This is a culture blog for trans people!
Meaning everyone who is under the trans umbrella (or can be under the trans umbrella: trans men and women, nonbinary people, xenogenders, questioning people, anyone not cis or who think they aren't cis). Also cis people you are welcome to like, reblog, follow but please don't hijack posts. I don't gatekeep here, just everyone be respectful of each other.
So how does it work?
Send in an ask or submission that starts off with: "x culture is". x being trans, non-binary, gender queer, agender... Be as general or spasific as you want. Then add in anything you like having to do with being trans.
Then I'll post the submissions!
Please don't use "nb" when you mean non-binary (it originally meant non black, and shouldn't be used in this context)
Wait aren't there blogs like this already?
There are some general trans/enby culture blogs, but they haven't been active in years, so I'm stepping in to the void.
This blog is inspired by other culture blogs:
@aro-culture-is, @ace-culture-is, @ndcultureis, @depression-culture-is, @gnc-culture-is, @apl-culture-is, @nonamorous-culture-is, @demi-alterous-culture-is, @demigirl-culture-is, @demigender-culture-is, @queercutlureis, @questioning-aspec-culture-is, @autigender-culture-is, @neopronoun-user-culture-is, @genderqueer-culture-is, @genderqueercultureis, @aspec-culture, @no-empathy-culture-is, @disassociation-culture-is
Lists of culture blogs:
part 1: orientations and general queerness
part 2: gender identities + intersex
part 3: neurodivergency
My main blog: @it-is-only-a-novel
DNI: the usual, I don't hesitate to block.

Hey... do you have any advice on figuring out gender? I'm really confused.
I'm afab, and I'm comfortable being seen as a girl. But I also feel equally as comfortable being perceived as nonbinary, and I legitimately don't think I would feel any different if everyone in my life switched to using they/them pronouns for me. Really I don't feel uncomfortable with any identity except male or masculine pronouns and/or terms.
But I'm really confused, because no label feels right? Like I feel comfortable being called female, a girl, nonbinary, etc. But if I call myself any of those things I feel wrong, like I'm lying. I don't understand 😭
I like labels. I like being able to know that how I feel has a name. It makes it seem more real, if that makes sense. But I can't find any labels that work for this aspect of me, and I don't like it. I'm so confused, surely someone has felt at least similar to this? Right? I'm not alone??
oh my dear one, i promise you that you are not alone! i have felt the entirely same way and i must admit it is reassuring to find others find the process the same!
first of all, i think it’s really important to remember when questioning your gender or sexuality, that genuinely cis het people do not experience this questioning. the reason they are cis het is because they feel entirely comfortable and sure in that identity. if you are in any capacity wondering if those things don’t apply to you, then it’s certainly something worth pursuing! so, no you are not lying or pretending.
secondly, there’s no harm whatsoever in trying something out and deciding it’s not for you! if you want to try a different name, different clothes, different pronouns etc, it’s not going to matter if you decide later you’d like to stop.
the way i started was just asking a group of close friends to try different pronouns for me, only when we were together. i found i was positively giddy when i people used them, it was so affirming! i began experimenting with my dress, makeup, even the way i spoke and i found leaning into who i was with less emphasis on my assigned gender at birth was so exciting and made me feel just about a billion times more confident.
what if you don’t have a group of people you trust to try this with?
well, something i don’t see talked about enough is changing the pronouns you use to refer to yourself. for example, i often find myself telling stories about myself where i have to use pronouns. try switching them here and see if it feels right. you can also try pronoun dressing rooms online. you can also try things out in the safe anonymity of online spaces such as this.
now, as for labels. i’ve now reached a point where that doesn’t matter so much to me. personally, i feel my gender is most closely tied to my lesbianism. if it feels important to you to have a label, there are so many genderqueer labels that might describe how you feel. i can’t tell you what that will be unfortunately, but you might like to look into gender fluidity, being a nonbinary woman (ie. woman aligned), genderqueer, genderflux etc. but rest assured, your identity is just as real without labels. we have a tendency to box things in. maybe this isn’t meant to be neatly packaged.
finally, sometimes what you know can feel most comfortable because it’s what you’re used to. listen to that part of you that is questioning and follow it as far as it would like to go. if it leads you nowhere, that’s okay and you can turn back, but it might take you somewhere completely wonderful that helps you find where it was supposed to be all along!
good luck and please feel free to keep me in the loop in your journey! very proud of you for having the courage to question 💛

