"How dare you."

"What?"

Ghostbur turns to Dream, startled. The man is standing at the edge of the clearing. Their clearing, where every moment had been for them, and them alone. He's wearing a broken and battered mask, the bottom half almost gone, in a jagged, diagonal line. Ghostbur almost doesn't recognize him. He can feel the glare, the intense anger, even with his face covered.

"How dare you," the man repeats, and his voice wobbles. Ghostbur doesn't understand. What is he doing here?

"Dream?"

"How dare you show up here? How dare you stand at this grave and leave him blue? How dare you bring yourself here and stand where he used to? How dare you? How dare you?!"

Dream is boiling with anger, and Ghostbur can see the tears streaming down his face. He doesn't know what to say or how to respond. He blinks, and Dream is in his face, grabbing him by the collar.

"I want you out of here. I want you gone, anywhere but here. Leave this place alone, or I swear, if ghosts can die-"

"Dream?" His voice is a question as his hand comes up to grab the man's wrist. He politely pretends to ignore the visible flinch that follows their contact. "Are you alright?"

The simple inquiry seems to break him. He lets go, stumbling back, away from him, falling to the ground in a mess of loud sobs that shake Ghostbur to his core. Dream is always kind to him. He must be hurting awfully bad for him to snap like this.

It makes sense, Ghostbur thinks. Dream's blue has always turned dark so fast. Something like this must have been a long time coming. He can help, though. Slowly, he approaches, gathering his friend into his arms, and lets him cry. He holds him through yelling and weak shoves until they settle down in the soft grass.

"How could you?" Dream whispers, and Ghostbur gets the distinct feeling he's not quite talking to him. "How could you make me care about something so much and just. Take it away? How could you make me love you? It's not fair."

The ghost's chest aches as the man in his arms continues to cry quietly. He's not who he wants. He's not who any of them want. But he's what they have. So he'll do his best.

They sit there for a long time.

honestly vilbur and ghostbur had/have alot of potential in regards of having a interesting dynamic with c!dream. i feel like neither relationships (cant exist at the same time and at the moment vilbur is the “alivebur”) would be necessarily healthy but i feel if c!dream were to ever get a redemption arc or to at least get a therapist (*cough cough* his old guardian puffy) he could have a healthy dynamic with at least ghostbur. i feel like unless vilbur gets a redemption arc the only dynamic he can have with c!dream will be toxic. this isnt to say it doesnt have potential though, the concept of once enemies becoming a powerful villainous duo because one of them revived the other and the other is utterly grateful and helps the former out and they develop a relationship of a god and his evil partner in search of power. they’ll be extremely useful for eachother and an incredibly detrimental duo to c!tommys success and mental health. on the other hand we have ghostwastaken, where ghostbur thinks dream is amazing and nice and sees the best in him and dream only manipulates and uses him. i feel if ghostbur got more mature though OR if dream learnt to genuinely care for others they couldve (still could?) had a good relationship where they learn to become better people. then again, theres “friend” and im pretty sure ghostbur was dating him.
