This vast province allows you to escape into the amber dunescape of the remote #Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park & experience unique establishments such as #XausLodge. . . Here, we disconnected from Planet Normal as part of a wild #camping trip with the exceptional @tfpd_sa crew, reconnecting with nature upon the surreal and tranquil edge of a giant (and very dry) heart-shaped pan. . . Long hikes with the #Khomani #San guides; back-of-beyond game drives; sundowners on sweeping dunes; up close and insightful time with the earthy #Bushman people: outstanding gourmet cuisine, and views extending into trance time across the #Kalahari landscape ... Currently chilling - on and off the @giantlivrsa bikes - as the @isuzusa #BeyondAukoerebis Expedition rolls through spectacular #Namibia. Our stay in #Luderitz was short, but we did make time to explore the gorgeous German architecture and taste some traditional local delicacies, as in #apfelstrudel, ja! Our @frontrunnerza tents and hammocks are the bomb, and the #campsite at @gondwanalodges puts @nwrinsta at #SharkIsland to shame. I bought a tiny @djisouthafrica #djimini early in 2020. Around the size of a fattish Cape sparrow, this is about as backpackable and non-invasive as a drone can get. The images below are the last visual harvest from this tiny little fly-machine with makulu-skop, after a raptor at #CedarFalls decided it resembled a rather stupid bird. Said falcon made short shrift of the drone as it hovered in the airspace above one of the rugged #baviaanskloof gorges, striking it disdainfully and shattering it in a dozen pieces. RIP, my magical aerial friend :-( Moving on. The photos recovered from the drone's SD Card do one thing: they capture a gargantuan vastidiousness (yes, I know this is not a word) within this World Heritage Site wilderness space. The #trailrunners participating in last weekend's @leopardtrailrun literally become a real-time #WheresWally puzzle as they recede to miniscule specks within the unrelenting natural grandeur. Serrated peaks, convoluted gorges, mountain meadows, shimmering rooigras ridgelines, shard-shattered scree slopes, kloofs awash with restios sedges ... there's so much more to this space than just the 3-day stage run. "There is no other place I know that is so heavy with atmosphere, so strangely and darkly impregnated with that stuff of life that bears the authentic stamp of South-Africa" . — Herman Charles Bosman . . . And Breathe... The dust-devil scrub land of the #NorthWest flickered into view after a near-1000km drive via the #FreeState flat lands, fuelled by mediocre Wimpy coffee and the decidedly retro lang-arm tunes of #OFM (as an Oom, this is sort of my vibes these days, so I'm not complaining). . . I'm a huge fan of Herman Charles Bosman, which means #GrootMarico has been on my radar since I first read 'Mafeking Road' and 'Cask of Jerepigo' many a moon ago. This quirky little dorp is enveloped by the Marico Biosphere Reserve, including the Molopo and Marico river systems, and characterized by dolomite outcrops and an expansive deciduous montane bush veldt ecosystem. . . One of our key adventures here was a sublime #freedive into the #MaricoEye sink hole, a crystal clear spring approximately 18 deep and secreted away on a farm where a 68kg boerboel by the name of Bwana is in charge of access control. Once you manage to slip past this Shcwarzenneger canine, what awaits is one of the most astounding aqua experiences you can have anywhere in southern Africa. . . The spring is approximately 80m across and covered in giant green lilypads. And when you dip your head below the water surface, a wonder-world of blue and green hues will seduce you into the glorious, cool embrace. Schools of tilapia flock languidly within the glittering refraction of the midday sun's rays as you fin into a surreal mindspace amidst the gentle sway of entwined lily stalks. . . Dawn worship at my 'Church of the Great Outdoors' this morning ...We kept the numbers down to ensure self-isolation, but this is something that comes naturally when you #surf, anyway. Instead of pews, we had boards navigating the swell, and we gave praise as aqua lines charged towards the shore, their crashing chorus echoing from high granite cliffs soaring like the buttresses of a godly cathedral. . . The ocean is the source of life and the original place of baptism. Even now, when you paddle out into the surging tide, you do it to search for inspiration, drown out the cacophony of man-made noise, to re-establish the epicentre of your equilibrium and to find your inner flow. . . The ocean is enchanting. The ocean is vast and endless. It is both daunting and gentle, vibrant and alive, and if you are a disciple, it will constantly beckon you with its siren song. How can our @governmentza not understand how important #naturalmovement, fresh air & reconnecting with #PlanetEarth is to recharging our #immunesystem? . . Today felt like the real #freedomday as we watched the sun rise over the wide sweep of #FalseBay, with the Peninsula coming to life all round. As a family, we have a pretty intimate relationship with #MotherNature, and I cannot begin to tell you how much we are missing the mountains and ocean and even just the park across the road. Yes, we've done the backyard camping, the driveway game drives, the garden obstacle courses, but the hankering hunkers down like a black hole that can't be plumbed deep down in the pit of my stomach. Often in life, there is so much beauty in the #broken ... . . The Japanese have an ancient art form known as #kintsugi, where they repair broken pottery using a lacquer made up of gold, silver and other precious metals. These master craftsmen work in immaculate detail, striving not to recreate the original, but rather to establish a new aesthetic. Their philosophy aims to make the object even more beautiful than it was before it was broken ... . . In a way, each and every one of us is a little bit broken, too. We would like to believe we are perfect, but in reality, us humans are a unique mish-mash of the good, the bad and the ugly. But as we live and age and gather wisdom, we get the opportunity to apply our own brand of kintsugi ... We can fine tune our character, improve on our lifestyle, shape our relationships, and whittle away at our flaws. It's an on-going process to get those pieces to fit in the right places, but often the doing is in the trying. . . There are many parallels to be found in the many broken places on planet, too. I got to spend some time in #Bushmanskloof near #mcgregor yesterday as part of one of our @ozone.africa projects, and it was heartbreaking to see how this #naturereserve had been devastated by the New Year fires. And yet, from amongst the charred and blackened earth, #nature was already applying its restorative kintsugi, with purple disas, crimson pelargoniums and jade restios blades beginning to weave a brand new tapestry. . . We got to run free within the shattered rock and scattered detritus of these rugged wilderness ranges, and despite the damage, the natural beauty was truly celestial. This will always be my cathedral, this 'Church of the Great Outdoors', and I wish we had more time to spend watching this special place go about mending itself. These last two days have been all about #redfins here in the gorgeous @gvbconservancy. Our mission has focused on monitoring #riverhealth in the off-grid canyons characterising this part of the #Hessequa, and what an adventure to hang out with the @capenature field crew 💦🏞️💙 . . Rock-hopping, ridge scrambles, eel wrangling, deep-forest hikes ... all while trawling the tannin-stained pools of the #Tradouw, #Kruis and other incredible mountain streams in the peaks above #Heidelberg, way off the beaten track, and as far as you could possibly get from the #ratrace. . .
