rewatching Avengers 1 and godDAMN, mcu did Maria Hill so dirty. I know that's stating the incredibly obvious but still. They had this character that was a tent-pole of the overall world build setting and it's like the writing just had...no idea what to do with her or what her personal deal ever was.

And it bugs me bc I feel like fic writers got it better, even though she's depicted lots of different ways. She's not an Avenger or a superhero or an enhanced person, she's not someone with a crazy backstory or motivation. BUT THAT DOESNT MAKE HER BORING! The exact opposite is true-- she's highly competent and connected and unshakeable in insane circumstances and that's her deal and it's FASCINATING.

She gets along with Clint because she's always like shrug that happened ok whats next (thinking of WS in the truck 'that thing was squeezin my brain') She gets along with Cap because she's a regular ass human who never let that stop her from doing unlikely amazing shit to help her people a la small Steve. She gets along with Nat because she (seems to) live 100% in and about SHIELD and missions but again what's extra fascinating in my headcanon of her is Natasha was made that way but from what I know of Hill she just is that way.

Just... Marvel is full of these hyperbolic superlative characters all over the place one-upping each other, and a character that does none of that and is still essential. Going back to how I started I guess my point is we never find out what her personal deal is and THAT'S her character and it's SO NOT or at least it NEVER NEEDED TO BE dismissive and bland. Her motivation? "What do you mean? I showed up today and this is what's going on."

I'm not sure what my point is. Except she was in no freakin conceivable way a disposable character to anyone who had any investment in the storytelling of this whole world at all.
