Valentine's Day Ficlet - Erik is a romantic
Thank you for sending me all these lovely Valentine prompts/ideas! I'm not sure I'll get to all of them but they are very much appreciated thanks!!!
-----
arcanewinter said: Erik invites Charles to do something that Erik, and only Erik, considers to be deeply romantic. Charles gets it, though.
“So, where are we going?” Charles asks as soon as he gets settled in the front seat. It’s been driving him crazy all day, not knowing, because frankly Charles hates surprises as much as Erik hates planning them. “Is it that new restaurant I’ve been dying to try? It’s too early for dinner so are we going for a late lunch?”
Erik smirks as he pulls out of the driveway, and shakes his head. “No Charles. We’re not going to ’Anthony’s’. That place is ridiculously overpriced and overrated.” Charles huffs and sinks back into the seat, knowing that he can simply pluck the answer out of Erik’s head – the bastard’s not even shielding, like he’s daring Charles to break his promise – but won’t, because he doesn’t want to ruin the surprise. Whatever they’re doing, Erik’s been thinking about it for the past two weeks, and so it must be really important to him. And Charles is going to do his best to feign excitement, because Erik is terrible at romance, and is far more likely to take him shopping for a new mattress (‘memory foam is better for lower back pain, Charles’) than to whisk him off to a B&B upstate.
Actually, getting a new mattress wouldn’t be the worst thing to do on Valentine’s Day.
Still, he’s speechless when they pull into the lot of a Jewish cemetery, and Erik quickly parks and then goes to take his chair out of trunk. He knows where they are of course, even if he’s never been here himself; Erik’s parents are both buried here, and Erik’s been visiting them diligently once a month since he was sixteen years old.
Strangely, Charles doesn’t sense any sadness from the tenor of Erik’s thoughts; only thoughtfulness and a quiet anticipation as they approach the grave. Neither of them speak when they spot the double headstones, and Charles waits patiently as Erik places his hand on the marker and closes his eyes.
“I know this might seem silly to you, wanting to do this here. I don’t even talk anymore, when I visit. I stopped doing that years ago,” Erik says, with a hint of wistfulness as Charles squeezes his hand. “I just wanted them to meet you, and I wanted them with me when I do this.”
This is getting down on one knee in front of Charles and pulling a ring box out of his jacket pocket. He grins, wide and amused at the expression on Charles’ face and asks, “Charles Francis Xavier, will you marry me?”
“You bastard,” Charles says with tears in his eyes, “of course I’ll marry you. Yes, yes, yes!”
Erik smiles. “So, better than last year, yeah? When I got us arrested at the pro-mutant rally?”
Choking back a laugh, Charles answers, “Absolutely. Much, much better.”

fic stats meme
rules: give us the links to your fic with the most hits, second most kudos, third most comments, fourth most bookmarks, fifth most words, and fic with the fewest words.
Thank you for tagging me, @gerec! I was curious...
most hits: "Contingency," which makes sense because it's my only many-chaptered, novel-length fic (and the first thing I published!).
second most kudos: "Contingency" as well! My most-kudosed fic is the one with the...
third most comments: aka, "Special Topics in Mutant Studies," an enemies to friends to lovers fic in which Erik and Charles are rival professors at a small liberal arts college.
fourth most bookmarks: "just remember you are standing on a planet that’s evolving," also in an academic setting, but students this time (and friends with benefits who are bad at feelings).
fifth most words: "to put the world between us," my second-most recent fic, in which Erik is a semi-closeted A-list actor, and Charles...complicates things on multiple fronts.
fewest words: "Correspondence," the third installment in the "Contingency" (canon-divergent, early 60s) verse, which is just shy of 13K words lol, I cannot write short things, this was a real feat.
This was fun to look at! I'll tag @arcanewinter, @ikeracity, @joshriku, @rozf...and break out of X-Men Land with @destinationtoast. <333

