A new study shows that female academics are significantly underrepresented in winning academic prizes and having awards named after them. Analysis of nearly 9,000 awardees and 346 scientific prizes and medals published in Nature Human Behaviour has found that men win eight prizes for every one won by a woman if the award is named after a man. These awards represent almost two-thirds of all scientific prizes. Female academics are, however, more likely to win awards that have been named after other notable female scientists, with 47% of those awards going to women and 53% to men. Dr. Katja Gehmlich, Associate Professor in the Institute of Cardiovascular Science at the University of Birmingham and joint lead author of the study, said, "The gender gap between awardees in scientific prizes is sadly a product of a long, systematic issue of poor representation of women in sciences. Despite decades of efforts to rebalance this issue, our study shows that women are still poorly recognized for their scientific contributions, and men are far more likely to win prizes and awards, in particular, if those awards are named after other men.

President Biden has opened up a 6 point lead in a hypothetical head-to-head match-up with former President Trump, new polling shows, amid signs of a growing gender gap in support for the two party front-runners.  A new Quinnipiac University national poll found Biden with 50 percent support among registered voters, ahead of Trump’s 44 percent.  That’s a shift in the incumbent’s favor from December, when Quinnipiac found the same Biden-Trump hypothetical “too close to call,” with Biden at 47 percent support and Trump at 46 percent.  Biden also scored majority support among independents in the latest findings, with 52 percent support to Trump’s 40 percent. The poll additionally found a growing gender gap when it comes to support for the current and former presidents as they each run for a second White House term. Fifty-eight percent of women say they support Biden, up from 53 percent in December.  At the same time, 53 percent of men say they support Trump, “largely unchanged” from 51 percent in December.

Natalie has pinpointed a trend: Young women are becoming ideologically more liberal, creating a stark contrast between themselves and young men, whose views are not changing in kind. According to a recent Gallup poll, only 25% of men between the ages of 18 and 29 identify as politically liberal, while 40% of women in the same age group do. The poll found that more young women identify as liberal today than in 1999, while the rate of young men identifying the same way has mostly stayed the same. This poll comes as young men’s interest in certain right-wing figures like Andrew Tate, a self-proclaimed misogynist, grows. And, as Natalie points out, this difference in opinion is manifesting on dating apps. Even if politics weren’t explicitly discussed on a date, they were hinted at when talking about common first-date topics like work-life balance; Tyler believes his future wife shouldn’t have to work if she doesn’t want to, which could indicate his conservative political leanings.

I cannot say enough that this book (The Authority Gap by Mary Ann Sieghart) is one of the most brilliant and jaw dropping thesis’ I have ever read. Ms. Sieghart wastes no time getting into the nitty-gritty of it, even the introduction holds no punches. She’s concise, efficient, and incredibly intelligent, which show’s prominently in her book.

I can’t recommend it enough.

Existing literature associates a higher share of women in politics with lower corruption; honesty is viewed as an inherent or static character trait.

However, using information collected from 400 elected gram panchayat members in West Bengal, this study finds that spending time in office changes this – inexperienced women politicians are less likely to be dishonest than men, but this ‘gender gap’ disappears among experienced politicians. The study attributes this to reduced risk aversion and stronger political networks with experience.

Why I hate social medias algorithms, and why they're bad for mental health (in my opinion)

Tumblr doesn't really count, 'cause it can push popular fandoms, memes and whatnot. The big problem comes with the algorithm looking at trauma that the viewer finds relatable and going, "you know what? You liked this joke/revenge post/ about no one believing in this person's abilities, let me show you more".

It's even worse if the viewer is someone without an active social life; 'cause then they start being flooded with posts and remarks that a creator made to vent ( to put a bad feeling into something you can share, THEN go on with your life with its ups and downs), and it starts feeling like the only reality.

A couple of examples:

You'd like to get a degree in STEM (doesn't matter which kind), and you find a joke about a PhD lab not having any money. It's true, what a relatable scenario, lol, yada yada yada. Then you start getting info about all kinds of bad experiences, low income, sexism, or racism. And DON'T GET ME WRONG, it's there, but there's also a better, nicer side that you rarely get to see online, or that sticks with you less than the bad experience.

If you have an eating disorder, chances are you'll use social medias to look for ways to care about your mental health, to look for stories similar to your own. And of course you're going to find food schedules, or fitness plans; so the algorithm will start giving you more, and even if they make you uncomfortable you're gonna look at them 'cause breaking a vicious cycle of comparing to others is hard.

As a woman in the workplace, you're gonna like and relate to other women's stories of injustice (rightfully so), untill you'll be having the constant buzz in your brain that someone will undermine you from the very beginning.

It counts for every minority, for every little thing that can upset you.

Worst part THERE IS NEVER A SOLUTION. The algorithm will show you RIGHTEOUS complaints, one after the other, and NEVER show you the other side.

In my country public research scientists get paid a misery? Show me the private lab job that can make me do what I love and pay me well.

I feel like the gender gap of pay is too big, is there anywhere else I could apply for a job?

How can I be assertive in the workplace? Where can I get help if the situation starts to spiral down?

The algorithm (especially to young adults and late teens) has this huge power to put you down, to give you false expectations because we tend to see the worst side of things as the "crude reality".

And every time you. Will. Look. At. It.

Doesn't matter how discouraged you are. The algorithm doesn't realize when it's pushing onto you something toxic. And between a meme and a video of an Indian guy building a pool, you'll find the short, the image, or the text that WILL be relatable to you, WILL make you doubt your choices and WILL give you a distorted view of reality.

Take it from me. When I started uni after covid I was convinced I wouldn't make it for this and that; that I'd never get a chance at a decent job, that I'd be criticized for god knows what trivial idiosyncrasy.

Spoiler alert: it didn't happen. It wasn't a walk in the park, but it didn't get even close to the total obliteration that social medias had prepared me to.
