In front of Pancake House.
Lady Mariella: Mama, please forgive me!
Lady Quill: Whatever for?!
Lady Mariella: I made a fool of myself...
Tumblr media
Lady Quill: Mariella, this is nonsense. Everyone told me how lovely you are, Christine even mentioned that-
Lady Mariella: But, Mama, I saw the way Lady Landgraab looked at me, and when Lady Schenk asked about getting married, you saw how she reacted. I am a fool!
Lady Quill: Let me tell you a story about the high and mighty Lady Nancy Landgraab, which you are now old enough to hear. She often acts especially proper and wellbred, because her own son, John, was either cast out of the family, or left voluntarily; either way, he was disinherited. He is now an entertainer in some dodgy bar or club. And her husband’s title and the entire fortune will go to the second son, Malcolm, who is so despicable, no woman in their right mind will marry him. You, on the other hand, are a Pancakes. Do not concern yourself with her opinion of you. And while Clara Bjergsen is a dear friend of mine, her opinion of her daughter is slightly skewed. For years she has tried to pass off Sofia as a musical prodigy, while she is average at best.
Tumblr media
Lady Mariella: How can I even hope to find a husband? Oh, Mama...
Lady Quill: Darling, Darling... do not cry. Why would you not? You are young, beautiful, from a good family... you had the best teachers and governesses and you have a direct bloodline to the King. Why would anyone refuse you?
Lady Mariella: I don’t know...
Tumblr media
Lady Quill: You will see. The war will soon be over, and all the young men coming back from the war will be part of the season, and you will have your pick. And if there is nobody you like this year, you will find someone next year. All you lack is confidence. I hope you will soon see the wonderful person the rest of us see.
Tumblr media
Lady Mariella: Do you mean it, Mama? I do not have to marry if not for love?
Lady Quill: I do, my dear. I do not wish for you to be unhappy. And it is a tradition in this family to not marry at once. Look at Juliet and Valeria, neither of them are married. Although I believe their time might be coming. But we will not discuss this anymore tonight. I’m sure your father is waiting with dinner.
Lady Mariella: Thank you, Mama.

Lady Georgeshire: “Eliza, Darling! So good of you to come this far!”
Tumblr media
Lady Quill: “Of course, dearest Christine, thank you for the invitation. And thank you for including my Mariella.”
Lady Georgeshire: “Oh surely, it’s time for her to participate in such gatherings, where else would she hear all the gossip?”
Tumblr media
Lady Georgeshire: “Welcome to Georgeshire, Mariella, how lovely to see you again.”
Lady Mariella: “Good day, Duchess. You are too kind to invite me.”
Lady Georgeshire: “You’re quite welcome, child. I hope your journey was not too tiresome.”
Tumblr media
Lady Mariella: “I was glad to make it, Ma’am. Though I must admit, I surely will forget all my manners and speak out of turn since I am so nervous.”
Lady Quill: “Mariella!”
Lady Georgeshire: “Oh, don’t worry, Eliza. You know, Mariella, when I was invited to my first tea with a friend of my mother’s, I dropped a piece of cake with jam and cream right on the front of my dress. I thought I would die of embarrassment, haha.”
Tumblr media
Lady Georgeshire: “But surely, nothing will happen today. Besides, we are an informal round today; just friends, no male guests. We only want to enjoy each other’s company and hear the news from the war; that’s why that frightfully common Nancy Landgraab is here. So come in, my dears, let’s have some tea!”

More Guests Arrive at Georgechester!
Lady Georgeshire greets the rest of her guests: Lady Nancy Landgraab, Lady Bella Goth, and the Lady Elizabeth Pancakes, the Marchioness of Quill, with her daughter, Lady Mariella, who will make her debut in the coming season and seems rather nervous on one of her first social outings.
Now that everyone has arrived, the party can begin! Let’s hope the tea is ready...

Lady Georgeshire: Once again, welcome to Georgechester, dear ladies! Although it feels almost improper to meet like this during war times, I’m glad to see all of you.
Lady Quill: Nobody could find fault with inviting a few friends over, Christine, I’m sure. It might be different with a large house party, but informal tea like this; besides, all our husbands are either at the front or at the capital, doing their bit, so we deserve it.
Lady Georgeshire: Quite right! And if anyone takes issue with us, they may take it up with the King of Escon who decided to raise his weapons against our Anland.
Tumblr media
Lady Spencer-Kim: I had some qualms about coming, I did not want our tenants to say that I do not support the war, or that I take it too lightly. But my mother in law urged me to come, and now that I am here, I am glad I came.
Lady Eiridon: I am also glad I came. After all, we have only seen each other once since the war started. What about you, Bella?
Lady Goth: I am glad about cake and good company.
Lady Eiridon: Quite right...
Tumblr media
Lady Landgraab: I must say, my husband tells me the most horrific things about the war. (Everyone listens up) My dear Landgraab wrote to me that the Esconites fight quite visciously, and that they have organized a trap recently for our men which they almost fell for. And the brutality of their soldiers is bound to be legendary; our own Prince Charles came to know that recently, when he was slashed by an Escon sword all the way through the face.
Tumblr media
Lady Mariella: Good Lord! How horrible for him!
Tumblr media
Lady Schenk: Do you know His Royal Highness, Mariella?
Lady Mariella: Yes, Ma’am, I... He is my cousin, as you know, so we have visited the palace often.
Lady Schenk: How lovely for you! But surely, Nancy, he must have survived!
Tumblr media
Lady Landgraab: He has, of course. My Landgraab says that if the wound had been even an eighth of an inch deeper, he would have been beyond saving. But in his last letter to me, Landgraab already spoke of him fighting again, with renewed anger in his heart.
Lady Quill: Poor Charles, even before his mother’s death, he had always been a bit gloomy, but afterwards... he never truly was himself again.
Tumblr media
Lady Eiridon: My Dom doesn’t talk about the war in his letters. He only speaks about our daughters, how he hopes they will never have to go through what the people at the Escon border have to suffer; and about the plight of the soldiers. But nothing about what is actually happening or about strategy. What about Lord Goth, Bella?
Lady Goth: No, he doesn’t speak about it to me either. Mortimer believes I am too delicate to hear about these things, and he doesn’t want me to worry too much. But of course, the birds fly high and I fly with them.
Lady Georgeshire: Uh... How marvelous...
