Why do americans call it tuna fish?
SO I WENT DOWN A RABBIT HOLE (unsurprising if you know me) about why americans (and ONLY americans) call canned tuna "tuna fish". If you look at Wikipedia's page for tuna, it'll tell you that it's because the german for tuna sounds like tuna fish. That doesn't make sense, given people in wildly different regions (for example, Connecticut and Louisiana) were calling it tuna fish in the 70s, and why ONLY americans call it tuna fish. It had to be something other than that.
So began my search. In my research, I found that tuna only started being sold to americans in cans in 1908, further strengthening my thought that it couldn't just be because german. After about an hour of fruitless searching, I realized if it's only americans, it had to be something that wouldn't have escaped much past the bounds of america. Advertising in american magazines. I somehow managed to land on an etsy listing for an ad for White Star tuna FISH from the 1930s, and off I went.
The earliest written evidence I could find (not a professional researcher or historian at all) of the use of the phrase "tuna fish" was in a 1919 court case regarding labels between the Southern California Fish Co. and White Star Canning Co., which describes the White Star label as saying "tuna fish" on it. I then found other (White Star) ads (and a can label) from the 20s, 30s, and 50s (I can't find the one from the 50s but I swear I saw one), and then an ad for Bumblebee tuna from the 70s that says "tunafish" on it. So there we go. Advertising in american magazines. I don't know why White Star decided to include the fish, but it seems like they're the reason we do.
(It's a little hard to find much useful information on the White Star Canning Co, both because White Star is the name of the ship company that had the Titanic (so you gotta include the canning part and that might be limiting out some relevant stuff) and also because the White Star Canning Co was merged in 1922 with the company that became Chicken of the Sea)

Hii! I saw you reblogged a post talking abt learning irish etc and how more people should include irish wprds and stuff in their daily lives etcc. I was just wondering if you knew of any ways of getting into actually learning irish. Ive tried duolingo but they kind of stopped offering support for smaller languages etc and most other language learning apps either suck or dont include irish at all.. any suggestions?
Thank you for the ask anon, I'd be happy to help! Here are some things that helped me:
Use Irish language stickers you can put on objects around your house. I used to have some German ones when I was in school and it really helped to see some common vocab in places I'd be every day. (All links will be included below!)
Take online classes (or in-person classes if possible). You can also find some videos on YouTube that are sometimes just as good.
Keep a notebook. Use it to write down anything you learn so you can revise it later. I find it helps to look over it just before you go to bed so it's easier to remember in the morning.
Talk to native speakers if at all possible. Irish isn't really spoken a lot outside of Ireland (and barely spoken outside the Gaeltacht areas these days) so you may benefit from finding them on the internet. It can be a good opportunity to meet new friends as well as brush up on your Irish.
Watch TV shows and movies in Irish. They are easiest to find on TG4, which has a lot of well known TV shows dubbed in Irish. There are also some you can find on YouTube which are on the Junior/Leaving Cert such as Yu Ming is Ainm Dom and Cáca Milis.
Try out some printable Irish language worksheets you can find on websites such as Twinkl. You can also get past exam papers on Studyclix and Examinations.ie, though these may be a bit advanced for a beginner.
I hope you found these tips useful! Ádh mór!

