Beware of Luxury, Jan Steen.
The canvas is a humorous illustration of a Dutch saying of those more ascetic times "In weelde siet toe..." which in full loosely translates as "In good times beware the consequences". In this case the lady of the house has fallen asleep, allowing the other members of the family to take full advantage. Her husband in the foreground is carrying on a dalliance with the provocative young woman, who is holding a glass of wine between his legs. He is himself laughing off the admonitions of a nun or beguine. A younger child is helping herself to something from a cabinet and her young brother is trying out a pipe. The youngest child is playing with a string of pearls, the eldest son is playing a violin, the dog is on the table finishing off the meal and a pig has wandered into the room. Warnings of the consequences include the Quaker with a duck on his shoulder reading out pious texts and a basket of instruments of punishment hanging from the ceiling. The moral of the picture is clear - sinners guilty of the deadly sin of lust must expect some penalty.

Axel Helsted (April 11, 1847 - 1907) was a Danish painter whose father, Frederik Ferdinand Helsted ran a drawing school for the Royal Academy. Axel was also sent to the Academy as a young lad and finished his training there at age 19.
After touring several European capitals - Paris, London, Berlin, Rome - he returned home to get married, and soon after he was off again and spent five years in Italy with his wife. Unfortunately she passed away at 34 in 1886, and after that Helsted turned to religious art, especially after a journey to Palestine in 1890.
Prior to that he mainly produced portraits and light genre paintings, such as this one:
A young Italian woman playing with a dog, 1872 - oil on canvas (formerly at Kunsten, Aalborg, but now privately owned)

A famous Boilly painting explained
Another pearl from the Fondation Napoleon, in English this time! :
https://www.napoleon.org/en/history-of-the-two-empires/paintings/the-downpour-laverse/
I’ve seen this painting many times, but this comes with comments and context which makes it even more interesting.
I noticed that the plank on which the main subjects are depicted is on wheels, which would logically indicate that it does not span the width of the street. This stands to reason, otherwise the circulation of carts and carriages would be made impossible. In reality, then, people would be wheeled across the street on these planks.
I wonder how many people found themselves thrown from such a plank if one of its wheels struck a large pebble and jerked to a stop.

Carl Thomsen (April 6, 1847 - 1912) was a Danish painter, trained at the Royal Academy under Vermehren and Marstrand. He was a rather conservative genre painter, but quite popular in his day. SMK has a number of his works, as do other Danish museums.
