Hello everyone! I'm sorry for being on such a long hiatus, I've had a lot going on lately and I want to further discuss it because academic burnout is real and it's easy to ignore your body and mind's signals until you're feeling like you've lost control of everything.
I didn't post much during my fall semester because I experienced my worst academic burnout; I had lost the motivation to study and put effort in general. I was skipping all of my classes and barely passing my exams. I failed a class. I was at the lowest point of my academic career...
This semester I took a different approach with my scheduling of classes and methods of studying. I gave myself more time to absorb the material for each class and ask questions if needed. I'm holding myself accountable to attend ALL of my classes, even if they are livestreamed (my university has the policy that large lectures are livestreamed).
In terms of self care, I'm forcing myself to dress up more rather than wearing the usual sweatpants and hoodie to class. I've found that dressing up motivates me to go outside and be seen!
What I'm trying to say with this long post is to bear with me; some days I might be posting a lot and some I might be silent as a rock. But I'm trying.
If you've made it this far, thank you so much for reading all of this! If you're in a similar situation and want to talk about it, feel free to message me <3

Once upon a time, Twitter made me forlorn because someone went viral mocking geoscientists for licking rocks. I get geos are a bit weird even among scientists and are a bit more blunt with our toolset, but licking rocks is a real strategy not just some joke. Taste and texture can be diagnostic!
The easiest way to identify between similar-looking halite vs sylvite is salty vs sour. Identifying sand vs clay is the cutoff between gritty or not: you can do it by chewing or by rubbing a spitty sample across the wrinkles in your palm, but either way saliva is involved. Fossils (and pots and bones!) stick to your tongue. While the vast majority of rocks have the exceedingly dull taste profile of licking a granite countertop or a nearby window, for the few exceptions it’s a valuable characteristic that will immediately inform you exactly what you’re holding.
You don’t need to lick rocks; it’s just faster and easier.
I don’t lick every wild rock I meet and licking lab samples is just gross. But if you’re out doing field rock identification, you already know enough to keep your tongue away from arsenopyrite and don’t waste your time nibbling granite.
Not all geoscientists lick rocks. I’m a geophysicist—95% of my rock identification is recreational, and I can easily go a year since I last licked a rock. But it’s not an inherently ridiculous concept worthy of mockery.
Anyway, you already licked a rock today. You just didn’t notice.

Also had a throwback to my undergrad days in Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology when I studied the Barrovian Sequence. I just remember driving through all different parts of NY state examining parts of the sequence.

I have a seminar about sharks in my geology lecture ^^
and i love how i didn't even have to fight for it, everyone saw the word "shark" and was like "yeah, where is the insane shark guy, this is his topic, no one else can have it"

help me me a college decision
Essentially I'm a biochem major, but I signed up for a minerology class for funzies (and also because I'm considering a minor/double major in geology). But this particular class is very time consuming and difficult, and I'm already taking a chem lab and organic chemistry. I love the content and the TAs are amazing, but idk if it's worth the time and money.

Hello! Today all of my classes got canceled so I spent the day studying for my orgo exam by making a mind map. I love using mind maps to summarize information!
I also got new noise canceling headphones and they help me so much with focusing on my work