Last Line Challenge
rules: in a new post, show the last line you wrote (or drew) and tag as many people as there are words (or as many as you feel like).
Thank you for the tag @insertmeaningfulusername!
Amazingly I actually have something to share because 911 and Buddie have inspired me to write fanfic again.
So here is a snippet from a recently started fic that is currently titled: YoutuberAU (I will eventually give it an actual title):
"Shannon had left them two months ago and Eddie still felt that he was barely hanging on to the fraying edges of his life.
He was suddenly a single father to a son he loved, but barely knew. He’d discovered quickly that he just didn’t know the things he needed to know, the things a father, a present father, would know. He didn’t know Christopher’s favourite foods to eat, or that one stuffed animal he had to sleep with every night to prevent a literal meltdown. He didn’t know what size shoes Chris wore, or if he could put his shirts on himself."
I will tag: @pinkoptics, @gerec, @ikeracity, @ongreenergrasses and @cal-daisies-and-briars

Tagged by the lovely lady @lolahardy … as well as @killym You are both beautiful souls and I thank you ❤️
Are you named after anyone: Not that I know of? My birthname is just something my mom liked. My chosen name is something *I* liked, lol.
When was the last time you cried: Today, actually. Got a bit emotionally overwhelmed. Still am, kinda. Fun times.
Do you have kids: Nope. Don’t want ‘em. If my future partner feels differently, maybe we can have a discussion. But that’s between me and them.
Do you use sarcasm a lot: Dude, sarcasm is my second language. I was quite fluent in it when I was a teenager. A bit less now, but I’m still familiar.
What sports do you play/have played: Aside from the ones I was forced into in school, ZERO.
What's the first thing you notice about people: Physically? Eyes, maybe. Which is ironic considering how averse to eye contact I am. Non-physically? Kindness. And humor, but mostly kindness.
What's your eye color: Brown
Scary movies or happy endings: Depends on how I’m feeling at the time. Right now, happy endings. But I do love scary movies.
Any special talents: Uhhhhhh, relentless optimism? Believing in the best of people, despite how many times my hope has been stomped on? If that doesn’t count, then idk.
Where were you born: Western Washington, near Seattle. In the city I currently reside in, actually. Different area, but still.
What are your hobbies: reading, writing, gaming, music. Every time I get asked this question, I immediately forget every single thing I like to do, lol.
Do you have pets: Yep! A sun conure and a border collie mix.
How tall are you: 5 foot 6 inches; about 169cm (I think?)
Favorite subject in school: History, easily. But it really depended on the teacher.
Dream job: Almost anything to do with writing. I’ve had the same dream since I was like 9, lol.
I’ll tag… @5ftjewishcactus @gerec @ghostrepeater @turtletotem @tigercublove and @tetchy-frog if they want to do it, of course❤️

For @gerec that asks me these questions:
What’s something new that you tried in a fic this year? How did it turn out and would you do it again?
A couple that I have never been particularly keen on, I have to admit. I'm usually pretty obsessed with the Erik/Shaw pairing, or, although I use it less often, the Erik/Logan pairing (Charles isn't really my cup of tea and I think it shows.) This year, however, I discovered (and thanks to you.) the Victor/Erik pairing. It was supposed to be marginal in a fic I was writing, but I've discovered that I like it a lot, so I think I'll be using it more often.
What fic was the most satisfying to finish writing?
The proposal was the first idea for the x men fandom. I have only the idea of it without knowing where this cold take me. I'm very glad to finish it.
What's something that surprised you while you were working on a fic? Did it change the story?
I was surprised by my need for a happy ending. In two fics I've written, the ending should have been tragic (in one, Erik and Charles shouldn't have ended up together, in the other, Erik should have actually died). I planned it all the way through and then I just couldn't write it. This proves that there is a romantic streak in me too, and I didn't think it was possible.
Thank you for the questions.

