Narcissus by Gerard van Kuijl is a 114 cm x 143 cm painting and the media used is oil on canvas. This painting depicts a young man Narcissus sitting at the waters edge and looking at his own reflection within the water. There is a strong color difference between Narcissus and the environment, the environment is dark which makes you focus most of your attention on Narcissus. This artwork was a product of the Dutch Golden Age. Kuijl was well known for his religious works and was believed to see the first version of Narcissus which resided in Italy. This artwork shows that Kuijl put his own spin on one of the most famous paintings and highlights the message of the art by doing so. This artwork is very easy to understand because it is depicting such a famous story. The message is that once you become too obsessed with your own self and image, it will eat your life away. In the Narcissus’s story, he never left the water edge and died there, now a flower holds his name. Kuijl highlights this message even more by the use of light and shadow contrast that was influenced by Caravaggio. Kuijl uses this contrast so frequently that even the water in this painting is black. The shadow and light contrast is used to show that Narcissus’s obsession is consuming his life and the dark / shadow is consuming the painting. The importance of this artwork to society and the world is that this painting teaches us that becoming too obsessed with one’s self ends up being their demise. The painting shows the consequences for their obsession and we see how isolated Narcissus is. I think Kuijl made sure that he used more unity than variety because he wanted to keep that feeling of pure isolation when looking into this painting. The biggest factors in this painting are the color contrast and the use of unity to convey a sense of loneliness. I picked this artwork because it intrigued me at first and slowly I started to pick up on things. Then after researching and finding out the meaning of this artwork, I was able to pick up what I saw and relate it to the meaning. I like this painting because of that eerie feeling I got once I understood why Kuijl contrasted the light and dark idea throughout the painting.

VISUAL ANALYSIS
The work of art Narcissus from Gerard Van Kuijl is an oil on canvas painting. The dimensions of the painting are about 4.8 feet width and about 3.7 feet hight, so it is relatively big, and it looks bigger in person. The main subject in the painting is a man that is looking at his reflection in the water. He has brown curly hair, and he has a serious face with blushing cheeks. The guy is covered with a red mantel, and he is only wearing light brown sandals.
The artist use a lot of dark colors in the background to represent the forest, and the few vibrant colors that he used are red, pastel blue, and a light warm pink. The bright red is used to represent the mantel and it can signify all the emotions of the guy, such as passion, love, anger, and vigor. The mantel has many lines with shadows and points of light, this is because the artist wanted to make it look very flattery with also harmony and rhythm. The body of the man is very brilliant and bright. Kuijl used circular patterns and high contrast on the body to make defined muscles, so that he could highlight the beauty and the masculinity of the man. On the top right corner, the artist painted a spot of sky, and It is the only colorful spot in the background. The artist used different shades of blue: from intense blue to pastel and lighter blue to blend the colors together. The color blue in this work of art can signify calm, peace, and trust. The overall painting has a lot of contrasts that have unity and variety, and there is a balance of emotions that go from anger to peace. Proportion is mainly emphasized in the body of the man; for instance, the hands, legs, feet, face, and arms are very proportionate to the unity of the painting. The contrast and the colors make the painting harmonic and unique.
This painting makes me feel empathic towards the guy. I like how this painting makes me feel because I can really feel all the emotions that the man has. I can understand that the man has a sense of self pride, but at the same time he is not fully happy, and also he seems very exhausted of something that has happened to him. I feel like this because of the way he is looking at himself and how he is seated down. Another detail that makes me feel like this is his right hand on the chest that gives me a sense of rancor but at the same time of sadness.
Kuijl was a Dutch painter, and he was from Gorinchem which is a city in the Netherlands. He was famous because he made paintings that have similar styles of Caravaggio. Kuijl’s styles is very identifiable for its realism and for the use of the chiaroscuro technique, which is the use of shadow and light. Kuijl made this painting to represent the story of a Greek myth. The painting is about this beautiful man that is in love with himself. This happened after a nymph made some magic on him and made him fall in love with his own reflection, so that he was not able to love anyone else or anything else. Because the man was only caring about his beauty and loving himself, he then dies.
