TODAY’S FROZEN MOMENT - 45th Anniversary — March 7th, 1979 Here was Ray Charles, soaking up the love, taking in his standing ovation, after he sang to a joint session of Georgia Legislature, in Atlanta, when they made his version of Hoagy Carmichael’s “Georgia On My Mind” the official state song. Sweet.

Ray (2004)
😎🎹
This biographical film depicts the rise of rhythm and blues musician Ray Charles from his tragic, poverty-stricken childhood to his life-changing success.
Jamie Foxx plays the lead while the supporting cast includes: Kerry Washington as Ray’s wife Della Bea Robinson, Clifton Powell as tour manager Jeff Brown, Aunjanue Ellis as vocalist Mary Ann Fisher, Harry Lennix as DJ and businessman Joe Adams, Terrence Howard as Gossie McKee, Larenz Tate as record producer and collaborator Quincy Jones, Curtis Armstrong as record executive Ahmet Ertegun, Richard Schiff as music journalist Jerry Wexler and Regina King as Raelette/R&B singer (and mistress) Margie Hendricks.
Not only was Jamie Foxx born to play the role, he actually impersonates both the groovy and musical nature of Ray Charles with massive talent (the actor himself grew up playing piano among other accomplishments, revealed in his memoir Act Like You Got Some Sense and Other Things My Daughters Taught Me). What’s more, Foxx’s electrifying performance as the legendary entertainer won him various accolades, including the Oscar for Best Actor.
Ray Charles was also an innovative pioneer, developing his own style of R&B with gospel to create an entire new genre. Back then, no one changed tunes, but he came up with the idea to increase the music of his generation and turn it into a swinging beat. He even took his piano skills to another level with jazz, country and pop music. All that artistry labeled him as “The Genius of Soul”.
One personal issue Ray dealt with all his life was his blindness. Despite the lack of treatment, he became an independent survivor as his melodic capabilities shone a new light for him and knocked down barriers in unimaginable ways. Jamie Foxx even goes deeper inside Ray Charles’ skin by appearing blind in an authentic way.
Along the way, he and some of his colleagues became addicted to heroin at a time when the drug culture of the 20th century was thriving. That habit was mostly his way of trying to cope with occasional bouts of depression and nervous breakdowns. With the system threatening his career and reputation, he eventually quit after years of professional treatment in rehab.
The story of Ray Charles contrasts the rough environment of his past with his gradual ascension to fame and fortune. At first, people were underestimating his ambition and intelligence. But he was determined to prove them wrong as he played to boost the music industry while receiving attention from black and (eventually) white audiences.
The movie gives an inside look at the inspiration behind Ray Charles’ original hit songs from “Mess Around” to “Georgia on My Mind”, which became the official state song of Georgia.
Finally, Ray was able to overcome every obstacle to become an influential musician who revolutionized the world. If you have the same taste in music as Ray Charles and love the multitalented Jamie Foxx, I highly recommend this lively, moving biopic. But then again, if some of you don’t think Jamie Foxx is anything like Ray Charles, you might as well “Hit the Road, Jack”.