Ive seen more than one post about fanfics with latin titles being great from you
Have you read something you'd like to share with the class
AHEM.
That post was a joke, mostly because I love fanfics that are longer than 70k, and are filled with filthy sex, hence the excessive tagging. I am a shameless lover of smut who also happens to appreciate it when the author goes off the rails and literally writes like 40+ chapters of plot heavily infused with sex.
The Latin title reference was just a little nod and smile to those authors who call their stories cogito ergo sum or carpe diem or mea culpa or veni vidi vici or in vino veritas.
Not every long fanfic has a Latin title, but I have noticed quite a few filthy smut fics of variable length with Latin titles. Conversely, I have read a lot of non Latin titles with a ridiculous word count. They combined to form my meme post about Latin named fanfics that are super long, heavily tagged, and goated literature.
That being said.
I was thinking about two fics in particular and you ASKED so you're not allowed to judge me.
Not strictly in Latin but a Latin phrase nonetheless:
The stars incline us, they do not bind us - a Charles Xavier x Erik Lensherr fanfic by gerec and ikeracity that's literally a veritable novel and the best sex filled slow burn ever written:
Dis Alitur Vitum- another slow burn with a lot of sex, Chrollo x Kurapika (don't fucking judge me I just like enemies to lovers ok), literally doesn't start having graphic sex until 70k but when it starts, it's a doozy:
So there.
You combine these two together and you get basically the basis of those fanfic posts.

Ohh tell me about the Erik/Shaw wip please??? :D
oh my goddddd OKAY so my erik/shaw wip is a gift fic that I will SOMEDAY write for a friend. it. it’s not good. it’s bad. it’s very very bad in very very many ways.
IF I ever get around to it, it will feature the following tags (and some more, figured out if I ever get around to writing the porn): Extremely Dubious Consent, Consent Issues, May/December Relationship, Dom/Sub Undertones, Dom Sebastian Shaw, Top Sebastian Shaw, Possessive Sebastian Shaw, Bottom Erik Lehnsherr, Sub Erik Lehsnherr
does this give you a feel for what the fic is? if not, have some! (please look at the above tags and proceed with caution).
ask is from this list of the titles of all files in my WIP folder!
“S-Sir?” Erik's voice shook out of his chest. His throat was dry as he watched Sebastian watch him. His eyes felt heavy.
Sebastian smiled at him, but it wasn’t the nice smile Erik got sometimes. Erik loved Sebastian’s nice smile, because it always made his chest feel full and fluttery. “You want to be a good boy for me, don’t you, Erik?”
It wasn’t a question. Sometimes things were questions and sometimes they weren’t, and Erik had gotten really good over the years at knowing what each type sounded like. “Yes,” he still said, firmly, adding, “Yes, sir,” to be safe.
Sebatstian’s smile went kinder. There was still an edge to his grin, but there was a softness around his eyes, now. Erik had always loved that softness. “Very good, Erik.” The praise made him shiver. It always made him shiver. “And what do good boys do?”
Oh, Erik knew the answer to that one. “They listen,” he said readily, a smile on his face until he remembered why Sebastian was making sure he still knew the rules.
Sebastian had asked... he had asked...
“That’s right, very good,” Sebastian told him, and pulled Erik from his thoughts. “Are you going to be a good boy and listen to me, Erik?”
Erik sucked in a sharp breath and held it behind his teeth. His heart was racing very fast. He knew what he had to answer correctly. If he didn’t answer correctly, Sebastian would punish him. Neither of them liked when Erik had to be punished, but especially Erik, he thought. He took a very deep breath and felt his hands shaking.
“Y-Yes, sir.”

