Let's talk about Taemin and Key of SHINee wearing the Scottish fashion house Charles Jeffrey Loverboy, an openly queer unisex brand. There’s a lot of talk about whether idols know who they are wearing and, when relevant, do they understand the meaning of what they are wearing. We know there are clear examples of artists not understanding what they’re wearing. Indeed, 23-year-old, non-English-speaking Taemin admitted in 2021 that he had no idea the fly of his pants read “Open Here” during View era. Yet, a lot has changed this 2015/16. Taemin’s English is quite proficient. And what about Key, who has studied English since he was a child? I think we can consider understanding the words and understanding the context or broader meaning behind words or, as the case may be, symbols, which can be universal.

The Charles Jeffrey Loverboy brand is no ordinary brand. It’s a spunky, fun and edgy unisex brand with genuine British flavour. From London Fashion Week's write up:

"Looking back to look forward, the collections re-render historical references as intrinsically modern while paying respect to an ancestral line-up of costumiers, performance artists and queer icons. Jeffrey’s nightlife-influenced thirst for experimentation, and belief in the validity of mistakes, result in a colourful tension between control and chaos.

"LOVERBOY’s roots are fixed in London’s queer nightlife scene, having been born in 2014 as both a fashion label and a cult club night. The LOVERBOY parties, first staged while Jeffrey was studying for his Masters in fashion design at Central St Martins in London, were attended by the city’s up-and-coming artists, performers, musicians, drag queens and poets, many of whom became Jeffrey’s future muses and creative collaborators."

The tartan in these looks is known as the loverboy tartan. In the current collection, they have an “odorable” loverboy tartan raincoat with giant floppy bunny ears. I’m too lazy to link it, but do look it up and peruse the punk-meets-whimsy items on the website.

Taemin’s stylist for Advice was Kim Wook. You can read an interview with Kim Wook in translation here. Wook talks about he and Taemin wanting to do something impactful before Taemin entered the military, and they settled on working with silhouettes that are usually seen on female dancers. I could do a whole post on Taemin’s styling for Advice (maybe I will!), but to connect things back to the brand at hand, the flamboyantly unisex Loverboy brand seems to be at home with the goal of Advice’s styling. Advice was Taemin’s way of saying “I will go my own way and trust myself over others,” and I don’t think the androgynous or even gender-fluid looks he presented are a coincidence; Wook’s interview shows that it isn’t. These looks feel like a push forward for Taemin, and he’s been clear in saying Advice was a breakaway from his past. Act I and Act II were leading to this moment.

Taemin has been wearing Charles Jeffery Loverboy upon in return in 2023. I think the most significant choice is the non-binary shirt he wore a fan meeting during Hard era. The t-shirt is a jab at conservatives’ obsession with the love lives and indeed, bathroom usage, of LGBT+, saying, “They’re happy and satisfied. Are you?” There is a also a good-sized, unmistakable non-binary symbol on the shirt. I hadn’t seen this symbol before but it was still easy for me to comprehend. As an artist who is increasingly wearing gender-fluid outfits, it is likely a conscious choice to wear a shirt that supports non-binary rights.

Now, we can’t forget fashion-forward, English king Key in all of this. Key has always had a love and fascination with fashion; we saw in One Fine Day his interaction with a local London fashion brands. He’s a man who knows his fashion houses, so it seems unlikely he wouldn’t know about the Loverboy brand or its ethos as a unisex brand.

Key primarily wore Charles Jeffrey Loverboy accessories for his Gasoline promotions in 2022. The adorable hat with ears is statement wrapped in cuteness, that speaks to the camp motif present in both Key’s body of work and the Loverboy label’s. It’s cute, but not too cute. It’s loud but soft, and the Loverboy stamp is there for all to see. I think that Key embodies what LSF wrote about the Lovery label as “a colourful tension between control and chaos.” Key is never afraid to experiment, and he can go from creating iconic androgynous silhouettes reminiscent of ancient gods and Beyoncé to the retro-camp shown below that almost looks like it could be at home in a Ghostbusters film. Almost.

There are contexts where, like the above, it is more than reasonable to assume that the artists understand what they are wearing and that the choices made are conscious and in some cases made with the goal of the comeback in mind. And there are situations where it’s possible or even confirmed by the artist that they didn’t know what they were wearing or what it meant. I think it can become an obsession for some to want the styling to be conveying a secret code. With the case of Charles Jeffrey Loverboy, there’s no code and it’s not secret. It’s simply known and recognised by those who know, which is enough.

Westminster city council and Social Work England last week became the latest to join a list of organisations – including Arts Council England, a barristers’ chambers and a thinktank – found to have discriminated against a female worker because of their gender-critical beliefs.

The social worker Rachel Meade’s winagainst the council and her profession’s regulator means she joins a select but growing group of gender-critical feminists who have successfully brought discrimination claims on the basis of their beliefs.

Gender-critical feminists believe sex is biological and cannot be changed, and disagree with trans rights activists who say gender identity should be given priority in terms of law-making and policy. Clashes in workplaces – in some cases with those who regard the focus on biological sex as transphobic – have led to a string of employment tribunals.