A Lightweight Packaging Guardian
The fusion of poly coated kraft paper with extrusion coating emerges as a ground breaking and inventive solution. This dynamic combination delivers a multitude of advantages, addressing the varied requirements of industries in search of robust, environmentally friendly, and aesthetically pleasing packaging.
Kraft paper is a sturdy, machine-made product primarily composed of wood pulp and is a testament to the ingenuity of poly coated kraft paper manufacturers. Occasionally confused as "craft paper," it derives its name from the German word "kraft," signifying strength. This refers to a specific pulping process that imparts robustness to the paper. It begins with the careful selection of high-quality paper, known for its strength and durability which exhibits high tear resistance, and prominently oriented fibres. Its lightweight nature proves cost-effective for shipping and its coarse texture, durability, and flexibility provide superior protection compared to many other packing materials. Poly coated kraft paper manufacturers can also make products that are watermarked and striped and can be printed on as well.
The introduction of extrusion coating further amplifies the capabilities of this formidable packaging material. This process involves the application of a molten layer of polyethene onto a substrate, creating a seamless and uniform coating. It is expertly applied to the paper which involves the use of advanced machinery that ensures an even and robust application of the polyethylene, enhancing the paper's resistance to moisture, grease, and oil. As industry leaders, poly coated kraft paper manufacturers, play a pivotal role in crafting packaging solutions that combine the strength and versatility of kraft paper with the protective properties of polyethene coating. Moisture resistance, strength, durability and versatility are some of the many benefits offered by this paper. Some other added advantages of extrusion coating are enhanced barrier properties which act as a shield against moisture and external contaminants, improved printability and heat sealability. It also aligns with eco-friendly practices with numerous manufacturers embracing biodegradable and recyclable coatings, playing a role in minimizing the impact on the environment.
Poly coated kraft paper, with its extrusion-coated enhancement, is a testament to the industry's commitment to progress and meeting the ever-changing needs of a robust market. It not only meets the stringent requirements of industry but also addresses environmental concerns, contributing to our collective effort to minimise our impact on the planet.

Are You Able To Match The Military Branch To Its Jargon?
Tumblr media
In France, they ran alongside the primary rail strains, whereas in Australia they have been used as change engines. Easily transported by amphibious landing craft and by air, the jeep went in every single place. It was reported that a jeep was the first motorized vehicle to conquer the steep climbs and dense jungles of a new India-China route supplanting the Burma Road. To keep these jeeps from falling into enemy fingers, authorities turned them over to British troops and to anyone else who would drive them north. Stories of the jeep's wartime feats have long since become part of American folklore. There was, as an illustration, an incident that came about in 1944 in the course of the Battle of the Bulge. A Belgian sentry at a checkpoint stopped a jeep carrying three males carrying U. S. Army uniforms. Speaking German, he immediately demanded their surrender. One of the extra hair-elevating jeep stories was reported by Homer Bogart, of the brand new York Herald Tribune. It occurred throughout General Douglas MacArthur's march on Manila.
Tumblr media
Despite the unique designation as G.P., the jeep was called many different issues as nicely. The extra printable being Bantam, Blitz Buggy, Bub, Gnat, Quad, Pygmy, G.P., Midget, and Peep. Some believe that somewhere alongside the way in which, the identify Peep gave solution to jeep when troopers and check drivers began calling it the jeep amongst themselves. Yet one more possible origin of the identify is from a really peculiar place. This creature was a native of the darkest part of Africa and was supposedly a fourth-dimensional animal who lived on a diet of orchids. He had the ability to go back and forth between dimensions at will. Naturally, while within the fourth dimension he was invisible to all-three-dimensional individuals. With the data of this caricature creature, it is not inconceivable that take a look at driver Red Hausmann had the personality traits of 'Eugene' in mind when he first used the identify "jeep." Couldn't the midget automobile, just like the little animal, get round quite a bit and make itself virtually invisible?
However the jeep sped in, hitched to a plow, and the ditch was dug at ten miles an hour. Behind it got here another jeep, towing a reel of cable, and subsequent a third jeep pulling a roller that covered the cable and flattened the ground. The job was finished in two hours while Australians gaped. Read on to learn more. From Where the Name JEEP? The typical wisdom has it that the acquainted jeep received its identify from its Army designation: G.P. General Purpose. Yet, there are different tales as to how the jeep obtained its name. Some say the title jeep evolved from different variations on the phrase itself. The phrase jeep, though, was used as early as 1914 by Army mechanics charged with testing new automobiles. Then in 1937, tractors equipped to the Army by Minneapolis Moline have been known as jeeps. The forerunner of the famous B-17 was additionally nicknamed the jeep.
The BBC is just not answerable for the content material of external sites. Apple led the way in which in 2016 in the wake of a sequence of shootings within the US. It was criticised at the time for deviating from the emoji commonplace, which ensures the symbols carry the identical which means across rival manufacturers' gadgets and apps. Days later, Microsoft introduced it was doing the reverse. Until then, Windows 10 had featured a cartoon-like space gun, however the operating system's Anniversary Update switched the picture to that of a more realistic-wanting revolver. While the emoji standard describes what every symbol should seem like, companies are free to use their very own designs. Critics have warned that deviating from the norm might result in messages being misunderstood. But whereas Microsoft's newest transfer may be seen because it coming again into the fold, the response on social media has been combined. This Twitter put up can't be displayed in your browser. The BBC isn't accountable for the content of exterior sites.
"All of us children played with toy guns and didn’t grow to be criminals," says Schleyer, who lives in Burke, "and now it’s swiftly taboo even to level your finger like a Orbi Gun. As a kid on Long Island, he and his buddies took their trusty sidearms out on safari or onto the battlefield or into the alleys seeking a infamous gangster, all without straying off their block. "You by no means got killed, you got winged," he recalls. They’d take their guns to the movies and shoot on the screen together with Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. As Schleyer got older, his fantasy play morphed into admiration for the workmanship within the guns, the inlaid ivory, the high quality metalwork, the crisp sounds they produced. "Sometimes they have been more difficult than the true factor," he says. In more moderen years, he’s been invited to show some of his prized possessions at native libraries, only to have dad and mom complain "that I used to be encouraging kids to shoot and kill," he says.