This art work is a mythological painting, and it is associated with the period of Renaissance and Baroque, and it was made about in 1645. It was then commissioned by John and Marble Ringling Museum of Art. This painting shows that this artist really liked Caravaggio’s style, and he decided to repurpose this painting in a similar style. From this painting, Kuijl is trying to say that it is not good to only think about yourself because it can lead to depression and not being able to love anyone else, and therefore being alone for the entire life. This message is very clear because I can see that the man in the painting is not happy and he looks lonely.
Overall, I chose this painting because when I saw it I immediately felt the pain that the guy has from his face expression. I also like the colors and the contrast that the artist used because they make the painting simple but at the same time with many emotions, and with a clear message.

VS #3 (VISUAL ANALYSIS)
Title: Narcissus
Date: ca. 1645
Artist: Gerard van Kujl
Media: oil on canvas
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gerard van Kuijl was a Dutch painter from the Golden age who specialized in oil paint. He was heavily influenced by the style of Caravaggio and centered his work around religion and mythology. He lived in Rome from 1629 to 1631. Some believe he may have seen the original Narcissus by Caravaggio. In Kuijl's Narcissus, he used oil on canvas, with the dimensions 45 x 56 3/8 in. (114.3 x 143.2 cm). I went to the Ringling museum, and this painting instantly stood out. The man in the image was young, handsome, and charming. I wondered why he was staring into the water. What has captured the undived attention of this ethereal man?
I soon discovered this painting is about a greek myth- Narcissus. A young man cursed by the nymph Echo (after rejecting her) to fall in love with his reflection waste away and dies. Kuijl was able to represent this greek myth ideally by elegantly using two simple things, Narcissus and the river. The painting itself has no distinct shapes, geometric or abstract. The color palette is limited, composed of primarily dark shades— and dramatic use of light and shadows. In the upper right corner, strokes of blue with white stratus-like clouds pop out. The beautiful and youthful Narcissus is draped in deep red cloth and is staring at himself in the river, entranced with his reflection. Kuijl strategically places shadows and light to make this painting come to life. Narcissus's body is the focus of the image, and his relaxed yet perfectly poised posture adds balance. He is sitting up with one leg bent horizontal to the water and the other bent upright. Stretched out is one arm, and the other is turned inward toward his own body, flat with the water. The water is unnatural, so dark it almost appears black and bottomless. The only light source in the dark abyss is the reflection of Narcissus's palm and fingers reaching back to himself and a slightly rippled reflection of one of his legs. The simplistic nature of the picture adds to its unity.
One can sense that the man in the painting is lost, almost as if he is in a trance as he looks down into the water. Yet, his face holds a soft smile as if in love. Seeing and reading about the picture invoked an extreme curiosity inside me. How can someone die from self-admiration? Then I thought, I'm living in an age where you can not escape social media and the constant pressure to look beautiful and be picture-perfect. I started to doubt and question society and the emphasis on vanity. Will this generation continue to obsess over our looks and how others may perceive us? Will we all waste away too as Narcissus? What kind of future lies if everyone is overly entwined and captivated by their appearances? After observing this beautiful work of art, I realized that, centuries later, humans haven't changed. We are just as narcissistic then as we are now.

(Painting of Narcissus from the mid 1640, sometimes attributed to Gerard van Kuijl.)
I have a personal connection with the story this painting tells. I read quite a few versions of the myth when I was very young but the story had stagnated for me, become frozen in time. Until I saw this painting.
I found this painting while searching artstor for a work of Caravaggio's by the same name, which was created some 40 years earlier.
Caravaggio’s Narcissus was the first depiction of the myth I ever saw, rendered in black-and-white in a little book of Greek and Roman mythology which I borrowed from the Hawaii State Public Library System, and which served as the jumping off point for my studies in the subject. Though I saw other images of him later, the Narcissus in Caravaggio’s painting would be how I thought of him for a long time.