On Monday, a tribunal began hearing a constructive dismissal claim from Roz Adams against Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre. Next month, Kenny McBride’s case against the Scottish government is due to be heard in Glasgow, while judgments are pending in a claim from Prof Jo Phoenix against the Open University and that of the Green party’s former deputy leader Shahrar Ali against the party.

In all four cases – and more in the pipeline – the claimants argue they were discriminated against because they hold gender-critical beliefs.

They hope to follow in the footsteps of the barrister Allison Bailey, and of the researcher Maya Forstater who obtained a landmark judgment in 2021 that her gender-critical beliefs were a protected philosophical belief under the Equality Act. The campaign group Sex Matters, founded by Forstater, has identified at least 19 current cases.

After the Meade case last week, which like several others involved disciplinary action being initiated against an employee as a result of social media postings, Westminster council said it would “consider what changes we need to make”. For the local authority it comes too late to prevent a payout, but other employers may need to learn from it.

Lucy Lewis, a partner at the law firm Lewis Silkin, said that on such a politically charged issue, employers could feel they must act quickly after a complaint.

“Because this has become a politically toxic issue, there’s a sort of temptation [on the part of employers] to take a kneejerk reaction rather than the considered view of actually, what is the impact, is there another way we can address this [other than disciplinary proceedings or suspension]?

“People are being influenced by the very public and political dialogue on this and actually there’s value in just taking a step back and understanding all the factors.”

Georgina Calvert-Lee, an employment and equality barrister at Bellevue Law, agreed that the wider debate – in which gender-critical feminists and advocates of transgender rights have been at loggerheads – may have influenced employers, but said they must adjust their behaviour in light of the case law.

“What Forstater and Bailey have done is they’ve set this very strong precedent of tolerance,” Calvert-Lee said.

“Above all, in a pluralistic society, which is what we want, you have to accept that people are going to have different views and some people are going to find their colleagues’ views completely obnoxious – but nevertheless protected because freedom of speech is something that … has been really promoted and underlined.

“It’s always been there but it’s been sort of forgotten in some of these culture wars.”

After settling a case with a gender-critical volunteer, Katie Alcock, Girlguiding UK said it remained “a home for trans people” but added: “We agree that sex and gender are different, and will reflect this in the language we use.”

After another case that was settled out of court, brought by the student James Esses, who was thrown off his course for expressing gender-critical views, the UK Council for Psychotherapy conceded it was a valid professional belief that children suffering from gender dysphoria should receive counselling rather than medical intervention and people should not be discriminated against for such beliefs. Esses’ case against the Metanoia Institute continues.

Calvert-Lee said the cases to date showed the importance of employers training staff “about what is acceptable and what’s not and what amounts to harassment and what probably doesn’t – the sort of respect they should give to each other”, as well as giving training to those staff investigating complaints.

“Whenever there’s some sort of complaint which involves a belief that’s basically pitted against another belief, they [the investigator] have to be completely neutral,” she said. “It’s not on for the investigator to come to it very overtly with their own value judgment.”

The tribunals have made clear that it is not a free-for-all but a balancing exercise. For instance, David Mackereth – an outlier in that he lost his case based on gender-critical beliefs – was found to have crossed the line by misgendering service users at the Department for Work and Pensions, making its decision to dismiss him reasonable.

Calvert-Lee believes the recent increase in cases will ultimately be a blip rather than a growing trend, as workplaces become more aware of the need to handle complaints and concerns more carefully.

The events that led to Meade’s claim came “just weeks before the Forstater employment appeal tribunal decision was given”, she said, and the results of the Forstater and Bailey cases would mean “employers will have training, and so they’re likely to fall off, you’re likely to have fewer cases”.

Lewis said there would always be “bad eggs” but compared the situation to legal cases on manifestations of religious belief at work, such as wearing a cross.

“You have a flurry of cases and people that aren’t lawyers … wonder why those cases go away,” she said. “In a common law system like ours, you have cases that set out some of the principles employment tribunals need to consider and then really good organisations like the CIPD [Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development] take all that reasoning, they give advice and training to employers and then employers are clear about what they need to do, how they should manage this kind of conflict in the workplace.”

She added that the media attention afforded to gender-critical cases perhaps suggested that they were more common than they really were. In fact, she suggested there were likely to be a greater number of claims brought by transgender people alleging harm, though many go unreported.

“The overwhelming majority of employers are not setting out to discriminate; they’re not just thinking ‘well all people with gender-critical views are bad, so we’re just going to get rid of them’,” said Lewis.

“They just have got strong alternative views in the workplace and they haven’t known how to navigate through that conflict.”

The Republican War On Teachers

There’s a war being waged on America’s teachers,  and we must stand up for them before it’s too late.

Teachers watch over America’s most precious asset — our children.

They dedicate their lives to caring for our youth, serving as role models, and making sure that future generations are set up for success.

So why on Earth are we treating them so badly?

Our nation’s teachers are not only working long, demanding hours inside and outside of the classroom — but they’re blamed these days for almost everything imaginable.

They are yelled at by parents over masks, reprimanded by school boards about books they assign or let their students read, vilified by politicians for teaching honest lessons about America’s history of racism and genocide, even told to arm themselves against the possibility that their classrooms might be invaded by murderous young men with semi-automatics.