The fun thing about gender skipping around is that every so often my gender, my expression, and my body all line up, and then I’m just walking around like ‘oh what’s that? Well it’s not my fault that I’ve got great tits AND fits, so…’ and I’m right

Evolution
I have recently come to realize that I’m at a stage in life where I find myself attracted to a literary genre I never held any interest in: realism.
Or rather, realism with wondrous things sprinkled in.
Tumblr media
Specially like that presented in Japanese literature.
What I’m really looking for I think, is connection. Being able to relate to the story to a deeper level than the fantasy stories I used to be so obsessed with (which no offense, but are usually not written to relate with anyone. YA Fantasy writing tends to be bleak when it comes to the relatable side of things).
I am touched by stories about people struggling through life’s bumps, pushing through as they find connections with others and hope in the little things; perhaps lessons they learned as children and forgot as they aged, or perhaps in magical wonders they encounter.
Slice of life stories are specially entertaining to me now. Broken as I am, there’s a part of me that lights up with stories I can empathize with. It stitches me up a bit inside. Helps hold me together.
There are so many books of this kind I wanna read. Stories that can warm me inside and hold my stitches together.
I never thought I’d become interested in realism (after, you know, literally living through it).
Guess a point comes where you just wanna know you’re not the only one in pain.

Today's gender is.... feeling trans but not feeling trans at the same time? It's confusing (sob)
Like MY GOD I feel so trans some days but other days it's j
It is confusing, and that's okay, darling. It can be a big think to try and figure out, especially since humans never really live in a constant state of being. We're constantly changing and growing and adapting. And sometimes gender can reflect that.
Remember it's okay to take a break from the labels if you need to. That's why a lot of us like to use "catch all umbrella terms" sometimes, such as queer. Honestly, trans technically is an umbrella term for not cis. That's literally what the white stripe on the flag is supposed to represent. There's also terms like gender flux to refer to going between two or more genders, of feeling more than one gender at once.
Remember that self discovery isn't a race, darling. I didn't figure half my shit out until I was 29, and am honestly still actively figuring it out. And that's okay. The goal should always be your own comfort.

Why the omegaverse exploded in popularity
I recently read a comment on ao3 about omegaverse being problematic for ‘degaying’ homosexual relationships by adding female characteristics to male characters.
So rather than leave a comment no one is going to read, I’d make a tumblr post no one is going to read.
The omegaverse lets people explore NON-BINARY relationships. It is not about erasing homosexuality anymore than slash fix is about erasing heterosexuality.
I am willing to bet many people do not even realise that they are non binary as there is such little representation in media of non-binary or intersex relationships in media.
But in omegaverse it’s all over the place. Fandom helps people explore things that isn’t covered in mainstream media.
I’m sure some savvy internet detective can investigate which fandoms it spread across at what rate, but I believe the reason that it continues to grow is that it is showing people things they’re seeing for the first time.
As a person who identifies as non binary it’s been a positively amazing experience coming to terms with not having the physical body I want, but can experience through fandom.

Fever Ray, Radical Romantics
New music Wednesday
With a unique spin on dusky electro-rock, the third album by the Swedish experimental musician examines love as something strange and erotic. There is enough detail, emotion, and vigor in the production to keep us waiting for the next album.

Gender in STEM notation
Some of my friends are girlflux (not the one you're thinking of):
Tumblr media
Their gender flux density varies over space (and time) within themselves, but from outside the surface the net flux is feminine.
Some of my friends are genderfluid between many non-binary genders, but following specific transition rules and paths:
Tumblr media
You might even need to go through a few intermediate genders to get to the one you intend to synthesize!
Some of my friends are in ternary superposition between masculine, null, and feminine with no in-between:
Tumblr media
The chance of observing them in each of those states is (1/√3)² = ⅓.
Some of my friends are perfectly comfortable fitting into one binary gender identity, and that's fine too! Everyone has their own them-ness.
I just hope I've managed to put something into words/notation that you've been struggling to find a way to express. Add your own expression if you come up with one!