Tumblr media
(Painting called “Narcissus,” by Carravaggio, circa 1597–1599.)
That painting, as full of sorrow as it is for the subject, was never very moving for me. A young man, obsessed with himself and unable to care about others, seemed to me neither especially sad nor especially uncommon. In myth, Narcissus was unaware at first that the beauty he had fallen for was nothing more than the reflection of his own face, by which foolishness I was also unimpressed. The painting by an unknown Dutch artist is special to me because it changed my perpception of a story which I have always thought of as mine.
It did so because this Narcissus is suspended in time at a different part of his story than Caravaggio’s. Caravaggio’s youth is aware of his situation and is filled with pain and longing for himself. He looks on with sorrowful eyes at the love of his life, whom he knows he can never reach.
This Narcissus is different. His expression is soft, his gaze holds intent and longing, but not yet desperation or grief. His hand is outstretched, reaching out toward the beautiful young man he has fallen for. His fingers are just about to brush the surface of the water and find that it is cold.
The tragedy of Echo is that she loves a person who could never love her back; this piece showed me that the tragedy of Narcissus is the same.

Narcissus, c. 1645 by Gerard van Kuijl
The painting, Narcissus, is made of oil on a canvas. The painting is 114 cm x 143 cm large. There are a few colors and shapes used in this painting. For shapes, there is the defined circular shape of the man’s muscles in his arm. The painting is mostly a dull color, with pops of color in the mans red skirt and a bright blue in the background for the sky. The subject represented is a man named Narcissus, based on Greek mythology. The work is designed to bring your eyes to the emphasized man sitting near the water. Shadows and lighting are used to bring emphasize to the man staring at his reflection in the water. The background is fairly dull, and the man himself highlighted by the sun. The work is not so much balanced as a whole but balanced in proportion. The man is painted to look accurate to real life size with his surroundings. There is variety in the painting, with a human figure and nature, that brings everything together to look unified. I would say this work makes me feel calm. These feelings are evoked because of the way the man is just calmly staring at himself in the water. It looks like he does not have a thought behind his eyes but himself.
The artist behind this work, Gerard van Kuijl, is associated with Dutch culture. Kuijl was a Dutch painter and a follower of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, whom which he drew inspiration for this painting from. Kuijl settled in Rome between 1629 and 1631. There, he saw Caravaggio’s Narcissus. The object of the painting, a man named Narcissus, is based on a Greek mythological story. Narcissus was a young boy who rejected a nymph named Echo. She died after being rejected. When she died, he was made to fall in love with his reflection. Since Narcissus was too intrigued with himself to look away, he too, perished. When he died, he was transformed into a flower.
The movement the artwork is associated with is the Dutch Golden Age (1588-1672). At this time, human figures were the primary focus of the canvas. This is shown in Narcissus, with the main human subject being Narcissus. What the artwork says about the artist who made it, Kuijl, is that he was heavily inspired by Caravaggio. Kuijl was known for being inspired by the Caravaggist style. That is, lots of shading with baroque shapes. I can tell what the artist is trying to say in their art. I think the artist clearly got the negative vanity message across with the man just staring at himself in a pool of water.
This work of art is very important to society. In the 1600s, and even now, this art has a strong message. From the story of Greek mythology, the message of being aware of your own vanity is clearly shown. Kuijl did a great job of trying to paint what he is expressing here. This art is telling us that beauty is not everything. This message really inspired me because I think it relates a lot to society today. We put beauty standards on a higher level than a lot of other valuable things in life. Today, people worry so much about their looks, like Narcissus, and become full of themselves. Narcissism is more than just being stuck on yourself though.  It is when you project yourself in a way that creates a false reality. You are in a fantasy with yourself, like Narcissus here, being entranced by his own reflection.