Teachers are also making less money than they were ten years ago. Their average salary today is around $66,000, but when adjusted for inflation, that’s a $2,000 pay cut compared to 2012. As recently as 2018, nearly 600,000 public school teachers had to work a second job.

We’re also saddling our nation’s educators with huge debt. Nearly half of teachers, 45%, have taken out student loans to pay for the advanced degrees often required of them — with an average debt load of $55,800.

On top of all this, 94% of teachers have had to dip into their own pockets to buy school supplies. This, in the richest country in the history of the world! And at a time when the average Wall Street employee bonus for 2021 hit a record high of $257,500. It would take the typical teacher almost four years to make that much — and that’s just a bonus for Wall Street traders — a massive golden cherry on top of their ever-sweeter salaries.  

I’m guessing Wall Street firms don’t make traders pay for their own pencils.

Are Wall Street bankers really worth so much more than the people we ask to care for and teach our children? P-l-e-a-s-e.

Yet none of this has stopped Republicans from accelerating their war on teachers, and turning educators into political pawns in their battle to advance a radical agenda.

Since January 2021, 35 states have introduced 137 bills limiting what educators are allowed to talk with their students about – with regard to race, American history, politics, sexual orientation and gender identity.

Governors Greg Abbott of Texas and Ron DeSantis of Florida are poster boys for this campaign, even supporting legislation that intrudes on a teacher's ability to craft lesson plans.

Republicans are quick to lob the terms “critical race theory” or “wokeism” against any curriculum that allows our youth to express their identities, advances critical thinking skills, and is honest about our nation’s tragic racial history — calling it “indoctrination” or “brainwashing.”

Why?

Because the biggest threat facing the Republican Party is a new multi-racial generation of young people unafraid to speak truth to power.

Ultimately, if we don’t learn from our history — which often means learning from our mistakes — there’s no way we can tackle our nation’s most pressing problems while building a better, more inclusive future. The foundation for this future begins in the classroom.

So how can we fight back against this war on America’s teachers?

First, pay them twice as much as they’re earning. Bare minimum.

Second, fight for their freedom to teach. Many of the decisions that affect teachers' day-to-day work — as well as the lives of students — are made at local school board meetings. So, go to one. Better yet, run for a position on your local school board.

Third, listen to our teachers. Do you know what’s been lost in the cultural and political war against education in this country? The voices of ACTUAL teachers. If we’re going to truly support them and repair the harm done to our education system, they need to be heard.

Defend our teachers. Pay our teachers. Value our teachers. The work they do determines our future.

Trey Fact Sheet

Trey’s aura is that of the big brother or protector of Heartslabyul dorm students, but the game guide assures us that “he has a dark side”. He can be gentle and often be found following up with victims at which Riddle has recently lashed out. He is generally not strict with Riddle himself, however, and is sometimes described as spoiling him.

Trey often speaks highly of Riddle. He is humble about his own abilities, saying, "There is not much I can do as a vice housewarden,” and "I am just for decoration." But there is no doubt that he is good at his job, capable of understanding whatever point it is that Riddle is trying to make much quicker than others. While admitting that there are several Queen of Hearts laws that don’t make sense to him, he has still memorized the first 350.

Floyd calls Trey “Umigame-kun”, for Sea Turtle. After Riddle’s enrollment in NRC Rook began referring to Trey as “Chevalier de Rose” (薔薇の騎士) for Rose Knight. Most of the students do not comment on Rook’s nicknames for them, but Trey has expressed multiple times that he does not like the name.

This is possibly because Trey seems to worry about what others think of him: in Deuce’s Wish Upon a Star vignette, he hides behind a pillar when two Octavinelle students begin to mock Deuce for his stargazer robes. The students leave quickly after realizing he is there, and Trey says outright that he “was trying to avoid being seen” while Deuce was dealing with the bullies, because “Dancing in this getup is embarrassing” and “Putting forth an honest effort for a fairy tale dance is just inherently awkward”.

Like Epel, Trey may also have some outdated ideas about gender roles, saying, "Men in particular can feel embarrassed and not want to do stuff like this, ya know?".

Much like Epel's lines, however, this was changed for ENG-server.

At the end of the event he comes around and says, “You were right” to Deuce, and that “This isn’t the time to worry about being embarrassed.”

Trey and Cater are self-described best friends, while Lilia refers to them as “partners” in Book 5. We learn in the Wish Upon a Star event that they roomed together for their first two years at NRC, and in a homescreen line Trey says they are always together because “I don’t have to worry about anything when I’m with Cater”, possibly insinuating that the embarrassment he can feel around others does not apply to Cater.

While he generally appears calm, it is because he usually does not express his innermost feelings in words or in his expressions―it can be unclear what he is thinking behind his smile.

Trey takes good care of his underclassmen and rarely becomes angry, but when he does, “he can stay that way for a while”, according to Cater.

In his dorm vignette, a group of first-year students tell him that making the same cakes all the time “gets a little samey” when he explains that he can’t take personal requests. When Trey recommends they try making a cake themselves, they agree, saying that baking would be “way easier” than doing lawn maintenance for the party.