Thank you for your ask, dear @gerec!! 💜 (Something went very wrong with the read more button in the first post, hence the sketchy look of this one, sorry about that =.=‘’’)
For prompt number 12, “I think we need to talk”, from this list.
The more I thought about it, the more my mind went back to this post-XMDP AU (tl;dr: all of Genosha thinks we are a couple but we’re not since Cuba), so you get a little vignette of Cherik Classic Misunderstandings™ after they sleep together for the first time in thirty years.
(Also haha this was supposed to be a drabble but my hand slipped. Anyway, my counter tells me it’s exactly 800 words, so... success? ^^’’’’)
Enjoy!
---
“I think we need to talk.”
Charles doesn’t look away from his book. He lost focus as soon as he sensed Erik on his way back to his own house-container, mind geared in full battle mode, but he knows where his eyes will travel if he looks at Erik now. He can’t play himself like that.
“’Cause if you spend another day studiously ignoring me to avoid addressing what happened, Charles, I swear—”
“And what exactly happened?” He feels Erik’s mind lose its footing for a moment there. Good, Charles thinks. “Seriously, Erik, if you want to break up with someone, you should be in relationship first.”
There’s an angry stomping growing nearer just before his book gets torn away from his hands and thrown onto the small table, and then Erik’s face enters his visual field and, oh, the hickey on Erik’s neck is right where Charles remembered putting it, two days ago. Damn, why did he even look?
“Can we have this conversation like two normal human beings, without you trying to forage in my mind for petty reasons to fight?”
Like two normal human beings? Ah, that would be a first.
“I’m not trying to fight, I’m trying to understand what you want!” Charles pinches the bridge of his nose, steadying himself. He’s started yelling without meaning to. He breaths and begins anew, “You said that everyone here saw how close we are, how they all seem to think we’re sleeping together so we might as well. So we fuck, and then all you’re thinking about is how you’d rather go back to how things were before.” He looks up at Erik, who is staring at him with a somewhat betrayed frown. As if he didn’t propose this and then regret it himself. Even now, Charles realizes bitterly. “So, where have I gone wrong?”
“I kissed you, didn’t I?” Erik says, then makes a face, surprised at his own words, but resolves to pull through. “The morning after.”
“We were barely awake. How’s that relevant? You still thought it was a mistake.”
Erik doesn’t reply, just plops down onto the sofa beside him with a half-hearted huff.
“Do you expect every partner of yours to always be rational, or is it just me?” A sigh. “Yes, I thought that. But that’s not the only thing I thought. Which is why I didn’t tell you that.”
Charles feels his cheeks grow hot at the implication and bites back, awkwardly, “You’re not confused if you dread the eventuality of being with me.”
Erik takes his hand, making Charles’s stomach do something of a double flip. Part of him feels like his body should be covering the distance between them and just crash into Erik’s own. He thought thirty years apart had made him unlearn the sensation, but here he is again.
“You’re not afraid?” Erik asks, fingers interlacing with Charles’s. Of being with me, of being together again, of hurting each other again, he doesn’t say, but Charles hears it clear as day.
God, he wants to punch himself. And also Erik. And then kiss him and kiss him and never think of this ever again.
“I’m not,” he says. Erik looks uncertain, but it’s true. Charles knows for a fact that they’ll hurt each other again. They’ve been doing it all this time. The thing is, he doesn’t care. For all of their fights and years of separation, they have always found their way back to each other in the end.
Of course, he also knows he can’t tell Erik all that.
“Don’t be afraid of giving a name to this thing,” he says instead, drawing soothing circles with his thumb on Erik’s palm, “just because it didn’t end well last time.”
“That’s putting it mildly,” Erik says, his voice a little raspy by the end. He clears his throat. “Are you sure you want to give it another go?”
Charles brings up their joined hands and presses a kiss to Erik’s knuckles. “If you are.”
“What if it doesn’t work out?”
Charles smiles wickedly.
“We find each other in Paris in ten years and I’ll let you ravish me in a luxury hotel room.”
Some of Erik’s tension leaves the lines of his body, letting a spark of humour shine through. His free hand reaches out to cup Charles’s cheek, and this time, a wilful, almost undiluted desire for closeness accompanies his motion.
“You put too much faith in my stamina.”
Charles chuckles, and there it is, his body finally closing the distance between them as it should be. This close, he can feel Erik holding his breath, Erik’s gaze dropping to his mouth as he speaks.
“Then you’d better get down to it right away, don’t you?”
Erik doesn’t need Charles to tell him twice.

