I (very nonbinary) am currently in a position where I need to choose between working with “girls and nonbinary youth” and “boys and nonbinary youth” this upcoming summer at a camp. While the camp is trying to integrate genders, they have had lots of pushback from parents and so their current solution is that camp is like kind of separate but not really… it’s complicated. Current things impacting my decision(these are all generalizations): boys* are stinky, girls* are dramatic, boys* are chaotic, girls* are chaotic.. but differently, boys*

Things to note: I am being given the choice by administration as to where I feel most comfortable and they have extremely thorough gender inclusion policies. I have no doubt that I will be supported with whatever decision I make.

TLDR I am looking for advice for being a nonbinary sleep away camp councilor and deciding where to work.

after ray totally blows a date (again? it feels like “again” with him) and he’s lamenting about it, fraser offers to bring back an old friend to help ray up his game and spruce up his moves.

cue the return of ms. fraser, classy, demure, and one hell of a knock out (literally and metaphorically), whom ray is to take out on the town so that she can provide feedback on his manners and technique with women.

this is a first for ray: going out with a lady with the intention to woo her but without the pressure to succeed, intimacy with a woman who isn’t a blood relation. also, an opportunity to be both the better man no one but Benny (and maybe Ma, when she’s feeling sentimental at the holidays) believe him to be, as well as a chance to be vulnerable with a friend in a way he rarely gets to be (we love toxic masculinity!).

meanwhile, fraser gets to let loose a little bit. he might still be wearing a mask, but ms. fraser can do and say and feel things that a Constable of the RCMP could never allow. and ms. fraser likes the detective, whom she can tease and correct in a way that doesn’t carry with it some of the implicit moral judgement that comes with the same comments from the Mountie. and benny maybe gets to see a bit of ray that is usually hidden away, hard to suss out on the mean streets of chicago.

THEN EVERYONE GETS WEIRD AND GAY ABOUT IT AND THEN THEY MAKE OUT AND MORE GAY SHIT HAPPENS. THE END.

Okay but can we talk about gender and desirability? Since I've started my journey of self-discovery and becoming more and more of a total gender fuck, I feel like I'm becoming less and less desirable.

And I'm not even talking about dating cishet people. It's quite the opposite, actually: the genre of people who I attract most are cishet men, because I'm perceived as ~womanly~ enough for them to find me intriguing, but to them, I'm still not quite a threat to their heterosexual identity - to them, I'm merely an exotic trophy in the collection of people they fucked, if you will.

The queers (esp. other trans people), on the other hand, totally recognize my transness and generally perceive me as a trans person. Which is technically a good thing as it feels really validating to me, and knowing that I'm perceived as trans in some contexts is at least a small source of gender euphoria for me.

However, I still fail to do gender right, even in queer contexts. Specifically in the context of (queer) dating. I feel like my gender hinders me from being anyone's 'preference' - for people who prefer butches, I'm not masculine enough. For people who prefer femmes (which I genereally identify as), I don't perform femininity coherent enough. My gender performance is deeply flawed, from whichever angle you look at it.

And in dating, this leads to me feeling like I either fall through the grid completely or I'm just some trophy. And that shit hurts. The gender binary and the social compulsion to reproduce gender as a coherent, fixed entity hurt me so much. I simply can't do it. I can't be perfect anymore. And thus, I can't be desired.
