the fandom in around 2019. The state of the management (which I won't elaborate on here, but you probably know...), combined with starting a new career in a new timezone led to me calling it quits as a 48G fan.

Okada Nana's graduation was a wakeup call to me though, that my beloved 13th gen had very little time left. So I returned briefly to the fandom in April 2023, to see the conclusion of their story. I discovered that so much had changed, much more than I could list here. But for one thing, I discovered that in my absence my kamioshi, Kitazawa Saki, had gone from being a struggling theater girl, to a full fledged stage actress! Joining an agency and becoming so busy that she was rarely in the theater! I was so proud. And it was not a moment too soon that I returned, because 2 months later, Saki announced her graduation. I got a chance to speak to her once at an online hanashikai. And then, in the greatest stroke of luck of my entire otaku existence, I was able to go to Japan to see her graduation stage in person. It was an experience I'll never forget.

As the 13th gen's time comes to a close, it is time for me to formally exit from the fandom as well. Saho and Yuiri remain for now, but I'm more interested in their activities outside the group.

In addition to tonight being 4'stylephilosophy's 10th anniversary, tonight is also the 9th anniversary of Takashima Yurina's graduation, my original kami oshi. I always found that coincidence remarkable. So even if it's only meaningful to me, this feels fitting.

I'll continue to follow the careers of some of my favorites from back then. Particularly Saki, Ayanan, Saho, Fukuoka Seina, Ino Miyabi, and Goto Moe, as well as Ishiwata Sena and Takahashi Ayane who I discovered more recently. I hope to see as many as I can in person someday too (already making plans to see one of Saki's stage plays sometime next year!), but it will no longer be as an AKB fan.

It was a fun 11 years but all things must come to an end. I'll still be on twitter, but for the most part my interests have shifted to following a certain pair of demon guard dogs (BAU BAU).

To all of those I called friends over the years, I'll always cherish the memories we shared.

However, seeing how far the members came in these 10+ years, I can say that which was truly important was a success.

going thru a bout of depression just makes me hate depression-centric "mental health awareness" even more than normal. cause why is the pinnacle example of ~mental illness struggles~ to some people just "uhm one time I told someone that I have depression.... and they said... I don't look depressed 😳 no one understand my pain 😔"??? cool! can't relate! worst depression-specific struggle for me is when I desperately need to destroy something with my fists or perhaps with a piece of metal if I'm wanting to bludgeon (and I do.