Would you ever write a mob au?
I don’t think I would. Organized crime gets weirdly romanticized, but in reality they’re just bullies, taking what they want from people weaker than them. And the mobster aesthetic is just not one that speaks to me. I’m not above reading a Mob AU now and then, if I like the pairing and the writer, but to get deep enough into it to write it myself? I just don’t see it happening.

✏️ Do you write every day?
Hah, if only ;) My writing brain usually only has two speeds--becalmed and gale force :P I plan something for days or weeks (or months or years...) and then (usually at about three in the morning) it all spills forth in one exhausting rush.
🏅 What is something you recently felt proud of in regard to your writing (finished a fic, actually planned for once, etc).
I wrote and finished two stories for Yuletide, which were the first writing projects I'd managed to fully complete in a long, long while, so that did make me feel rather accomplished (it was a very strange but rather wonderful feeling :)

Charles used to bring Erik flowers.
He used to bring flowers and chocolates and a hundred little gifts; gifts like Erik’s favorite pastries or a pair of butter soft leather gloves to replace the pair he’d misplaced. He wooed Erik with sincerity and endless patience – almost unheard of for an alpha – letting him dictate the nature and the pace of their on-again, off-again relationship. He loved Erik and did everything he could to convince him of that love; that he was Erik’s and Erik was his and he wanted nothing more than to spend their lives together and start a family of their own.
He asked Erik to marry him – once, twice, a hundred times, and each time Erik said no.
Now, he brings a faint air of bitterness and disappointment, but he’ll still come whenever Erik calls. He’ll push Erik up against the door and kiss him breathless, and go on his knees to worship Erik’s cock. He’ll strip Erik nude – sometimes impatiently and sometimes with great reverence – and work his fingers in Erik’s cunt until he’s going out of his mind with lust. He’ll spread Erik’s legs wide and fuck him slow and deep, or shove his face in the mattress and pound him on his hands and knees. He’ll grunt, or moan, or whisper ‘Erik’ as he comes, and spill inside an omega who refuses to be claimed.
Not again. Not by anyone.
Not even Charles.
-----
The phone rings, and Erik already knows what he’s going to say.
“I’m sorry, I can’t come over.”
“Why?”
“Erik, do we really have to do this every time?”
“Yes, we do.”
“Fine. Moira surprised me with dinner reservations at Chez Henri.”
“Tell her you’re busy.”
“I’m not doing this with you.”
“You promised—”
“She’s my wife.”
“Fuck you.”
-----
Charles comes over after his dinner and fucks Erik over the back of the couch. He’s angry and Erik is resentful and the sex is as incredible as it’s always been and always will be.
He leaves, and Erik doesn’t tell him that in seven months he’s going to be a father to twins.

