#geoffrey of monmouth
AU but instead of Merlin banishing Kilgharrah, he turns him into a cat that looks and behaves like a disagreeable old man.
Kilgharrah spends a while sulking in Merlin’s room but then decides he might as well enjoy the freedom he has now.
And he’s an absolute menace.
He knocks things over, he scratches nobles, he’s surprisingly nice to Geoffrey in the library but he never let anyone pet him.
It takes weeks of matted fur for him to let Merlin brush him, even then Merlin has to use dragon speech to stop Kilgharrah biting him.
After he finds out that Uther is allergic to cats, he spends a good amount of his time getting cat hair all over Uther’s chambers and clothes.
He leaves Arthur dead mice after reading that cats leave gifts if they think their owner is a bad hunter and unable to provide.
He doesn’t like Gaius, so he sits on his chair before council meetings. Everyone is too afraid to move him.
But he’s also nice(?) to servants and anyone who isn’t cruel about magic. Which is why he gets along with Geoffrey.
He sees a noble he knows to be anti-magic, especially during the purge, yelling at a servant and jumps in, scratching the noble so they leave and then meowing at the servant before leaving.
If anyone else has any ideas for this, please share. I wanna hear them.
(How I imagine Kilgharrah as a cat below the split)

honestly the choice to make geoffrey of monmouth a character in merlin is one of the funniest things the writers could have done. we know the myth survives and that arthur's story 'will live long in the minds of men', so we can assume that the major arthurian works were still written, including historia regum britanniae and prophetiae merlini, both of which were written by geoffrey. knowing this, we have two possible avenues of interpretation open to us: 1) that geoffrey had no idea what was going on, which seems fairly unlikely. and 2) that he knew full well that what he was writing was pure bullshit and gave precisely zero fucks about it, and i for one think that is hilarious.

Snow and Dirty Rain (Merlin)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Richard Silken, "Snow and Dirty Rain" // BBC Merlin
Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4
-
it's finally here! the fourth and final part!!!
this one was hard, I had the most trouble with the last three pictures. I really wanted to include Elena and Mithian as well as Geoffrey, but they just... didn't really fit. it was objectively awful. sorry for that. so I reached out to @shana-rosee , and they threw me a few ideas! it was their call to have Geoffrey last - and they might not have realized it, but it turned out great for the symbolism, as I'll point out below. so thank you for that! (/gen) but yeah, today it was just bugging me and I NEEDED to get it done, and I think it turned out pretty good!
so the first image is alluding to part 3, where the line "if this isn't a kingdom, i don't know what is" is assigned to Arthur. for "the hunter's heart" I had the unicorn horn, because it showed that Arthur was pure of heart. for "the hunter's mouth" I had Leon, (yay! Leon!) because he's Arthur's advisor, and speaks for him.
I was DETERMINED to get Leon, Hunith, and Gaius in this one, and I'm so glad I did.
Tristan and Isolde have their line to represent, honestly, what they did in the show - a reflection of Merlin and Arthur, and how their great love (filled with magic, secrets, and war), ends in tragedy.
Hunith and Gaius are there to represent "the space between the trees", as they are Merlin's sanctuary, his parental figures, the ones who know about his magic and love him - not in spite of, but for it. and of course I had to have Gaius casting a spell for the gold line!
for the last three, it got a little complicated, but I figured it out.
for "the words frozen," I did the moment that Arthur and Merlin became officially forever connected - when Uther assigned Merlin as Arthur's servant after he saved his life. the knife in the throne, the speechless moment that followed.
for "the creatures frozen.", I had the most difficult time with. Shana suggested the Lamia, which was a great idea, but I didn't think that it quite fit with the rest. so instead, I did Dragoon at Camlann. that lightning is the moment that even a fraction of Merlin's true power is shown. Dragoon is representative of Merlin being allowed to be his true self, and the consequences that come with it. Merlin can literally freeze creatures using his words - a la spells, or, more fitting, dragonspeak. people also freeze in terror or awe at the very mention of the name Emrys. so yeah, I think it worked out quite well!
and lastly, for "Explaining will get us nowhere." as i said, Shana suggested Geoffrey here, likely because of his love of the library. that reason was actually why I considered putting him under "the words frozen," but I realized putting him last was much better. why?
well, because Geoffrey of Monmouth was a real person. who, you ask, exactly is he? well, just "one of the major figures in the development of British historiography and the popularity of tales of King Arthur." yeah, in case you didn't know, Geoffrey the record keeper in BBC Merlin was an allusion to the man who helped carry Arthur's tale throughout the years.
so, why "explaining will get us nowhere?" well, because, if you accept BBC's Merlin as the true canon, then Geoffrey recorded it wrong! lol.
(in line with this, if you haven't read it already, go read @katherynefromphilly 's We Begin Again series. it's absolutely incredible, well worth the long read, and will leave you wanting more! in a good way, I promise. in it, Merlin in the present day goes out of his way to fix everything history got wrong, and it's incredible. also I distinctly remember there being fish in little pond things indoors, which was a super cute detail.)
-
so, that's the last of my Snow and Dirty Rain/Merlin series. I went a little overboard explaining things, but it was just so fun finding and linking the symbolism!! I hope you all enjoyed!
(p.s. I'm planning to make more of Snow and Dirty Rain, but with twelveclara/whouffaldi from Doctor Who. if you're interested in that or other things I make, check out my richard siken or original post tags in my blog.)