At the end of the vignette, Trey has made a back-up cake to compensate for the culinary horror that is the cake made by the first-years, and he refuses to allow them to touch it without first eating all of their own cake-mistake, in revenge for their speaking down to him about the presumed difficulty and “sameness” of his cakes.

When Leona awakens from his overblot after it is discovered he and Ruggie were behind the events of Book 2, Trey's solution is to allow them to participate in the Spelldrive tournament, as Ruggie had injured Trey's ankle in an earlier chapter and a Spelldrive field is the only location in the school where the free use of magic is not against the rules. This pattern of preferring revenge over forgiveness seems to be characteristic of Trey.

He is also, occasionally, something of a prankster--despite his more mature aura--successfully convincing first Deuce and Ace and then Riddle that oyster sauce is a necessary ingredient of strawberry tarts, just for the fun of it.

Translation: "The red and black base-colors of Heartslabyul are accented by the green of the bedspread and rugs. All are designed in the same clover motif as Trey's last name. As befits Trey, two green hats are visible next to the desk."

He is described by others (and himself) as “ordinary”, with no particular skills. His PE vignette begins with Trey saying that he hopes to “squeak by with a passing grade” and it is all about “nailing that bare minimum” (he says in a homescreen line that he secretly does not enjoy flying), but he then shows extraordinary flying skills to rescue Kalim from a flying carpet mishap, much to the surprise of Vargas who had never before noticed his abilities in nearly three years of being his teacher.

When Vil compliments him on being an “exceptional second-in-command” to Riddle, Trey downplays his abilities as usual, leading Vil to respond, “Those with no appreciation for character would take your modesty at face value. Of course, if that’s the image you want to manufacture for yourself, don’t let me stop you.”

He is also very skilled at alchemy, his best subject. This may have something to do with confectionary often requiring prices measurements and attention paid to the reactions between ingredients, which is similar to the delicacy and precision needed in science.

His talent being “seasonings” insinuates that he, much like Azul, has a very discerning palette, though we learn from Trey that Riddle―the recipient of many of his creations―does not.

He is always humble when complimented by others and downplays his achievements, perhaps to stay out of trouble by remaining as inconspicuous as possible at all times. In the Twisted Wonderland novel, it is specifically mentioned that the true extent of Trey’s unique magic was able to take Riddle by surprise because Riddle had never thought to pay attention to it.

Trey’s family runs a cake shop, and Trey is something of a pâtissier himself. He has a “You’ve got to put love into it” voice line in alchemy classes, but tells Jade that “love has nothing to do with” the cakes and tarts that he makes for his dorm’s Unbirthday parties.

Trey has a younger brother and a younger sister. He is very adept at making meatloaf because of how often they would request it when he still lived at home.

He is very big on oral hygiene and uses different toothbrushes for different parts of his mouth, even teaching his Heartslabyul underclassmen how to best brush their teeth. He expresses sincere delight in learning that Sebek’s father is a dentist and asks to one day be introduced. When Deuce explains that Trey’s “hobby” is brushing his teeth, Sebek responds, “no matter how important it is to him, making it into a hobby is bizarre!”

He is not especially good at or fond of sports, but he is one of the main members on the Heartslabyul spell drive team and used to play soccer when he was younger (because his parents wanted him to start building up the strength needed for candy-making).

In a homescreen voice line, he says he is not particularly flexible. He first discovered candied violets―his favorite food―when he was very young, and says that he was so amazed by the concept of edible flowers that he started trying to eat flowers found along the side of the road, causing much trouble to his parents.

Trey, Riddle and RSA’s Chenya were childhood friends, though Chenya and Trey were only able to meet Riddle to play, in secret, for a short few months as children. Trey invites the two over to his family’s shop for Riddle to taste the first strawberry tart he has ever had in his life, but when Riddle’s mother discovers that they have snuck out during Riddle’s self-study hour she bans Trey and Chenya from the house, locking Riddle’s window (from which he had been escaping) and forbidding them from ever seeing one another again.

The two would not reunite again until Riddle’s enrollment at NRC.

On the JPN-server (and in the manga) Riddle’s mother becomes “ten times angrier than Riddle” and lectures Trey's entire family at their shop “for five hours” while they apologize for Trey’s actions.

This childhood trauma was changed on the ENG-server translation, however, to Trey being lectured for those five hours by his own family.

It can be assumed that this (JPN-server-exclusive) history between the two is why Trey is so lenient with Riddle and his treatment of those around him, which can vary from objectively unfair to unnecessarily violent. Trey’s choosing to his ignore various, underlying issues and focus upon improving Riddle’s mood may have been the catalyst that ultimately led to Riddle’s overblot.

Throughout Book 1 Trey’s decisions are often the rational choice while also serving only as temporary stopgaps to keep trouble at bay, without resolving the actual problem at hand.

In a card vignette Kalim encourages him to speak his mind and not keep his opinions and grievances to himself, but he generally does not. While not malicious, this was likely hurting his relationship with Riddle more than bettering it. Trey did apologize to Riddle for the part he played in Riddle’s overblot, and their relationship seems to have improved since then.

When Epel tells Trey how he has heard how kind and caring he is from Ace and Deuce, Trey assures him, “I’m not a very good guy”.

