@tanadrin Yes, I was thinking of you when I posted this, I have never been convinced by your writings here since they seem to be based on nothing at all. Writing "the burden of proof is on the other side" seems functionally equivalent to "I have no arguments for this, I just believe it".

i believe it because embodied cognition is the best account (out of admittedly a not very strong field of contenders) of psychology which explains both the basis of language and how we interact with the world

embodied cognition doesn’t negate the possibility that we can learn from reading, but that reading involves negotiating systems of abstraction (language) that are built on real-world experience. you say yourself:

My point is that none of us have a base in reality to start from. A newborn baby has no concept of fibre or thin or floppy, it has to figure it all out from scratch based on the raw pixel values impinging its optic nerve. It also learns "meaning from form alone", but nobody notices because it feels so natural.

and i think this implies you think there’s a similarity between reading and taking in raw sense data, but i think this is a crucial and revealing mistake. because language as a faculty comes much later in the development of cognition (both evolutionary and in terms of childhood development), and is used to index concepts and generalizations built up from sense data (cf. prototype theory).

the account of language alone as a basis for learning about the world seems to me to assert without argument that cognitive linguistics is all false (this may be true; some evidence for it as a claim would be nice! or at least an engaged critique of the claims of cognitive linguistics) and meaning can be embedded directly in language without reference to an external environment, sense data, or experience (this is arguably tantamount to a claim that all linguistics since Saussure is false; which again, it may be, but evidence against or an engaged critique of Saussurian semiotics would be nice).

the cheeky answer is that the fact that there exist words or even full sentences in two different languages which are identical but which mean different things is a full refutation of this position; but less cheekily, i think it’s a problem for this position that we can easily imagine that there exist two languages--say, English, and !English--whose phonology an orthography is identical, and which share similar lexis and grammatical structures, but for the language !English, each word or grammatical structure in English means something completely different; and that a large body of text in English and !English might be superficially identical but mean completely different things.

You might argue that this could be true for toy examples but not for as large a body of text as, say, the entire publicly available internet. I don’t know that that’s true, but it becomes increasingly plausible for reductiones that are less absurda (less strained examples than !English or smaller text corpora), and I think it still presents a problem for the underlying philosophical assumptions you’re working with.

Deathstroke kept working at the lock on the upstairs window while talking to him, calling him "Nightwings secret son" in the creepiest voice Danny has ever heard as Danny watched him from the computer monitor. This guy had been trying to break in and kidnap Danny for days but the house keeps fighting him off and Danny was on his very first stay-cation away from ghosts. He wasn't going to deal with this wierdo if he could avoid it.

He had put a lot of work into setting this up. He and Jazz had convinced thier parents to go to a two week occult conference in Fawcett City and leave Danny home alone while Jazz was off taking collage classes in Central City in hopes that it will help her get into her dream collage when she turns 18. Danny even sent Vlad on a while goose chase that sent him into the path of that trench coat guy people kept warning him about before shutting down the portals.

Danny refuses to let all of his effort go to waste and the house is pretty well defended so he decided to just use this as entertainment as he munches on dry cereal.

They didn't have any popcorn in the house and he's not leaving with captain crazy still out there.

Eventually Danny gets bored and @s Nightwing on Chirper simply telling him that Deathstroke was trying to kidnap him and it has something to do with Nightwing. He sends him a fail compilation video of all the times Deathstroke failed to get into the house and getting progressively more angry. The last video showed Deathstroke absolutely enraged.

Danny thought that Nightwing probably had a similar situation with Deathstroke that Danny himself have with Vlad and that he'd laugh and show it to all his superhero friends and they'd mock him together.

He was not expecting half of the batclan in Amity Park 3 hours later. Nor was he expecting to get kidnapped by the bats the moment he was out of the house.

He was most upset by everyone calling him a dick though. Was what he did really that bad? Talking back to adults usually didn't get him anywhere so he just kept quiet and went with them, expecting to have to give testimony to the police or something.

One of my favourite brain rotting tcf ideas is Cale having some tremor disorder. Basically, he has hands that randomly tremble without any reason.

It may be genetic to him, or he developed it as Cale because of not eating his meals properly and inevitably developing some vitamin deficiency.

Now comes the best part.

Imagine Cale, perhaps in some really gruesome battle, with blood of enemies and allies mixed around him. Imagine his family seeing Cale's stoic face, wondering how a person so young can be so brave, and then they see his hands shaking under his raven coat, even as they're curled tightly into a fist.

Imagine Cale looking at Jour's portrait, admiring her beauty and her alike face with his own. But then his family sees him, his gaze fixated on his mother's image and his hands trembling slightly.

Imagine him, standing at the forefront of some battle with his shields raised, with his hands trembling uncontrollably, even though he is not straining himself. The people protected under him can only tear up at his selflessness.

Imagine Cale after attacking the enemies with a wave of firebolts, but his hands again started shaking badly, even if he has them covered under his sleeves. His family misunderstands that as Cale hiding his pain.

Imagine Cale, resting on a couch after some battle, and when Raon, On and Hong excitedly climb upon his lap, he only smiles slightly and pats them with his trembling hands. The kids then worriedly inform Ron of this and Cale recieves sweet lemon tea for a whole week.

Imagine Cale talking about territory matters with Alberu, and Alberu is once again amazed by his dongsaeng's witty and almost experienced approaches to problems like war. But then he sees Cale's hands shaking while holding the tea cup, and he realises how absolutely not normal it is to not be nervous in such a situation. (Alberu later pledges to himself to give Cale the slacker life he always wished for.)

Just imagine Cale in any situation with trembling hands and it literally creates the most hilarious misunderstandings with some really wonderful angst.
