untitled thoughts about blackout poetry and being trans, november 15 2023. text transcript under the cut
“transness is a bit like blackout poetry i think
you're taking what was handed to you
a body
a page of words
and saying this isn't suitable
i'm going to change it
to fix it
to cut it into a shape i like better
and there's that one quote everyone circulates around
"god made trans people for the same reason he made grapes but not wine or wheat but not bread”
and i'm not religious
never really have been, as far as i remember
only ever prayed once in my life
so i dont agree with the god bit of it, as such
but the divinity of creation
the inherent power in taking a sheet of paper
that says
"you're such a beautiful girl. you'll be a woman someday."
and scribbling all over it, blacking out words until it just says
"boy."
that i can get behind
and there's something there about inspiration too, i guess
about taking another person's words and making them your own
or about knowing you're a boy
but not quite knowing how to be a boy
not yet at least
and borrowing until you're a shape that kind-of sort-of makes sense
dean-winchester-cocky with gerard-way-red hair not quite original
but yourself all the same
or as close as you can get to it by reshaping this body that didn't start out as your own”