Trey’s dislike of mustard came from a game he played in his childhood with Chenya, where they would eat cream puffs with a one-in-five chance of one being filled with mustard instead of cream. He selected the mustard-puff, and has hated mustard ever since.

In episode three of the official Disney Games YouTube Show "Good Boy!", hosted by Crewel's voice actor Itou Kento, Ito and Kalim's voice actor Furuta Kazuki discuss the scene in the original Alice in Wonderland animated movie where the queen discover the card soldiers painting her roses.

Here is a quote from Itou: "Those three cards (who were painting white roses red) were the Ace of Clovers, the two of clovers and the three of clovers. When asked why they were painting the roses, the three of clovers blames the two of clovers. Perhaps there is a similarity to the calculating nature of the three of clovers in that scene to Trey’s personality?"

Trey’s unique magic “Paint the Roses” (Pronounced as “Doodle Suit”) enables him to “overwrite” something for a brief period of time.

Due to the way the power was introduced (and thanks to Trey’s downplaying) it seemed at first like it was capable of only overwriting the taste of certain foods to make them taste like other foods, but at the end of Book 1 we learn that it is powerful enough to overwrite―to the point of practically nullifying―magic as strong as Riddle’s in overblot form.

A same-sex couple has filed a lawsuit against a Pasadena in-vitro fertilization clinic, claiming that their hopes of having a son were hampered after a female embryo was wrongly implanted in their surrogate and they instead had a daughter born in 2021.

Albert and Anthony Saniger filed the lawsuit against HRC Fertility and fertility specialist Dr. Bradford A Kolb, alleging breach of contract, medical malpractice, negligence and fraudulent concealment and violation of the Unfair Competition Law and the Consumer Legal Remedies Act.

The suit was brought on Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court and seeks unspecified damages.

HRC released a statement saying, "At HRC Fertility, our mission is to provide world-class care. We have helped thousands of people, including the couple involved in this lawsuit. The couple ideally desired a baby boy but were blessed with a healthy girl. To their dissatisfaction, we have sought to address their concerns. Every child has value and limitless potential regardless of gender."

"We hope the Sanigers find love and value in their healthy child while so many across the country are struggling with reproductive issues. Since 1988, we have remained and continue to remain, dedicated to helping hopeful parents build families through assisted reproductive technology, compassion, expertise, innovation, cutting edge research and personalized care."

The Sanigers, married in 2013, dreamed of having two children, both sons, the suit states. Before they were wed, the couple chose first and middle names for their future sons in May 2015 and created Gmail accounts for their future offspring with their first and last names, according to the lawsuit.

Throughout the process, the couple was explicit with HRC and Kolb that they wanted only male embryos transferred to their surrogate and the defendants represented that the Sanigers would get to select the exact embryos, which had an identified gender, to be used in each transfer, the suit states.

Instead, the suit states, HRC and Kolb "negligently, recklessly, and/or intentionally transferred a female embryo to the Sanigers' gestational carrier."

HRC "specifically targets" families in the LGBTQ community and its website says the clinic is "dedicated to helping the gay and lesbian community achieve their dreams of parenthood," according to the lawsuit.

HRC's website also states that Kolb is internationally known for his expertise in complex reproductive matters and that patients come from around the world to seek his services, the suit states. The website further states that Kolb's practice is known for helping to develop and implement cutting-edge technologies in the genetic screening of embryos and the development of new laboratory technologies, according to the suit.

IVF is a particularly expensive process for male gay couples who must arrange for their children to be carried to term by a gestational carrier, the suit states. In May 2020, the Sanigers provided their sperm to HRC to create their embryos and arrangements were made for donor eggs and a gestational carrier through a third-party agency at a total cost to the plaintiffs of about $300,000, the suit states.

Unsuccessful transfers occurred in July and September 2020 before their surrogate became pregnant in December of that year, according to the lawsuit.

The Sanigers' daughter was born in 2021, the suit states.

"To this day, HRC has offered no explanation for how this error occurred," the suit states.

The financial impact to the Sanigers is "staggering" because they ultimately will be raising three children rather than the two sons for which they had planned, the suit states.

♡ Peter loves your style so much. All the layers of clothing, the matching colours, how any colour you add matches the black you often prefer to wear.

♡ He loves all of your accessories and will watch you create your own and sometimes even steal you some materials for you to use.

♡ If you make pop-tab chains, necklaces, button pins, bottle cap pins, etc; he'll gift you pop-tabs from the cans of soda he drinks during his free time and bottle caps he finds laying around the place.

♡ It's always fun to see him speed around a corner, put a pop-tab or bottle cap in your hand with a smile and then zoom off again.

♡ A bit like 'Penguin Pebbling'.

♡ If you make him any jewelry or accessories, or button pins, he'll absolutely wear them.

♡ You once made him a 'Bauhaus' button pin and he's never taken it off his jacket unless he has to wash the jacket.

♡ As a date you both painted a pair of your sneakers to your liking and then coated them in paint protector until they were finished and safe from being weather ruined.

♡ If you love going to goth concerts and parties he'll 100% go with you to some of them and bop with a drink in hand.