Merlin: So Gwaine and I really got into it on the pub, and around drink number five, I realized we should move in together.
Arthur, confused: You and Gwaine?
Merlin: What no, you and me.
Arthur, relieved: Oh! Yes, that makes so much more sense.

I think its genuinely ironic how this statement from Malory quite aptly describes Geoffrey's Arthur...

Geoffrey: We call them the Angry Commoner Letters. Every commoner who ever got a bad advice would write a nasty letter to Uther about it.
Arthur: So you're saying this is all hate mail?
Geoffrey: Well, I don't know if I'd call it all "hate" mail. It ranges from "mild dislike" mail to "extreme abhorrence" mail...
Merlin: How about "I wish you were dead" mail?
Geoffrey: Oh, we have those, too. Back here.

Hello, I saw your answer (and therefore explanation) of Gawain and his many lovers and wondered if you also had some insights into the relationship between Kay and Bedivere? Was that a solely adventure buddies kinda thing or a little bit more perhaps? Anyways I hope you have a lovely evening
hey there!
oh yay i love them! i incorporated a lot of bedivere into my kay webweaving post and in my book series i modeled their relationship after real life knights sir john clanvowe and sir william neville. let's get into it! :^)
for starters, kay and bedivere are two of the oldest arthurian characters, so their "history" is long. which is very fun! in the mabinogion, kai and bedwyr refer to each other as "companions." the word is sometimes applied to all members of arthur's fellowship (ie "companion" of the round table) but i really enjoy the idea that it can speak to a deeper connection than "coworker." let's look at a couple passages.
in culhwch and olwen, kai and bedwyr are sent by arthur on a quest. their introductions are back to back with a list of their fun magical powers. notably, bedwyr's opens like this.
Tumblr media
they are the definition of "comes as a set, do not separate." their apparent inseparability becomes a theme from here. later, kai works some blacksmithing, prompting this exchange.
Tumblr media
literally what is this supposed to mean? if "companion" refers to all of arthur's men, then explain this...wild. off to a strong start. then comes the rescue of mabon, where kai and bedwyr ride together on the back of a huge salmon.
Tumblr media
and here's some kickass artwork of this adventure by margaret jones, which i scanned for all to read!
Tumblr media
but wait, there's more. last note about the mabinogion is that kai has his own turn of phrase referring to bedwyr's missing hand, which can seem a bit mean-spirited, but is received as more of an inside joke.
Tumblr media
crazy stuff. okay. brace yourself for our boy geoffrey of monmouth's the history of the king's of britain. here kay and bedivere gain roles that go hand in hand, seneschal and cupbearer ("server" and "butler" in this translation). when arthur has to fight and kill the giant of mon saint michael, he chooses only two people to bring with him. guess who.
Tumblr media
later, during the war, they are assigned to co-command one of the factions.
Tumblr media
and then.....the ending. bedivere is slain, and kay sacrifices himself in the effort to retrieve his body.
Tumblr media
sick and twisted narrative choices, geoff. i'm looking away.
to answer your question, yeah, i think together they make the most wonderfully annoying middle management married couple in camelot and menace all their employees in an ever-revolving door of "go ask my husband" that drives everyone mad. arthur finds it highkey hilarious<3
thanks for asking!

So I know the Merlin writers included Geoffrey of Monmouth as a character as a nod to the irl one who wrote King Arthur's legend (one of them at least). But I think it would be funny in canon if Merlin was the one/paid someone to write it. And decided to use the name Geoffrey of Monmouth bc he remembered him as a great librarian

WANTED❗️any folklorists/historians/neurodivergents with hyperfocus out there, who have had a merlin/arthuriana obsession in their lives, willing to help me out with my MA research?
i will be focusing on the character of Merlin and my questions are:
1) "The Legend of Merlin" by M. Gaster - any idea how to get my hands on that? (as a lowly european citizen)
2) was there a break in the continuity of creating works about Merlin once upon a time? like, i.e., the guy's been popular up until the 16th century and then got lost before the 1930's Adventure Comics came out? if so, article recommendation is needed and welcome.
3) any significant work that forced creators to consider him as more than a background character?
4) any worthy commentary on/analysis of the BBC's Merlin? one that has actual constructive criticism.
i will be very much obliged.

Malory’s book plunges into action, starting with the war between Uther and Gorlois. Many English Arthurian works, from Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Brittaniae onward, begin with a history of England, however brief, tracing England back to heroic roots. Arthur is thus put in the context of being a custodian or reviver of a great, fading tradition.
Malory, by cutting out the preceding history, places Arthur in the role of creator of tradition. In consequence, chivalry is not presented as a timeless ideal but as a human creation. Arthur begins faced with a savage world. There is no authority but power, and so his initial chivalry is little more than the capacity for effective violence. Might makes right, allies are those who help one fight, enemies are those who oppose one, and anything can be fought for. Communities are small, unstable, and defined by self-interest. Uther wants Igrayne, so he takes her, with no moral judgment offered from Merlin or the barons.Attempts to establish some kind of other authority fail dramatically. Uther’s deathbed charge to his barons that they give Arthur the throne has no effect. Likewise, the sword in the stone does not make Arthur king immediately; it is the threat of an uprising by the commons (who choose to interpret the sword and stone as a sign from God, although Malory never explicitly endorses this) that wins Arthur the crown (16; I.7).
– Kenneth Hodges, Forging Chivalric Communities in Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur

Gwen: my dad’s a blacksmith :)
