Sir Percy Blakeney, Baronet, marrying an actress? It's more likely than you think.
This is Gertie Millar:
She was a working class woman from Bradford, West Yorkshire, who became a popular 'Gaiety Girl' in the Edwardian music halls and variety theatres. She married her manager, Lionel Monckton, but when he died, she went onto marry the Earl of Dudley - and became Gertie, Countess of Dudley! And she was just one actress who snagged herself a wealthy 'Stage Door Johnny' in that era.
Sir Percy Blakeney in The Scarlet Pimpernel isn't even a member of the aristocracy, merely a lowly baronet, and he makes his return to English society with his new French actress bride, Marguerite. They become friends with the Prince of Wales - who also had an infatuation with an actress, Mary Robinson - and are instantly leaders of the ton. Sir Percy makes the rules, he doesn't follow them!