♡ He carries hair ties on his right wrist in case yours break, safety pins attached to his jackets in case your button pins come undone and eyeliner in his pocket in case your makeup messes up.

♡ He'll paint his nails black with you and adopt any black kittens you find on the streets.

♡ If you find a stray dog he'll definitely raise the dog with you and name it something incredible like "Trucker".

♡ He'll tie your shoelaces when they come loose, hold your hair back when you're doing your makeup, help you put your necklaces on and help pin any slightly too big skirts.

♡ You and him have constant dance sessions together in his room and your playlist is a strange mix of his music and your music.

♡ It'll jump from 'Us and Them' by Pink Floyd straight into 'Spellbound' by Siouxsie and The Banshees.

♡ Going to skateparks together and having a lot of fun just messing around and trying new tricks. He loves when you pull off a kickflip or cross-over turn (depending on what you skate).

♡ You'll both celebrate Halloween by watching spooky movies and setting up fun decorations and treats. You both go candy shopping and leave them outside for trick-or-treators.

♡ If y'all shoplift or graffiti because someone was horrible and y'all are getting your revenge? He'll 100% speed you both out of there the minute you grab an item or finish some graffiti art.

♡ Whilst on graffiti art, if you love it then you'll both take long walks under bridges, through alleyways and abandoned buildings and skateparks to admire the graffiti art and take photographs.

♡ If you need a model for your photography he'll pose in photos for you. During sunsets, concerts, beach days or when in a new state, you take a picture to remember the date with.

♡ You have a small scrapbook with little bats decorating the spaces between the photos as well as some press-dried roses.

The sunlight began to hurt, nothing sat right in his stomach. Everything was the same yet all so different, better and worse. He spiraled, confused and depressed, until the Dusk Angel found him and helped him come to terms with his new existence. Some Background: Born in St. Louis Missouri, Ralph had a pretty standard lower middle class upbringing. He followed his father and older brother and joined the army when he turned 18 right out of high school. Years of prep and hard work paid off as he went through candidate courses, eventually making it into Special Forces. His career was short-lived however after losing his right foot on his first deployment. Depression and dead-end jobs seemed to be his future until as a joke he started posting thirst-traps on social media, but it got real when his follower count spiked and sponsors started making offers. He was thrown into the life of an Insta-Thot - specifically Fitness Inspo - ultimately landing him in a party in Atlanta, Georgia, where his soon to be sire, Bill - a jealous and spiteful Nosferatu - lurked. Ralph was alone as he stumbled to his hotel room, and Bill could contain his hate no longer. To him, Ralph deserved to be as ugly on the outside as Bill thought he had to be on the inside. Little did Bill know, he messed with the wrong guy.

(Not written due to lack of room, we clearly don't play favorites here...) Eventually found in the sewers by the Dusk Angel, Ralph now serves in the Thinblood revolution, using every skill he's acquired in order to get revenge against the Fullbloods.

Shippers call this moment c. 2010 the "Koala Hug." 2Min were celebrating Minho doing an extreme vaulting challenge. Yes, you read that right.

However, that vibe eventually gets tinged by SM playing with Taemin's gender presentation.

When Taemin is given extensions and suddenly bombarded with men telling him he looks like a woman etc, Minho is one of the people to confidently say that Taemin is "pretty to begin with" so there is nothing to be done about it. I always read that as him almost being prideful over it; Minho definitely likes the idea of Taemin being prettier than girl groups or his work beating out that of girl groups (read into that how you want, lol), but I think he liked Taemin exactly how he was from the get go, which is cry-inducing really.

If you were to go back and look at shipper blogs and live journals from 2013/2014, you would see some 2Min fans getting upset that their ship has sunk. There was this idea that when Taemin became an adult, he put away childish things (and non cis-het things) and that included Minho (lol). Many perceived Taemin had switched to a more manly look/concept, and/or that he really wanted to shed his gender neutral or ambiguous traits/looks.

Dream Girl was uh, really something.

It's true that in 2013, we see a more boyish Taemin versus Sherlock Taemin. He's also older and filling out and indeed, becoming a young adult. Interestingly, he does We Got Married (let's not go there) and goes on to start his solo career in 2014.

But I think what this "lore," or shipper narrative, reveals is how easy it was for shippers to slot 2Min into a sailing ship because they perceived Taemin to be more feminine to Minho's masculine, thus upholding heteronormative ideas of romance even in a supposedly gay "couple" - a common trait of same-sex shipping that although nuanced by certain cultural factors is still often a staple of same-sex shipping and related fanworks.

Fast-forwarding to mid-2018, we have a clingy if uneven 2Min. By the end of 2019, we have a somewhat wistful 2Min who like to attend each other's events and make grand gestures in front of the crowd.

In late 2020, we have Minho driving for hours on the day of his discharge, in uniform, to head directly to Taemin's taping for Idea at one of the TV networks in Korea. The rest of SHINee are there, and they treat us to an IG live of their reunion. 2Min are cute and a little cuddly - it's clear they missed one another. 🥹

2018 2Min have great hair colors.

