Islamic State group claims attack on Chinese hotel in Kabul

Islamabad - The militant Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for a coordinated attack on a Chinese-owned hotel in Afghanistan's capital that left three attackers dead and at least two hotel guests wounded as they tried to escape by jumping from a window. Beijing on Tuesday advised its citizens in Afghanistan to leave the country "as soon as possible" after the attack.Smoke billowed from the 10-story building in the heart of the city, according to pictures posted on social media, from the terrorist attack on the Kabul Longan Hotel on Monday afternoon. Residents reported explosions and gunfire. Taliban forces stormed the area and blocked all roads leading to the site in the central Shar-e-Nau neighbourhood. Khalid Zadran, a Taliban-appointed spokesman for the Kabul police chief, said the attack lasted several hours, after which a clean-up operation was carried out. Hours later, a regional affiliate of the Islamic State group - a key rival of the Taliban since they seized power in Afghanistan a year ago - claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement carried by one of the militant Telegram channels used by IS, the group said two of its members targeted the hotel because it is frequented by diplomats and is owned by "communist China".The statement further claimed that IS attackers detonated two bags filled with explosives that had been left at the hotel earlier, one of which was in the main hall, and set a part of the hotel on fire. The militant group did not present any evidence for its claims.There were conflicting reports about the number of casualties. Taliban officials said that three attackers were killed; IS claims that only two of its members took part in the attack, identifying them by name and posting their photographs. According to Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, two foreign residents were injured when they jumped from windows to escape the fighting. But Kabul's emergency hospital said in a tweet that 21 people had died, including the bodies of three people. On Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin called the attack "egregious in nature" and said China was "deeply shocked." China demanded a "thorough investigation" and urged the Taliban government to "take firm and firm measures to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals, institutions and projects in Afghanistan".The Chinese Embassy in Kabul sent its team to the site to help with rescue, treatment and accommodation for the victims of the attack.