First-lines-of-fic meme! I was tagged by @destinationtoast. 😘
Rules: share the first lines of ten of your most recent fanfics and tag ten people. If you have written fewer than ten, don’t be shy and share anyway.
So...I have published ten fics total, and rather than posting the first lines of every single one of them, I’m going to mix this up and do my five most recent as well as my five current WIPs, because I have somehow become a person with five substantially written WIPs, I cry. (This is clearly an attempt at public accountability, help lol).
All fics are X-Men, of course, and unless otherwise marked, Charles/Erik:
Published!
1. “to put the world between us” (25K words, actor AU)
The drive should take two hours, but Erik manages it in ninety minutes, using his powers to floor the gas pedal as he scrambles the occasional police scanner. When he whips into the hotel parking lot in a spray of gravel, Emma’s mental greeting is half is half warm, half weary.
2. “Unlived Histories (The Double Vision Remix)” (18K words, remix, time travel)
Erik didn’t know it then, but everything started to change on Charles’s sixteenth birthday.
3. “Correspondence” (13K words, part of a canon-divergent series set in 1963)
When Charles wakes, he stretches out his mind and then his arm, groping at the opposite side of the bed. Erik isn’t there, though the sheets are still warm.
4. “What We Inherit” (20K words, David & Charles, father-son bonding)
David first starts to suspect that something’s up when his father gets a phone call very early on Tuesday morning.
5. “the way it travels in and keeps emitting light” (29K words, accident and recovery, enemies to friends to lovers)
Erik lets himself into Raven’s building on Friday evening, waving a hand as the locks click open. As he rides the converted freight elevator up to the top floor, he sinks his powers into all those sturdy old pulleys and gears—one thing on the long list of reasons he prefers Raven’s apartment to his own.
WIPs!
(obviously these are not set in stone)
1. The “Charles bailing Erik out of jail” fic I am currently writing for @ikeracity for Fandom Trumps Hate! (Ike you get a sneak peek lol) (ps I'm legit obsessed with writing this fic rn, thank you again for your prompt):
“One phone call” is only a thing in the movies—but the cops don’t give you unlimited phone calls, either. This turns out to be a problem when all your friends were either arrested alongside you or are completely fucking worthless.
2. Multiverse/time travel fic that begins 8 months after the events of XMFC:
They’re moving quickly through the woods that surround the facility when Emma slows and makes a clicking sound with her tongue. Erik holds out his arms to halt the rest of the group.
3. Sequel to “What We Inherit,” still about David & Charles, but also with some (semi-hostile) cherik as well:
It’s a beautiful late-summer day, with a bright blue sky stretching above the sandy dunes that extend from the house out towards the Atlantic.
But David can’t see any of that right now, because he’s sitting in his bedroom, reading a book.
4. Media AU (trust me, this first line makes sense in context lol):
DAVID REMNICK: This is The New Yorker Radio Hour. I’m David Remnick.
5. Big Billions AU I started writing in early 2020 🥲 that I’ve finally picked up again this year:
Crowds, the common wisdom goes, are one of the truest tests of a telepath’s strength and skill. Never mind that there’s far more to telepathy than brute force and blunt shielding—with a packed train or a busy bar or a stadium full of revelers, it’s easier to see just how effectively a person can block out other minds.
This is a fun exercise, especially to look at patterns! Tagging @rozf, @gerec, @ikeracity, @midrashic, @joshriku, @arcanewinter, @jackyjango, + anyone else who wants to do this! (If anyone else wants to put their WIP opening lines out there, join me!!!!)

You make an excellent point, Ger.
Attractive people with ABSOLUTELY LAVA-HOT chemistry can cover a multitude of writing sins.

Charles takes the hint, opening his mouth and feeling the man tilting the jug just enough for water to get into his mouth, the feeling of the cold liquid against Charles' chapped lips and dry tongue almost relieving.
This is for something I just started writing and have no idea when I'll finish... There are far too many words in this, so I'll just tag some people fjsjfkfkkf