What were 2021 2Min like? Friendly, feisty, and in the end, a little romantic/bromantic (pick your poison). 2Min fighting or annoying one another happened, but by the time Taemin enlisted, it was clear Minho was an emotional rock for him to some degree. And when Taemin was unwell, it was Minho who spoke to us first and then began updating us at the 14th anniversary party, with Key and Onew also speaking.

Hey! I was hoping you could possibly help me make my sibling understand my views on the PPC and the Freedom Convoy, because she doesn't think supporting either of them means you're a white supremacist/racist/etc (because I did in fact say supporting either was a strong indication you were a white supremacist). I've already told her the fact that the PPC calls themselves a "right or far-right" political party is enough of an argument to be made, but she was also adamant about me finding articles about both. Okay, I'm linking a bunch of sources and summarizing some information below. before I get into that though, I just want to say as a brown muslim, that every single people's party voter and freedom convoy supporter I have ever talked to has been outright racist and islamophobic, usually also xenophobic when they assume I'm an immigrant.

I used to canvas for the NDP, and they would tell us not to knock on doors of people with PPC signs, especially as people of colour, because there was a history of harassment and threats from PPC supporters

It's struck me today how wild the timescale of this fandom is

Unlike fandoms that get new content (books, tv seasons, etc) on a regular basis, the Good Omens fandom has been essentially self-supporting for decades. I arrived incredibly late to the party, but I've felt more accepted here than anywhere in my life. But looking back at my life really puts in perspective how much fucking time has passed.

The novel was published in 1990. I was not even alive then.

The first season of the show came out in 2019. In 2019 I was deeply closeted at home, somewhat out at school, and had never met a trans person or a queer adult. My access to media was strictly controlled and I didn't really have internet access. I was still fairly religious, but I was experiencing severe untreated mental health issues that I had been raised to believe were my fault for lack of faith.

The lockdown episode of course took place in 2020. I was forced out of the closet by my mother, who had read my texts and, finding nothing, my emails. This was days before I found out I would not be seeing my friends again or even leaving the house for months. I spent several weeks worth of free time in the early days of Covid writing a massive research paper on biblical christianity and queerness, desperate to convince my parents that the bible never said I couldn't be a lesbian. Their rejection of this was the beginning of the end for my faith.

The second season was announced in 2021. I graduated high school and took a gap year for a voluntary residential hospitalization to get my mental health in a safe place so I could go to college. I finally began properly deconstructing my faith but struggled a lot to figure out where that put me. I briefly considered just converting to a different branch of Christianity that was less controlling. I got engaged to my highschool sweetheart.

In 2022 I started college and started to explore gender, made new friends, started catching up on all the queer media I'd missed when I lived with my parents. Officially decided I never wanted to step foot in a church again and then shoved the rest of my religious trauma deep down where I wouldn't have to think about it.

The second season was released the summer of 2023, last year. I waited until I was alone at the house and binged the first season on my mom's prime account. She was around a bit while I watched the second but mercifully didn't have anything too rude to say. I was shockingly, almost neurotypically normal about the show at first.

September of 2023 I broke up with my fiance and started spending more time on tumblr again. Good Omens quickly became my comfort show. In October I started writing creatively again for the first time in nearly five years (long story, loads of trauma), fanfiction obviously. Brainrot set in very quickly.

When season 3 comes out, I will be probably be nearly finished with undergrad. If it takes a long time I might even be totally finished. That's kind of terrifying, but also amazing. 2019 me could have never even imagined such a thing.

Time has always been a strange, gooey thing for me, but looking at how much has changed in a time period that doesn't seem that long numerically is particularly trippy. And that makes me weirdly sentimental. It's crazy to me to be accepted in the kind of space that younger me would have dreamed of, and I look forward to spending the next few years getting excited over this with y'all.

Daily Salinas, a mother in the Miami-area whose complaint about “The Hill We Climb” by Amanda Gorman got it successfully restricted in an elementary school, confessed she did not read the piece she objected to in its entirety. According to Salinas, the poem “is not educational and have indirectly [sic] hate messages.” Gorman’s work, which was performed at President Biden’s Inauguration in 2021, wasn’t the only thing Salinas complained about.

According to the Florida Freedom to Read Project, Salinas—whose two children attend The Bob Graham Education Center in Miami Lakes—also came for “The ABCs of Black History,” “Cuban Kids,” “Countries in the News: Cuba,” and “Love to Langston” for including “references of critical race theory,” “indirect hate messages” and “gender ideology and indoctrination.”

In an interview, Salinas tried to justify her ignorance of the material. “I’m not an expert,” she said. “I’m not a reader. I’m not a book person. I’m a mom involved in my children’s education.” In addition to being admittedly dense, Salinas has also promoted antisemitism on social media and attended rallies featuring members of the Proud Boys.

Even though she has Cuban heritage, the Florida parent used thinly veiled bigotry as an excuse to further oppress other marginalized groups. Sadly, the fact that she stripped her claims of any validity by not reading the material didn’t phase her in the least. The same can be said of Emily Conklin, another Florida parent who complained about the Disney film “Ruby Bridges” being shown in her child’s classroom because she believed it teaches that white people hate Black people.

