SEOTAIJI 25 Project [Time:Traveler] - song #1

This year marks the 25th anniversary for Seo Taiji’s debut in the group Seo Taiji and Boys. In celebration of that milestone, Seo Taiji is doing a project called “SEOTAIJI 25 Project [Time : Traveler]” where younger artists are remaking some of Seo Taiji’s greatest hits. The first song in the series was released today, and I have thoughts.

My immediate thoughts are (and I say this as a total BTS stan): It's good. It's decent. It’s fun. But it doesn't blow me away, and here's why...

I've been listening to Seo Taiji and Boys' version of "Come Back Home" for at least 10 years now, and nostalgia is a powerful spell. When it comes to covering classic, beloved songs, you basically have two options for success: 1) do a note-for-note replica, or 2) make the song sound almost nothing like the original. Option 1 embraces the nostalgia you know people will have for the original song. Option 2 is really the only way to break the spell of nostalgia and have the cover song stand out as it's own work of art, but it's a lot more risky. People will either love it, or hate it.

When I think of cover songs done by musicians in Asia, my mind immediately goes to "Genkai Haretsu" by hide, and the subsequent cover done by Oblivion Dust. If you listened to both songs back to back, I wouldn't blame you for not making the connection that they're supposed to be the same song (unless you're super familiar with the lyrics). Oblivion Dust's version has a much darker, sort of industrial sound. It's more haunting and heavy. They cherry picked specific lyrics to use from the original song, rearranged them, and completely discarded the rest. The result is something so completely different to hide's original song that it stands out as its own piece of art. It's not just a cover, it's a complete deconstruction and rebuilding of the song—a true "remake".

So that brings me back to BTS's remake of "Come Back Home" and why I feel that it falls a bit short. It's too "on the fence". It's similar to the original, but not an exact copy. It's different from the original, but not so different that it significantly separates itself from the original (it definitely has its moments, though). I guess you could say it sounds like they played it safe? Or more like they made an homage than a remake. I don't necessarily blame them for that. Seo Taiji is a music legend and "Come Back Home" is one of his most well known and beloved songs. You don't wanna screw up a classic, but at the same time I wish they had taken more risks with the remake to really make it sound completely like their song. (I also acknowledge they were probably under time constraints, considering they've been on a world tour since February.) Over all it's decent and fun, but not mind blowing. I've read that they might be covering more than one song, so we'll see how that goes.

I'm looking forward to all the other remakes that will come from this project, and really hoping someone dares to do something really weird and outside of the box, to be an innovator and risk-taker like Seo Taiji was!