I was writing this for a prompt from @gerec for the rare pairs, but didn't manage to finish it. Sending it to the void to see if I can find motivation to continue.
Warnings: Underage (implied at this point)
Prompt:
Age Difference AU. You can also go with Howard Stark/Charles, Winston Frost/Charles, or any older non-Erik parental figure/Charles pairing :D Charles is rich, spoiled and used to getting what he wants (even without having to use his telepathy), and what he WANTS is to seduce his best friend's Dad! Maybe he does it to just prove that he can, or maybe it's at the request of his bestie to get back at their parent (i.e. because Tony or Emma or Raven/Cain asked him to do it). Feel free to take this in any direction - Dad legit 'falls' for Charles, or they mutually use each other, or Charles ends up being the one smitten and then unceremoniously discarded. Just make Charles the instigator and the other party a reluctant (at first) and then very willing target.
“Maybe... we could head over Tony’s, play around his workshop for a bit,” Charles suggested, trying to sound as casually as possible. Tony groaned. “No. No way, I’m not letting you anywhere near my dad!” Charles pouted, “what’s that supposed to mean! Your workshop is amazing, I just want to check it out!” “Uh huh,” was Tony unimpressed answer, “you’ve never shown any interest on anything mechanical before, and I know what you did with Emma’s dad.” “Hey, that was a mutually beneficial deal!” “That doesn’t change the looks you’ve been throwing Howard! So no, not going to my house when my dad’s home!” Charles huffed. The last thing he expected was to have resistance from Tony. He and Howard barely talked, and when they did, it was only to insult each other. He had thought it would be similar to what had happened with Winston Frost. Emma had been the one to actually suggest it, when she realized he was interested (which was, of course, as soon as Charles thought about it), going so far as to help him. She saw it as some kind of retribution for what he had done to her brother Christian.
Speaking of which... he turned to Emma, but by the way she was reading her book, purposely ignoring them, he supposed he would get no help from her.
Charles huffed again. Fine. If Tony wouldn’t let him go to Howard, then he would have to find a way to make Howard come to him.
A week later, Charles pretended to have a migraine when Tony invited him to try a new club. He ignored Emma’s knowing look, and went home. He had carefully organized everything. A casual comment at dinner last week about Howard Stark’s advances in mutant gene research, a little mental suggestion for Kurt to invite him to his personal lab, a miscommunication in the hour they’d meet, and Howard would be his for at least one hour. He paced his room impatiently until he finally felt two minds quickly approaching the mansion: Howard and his driver. He went downstairs, ready to intercept. It all went as planned. Claire, the housekeeper, opened the door, and as she was informing Howard about Kurt’s absence, Charles casually walked by. “Mr. Stark?” he asked, feigning surprise, “did you need anything?” “Charles!” Howard’s mind ringed with surprise and excitement, making Charles even more sure of himself. Charles thanked Claire, dismissing her. “I was supposed to meet Kurt…” Howard trailed off. “Oh, Kurt will come back shortly. If you have the time, you can wait for him. I’ll keep you company,” Charles smiled innocently, opening his eyes widely and slightly biting his naturally red lips. Howard’s gaze drifted to his mouth. Bingo! Still, Howard hesitated, “I wouldn’t want you to put up with an old man like me, I’ll find a way to entertain myself.” “Don’t be ridiculous,” replied Charles, coming closer, “you wouldn’t deny me a game of chess, would you? I have no one else to play with.” They were close, way closer than what would be appropriate, almost at kissing distance. Almost. Howard wasn’t a tall man, but he was still taller than Charles, making Charles having to look up at him through his lashes. Howard chuckled. “Sometimes I forget that your tastes are like an old man’s. You wouldn’t find Tony near a chess set even under death threat.” “Nothing wrong with having an old man’s taste,” Charles answered, licking his lips slowly and making sure his gaze wandered all over Howard’s body. He could feel the interest in Howard’s mind, but in that moment, hesitation was stronger. Maybe he overdid it a little. “Come on,” Charles added, abruptly turning around, “we’ll set the game in the library, that way, we won’t have interruptions.” He made sure to walk in a way that’d emphasize his butt, and without waiting for an answer, went into the library. Howard followed. As he said, all according to plan. One hour later, and Kurt’s arrival imminent, things had not gone according to plan. Charles had expected they’d have delicious sexy times. Maybe to have blown Howard and leave him wanting for more. Instead, they had actually played chess. And Charles had forgotten all about his sexy times plan because he was having fun. Playing chess. It’d been years since Charles played chess. Maybe since his father had died. But he had read a lot of strategy books, and his memory was eidetic. Still, Howard was no fool, and playing against him turned out to be a real challenge. On top of that, they were having a conversation about the mutant gene. And Howard was listening to his ideas, not just dismissing them like Kurt always did. The game was interrupted when Kurt entered the library. Charles had been shielding completely, as to not accidentally read any of Howard’s strategies, so he hadn’t felt Kurt arrive, which was not good.