The film was temporarily banned at North Shore Elementary in St. Petersburg, though Conklin admitted that she never finished the film (she only watched the first 50 minutes of the movie). Ron DeSantis’ Florida governorship has emboldened white supremacist ideology for conservatives who don’t even consume material they claim to be dangerous to their children. His newly announced presidential run will only work to deepen this dystopia.

The right vehemently has attacked anything they deem “woke,” though they have repeatedly failed to define what it even means. As the GOP sharpen their claws and gear up try to take over White House next year, instances like these remind us that they will never rely on reason, intelligence or principle when it comes to policy and legislation. It will always thrive on hate, discrimination and racism—pillars that have upheld the party since its inception.

At the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) last weekend, Daily Wire host Michael Knowles said that “for the good of society…transgenderism must be eradicated from public life entirely—the whole preposterous ideology, at every level.” He worded his statement in such a way that it would inevitably create outrage that he could then angrily refute by insisting that “eradicating transgenderism” was not the same thing as eradicating transgender people. This sort of word game is a well-known right-wing tactic for garnering media attention.

Make no mistake: this attack on transgender people represents a deadly attack on the fundamental principle of American democracy, the idea that all people are created equal.

CPAC and its representatives have become increasingly close to Hungarian president Victor Orbán as he has asserted autocratic power in his own country. Orbán has explicitly rejected the liberal democracy that his country used to enjoy, saying that its emphasis on multiculturalism weakens national cultures while its insistence on human equality undermines traditional society by recognizing that women and LGBTQ people have the same rights as straight white men. The age of liberal democracy is over, he says, and a new age has begun.

In place of equality, Orbán advocates what he calls “illiberal democracy” or “Christian democracy.” “Christian democracy is, by definition, not liberal,” he said in July 2018; “it is, if you like, illiberal. And we can specifically say this in connection with a few important issues—say, three great issues. Liberal democracy is in favor of multiculturalism, while Christian democracy gives priority to Christian culture; this is an illiberal concept. Liberal democracy is pro-immigration, while Christian democracy is anti-immigration; this is again a genuinely illiberal concept. And liberal democracy sides with adaptable family models, while Christian democracy rests on the foundations of the Christian family model; once more, this is an illiberal concept.”

Orbán has focused on LBGTQ rights as a danger to “Western civilization.” Arguing the need to protect children, his party has made it impossible for transgender people to change their gender identification on legal documents and made it illegal to share with minors any content that can be interpreted as promoting an LBGTQ lifestyle. After Orbán put allies in charge of Hungarian universities, his government banned public funding for gender studies courses. According to his chief of staff: “The Hungarian government is of the clear view that people are born either men or women.”

As the opening speaker at CPAC in Texas last August, Orbán called for the establishment of a global right wing to continue to work together to destroy liberal democracy and establish Christian democracy.

The American right wing has heard the call, openly embracing Orbán’s principles. Vox senior correspondent Zack Beauchamp, who is a crackerjack analyst of right-wing political ideology both in the U.S. and abroad, noted in 2021 the rise of right-wing ideologues who saw themselves as the vanguard of a “post-liberal order.”

Beauchamp explained that these ideologues reject American democracy. They argue that “religious liberty, limited government, ‘the inviolability of private institutions (e.g., corporations),’ academic freedom, constitutional originalism, free markets, and free speech”—all central tenets of democracy—have created “liberal totalitarianism” that has destroyed “all institutions that were originally responsible for fostering human virtue: family, ennobling friendship, community, university, polity, church.”

They see the government institutions that defend these democratic tenets as part of a totalitarian system designed to destroy national virtue. If this were truly the case (it is not), it would be an act of heroism to try to destroy those systems altogether. Right-wing attacks on the FBI, the Department of Justice, and even the government itself over the arrest of January 6th rioters who they insist were peaceful tourists shore up the idea that the FBI and DOJ are part of a government determined to crush Trump supporters. That ideology invites those who believe it to continue to attack our government.

Knowles’s statement last week that transgenderism must be eradicated from public life was not simply an attack on transgender individuals, although it was certainly that. Tapping into the anti-LGBTQ sentiment that Orbán and those like him have used to win voters, the statement was a crucial salvo in the attempt to destroy American democracy and replace it with Christian nationalism.

But there is a very simple answer to the radical right’s attack on LGBTQ people that also answers their rejection of democracy. It is an answer that history has proved again and again.

Once you give up the principle of equality, you have given up the whole game. You have admitted the principle that people are unequal, and that some people are better than others. Once you have replaced the principle of equality with the idea that humans are unequal, you have stamped your approval on the idea of rulers and subjects. At that point, all you can do is to hope that no one in power decides that you belong in the lesser group.

In 1858, Abraham Lincoln, then a candidate for the Senate, warned that arguments limiting American equality to white men and excluding black Americans were the same arguments “that kings have made for enslaving the people in all ages of the world…. Turn in whatever way you will—whether it come from the mouth of a King, an excuse for enslaving the people of his country, or from the mouth of men of one race as a reason for enslaving the men of another race, it is all the same old serpent.”

Either people—men, in his day—were equal, or they were not. Lincoln went on: “I should like to know if taking this old Declaration of Independence, which declares that all men are equal upon principle and making exceptions to it…where will it stop?”