Ukraine Got New 3D Printed Drones: Electric Propulsion, 400km Range, Many Other Interesting Features - Technology Org

Ukraine Got New 3D Printed Drones: Electric Propulsion, 400km Range, Many Other Interesting Features - Technology Org
The ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war is characterized by the extensive use of drones on both sides of the conflict. It is the first large armed conflict of modern times when drones are used so much. They are used for reconnaissance, surveillance, as well as combat missions. But the technology of unmanned aerial vehicles is being advanced even further.
Ukraine has just received several new very special Titan Falcon drones. These electric drones have several interesting characteristics, one of which is their 3D-printable design.
Titan Falcon is a universal 3D printable drone, which can carry out reconnaissance missions for the defenders of Ukraine. Image credit: Titan Dynamics
The Titan Falcon is a creation of the US technology company Titan Dynamics. This is a long-range battery-electric drone made almost entirely by 3D printers. The Titan Falcon is not purely a military drone – hundreds of such drones have been printed all over the world and perform the most diverse tasks.
Of course, the Titan Falcon is mostly used for surveillance as it can carry different cameras. For example, the Titan Falcon can be used to monitor forests to make sure no wildfires are getting started. Or it can monitor the Russian positions in Ukraine so that the Ukrainian artillerymen can get the exact coordinates and engage these targets.
Ukraine has reportedly just received three Titan Falcon drones. These 3D-printed drones will carry out reconnaissance missions. Titan Falcon reached Ukraine thanks to an American-Ukrainian NGO and the German company Donaustahl.

— MAKS 23 👀🇺🇦 (@Maks_NAFO_FELLA) November 20, 2023
The Titan Falcon can carry a variety of different cameras and other equipment – its fuselage can fit a camera with a 2.5-inch lens. It can observe a large area of land and has very good endurance for an electric drone.
The advantages of the Titan Falcon are a long operating range, a relatively low price, and a light 3D-printed construction. With fully charged batteries, the Titan Falcon can travel about 400 km. It has endurance for up to 6 hours. In addition, despite its large wingspan of 2 meters, the Titan Falcon is easy to transport as its wings, horizontal stabilizers, and the vertical stabilizer are removable. This means that it can be packed around and launched smoothly in covert operations.
Of course, the key feature of the Titan Falcon is its 3D-printed construction. It means that it is relatively cheap to make and can be customized. The manufacturer says that there is a choice of 3 different wingtips (up, straight, or down) and the tail can be conventional or V-tail – these choices could be determined by packaging of cameras and other equipment.
Ukraine needs as many drones as it can get. Russia still has a huge advantage in electronic warfare systems, which means that various jammers and other devices are pulling Ukrainian drones out of the sky. UAVs make a huge difference in this war and hopefully, Titan Falcons can bring a lot of valuable information for the Ukrainian defense effort.
