Okay, I don't know if anyone cares but I wanna talk about some german neopronouns I made a while ago.

som/mer/sim/son (from 'Sommer', german 'summer')

feu/feuer (alt. feus)/faum/fen (from 'Feuer', german 'fire')

ab/abyss/ab/yss (from 'abyss')

leo/leos/leo/leo (from 'Leo', latin 'lion')

lux/luxs (pronounced 'lukses')/lux/lux (I made these because it sounds like 'Luchs', german 'lynx', but apparently 'lux' is also the latin word for 'light')

I really enjoyed creating them but offline I only use he/him pronouns so I'm putting them out here. Maybe somebody else likes them aswell.

YOYOYOYO HOL UP WAIT ZER0 WAS ORIGINALLY NB AND THEY REDCONNED IT??? I didn‘t even know… I only ever played bl2 in german and as you might guess bc of their voice big Z was adressed by er(he/him) in ger but now I‘ll mostlikely reinstall it in english just to hear the voicelines. Also makes me angy bc i played bl3 in both eng and ger and also the tales in eng and Zer0 only ever gets adressed as he/him in those.

Now I gotta go back an edit my posts about my lanky ninja cryptid. I may be cis but that does not mean that I will stand by an just let the erasure of my nb siblings blow past me. Nah-ah. Not on my turf. Not on my blog.

EDIT: a bunch of lovelies have gone out of their way to inform me about the while „zer0 is nb“ thing stemming from posts by one of the devs/writers and thus it was never actually canon in game and provide me with info and links I have failed to dig up or simply dug not deep enough.

I‘m still gonna stick with they/them for them now tho bc honestly it fits. Friggin faceless unknown species space ninja that speaks in haiku and you really want to tell me that someone like that would give a fuck about conforming to human genders? nah.

TIL that the german translation of radio silence actually uses neopronouns for radio (at least as far as i could tell) which made me really fucking happy because german translations aren't exactly known for handling queer stuff very well. also i decided this kind of makes up for them changing the original title (seemingly without any sense) to another english title.

How do gender neutral pronouns work in Germany?

Not well. We don't have an equivalent to singular they, sadly. Some people use the neutral "es", but like "it" in English it's very much something that's usually not used for people, so you should only use it people who are explicitly fine with it.

There's a whole bunch of neopronouns, but none them are even remotely established. The only one that's marginally more well known is "dey" (the German Star Trek: Discovery dub used "dey" for Adira!), but personally I don't like it because it sounds like my dialect's pronunciation of "die" (female article).

Part of the reason for hard it is for neoprounouns to get established is how pronouns get declined in German (they change much more depending on case than they do in English). So where a complete pronoun set in English would be "he/him/his" the equivalent of that in German would be "er/ihm/ihn/sein/seine/seines/seinen". So if you want to have grammatically "correct" neopronouns you need to account for that. For my pronouns it looks like this: "cey/cem/cer/cere/ceres/ceren". Which is admittedly not easy to remember, so I rarely ask people to use them, and expect people to use them wrong if they try to use them (but I still very much appreciate them trying!).

The other option for neopronouns is to just use them like you would use a name, so the only declination happening is to add a "s" to it for possessive pronouns/in genitive. I think that's actually the more common way people deal with declination, but personally I find it awkward. I sometimes see lists of "German neopronouns", but they never state how they are supposed to be declined, it's always just the basic nominative form, which IMO makes these lists pretty useless and even misleading. ("People say German is soo gendered, but look at all these German neopronouns!" "How do you use them?" "..." (silence))

There's also the problem that the German equivalent of "this/that" is also gendered, so if you really want to consequently use gender neutral pronouns, you also need to replace "diese/dieser/dieses" (and all the other declined forms). Same goes for articles ("the"- "der/die/das/den/dem/dessen"), and probably other things I'm currently forgetting.

So in short, German pronouns are a mess, and trying to untangle gender from them, or wrangle a new gender in there, is really, really hard. (Also, I feel bad for anyone trying to learn German as a second language.)

Gender neutral pronouns in a language that doesn't have them (German edition)

So, the post about how anglicised queer discussions are possessed me to look up the most "common" gender neutral neopronoun that has been invented in German: Xier

Common is in quotation marks because outside of queer circles, you'll be hard pressed finding anyone who even knows about it.

German is a gendered language; being gender neutral is next to impossible. Either you move to the generic masculine version, or a more new-ish female version. Either way you're either assigning yourself a male or female grammatical gender which when talking about people is also a gender signifier.

So you, a queer person, would like to NOT be referred to as either male or female. So your options are:

a) suck it up

b) put xier in bio

Ok, queer person. You selected option b). Now you're faced with the newest issue: People don't know how to use your pronoun. "Ah, just put 'xier/xies'! Just like the English speakers." A quiet part of your mind screams.

You put "xier/xies" down. Personal and Possessive Pronouns. Easy.

Ah, wait we're still missing the relative pronoun. Something which is also gendered in German.

You add "dier". Easy. Relative pronoun acquired.

Xier/Dier/Xies

"Why are there three?" A confused anglophone might ask.

"Where is the rest?" Another German asks. Where is the rest of the grammar. You can't use only the first case in a sentence....

We're still missing the other 3 grammatical cases.

Xier/Dier/Xies Xieser/Dies/Xiese Xiem/Diem/Xiesem Xien/Dien/Xieses There we go. All cases and all pronoun types. But possessive pronouns are dependent on the gender of the thing being possessed. Great. 3 more grammar forms per case for possessive pronouns. And we need another one. What if we're talking about another gender neutral person? Neuter (usually) isn't used to refer to people...

In the end, if you want to include everything, you end up with this

Just tell them your pronouns.

God Borderlands is such a deliciously queer franchise. Nearly everyone is gay or bi. There’s a whole DLC dedicated to Hammerlock's wedding to his husband. There’s a mission in the Pre-Sequel where the mission giver is switching up he/she pronouns continuously.

The lesbians are never the butt of jokes on account of their sexuality, but rather because of their personality. And there’s a load of them!

Since BL3, the common enemies have both male and female body types, which is such an uncommon thing in games!

In Wonderlands, you can even set your own pronouns, switch them whenever you want - and now comes the best part - SO CAN THE ENEMIES! In German at least, they’re gendered! That is so fucking amazing! YOU CAN EVEN USE NEOPRONOUNS!!!!!!

It would be so nice if the next installment could keep this spirit and perhaps expand on it! Oh, and it’d be also nice if the writing got good again, BL3 was unbearable on that front

But my GOD the franchise is so queer friendly. It gives me such immense hope.

I've been watching the newest episode of Gen V (Episode 5) and at around the middle where Marie and Emma are talking about Jordan I started wondering what pronouns they use for them in the German version (my native language, but I prefer to watch movies and such in their original language) cause German is a horribly gendered language so I go back and rewatch the part in German and!! they're using the neopronouns dey/dem/deren which a lot of non-binary people in Germany started using as a German version of the gender neutral English pronouns they/them and!!!! my little non-binary heart can't take this, maybe we'll actually have accepted gender neutral pronouns in German one day!!!! this is such an important first step and it makes me so happy, omg I love this show :')
